Verizon’s latest phone, the Samsung Stratosphere, has been rooted by some industrious modders. While the root method isn’t the easiest in the world, but it should be easy enough for most advanced Android users. For the record, the Stratosphere was only on the market for a little under two weeks before a root method was discovered.</div> <div style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px;"> The Stratosphere is essentially the same hardware as the Samsung Epic 4G, with a little elbow grease to move it over to Verizon’s LTE network and update the software to sweet, sweet Gingerbread. As far as hardware goes it’s strictly middle of the road, but for the moment it’s the first and only QWERTY slider phone to take advantage of Verizon’s LTE network. Interestingly, it seems to be the first Verizon LTE phone to use a Mini-SIM card, saving some small but valuable space in the phone’s interior.</div> <div style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px;"> The phone is basically on-par with the original Galaxy S, plus some extra bulk to accommodate a full keyboard. The problem comes from a customization that HTC has implemented on the core Android system, allowing any app that asks for the right permission access to a staggering amount of users’ private and technical data. Even more disturbing, it seems to be the case that some of this information can be retrieved remotely by HTC or anyone else due to an HTC app opening up a network port on any affected phone.</div> <div style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px;"> The primary issue stems from the “android.permission.INTERNET” permission. Once an app calls this permission into effect, it has access to all sorts of disturbing information on both rooted and non-rooted phones. The private information which any app can access includes email addresses, GPS locations and at least some former locations, call logs, SMS logs, and information from running apps. The HTC app “HtcLoggers.apk” is capable of collecting much of this data and then supplying it to anyone who opens up a network port on the phone. Theoretically, it’s possible to duplicate a user’s entire phone using these vulnerabilities.</div> <div style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px;"> Trevor Eckhart originally discovered these vulnerabilities, and the flaws have been verified and cataloged by Artem Russakovskii and Justin Case of Android Police. According to these three, the problems effect a wide range of HTC Android devices across all major carriers. This looks like it may become the new standard for phones powered by LTE. If you want the speeds, you’ll have to pay the premium up front. HTC just released the kernel source codes for not only the highly popular EVO 4G (after waiting forever) but also the new EVO 3D, Sensation 4G and even the Facebook HTC Status.
