The question on hardware junkies’ minds is, is the experience on such a low-grade device acceptable at all? Its Android Froyo operating system and 366 MHz processor are outstripped by the cheapest subsidized smartphones, and a resistive 800 x 400 touchscreen doesn’t hold a candle to more modern devices. But for all that, the tablet includes a couple of surprises along its thick side – full-sized USB ports for a mouse and keyboard. The tablet is designed to teach children to use the web, and in that respect, it could demonstrate the basics of both touchscreen and traditional computer inputs. If we’re being realistic, it’s ugly. As a mechanism for bringing modern technology into the most remote regions of India, it looks like the Aakash is a solid performer. I came across one today that offers a relatively novel feature: it automatically hooks in to Google Translate to allow you to input text in any supported language. TypeSmart Keyboard is still in beta, and free for the moment. Then hold the Microphone key, tap “Translator,” and select your to and from languages. TypeSmart then sends your text to Google Translate and retrieves the translation, foreign characters, punctuation and all. Even for those of us who are native speakers or bilingual, this could represent a significant time savings versus using the official Google Translator app, or even hunting down the special characters that populate your language of choice.</div> <div style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px;"> TypeSmart supports most of the advanced features that soft keyboard junkies are used to: multiple layouts, haptic feedback, text prediction, spelling correction, et cetera. I’ve played plenty of mobile games on both iOS and Android but the level of detail, textures, and overall rendered environment in Shadowgun make it the best I’ve seen yet. Google’s services are heavily regulated and censored in the authoritarian nation, though not for lack of trying. Hacks into Chinese dissidents’ Gmail accounts by persons unknown (wink) are common, and according to web service Great Firewall of China, the webmail service is still blocked in all of mainland China.</div> <div style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px;"> Assuming that the outage was initiated by the Chinese government, there are some very pointed reasons why they’d restrict access to the Android Market. First of all it’s yet another vector for non-sanctioned information to get into the hands of the Chinese public. Nearly all web traffic in China is monitored and censored, and while the Chinese version of the Android Market must conform to these rules as well, there’s nothing stopping the government from simply shutting it down on a whim. Tuesday, SanDisk 64GB micro SDXC cards were reported working on multiple Android devices. Amazon did not skimp in the least when manufacturing the Kindle Fire. Though it was announced for $199, the actual tablet costs Amazon $209 to manufacture! The company is surely banking on users to purchase books and subscriptions from Amazon’s App/Kindle Store to come out of this with some profit. I didn’t think it would be all that fun but I gave it a download on my Android 3.1 Honeycomb tablet just to see the new HD graphics and the game does look pretty good. Available initially in the UK and Germany, Vodafone expects it to have a positive effect on app sales, where users may have previously avoided paid-software over the hassles of adding a credit card to their account.</div> <div style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px;"> Initially, Vodafone says, carrier billing will only be available to those who purchased their Android device through the company’s retail or online stores. It should feature a 1 Ghz processor, a 4.0″ qHD display, Android 2.3 Gingerbread and snapping photos with a 8MP shooter. Like many phones in Japan it will also feature a TV tuner on board.</div> <div style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px;"> Looking at the image above I can see Google’s Android Market so it will probably be blessed with their specific apps like Gmail, Maps, Voice search, and the all important Market but everything else will most likely be all about Yahoo and you can bet the browser homepage wont be Google that is for sure. It also appears users who buy the phone will get access to Yahoo Premium for 2 years free with purchase.</div> <div style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px;"> Most likely this phone will never see the light of day outside of Japan but either way it’s pretty interesting, and I also felt like saying “winning”.</div> </div> </div>
