Despite a lot of backlash over a big redesign for the Snapchat app — which to be sure is a very big deal for a product-centric company like Snap — Snap CEO Evan Spiegel vigorously defended the redesign and basically said people need to get used to it.

Spiegel said at the Goldman Sachs Internet & Technology Conference that even people complaining about the app was a sort of validation that the changes the company wants to happen are, indeed, happening. Snap aimed to try to separate the idea of communication and broadcasting with Snap into similar buckets, rather than the features being kind of mixed up (like Stories being on a right swipe).

“The tech is an important piece but I think the harder part you can’t get around is the time it takes to learn,” Spiegel said. “You do need folks to use the product, to communicate with their friends to learn how to better provide that feed. The tech to some degree is a solved problem, the time to… to learn is a hard problem to solve. Even the complaints we’re seeing reinforce the philosophy. Even the frustrations we’re seeing really validate those changes. It’ll take time for people to adjust, but for me using it for a couple months I feel way more attached to the service.”

Of course, Spiegel can say these things on stage and then end up changing his mind. But as Snap faces increasing competition from companies looking to clone some of its products — Instagram stories, basically — Snap has had to look at some pretty significant changes to see if it can keep its users engaged and continue to grow. That being said, the Snapchat app could continue to go through tweaks and shifts, so it’s hard to tell where things will end up over the course of the next few months.

As with any significant changes, Snap faced a ton of backlash, but maybe found it had to stay the course. Of course, Spiegel said on stage that it’s basically flattering that people want to copy the app. (Founders often call this “validation of the business,” because why not.)

Snap reported its fourth-quarter earnings earlier this month, which beat some expectations and sent the shares soaring at essentially rocket ship status. Snap has come quite close to recovering from the significant crash it had through its first year as a public company, something Spiegel said — like many fresh CEOs often say — has made them a better company. As a public company, Snap is much more beholden to public investors and has a newfound fiduciary duty to get its business in order.

Spiegel also said the company is less focused on specific geographies as it looks to continue to grow, and more focused on making sure its users actually understand the app when the join and are able to start communicating with your friends. “We’re really focused on, how when you come into our service, do you understand stories, do you understand maps,” Spiegel said.

Spiegel has repeated the refrain that Snap is going to be a camera company, emphasizing that the idea of what a camera is used for has changed over time. But Snap has also created a kind of portfolio of products around Snapchat like content and the Snap Maps feature. Spiegel also said, for example, that 30 million people have watched content related to the Olympics at the conference. All this is geared toward getting people to find a bunch of different use cases for the app, which can get them to come back over and over and keep more engaged.

“The thing that drives the business is fundamentally the engagement around the products,” Spiegel said. “That needs to be there first. Even at the time full-screen vertical video ads, no one will make those, what we’ve seen is the value delivered by getting the fundamentals right will drive the business… There’s creation, people making snaps, there’s communication which drives the frequency of use — sometimes people don’t realize, we monetize across all three behaviors.”

In a bid to capture the emerging surveillance and security solutions market, Nvidia under its Metropolis program has partnered with an Israel based AI developer AnyVision. The two companies will work towards developing smart cities by installing automatic facial recognition CCTV surveillance cameras.

Although the technology is not in India yet, but you can get an idea from James Bond movies where finding a person with matching facial features is a matter of few clicks. Mashable reports that AnyVision’s technology enables cameras that can scan for faces round the clock without uninterruptedly. The company also claims that it can automatically identify and track individuals within a large crowd with 99% accuracy. Which is later aided by algorithms working with human monitors to compare and identify a face with its database without compromising personal data that CCTV cameras collect.

Their technology is not restricted to just one platform, but can also be accessed on the go. That means you can use it with laptops, tablets and even mobile phones. It allows operators to identify and add suspects to a centralised database, and even receive notifications when the suspect is around.

While this technology seems terrifying and breaches privacy, it is can also help to society if we look at a bigger picture. It cannot just help in tracking down terrorists and criminals, but it can also identify unregistered faces and suspicious behaviour. At most, it can also be used to find individuals who have gone missing.

India is currently moving towards developing a set of cities into smart cities, which includes CCTV surveillance but without face recognition. Thanks to Aadhaar, Indian government has more than 118.64 crore population having already enrolled with the UID scheme. That means India has enough facial data registered so that may serve as a help to such technology, one day, hopefully.

NEW YORK: Bitcoin rose above $10,000 on Thursday for the first time in more than two weeks, as investors bought back the digital currency after having fallen 70 percent from its all-time peak hit in mid-December.

Bitcoin has been buffeted this year by a series of negative headlines centering around increased scrutiny by global regulators. There has also been the incidence of hacks on exchanges, the latest being the theft of roughly $532.9 million in digital money from Tokyo-based cryptocurrency exchange Coincheck a few weeks ago.

The first digital currency was also affected by the risk-off mood that permeated financial markets since the beginning of the year, undermining views that bitcoin's price moves are generally uncorrelated to other asset classes. Sentiment on risk assets such as stocks and bitcoin has since improved.

Thomas Lee, managing partner at Fundstrat Global Advisors, sees a new record peak for bitcoin by July, based on the currency's 22 corrections since 2010.

On the Luxembourg-based Bitstamp, bitcoin rose as high as $10,234 and was last at $10,123.12, up nearly 7 percent on the day.

"Bitcoin's increase has coincided with the rally in global stock markets," said Miles Eakers, chief market analyst, at FX brokerage Centtrip, adding that a sustained break above $10,000 could open the $12,000 level.

The original cryptocurrency gained more than 1,300 percent last year, capped by a lifetime peak just shy of $20,000 on Dec. 17.

Other digital currencies also rose after posting steep losses the last few weeks. Ethereum, the second-largest by market value, was up 2.5 percent over the past 24 hours at $933.24, while the third-largest, Ripple, gained 5.3 percent to $1.15, according to cryptocurrency price tracker coinmarketcap.com.

Fundstrat's Lee said bitcoin is still in a bull market phase even after a 70 percent selloff.

"During bull periods, bitcoin recoveries take 1.7 times the duration of the decline and implies that 85 days are needed to recover prior highs-this is July 2018," Lee said.

He added that 2018 will remain a strong year for cryptocurrencies, but he sees the larger and more established blockchain networks such as bitcoin and ethereum dominating again.

As bitcoin recovered, European Central Bank executive board member Yves Mersch warned in a speech in Paris on Thursday that bitcoin is not a currency, but a speculative digital asset, according to a Market News International report.

He added that because virtual currencies do not have a trusted issuer behind them, "they may become worthless at any time."

Mersch said he is not surprised that virtual currencies are not widely accepted as a means of payment.

Sony's Xperia XA1 series of phones come with a "Good night actions," feature through which users can reduce the blue light of the display. However, the company has now confirmed that the functionality will be stripped off in the Oreo update.

The confirmation came in the form of a response to a user-query on Twitter.

Plus, the company also said there are currently no plans to add such a feature to other Xperia phones.

Now, given that the feature in question is currently only limited to the Xperia XA1 lineup, the aforementioned confirmation means none of the company's smartphones will have blue light filtering functionality post the Oreo update.

For what it's worth, Sony had introduced a Night Light mode in its concept builds sometime back, but never brought that feature into its stable software channel. As you can see in the screenshot above, the company is now suggesting users to go for third-party night mode applications.

[ad_1]

New Delhi: Chinese handset maker Xiaomi is all set to announce its first new product for the year in India on Wednesday.

Xiaomi has been releasing series of tweets and teaser posts lately that hint at the launch of Redmi Note 5 – touted to be the successor to Redmi Note 4.

Although Xiaomi has not clearly mentioned as to which device it will launch today, the name "redminote5" was spotted in the code of the Mi.com website. This led to media speculations that the upcoming device will be Redmi Note 5.

Xiaomi has tweeted:

Mi fans! Join the 1st Mi product launch of 2018 on Feb 14 at 12 noon. #GiveMe5
Click the link to see how the event unfolds - https://t.co/S7i6sjV9la pic.twitter.com/wBmdZgJ6aq

— Redmi India (@RedmiIndia) February 9, 2018

A lot about the Redmi Note 5 has already been leaked online. Based on these leaked reports, it seems that the Redmi Note 5 will have an 18:9 aspect ratio with bezel-less design. It may feature a 5.99-inch full-HD+ display, Android 8.0 Oreo-based MIUI 9 build. Under the hood the device may house a Snapdragon 636 processor.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 may be priced a tad above Rs 15,000 as per leaked reports. The handset will most likely be up for flash sale next week on both Mi.com and Flipkart.

A recent teaser release by Xiaomi also hints at launch of one more device today. The teaser video just shows a little edge of a mystery device and that doesn’t resemble a smartphone. People are shown looking at a slim device from various angles fuelling speculations on the launch of its Mi TV 4.

When I first heard of Blinkist, a service that breaks down recent nonfiction books to easily digestible snippets and audio, I was afraid it would turn out to be some machine-learning-driven auto-summary thing. But in talking to co-founder Niklas Jansen at Blinkist’s headquarters in Berlin, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the company is still very much people-powered — and in fact, that may be the root of its continuing success.

The basic idea of Blinkist is to take the best of new nonfiction and condense it into pieces just a minute or two long, with entire books summed up in a series of these “blinks” totaling 15 minutes or so. Titles are added regularly, harvested from best sellers, top-10 lists and user wishlists and suggestions.

So far, so normal. But where Blinkist tries to differentiate is in the quality of these summaries. Anyone can read a book and give you a rundown of each chapter, and there are automated summary services that will do something like that, as well. But it takes someone familiar with the field and well-versed in how to communicate that information to do it well.

But wouldn’t it take a huge collection of experts, PhDs, authors and so on to keep up with the variety of nonfiction being published? Yes it would, and building just such a collection is where Blinkist has put a great deal of its resources.

As a subscription service, it has steady revenues that it can deploy intelligently, maintaining a large network of experts whom it can call on to do the critical work of dissecting a book, picking out its important parts and writing them up in a compelling way. But these summaries aren’t intended to be comprehensive — that’s why they’re called summaries.

“What’s important is that Blinkist is not intended to replace the book,” Jansen said. “We think of Blinkist as the bridge between no book and the book. There’s always a case why you should go on and buy the full book afterwards.” (And of course a link is provided.)

I was afraid, going in, that I would find out that Blinkist also did this for fiction, which I feel would defeat the point of reading it. After all, the idea in fiction is not to learn some core ideas and see them demonstrated or evidenced, but to experience a story — and the pacing, language and dialogue are critical to that. Fortunately, Blinkist understands this as well, and that is the very reason the team has not attempted it. Nonfiction is just a much more logical choice.

I must admit here that I don’t read a lot of modern nonfiction — none, really. But that doesn’t mean none of these books sound interesting to me. Blinkist seems to cater to types like myself: readers with more curiosity than time.

It’s reassuring to see a modern startup relying so heavily on the human element. Blinkist costs $50 a year to start, which sure isn’t free, but you could think of it like a “feed the humanities PhDs” fund.

[ad_1]

SINGAPORE: Electric airplane start-up Eviation Aircraft Ltd is aiming for its 9-seat commuter aircraft to be flying passengers by 2021 after signing up South Korea's Kokam as its battery supplier, the Israeli company's chief executive said on Thursday.

Venture capital-backed Eviation is one of a number of companies looking to develop small electric aircraft that would incur lower energy and operating costs, release less emissions and be quieter than their conventionally fuelled counterparts.

Airbus SE, Boeing Co and Uber Technologies Inc are also investigating electric and hybrid aircraft technology.

Eviation CEO Omer Bar-Yohay said his firm signed a deal with Kokam last week because, as a smaller supplier, Kokam was able to make batteries more specific to his company's needs.

"If I would go today to Samsung or Panasonic or LG Chem or Tesla for that matter and say I need a different cell size, they will probably laugh because the number of cells we are going to buy is not significant enough to start the design process," he told Reuters in a phone interview.

The battery will have 9,400 cells distributed throughout the aircraft including the ceiling, floor and wings, weighing 3.8 tonnes, or 60 percent of the maximum takeoff weight.

Electric airplanes are reliant on improvements in battery technology, which is why smaller aircraft are likely to be electrified years before large commercial jets.

Batteries are heavy and store far less energy per kilogram than jet fuel, but the ratio is improving gradually each year, allowing electric cars and airplanes longer ranges than they had previously.

Eviation's "Alice" airplane is expected to have a range of up to 650 nautical miles (1200 kilometres), compared to 1000 nautical miles for a similar-sized conventional Cessna Caravan. It will cost $2 million-plus, on par with the Cessna, but have far lower fuel and maintenance costs, Bar-Yohay said.

Eviation hopes to fly the Alice demonstrator for the first time by the end of the year, with the first public display at the Paris Airshow in mid-2019, he said. Moving to commercial production after that would require raising around $100 million of capital.

Given the advantages of going electric, major manufacturers are also investing in electric and hybrid aircraft technology.

Seattle-area startup Zunum Aero, backed by the venture capital arms of Boeing and JetBlue Airways Corp, announced plans in October to bring a 12-seat hybrid-electric commuter aircraft to market by 2022.

Airbus is working on the CityAirbus concept, a four-passenger electric aircraft capable of vertical takeoffs and landings, with the first demonstrator flight expected later this year. Ride-hailing firm Uber is exploring a similar concept with Uber Elevate.

Amazon has opened up the sales of the Echo devices in India to everyone. The devices can now be purchased online through Amazon.in and offline through 350 retail stores across 20 cities, including Croma, Reliance, Vijay Sales, Crossword and more.

It took the company four months to open up the sales for everyone, during which time it mostly spent making Alexa better.

Alexa in India has been revamped considerably to work with Indian voices and requirements. Alexa itself has a different and a more familiar voice in India. A new feature available now that wasn't available before is Alexa to Alexa voice calling to voice call your friends and family. The Drop-in feature is also enabled, which works for room to room calling, and lets you reach out to people in your house by telling Alexa to drop in on a particular room.

The Echo is available in three versions, the Echo Dot (INR 4499), the Echo (INR 9999) and the Echo Plus (INR 14,999).

The ARCEP, France’s equivalent of the FCC in the U.S., wants to go beyond telecommunications companies. While many regulatory authorities have focused on carriers and internet service providers, the French authority thinks Google, Apple, Amazon and all the big tech companies also need their own version of net neutrality.

The ARCEP just published a thorough 65-page report (embedded below) about the devices we use every day. The report says that devices give you a portion of the internet and prevent an open internet.

“With net neutrality, we spend all our time cleaning pipes, but nobody is looking at faucets,” ARCEP president Sébastien Soriano told me. “Everybody assumes that the devices that we use to go online don’t have a bias. But if you want to go online, you need a device just like you need a telecom company.”

With net neutrality, we spend all our time cleaning pipes, but nobody is looking at faucets
— Sébastien Soriano

Now that net neutrality has been laid down in European regulation, the ARCEP has been looking at devices for the past couple of years. And it’s true that you can feel you’re stuck in an ecosystem once you realize you have to use Apple Music on an Apple Watch, or the Amazon Echo assumes you want to buy stuff on Amazon.com when you say ‘Alexa, buy me a tooth brush’.

“The interface of the smartphone makes it much more comfortable than a computer,” Soriano said. “But they’re holding your hand — the size of the screen means that they don’t show you as many things.”

And smartphones are just the tip of the iceberg. Voice assistants and connected speakers are even less neutral than smartphones. Game consoles, smartwatches and connected cars all share the same issues.

The ARCEP doesn’t think we should go back to computers and leave our phones behind. This isn’t a debate about innovation versus regulation. Regulation can also foster innovation.

“This report has listed for the first time ever all the limitations you face as a smartphone user,” Soriano said. “By users, we mean both consumers and developers who submit apps in the stores.”

Some changes that would benefit end users

Of course, the ARCEP wants to be in charge of all those limitations so that users don’t end up being stuck forever in a closed ecosystem. You can also find a bunch of suggestions in the report. For instance, you should be able to uninstall all pre-installed apps on your phone.

You should be able to use an alternative to the App Store or Play Store because Apple and Google have their own editorial and validation teams. It forces developers to play by their rules, even though some of those rules are just here to protect Apple or Google.

They curate content on 86 percent of what we do with our smartphones
— Sébastien Soriano

Even if Apple or Google don’t want to replace their stores, you could imagine alternative search engines that connect to the App Store or Play Store thanks to APIs. There’s no reason why we can switch from Google to Qwant or DuckDuckGo, but not from the Play Store to another search engine.

“Today, apps represent 86 percent of mobile internet traffic,” Soriano said. “They curate content on 86 percent of what we do with our smartphones.”

The ARCEP wants to look at exclusive services and content. Sometimes, it’s true that exclusive services foster competition. But the ARCEP wants to keep an eye on it.

“We looked at Progressive Web Apps. Those Progressive Web Apps look interesting because it lets you combine the best of the web and apps,” Soriano said. But the ARCEP is also aware that Progressive Web Apps still aren’t as nice and powerful as native apps. “It seems a bit premature at this stage to force this model as the default model on smartphones,” Soriano said.

There are other suggestions in the report to help developers and consumers. Those are just ideas for now, but the ARCEP plans to use them soon.

Turning those suggestions into a law

“Legally, those suggestions can be passed as a law in France,” Soriano said. “If a French politician wants to reuse our suggestions into a law, it’s possible. We’re just calling out a problem we identified and making propositions.” This would be just the first step before bringing the issue to a European level.

Soriano said France’s Secretary of State for Digital Affairs Mounir Mahjoubi could be interested in those discussions involving tech platforms. He also plans to go to Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to talk with European politicians and phone manufacturers.

In all cases, this is an interesting document that asks the right questions. And if the FCC wants to reconsider its stance on net neutrality, it would be a good idea to look at tech companies in addition to telecom companies.

Corsair has introduced two new models of its compact gaming PC, the Corsair One, equipped with Coffee Lake processors.

Named the Corsair Pro Plus and Elite, each has been upgraded with Intel Core i7-8700K processors, replacing the Intel Core i7-7700K CPUs that last year’s models were equipped with at launch. Of course, with Coffee Lake CPU upgrade comes a new Z370 chipset and motherboard.

To further sweeten the pot, Corsair has also added faster Vengeance LPX DDR4-2,666MHz RAM, topping the DDR4-2,400MHz memory found in older models.

Other than that, the Corsair One’s other specifications remain the same. Both systems come with a liquid-cooled Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti as well as a water block for the CPU itself, 480GB of NVMe SSD storage and an additional 2TB HDD. The Pro Plus and Elite models of the Corsair One only differ in the amount of memory they’re each equipped with: 16GB and 32GB, respectively.

The updated Corsair One models are available to purchase now with the Elite retailing for $2,999 or £2,999 (about AU$3790) and the Pro Plus for $2,799 or £2,799 (about AU$3,540).

[ad_1]

NEW DELHI: HMD is expected to launch at least three smartphones at the upcoming MWC 2018 conference on February 25, 2018 in Barcelona, Spain. While everything is a rumour for now, smartphone tipster @evleaks has posted a few images showing the Nokia 1 and Nokia 7+, giving those rumours a certain level of legitimacy.

As seen in the tweets, Nokia 1, which will be the budget offering by HMD, will come in Blue and Red colour variants. The smartphone can be seen with ample bezels on all four sides of the display. There will be no physical buttons and the mono speakers will be placed at the bottom side of the back panel. The volume and power buttons will be placed on the right-side while the 3.5mm headphone jack will be at the top. A single rear camera with LED flash can also be seen inside a pill-shaped enclosure.

The Nokia 7+ is also shown in clear renders in a couple of images. In the first image we can see the smartphone in White colour variant with Red accents. The smartphone will be featuring an 18:9 aspect ratio display with Nokia branding on top corner and a single speaker. At the back there will be two cameras along with LED flash. Below the setup will be a fingerprint sensor.

What’s interesting is that the Nokia 7+ will come with Android One branding. If true, this could be HMD’s first Android One handset. In addition to White colour, the smartphone will also be available in dark Copper colour. The cameras at the back will be ‘Zeiss’ branded.

At MWC 2018 we may also see the flagship Nokia 9 smartphone alongside the global launches of Nokia 6 (2018) and Nokia 3310 4G version.

According to a recent report, the Nokia 6 (2018), Nokia 1 and Nokia 9 may arrive India starting April this year.
[ad_1]

Nokia purchased the French digital health company Withings back in 2016 and less than two years later is considering what to do with it. An official press release stated the Digital Health business is going into strategic review, effectively meaning Nokia is thinking if it should sell or even shut down the whole department.

Losing the Digital Health division could be a big blow for Nokia. The info about a strategic review comes just 4 months after canceling the OZO VR project due to slower-than-expected development of the market.

In the brief press message the company also stated that the Patent Business, Brand Partnerships and Technology Licensing units in Nokia Technologies are not in the scope of this review.

The modem has been manufactured using a 7nm FinFET process, which is a first. While it’s still unlikely to achieve such speeds in real life, the modem paves the way for 5G connectivity by adding support for up to seven carrier aggregation.

At peak speeds, the modem is twice as fast as Qualcomm’s previous gigabit LTE modem and even surpasses Samsung’s modem in its latest Exynos chipsets that supported up to six carrier aggregation. The X24 modem also supports 4X4 MIMO antenna arrays on five LTE carriers, that pegs the theoretical maximum to 20 concurrent LTE streams.

The X24 modem will allow smartphones to connect to the entire range of 4G spectrum bands which can increase the overall connectivity over and above the present benchmark.

While Qualcomm also announced the X50 5G modem, the X24 modem will improve 4G speeds by a lot. 5G is still some time away and while the world prepares for it, a boost in LTE speeds will be a welcome move. Additionally, even if 5G arrives soon, congested areas will still get LTE networks and the new modem will ensure the transition remains less painful for users.

Qualcomm said that the modem will show up in smartphones some time near the end of 2018 and that the it will work aside the Snapdragon X50 5G modem in 4G/5G devices when 5G devices start to roll out some time in 2019.

Digit NewsDesk news@digit.in
The guy who answered the question 'What are you doing?' with 'Nothing'.

Snapchat has always been terrible at analytics, only showing daily Story view counts that content creators had to screenshot just before they disappeared every 24 hours in order to prove their worth to sponsors. But starting today, tens of thousands creators who make official Stories or have large followings will start seeing a slew of view count and demographic analytics on their Snapchat profile.

These new analytics include:

Total Story Views in the past week, month and year to date.

Time Spent Viewing Stories in minutes in the past week, month, and year to date.

Daily unique story viewers, average time unique viewers spent watching, and completion rates

Audience demographics like gender breakdown, top age bracket, and top geographic regions

Audience interests like which lifestyle categories like film and TV, food, fashion , and sports their audiences care about

The new analytics could help creators show their total reach to secure sponsored content and product placement deals, refine their posts to match their audience, and compare their following to that on other platforms. A truck company might not care if a creator has 200,000 views a day, but if they can show those views come from men age 25-34 in the Midwest who like the outdoors, the business could pay $50,000 for the creator to feature their trucks in their Snaps.

It appears that Snapchat is changing its ways following CEO Evan Spiegel’s strategy flip-flop on the Q3 2017 earnings call when he said “We have historically neglected the creator community on Snapchat . . . In 2018, we are going to build more distribution and monetization opportunities for these creators.” Snapchat wasted a lot of time, considering I wrote about “Who will be the first Snapchat Stories celebrity?” back in 2013 a week after the feature launched, and creators like Mplatco (whose art is featured above) have been getting paid by brands like Disney since 2014.

Snapchat’s redesign puts creators in Discover where they can be promoted to potential followers

Now it’s truly embracing these independent creators for alongside the rollout of the redesign that pulls creators out of the friends’ Story list and puts them with other professional entertainers in the Discover section, but that also for the first time promotes social media stars you don’t already follow. For years Snap refused to help creators get discovered, work with them on feature launches, help them if locked out of their account, or provide monetization opportunities. It only began verifying some with a special emoji on their name last year, and there’s still no revenue sharing options like creators find on YouTube and Facebook.

One of Snapchat’s first stars who routinely pulls in five-figure sponsorship deals, comedian/singer/illustrator Shonduras, tells TechCrunch via text message “I have been dreaming of these analytics for YEARS!! and now that they are here i can honestly say… yes they are good! I have been using them in beta for awhile and have been able to learn a ton about my audience, my male/female ratios on snapchat are significantly different than all my other platforms! which really helps me create content that is better served for my snap audience!”

Creators often had to turn to unofficial third-party analytics providers to get help understanding their audiences. But that could be expensive, provide incomplete data, or require creators to turn over their login details.

Nick Cicero, CEO of social analytics startup Delmondo says the new native analytics are “a win all around. Naturally a long overdue step needed to keep more influencers in the platform who have done a lot for Snap, and it’s a great way to build a more diverse set of premium inventory and targeting data for advertisers.”

By ignoring creators, Snapchat had pushed them to competitors like Instagram and YouTube. But now they’ll have more reasons to keep creating on Snapchat, especially if new monetization opportunities emerge. For example, Twitter eventually acquired social media sponsorship broker Niche so it could support creators and start earning a cut of their deals. [Disclosure: my cousin Darren Lachtman co-founded Niche] Snapchat could similarly get into the sponsorship deal making with big stars, and/or let creators earn a cut of ads that run beside their Stories.

Shonduras concludes that “i will be the first to admit i was done with snapchat and fell away last year. but this is the change that both creators and brands needed to get back on board!! and i hope it works!”

Samsung is expected to finally take the covers off of the Galaxy S9 and S9+ on February 25 and after a long wait, official teasers of the two premium smartphones have been released by the company. Samsung has posted a total of three teasers on YouTube, each teasing one or the other camera feature coming to the new devices. While one teaser shows off the rumoured Animoji-style 3D Emojis, the other highlights the phones’ low-light photography skills. A third video teaser also hints at Samsung’s rumoured Super Slow-mo feature which can currently be seen on Sony’s Xperia smartphones.

Let’s break down the teasers a little further.

The video above shows the person’s face changing into an Animoji right at the end. An obvious camera feature lifted from the Apple iPhone X. In Samsung’s case, the feature is rumoured to be called 3D Emojis. According to a report by ETNews, Samsung’s 3D Emojis will be “more advanced” compared to Apple’s Animojis. As per the report 3D Emojis will create a 3D animated character by scanning a user’s face and also pick up fine movements of the face.

The second Samsung Galaxy S9, S9+ teaser video above shows the smartphones’ low-light photography skills. A deer can be seen in a low lit setting and the entire frame is illuminated giving the shot more clarity when an image is clicked using the new Galaxy S9 devices. The cameras on the Galaxy S9, S9+ smartphones are expected to be their USP and could support a variable aperture. The smartphones will also likely borrow from Samsung Semiconductor’s new ISOCELL range of camera sensors, including ISOCELL Bright which is meant for low-light shots. The sensor will combine four normal-sized pixels into one large pixel.

The third and final teaser shows a man in a wingsuit flying across a scenic landscape and the video suddenly slows down immensely, hinting at the rumoured Super Slow-mo camera feature. The Galaxy S9 and S9+ are expected to capture 1,000fps Super Slo-mo videos.

Looks like all the rumoured camera features of the Galaxy S9 and S9+ are actually going to make it onto the smartphones. Head here to know more about the Galaxy S9, S9+ MWC reveal and expected specs, features.
[ad_1]

Facebook's modified Messenger Kids app is now available on Android, having been already available on iOS and Amazon Fire tablets. The application is aimed at 6- to 12-year old children and lacks in-app purchases or Hide options so that parents can have more control over any unsolicited messages.

Messenger Kids

The app gives kids the ability to have more fun, the listing on the Play Store claims. Facebook added kid-appropriate stickers, GIFs, frames and emojis to help kids creatively express themselves. There are also one-to-one video calls with interactive AR masks.

Unlike the regular Messenger app, the Kids version does not ask for a phone number or need a Facebook account. Parents and approved grown-ups can use their profiles to verify the Kids account and can also check up what is going on through the regular Messenger.

Kids can block contacts and report inappropriate content in the app. When they do that, the parent or guardian will be notified.

[ad_1]

San Francisco: Apple is reportedly gearing up to introduce three new iPhones this year and one of them will be more popular than the others, a top analyst with Taiwanese business group KGI Securities has said.

According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the most famous analyst with KGI Securities when it comes to Apple, the Cupertino-headquartered giant will aim to sell 100 million units of "a 6.1-inch iPhone it`s planning to release this year".

"The 6.1-inch LCD iPhone will apparently resemble the iPhone X with a similar full-screen design, but at a more accessible price for customers. The analyst expects this new iPhone to be priced to replace iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, as cheap as $699," 9to5Mac reported late on Wednesday.

"The replacement for iPhone X is believed to consist of a three-SKU 2018 iPhone lineup. A new iPhone X style device with improved internals, a larger `iPhone X Plus` with a 6.5-inch OLED display and the 6.1-inch LCD model," the report added.

Kuo also expects iPhone X to ship a total of 62 million units in its lifetime, adding the company will cease production of this particular model mid-year.

All three devices are expected to feature "Face ID" feature and lose the home button in favour of iPhone X`s gestural navigation.

The 6.1-inch iPhone device will not get a dual camera nor 3D Touch, according to a previous KGI report.

Things are still looking pretty bleak for Huawei’s plans to conquer the U.S. market. Earlier this week, half a dozen top members of intelligence agencies, including the FBI, CIA and NSA reaffirmed surveillance concerns about the company and fellow Chinese smartphone maker ZTE.

All of this is nothing new, of course. The companies’ troubles date back at least as far back as 2012, when a House Intelligence Committee cited both as a potential security risks over close ties to the Chinese government. The following year, they were both barred from selling product to the U.S. government.

FBI director Chris Wray echoed those concerns during a hearing Tuesday, stating, “We’re deeply concerned about the risks of allowing any company or entity that is beholden to foreign governments that don’t share our values to gain positions of power inside our telecommunications networks.”

Huawei has since issued a response, accusing the government of “inhibiting [its] business in the U.S. market” and adding, “Huawei is trusted by governments and customers in 170 countries worldwide and poses no greater cybersecurity risk than any ICT vendor, sharing as we do common global supply chains and production capabilities.”

The letter closely echoed the statements of an angry Richard Yu on stage last month at CES. “We’ve won the trust of the Chinese carriers,” Yu fumed at the company’s keynote. “We’ve also won spots on all of the European carriers.”

That off-the-cuff speech came after an AT&T deal fell through last second, seemingly at the behest of the same lawmakers warning against purchasing the company’s hardware. It was a big blow for the company, given that a majority of U.S. phone purchases still go through carriers.

Meantime, Huawei has attempted to double down on non-carrier retailers here the States. That aggressive push, however, has put the company in even more hot water, as fake reviews for its flagship the Mate 10 Pro have reportedly surfaced on Best Buy’s website, apparently linked to a Facebook contest spurred on by Huawei.

PARIS: US online retail giant Amazon said on Thursday it will create 2,000 permanent contract positions this year in France, its largest market in Europe after Britain and Germany.

The increase will bring Amazon's total number of permanent French staff to 7,500 in 2018 and reflects confidence in the economy of a country where the Seattle-based retailer invested over 2 billion euros since 2010, the company said in a statement.

Earlier this month Amazon settled a long-running dispute with French tax authorities, who had been seeking nearly 200 million euros from the online retailer.

Amazon has been expanding steadily in France where it has run its Amazon Prime Now express delivery service in Paris since 2016 and it already has five logistics centres nationwide and plans to open a 142,000-square-foot delivery warehouse in 2018. Frederic Duval, General Manager for France, told Reuters he would "love it" if Amazon would expand Prime Now to other French cities though he did not say if there were plans to do so.

Amazon's purchase of Whole Foods in the United States last year has prompted speculation that the tech company could be targeting the European food and supermarket sector next.

Europe's top retailer Carrefour has notably announced plans to cut 2,400 jobs in France, boost e-commerce investment and seek a partnership in China with Tencent in the face of competition from Amazon.
[ad_1]

Essential has just announced on Twitter that those on the Oreo Beta on the Essential Phone can update to Android Oreo 8.1 Beta. Those of you with Android 7.1 will also be able to participate by sideloading the update.

Essential is working on posting the update to its website, so the only way to get Oreo 8.1 Beta at the moment is via an OTA update.

We just started rolling out Oreo Beta 8.1 through OTA. This update includes February security patches, dynamic calendar and clock icons, a slow-scrolling jitter fix (beta), and more. 😍 #EssentialPhone
Essential (@essential) February 14, 2018

The update brings the Android February security patch, along with new dynamic calendar and clock App icons. Theres also an beta fix for a slow-scrolling issue. PhoneArena reports additional changes include: smart text selection, instant apps, picture in picture, and quicker boot up and sign-in.

Its worth noting that Essential wont offer a public release of Oreo 8.0. It announced a couple of weeks ago that Oreo 8.0 has some stability issues that the company would rather not have customers experience, so it shifted its focus on updating the PH-1 to Android Oreo 8.1.

Essential will be announcing new color for the PH-1. We hope that announcement comes with more news about the Oreo update and possible an update about Essentials Home hub.
