How the experts track a stolen laptop

<div class="ex"><p style="text-align: center;"><img alt="Man With Laptop" class="aligncenter" height="196" src="http://www.new-technology-news.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/skinner-absolute-580-75.jpg" title="Man With Laptop" width="348"></p><p>You’ve heard the tales who manage to recover their laptops throughidentifying those responsible, but have you ever wondered how the professionals do it?</p><p>We spoke to the head of the investigation team that spends its time recovering stolen laptops for clients ranging from large corporates with crucial data at stake to individuals trying to get back their family photos.<span id="more-22241"></span></p><p>The clients in question are uses of Absolute Software’s LoJack for Laptops – a subscription service for Mac and PC.</p><p>The protection includes software at the firmware level, but also includes the services of a specialist recovery team who investigate a theft on your behalf after you report it.</p><p>We spoke to Derek Skinner, Head of Recovery for Absolute in Europe. He leads a squad of ex-Police</p><div><strong>Straight talking</strong><p></p><figure><img alt="TechRadar opinion articles" class="aligncenter" height="196" src="http://www.new-technology-news.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/speed-typing-580-100.jpg" width="348"></figure> </div><p>Globally, there are over 40 investigators. “We’re all ex law enforcement,” says Skinner “so we all speak the language and have a skill for investigation. It’s a unique service.”</p><p>“We’ve a thousand years of policing experience between us. A lot of the police services use our product and know who we are. We then create our evidence packs and supply them to the investigating officer.”</p><p>What’s the success rate? “It’s three out of four, 23,000 total recoveries. It’s a huge amount.”</p><h4>How the tracking happens</h4><p>So how does it work? “What happens is say your laptop is covered by us and gets stolen or lost. You report it stolen Via the internet portal or helpline.” Local law enforcement is involved straight away. “We can’t do anything at all until there’s a police investigation in place,” explains Skinner.</p><p>“We are basically the agent for our customer, we’ll contact the agency involved – we’ve got 6,500 law enforcement contacts globally. A huge database.”</p><p>In terms of the software involved, the laptop has a tracking agent hich changes its state. “It calls back to us and says ‘am I OK?’ and we say ‘no you’re stolen, call back in 15 minutes’.</p><p>“It starts to call back across any internet connection, could be GSM, could be Wi-Fi. It’s all covert, you can’t see this kind of chatter. Then we actually force a couple of other tools onto the device – our forensic tools basically – so we start collecting much more information from the machine than we did in its normal state.</p><h4>Undetectable software</h4><p>We were intrigued how the software avoids detection. “The software bodyguard sits in the firmware, so you could take out the hard drive or format it or do what you like – as soon as the laptop is switched on again the firmware agent will check with the software agent, see it’s been compromised and install a new version; the persistence level is very high.”</p><p>So what happens next? “The case is assigned to an investigator and there’s a personal contact then between the aggrieved individual and the investigator. On the technical side, as soon as the extra software is installed, it starts to send back screen captures, key captures, file retrieval, Wi-Fi triangulation or GPS points.”</p><div><strong>Get more</strong><p></p><figure><img alt="Sony AIO" class="aligncenter" height="196" src="http://www.new-technology-news.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/sony-aio-580-100.jpg" width="348"></figure> </div><p>The investigators are key at this stage. “All the bits of information are worth nothing if you can’t compile them correctly to supply them to law enforcement.”</p><p>People are pinpointed through what they do with the system. “Facebook is a big help,” says Skinner. “Obviously people order things online, eBay is a big one. All these [are] pockets of information we can pull together and validate using investigative tools that a police officer would use every day and looking at photos and triangulation maps.</p><h4>Should you do anything yourself?</h4><p>We also asked Skinner what he thought of vigilante action to recover stolen devices, such as the recent UK case of a man filming someone on a trainwhen he stole a phone.</p><p>“No. There’s some real horror stories our there, certainly in the US there was a fatal shooting in Dallas over a laptop with tracking software and there have been numerous issues with Find My iPhone. Obviously one iPhone is identical to another iPhone – what good is a map?</p><p>“Go to Paddington Station and see how many iPhones you can find there. Evidentially it’s so weak and that’s the problem with a lot of the DIY solutions; the evidence is not presented correctly, it’s not interpreted correctly.</p><p>“And it’s a folly to believe that people that steal laptops are just laptop thieves. We’ve uncovered drug rings, stolen cars, huge handling organisations where they handle tech to go out to Pakistan and Eastern Europe. You’re hardly going to knock on the door and say ‘can I have my laptop back please?’</p><p>“The idea may be good – 70 per cent of people say they would go themselves but it’s a horrific thought. We deal with some pretty top-end criminals. A lot of these other software apps are actually downright illegal and have no certifications.</p><h4>A global problem</h4><p>If laptops can’t be recovered, the device can be completely wiped and, in some cases, bricked. “The data can be wiped to FBI standard – seven times overpass – so the data is safe,” says Skinner.</p><div><strong>Buying Guide</strong><p></p><figure></figure> </div><p>“Obviously we always want to recover the device as well, but it also adds the ability to get some closure – it potentially becomes a paperweight, nobody gains from the theft. On the other hand the device is clean and unusable.”</p><p>So where do laptops end up? Everywhere it seems. “We get devices that travel around the world in days, faster than FedEx.”</p><p>With people? “Yes. Obviously if it ends up in a warzone we’re limited with what we can do, but we can still lock the device at the firmware level with a notice – we can write what we like. Often we can make it very personal and point out that individual.</p><p>“You’d be amazed, we’ve had recoveries from Nigeria, Uganda, Northern Pakistan, unstable parts of the world, just by putting enough pressure on them. We had a device go to Pakistan from the UK and back and he was picked up entering the country illegally. With the recent failings of HP’s WebOS many have speculated the possibilities of Samsung or even HTC buying up the failed OS by HP. We have seen plenty of reports regarding this exact situation and now with the Apple vs Samsung lawsuits and Google buying Motorola the time for Samsung to make a move might be closer than we think.</div> <div style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px;"> <span style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; line-height: 1.5;"></span></div> <div style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px;"> Over at ft.com they even went as far as to say “Samsung needs to hit the reset button.” With the Galaxy Tab 10.1 banned in Europe, Netherlands, parts of Australia and possibly more areas things are getting a bit dire for Samsung. Next on Apple’s sights is the U.S. market and they aim to seek injunctions against the entire Galaxy S and Tab arsenal from Samsung. If things were ugly before, they are only going to get worse.</div> <div style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px;"> Samsung is primarily a hardware manufacturer and they are great at it, but as far as software goes, they are a bit lacking. This is what many consider their weakest link and something that may ultimately cost them down the road. Getting software out isn’t nearly as easy for the company as the hardware aspect of things and small acquisitions like Steve Kondik wont help them in the long run.</div> <div style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px;"> According to rumors, Google’s recent move into the hardware side of things when they acquired Motorola Mobility seriously raises both the stakes and the concerns for Samsung, and they can no longer expect to reply on Android throughout the future. Recent reports out of South Korea suggest that Samsung had been dismissive of the government’s idea or suggestions of building a homegrown operating system – until the Google Motorola acquisition.</div> <div style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px;"> Is Samsung in a difficult position and need to rethink their strategy and plans for the future, or will Android remain open and fair following the Motorola deal? A potential purchase of their own OS to slim down their dependance on Android could be in Samsung’s future and may even be a top priority for Samsung but none of this has been remotely confirmed. Do you guys think the Google-Motorola acquisition will cause issues in the future for other manufacturers such as Samsung, HTC, and LG or is this all just speculation?</div> </div> </div>

Now labeled Verizon Video, this application has had its interface updated and a substantial increase in available content. Previously at Android 3.0, this update will include improved speed performance, application size scaling, and the ability to sync media from the SD card. A maintenance update for the HTC EVO 4G also rolled out this week in hopes to fix some bugs with SMS, voice recognition, and Picasa.</div> <div style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px;"> The Samsung Galaxy S II was banned in Europe due to the Apple injunction previously filed. The device is currently banned from sale across the entire European Union. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is still banned from sale throughout Germany until September 9th. Samsung released their Galaxy smartphone naming scheme Wednesday. The way devices are named will directly correlate with what tier they belong to. Unilke other manufacturers, Samsung has done this to help public know precisely what type of device they are buying – whether it be flagship or entry level device. It’s big in Europe, it’s big in Asia, it’s big all over the world they say, “and soon it will be big in America.” Is this again some indication that the Samsung Unpacked at IFA 2011 trailers were indeed speaking about something having to do with the Samsung Galaxy S II or an upgrade? Several placements of the phone are done showing absurd combinations of real people or landmarks and a video of a replacement part on the smartphone. One thing to note that many radical religion-wild viewers might have a problem with is the RIO Jesus being covered up by a unicycler while the words “Millions of devoted followers” on top.</div> <div style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px;"> What do you think? Massively offensive or just harmless fun? We’re majorly on the harmless fun side, and certainly can’t wait for the device to be released here in the states. Samsung later responded and now we are seeing reports that Apple might have altered some of the evidence. They are going after all tablets and smartphones here, rather than just the Galaxy Tab 10.1 like we’ve seen thus far. Apple’s new, parallel filing in the Netherlands details patent infringement also, rather than just copying design elements like in the European case. An investigation by Webwereld.nl found modified photos of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 had been submitted to the court as evidence which gave the appearance of a much stronger similarity between Apple and Samsung’s devices.</div> <div style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px;"> Apple’s iPad 2 has an aspect ratio of 1.30, while the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has a noticeably wider aspect ratio of 1.46. In the image submitted, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was stretched to have an apparent aspect ratio of 1.36. 8% wider than the actual device, and much closer to the iPad 2. The update hit a few unbranded Germany roaming HTC Sensation phones but should be rolling out to other carriers throughout the next week or so. Kaz Hirai to become Sony Computer Entertainment Chairman, leave Andrew House with tough CEO gig

No firings at PlayStation headquarters, however our old pal Kaz Hirai is getting a new position as Sony Computer Entertainment Chairman, with Andrew House succeeding him in the CEO hot seat. Mr. House was previously Sony's PlayStation chief in Europe, so he's simply stepping up to be responsible for the company's global operations, but Kaz's new duties are less clearly defined. Both changes will go into effect on September 1st, a day after current Chairman Akira Sato retires, giving both Kaz and Andrew a little time to get accustomed to their new(ish) surroundings before tackling Sony's massively important PS Vita launch at the tail end of the year.

Sharp to look to Europe for Galapagos

<P align=center><img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//classifications/computing/mobile-computing/Tablets%20and%20touchscreens/Sharp-Galapagos-Android-Tablet-200-200.jpg"></P> <br /><P>Sharp has suggested that it could expand its Galapagos e-reader into the UK and Europe in the coming months. </P><br /><P>The UK has a burgeoning e-reader market, fuelled partly by the popular Amazon Kindle, and Sharp is keen to extend the first Galapagos device beyond Japan.</P><br /><P>The first new market to be tested will be the US, but Sharp's Masami Ohbatake has indicated that China and Europe will be next.</P><br /><P>"After the U.S., we're looking at other regions where electronic-book reading is increasing,"Ohbatake told <a href="">Bloomberg</A>. </P><br /><P><STRONG>Price of success</STRONG></P><br /><P>The Galapagos e-reader 10.8 inch tablet is currently more expensive than the Apple iPad in Japan, and many doubt that the device will be a hit. </P><br /><P>A major content deal in Japan – with the equivalent to the UK's WH Smith – has given the device some hope, but with the likes of Amazon already dominant in the UK it may be tough to break into the market. </P>
