This Galapagos tablet is also known as the EB-W71LJ-H if you happen to have a fetish for model numbers, and if one were to look at Sharp’s naming convention to date, it would most probably come with a 7″ display, making it the ideal go-between model as there are already 5″ and 10″ models from the Galapagos line which we already know. Test results have also revealed the presence of a 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi radio, but apart from that, other details are as scant as hair on Kojak’s noggin’. This is because Sharp specifically put in a request to the FCC to keep their trade secrets under lock and key – for now. That’s what Sharp is banking on, and if our brief history with the Galapagos name is any indication, we’re in for a hit-or-miss ride. What this tablet COULD mean for us is a 7-inch tablet (though in the past we’ve also hear 5-inch and/or 10-inch, just to cover all the bases, and an Android with massively present user interface overlay. Big fat tablets from the East, what we desire! You’ll also want to learn the following: the 10.8-inch version of this tablet rolled through the FCC earlier this year. You’ll be having a look now at the EB-W71LJ-H, which if you follow along with the names, the EB-W51GJ being the 5.5-inch model, you’ll see that a 7-incher is indeed on the way. All we know about this tablet thus far is that it’ll be connecting over 802.11b/g/n WiFi radio and that it is, indeed, on its way into America. Now we’ve just got to decide if it’ll be any better than every other tablet we’ve gotten to see over the past few weeks and months – and wonder if it’ll feature Ice Cream Sandwich by the time it comes out, or if it’ll still be rocking Honeycomb. What it looks like from this angle is the Acer Iconia Tab A500, which, if you did not know, is a pretty sweet little ride of a tablet in itself. Believe that.

The UK has a burgeoning e-reader market, fuelled partly by the popular Amazon Kindle, and Sharp is keen to extend the first Galapagos device beyond Japan. The first new market to be tested will be the US, but Sharp's Masami Ohbatake has indicated that China and Europe will be next. "After the U.S., we're looking at other regions where electronic-book reading is increasing,"Ohbatake told <a href="">Bloomberg</A>. Price of success The Galapagos e-reader 10.8 inch tablet is currently more expensive than the Apple iPad in Japan, and many doubt that the device will be a hit. A major content deal in Japan – with the equivalent to the UK's WH Smith – has given the device some hope, but with the likes of Amazon already dominant in the UK it may be tough to break into the market.

Sharp wants one million Galapagos tablet sales

Galapagos represents Sharp's big push into content delivery plus hardware, with a host of devices planned starting with the eagerly awaited tablet and, of course, 3D mobile phones. There are, as yet, no plans to bring Galapagos to the UK, but it is an indication of the size of Sharp that it believes it can take on the likes of Korean giant Samsung and, of course, Apple. Android The Galapagos tablet will bring the now-familiar Android operating system, and will be available in both a 10.8-inch version and a Streak-like 5.5 inch size which is akin to an oversized smartphone. Price wise, the 10.8-inch model will apparently be somewhere around the £500 mark with the smaller version considerably less. The tablet will reportedly not allow users to install their own software, but will run Sharp's own e-reader software and media player. Sharp is hoping a tie-up with a major Japanese content owner will give them the lead in its home market, and has targeted one million sales for the tablet. Whether that eventually leads to a global launch remains to be seen.
