I found out first hand. It's a shame that there actually are people out there that seem to have nothing better to do then to hack a system or trash an account.There are ways to prevent most situations and one that I now practice that is very important is setting passwords for access. When a young relative asks for some money, for future reference don't tell them to write an article and you will cash them out because there is also a strong possibility that what they post was posted or copied from somewhere else.Setting your access ability to administrator also helps to protect you from the unwanted user. We see it happen every day on the news and in the newspapers, Identity theft is high. Hackers are easily accessing credit card numbers as well as other info. Allen's Interval Licensing, the patent arm of Interval Research, filed the revised patent infringement lawsuit against these big-hitting tech giants this week. The US district court told Allen's lawyers that Interval had until December 28 to refile the lawsuit, which is exactly what they have done. Patently hopping mad The new lawsuit includes numerous screengrabs of websites and services that Interval claim shows infringement on its patents. The lawsuit accuses Apple, Facebook, eBay, Netflix, AOL, Yahoo!, Office Depot, OfficeMax, YouTube and Staples of infringing on four patents held by Interval Licensing that relate to e-commerce and online search functions. FOSS Patents' <a href="http://fosspatents.blogspot.com/2010/12/paul-allens-interval-licensing-refiles.html">analysis of the patent complaint</A> by notes that Google's Android operating system – and its notification system for texts, Google Voice messages, emails and other alerts "to a user of a mobile device in an unobtrusive manner that occupies the peripheral attention of the user" – is directly under fire from Allen's lawsuit. "If any of those infringement assertions against Android [are] true, this can spell trouble for makers of Android-based devices, and for Android application developers," notes FOSS Patent's Florian Mueller. "Patent holders can choose to sue Google, device makers, application developers, users, or any combination of the foregoing options." Expect to hear a lot more on developments in Paul Allen's patent infringement lawsuit against Facebook, Apple, Google, and others as this particular tech patent drama plays itself out in court in the coming weeks.

During recent years, data thieves have compromised computer systems at a myriad of universities, including Ohio University, Notre Dame University, Georgetown University, Western Illinois University and University of Alaska-Fairbanks, leaving many questioning the vulnerabilities of campus networks, and challenging college Information Technology (IT) personnel to find new approaches to securing the personal data of students, faculty and alumni. While a slew of hacking incidents in corporate America have gained recent national attention, experts say that academic institutions are in many ways more vulnerable than corporations to security breaches because universities engender a culture that emphasizes openness and information sharing, not firewalls and threat prevention. "Even though most colleges and universities employ a professional IT staff, each campus department or office might run its own computer system on the school's network," said Clete Rickert, director of information systems at Villanova University, and a Nuesoft Xpress client. "While this decentralized approach to managing information helps to contribute to the collaborative, open environment that universities foster, it also detracts from IT's ability to effectively secure all of the computers on the network at any given time." To counter this security challenge, IT professionals are beginning to look for ways to house sensitive data - such as patient information in a health or counseling center - off site, instead of storing it on a campus server that may or may not be sufficiently protected. One option for many IT staff is the application service provider (ASP) model. ASPs host data and manage software programs for a wide variety of users from a secure, centralized data center. Some ASP applications are delivered via a Web browser. Others, like Nuesoft Xpress, avoid the browser environment altogether, and are delivered by a secure Internet connection between the user's desktop and the ASP's data center. With so much to think about when considering how to deliver mission critical applications and keep data safe, Rickert advises decision makers to take their time and consider options carefully. "The notion of handing over your data to an ASP provider might be a little daunting to some people," he said. "And, if you do decide to move toward an ASP model, you then have to consider which type of ASP will best suit your needs. When Villanova's health center staff came to (the IT department) for input during a search for practice management software, we chose Nuesoft Xpress because we felt more comfortable with the security and audit features that an Internet-based system has to offer." Nuesoft Technologies Chief Technology Officer Shahram Famorzadeh elaborates: "The fact that the Xpress application is written in Java code adds a second layer of security that a browser-based system can not provide," he said. "Most hackers are very familiar with the addresses of the ports and the protocols that browsers use to send and receive data. That information is standard, and so is commonly known. Additionally, the theft of the users' security credential, one of the most common security vulnerability risks, via 'phishing' techniques is not applicable in non-browser systems. "By avoiding browsers, Nuesoft Technologies can use proprietary protocols and ports that are not commonly published, hence minimizing intrusion risks. Nuesoft strictly controls not only what gets sent, but how it is sent." And an added layer of protection might not be a bad idea in a university environment where the prevailing philosophy is to allow most everything into the network, rather than keeping most everything out with a firewall. "Until colleges move away from their current open network approach to security, keeping hackers away will continue to be a challenge, and IT professionals will need to turn to ASP models or other options to provide secure solutions to the campus departments that depend on them," Rickert said.

FilmOn has been around since 2009 and is the brain child of billionaire movie producer Alki David. In September it was celebrating being the first IPTV venture to release TV feeds in HD in the US. However, a month later the big boys of American TV networks – Fox, CBS, ABC and NBC – managed to get the site to turn off its web streams of their channels. These feeds were halted due to copyright problems. When the US networks issued a lawsuit, David said <a href="">at the time</A>: "It's all just semantics. People need to stop being afraid of opening up doors to digital technology." Not an authorised service This hasn't happened and now UK broadcasters have got involved, with ITV saying in a statement: "FilmOn is not an authorised service and we reserve the right to pursue any site or service we believe to be infringing our copyright or using our content in an unlicensed, illegal capacity." The problem seems to be that FilmOn is rebroadcasting live TV over the web without the permission of the channels. When it comes to free-to-air channels, David believes the site is doing nothing wrong, explaining: "There is no difference between the Internet and satellite. "There's little difference between having a digital television box (and having television delivered through a computer)." It's now up to the courts to decide if this is the case.

Now, United States International Trade Commission (ITC) has put up a notice stating that the patents case filed by Apple on Motorola would be investigated. And if Motorola phones and software are found infringing any Apple patents then ITC might issue an import ban order for Motorola handsets. Only after the investigation is over, we'll get to see which company has infringed patents - technically or legally. On October 6, Motorola had filed a suit against Apple for infringing about 18 Motorola patents with iPhone, iPod touch, select Mac computers, MobileMe and App Store services. Following that, Apple counter sued Motorola for infringing six specific patents. The ITC is a quasi-judicial entity that was formed to protect the domestic U.S. market against unfair trade practices and it possesses power to ban imports if the products are found infringing U.S. patents. Earlier this month, the year old Nokia-Apple patent infringement lawsuit investigation had commenced and Nokia won the higher ground since Apple didn't provide enough evidence to prove patent violations. In the "Directory Security" tab, click "Edit" under "Anonymous Access and Authentication Control."To restrict IP addresses, navigate to the "Directory Security" and click "Edit" under "IP Address and Domain Name Restrictions." Add allowed or denied IP addresses by clicking "Add" after clicking the "Granted Access" or "Denied Access" radio button.Configure the router (your firewall) to allow requests from certain ports only. "Broadband providers need to stop advertising speeds that not a single customer can receive and we're asking people to support our call for change by signing up to stopthebroadbandcon.org. "Faster broadband means better broadband, whether you're surfing the web, watching TV online or downloading music and UK consumers deserve superfast broadband they can trust, rather than having to rely on the fairytales and broken promises of current broadband advertising." Your operating system, depending on its version and brand, may also have its own firewall settings which can also help secure your network.Level 5: Anti-virus and anti-spyware softwareIt cannot be emphasized enough how important it actually is to protect your computer from viruses, spywares and malwares. At the time of writing this, the current top trending topic in the UK is <a href="http://twitter.com/#%21/search/%23iamspartacus">#IAmSpartacus</A>, a hashtag that <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/twitter-joke-trial-sparks-i-am-spartacus-uprising-907709">thousands of users</A> have applied to Paul Chamber's original tweet, which landed him with a criminal record this week. Robertson explained to TechRadar that "It's highly unlikely that action will be taken against those repeating what Chambers tweeted. "While lots of people saw Chambers's original tweet as a joke that, at worst, was in bad taste, the prosecutor and the judge clearly didn't. They saw it as criminally menacing. Big payout Robertson continued: "I can't see a prosecutor taking action over the retweeters, though. Aside from the profile of this protest, the retweeters arguably make clear their satirical intent by using the Spartacus hashtag." The <a href="http://www.out-law.com/page-11545">Out-Law.com</A> editor does warn, however, that those using the hashtag aren't completely safe from the law, saying: "It's worth noting that you don't avoid responsibility for a message just because you're repeating what somebody else said. "A person who retweets a libellous message could themselves be sued for libel – and if they have more followers than the original author, they could be facing the bigger payout." This may be food for thought for all the celebrities who have jumped on the Twitter Joke Trial bandwagon.
