Apple's Asia-Pacific profits reportedly soaring

Over the past five years, Apple's revenue has climbed from US$14 billion in 2005 to $64 billion in 2010. During that time, international revenue grew a staggering 727%, while US revenue grew 268%. Profit showed a similar trend with Asia-Pacific increasing by a whopping 2,991% in the last five years. US profit also grew, but only at a comparatively small rate of 682%.<br/><br/>This upward trend is expected to continue in the current 2011 fiscal year. Last year, Apple reported $8.25 billion in sales to the Asia-Pacific region. We are half way through this year and Apple has already reached $5 billion in sales. Its sales are expected to quadruple year-over-year, and Apple hasn't even tapped into China's lucrative mobile phone market.<br/><br/>Apple sells the iPhone through China Unicom, which has 170 million subscribers (a number that pales in comparison with 600 million subscribers on China Mobile). Overall, China has over 900 million mobile phone users. If Apple could produce an iPhone for China Mobile and China Telecom, its resulting revenue and profits could go off the charts.

In a recent survey of Americans who own iPads, 17 percent said they already own more than one iPad, and another fifth (19 percent) said that they were considering purchasing another device in the future. And which device are they considering? Another iPad, of course. The most common reason given for purchasing another iPad is that someone else in the household (either a spouse or a child) is using the one they've already got.<br /> <br /> That's pretty crazy. Not only is the iPad strongly demanded by people who haven't bought one yet, Apple actually has a good chance of selling yet another iPad to households who already have one. This backs up what we've heard about customer usage as well: people are tending to use their iPad more the longer they've owned it.<br /> <br /> A figure like this helps lend some credence to those gigantic predictions for iPad sales in 2011. <P align=center><img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//Review%20images/TechRadar/Home%20Entertainment/appletv-2010/appletv2010-17-200-200.jpg"></P> <br /><P>Apple has announced that its Apple TV will hit its millionth sale this week – despite lukewarm reviews for the company's media streaming offering. </P><br /><P>The new Apple TV was announced on 1 September by Steve Jobs, but the UK offering was let down by a lack of content and the pricing of shows available. </P><br /><P>However, that has not hampered global sales – with one million units sold according to the Cupertino-based company. </P><br /><P><STRONG>1 million units</STRONG></P><br /><P>"Apple today announced that it expects sales of its new Apple TV to top one million units later this week, stated Apple's press release.</P><br /><P>"The new Apple TV offers the simplest way to watch your favorite HD movies and TV shows, stream content from Netflix, YouTube, Flickr and MobileMe, all on your HD TV for the breakthrough price of just $99. </P><br /><P>"iTunes users are now renting and purchasing over 400,000 TV episodes and over 150,000 movies per day."</P><br /><P>The $99 price tag translated to £99 in the UK – a significant hike considering the service on offer was considerably less rounded. </P>

<P align=center><img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//Review%20images/TechRadar/Gadgets/New%20Amazon%20Kindle%203/main%20kindle%203-200-200.jpg"></P> <br /><P>Amazon will sell 8 million Kindles in 2010, with the e-reader selling 60 per cent more than analysts had suggested. </P><br /><P>The latest <a href="">Amazon Kindle 3</A> has really caught the wave, and a big marketing campaign has been in evidence across the UK. </P><br /><P>And the device is a success on a global level according to Bloomberg's Businessweek, who suggested 8 million of the devices have been sold.</P><br /><P><STRONG>Low price-point</STRONG></P><br /><P>The Kindle has benefited from a low price-point and the growing awareness of e-readers. </P><br /><P>Priced at £109 and £149 in the UK, the device is likely to be on many Christmas lists, and, assuming the deliveries have got through, Amazon will also benefit from selling digital books through its extensive library. </P><br /><P>There has, however, been criticism from some quarters that digital copies are not significantly cheaper than the physical books, despite virtually no cost in replication. </P><br /><P>Some are also keen to see a digital copy being offered along with a physical book, meaning that using the kindle on your commute doesn't mean you need miss on the tactile pleasure of a real book when carrying it around is less of an issue.</P>

The reason? Seems folks are holding off on buying televisions in a big way: the company suffered a "low-double digit' decline in boob tube sales, even worse than an industry average in the single digits, which would suggest that 2010's 3D revolution hasn't attracted the kind of consumer attention manufacturers (and content providers) would've liked. If there's a silver lining, it's that double digit increases in phone sales -- combined with a single digit boost in tablets and related mobile devices (read: iPads) -- helped to offset the TV decline. Of course, we're sure people will need new LCDs and plasmas eventually... but maybe it's going to have to wait for 4K.

<img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//Review%20images/TechRadar/Gadgets/New%20Amazon%20Kindle%203/main%20kindle%203-200-200.jpg"> <br /><P>A new study suggests that the e-reader market has seen massive growth in 2010, with sales of the devices increasing by 79.8 per cent this year, when compared to 2009.</P><br /><P>Gartner, creators of the study, reveal that there will be a total of 6.6 million units sold in 2010 – in 2009, just 3.6 million units were sold.</P><br /><P>That's a lot of <a href="">Amazon Kindles</A> and <a href="">Sony Readers</A>.</P><br /><P><STRONG>Sale of the century</STRONG></P><br /><P>This impressive surge in e-reader buying is set to increase in 2011, with Gartner predicting that sales will be up 68.3 per cent.</P><br /><P>With these figures come the warning that the market could well be cannibalised by the inevitable growth in tablet sales. </P><br /><P>However, e-reader manufacturers could fight the tablet explosion with keeping prices low.</P><br /><P>"E-reader vendors will need to offer lower prices than for more fully featured media tablets," explained Allen Weiner, research vice president at Gartner. </P><br /><P>"This will entail smaller profit margins and potential hardware subsidies at retail, and/or the ability to obtain lower-priced components. </P><br /><P>"We think few end users will buy both an e-reader and a media tablet, so it is important that e-readers retain a price advantage."</P><br /><P>This week Google announced the arrival of its online book store, <a href="">Google eBooks</A>, in the US.</P>

Sharp wants one million Galapagos tablet sales

<img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//classifications/computing/mobile-computing/Tablets%20and%20touchscreens/Sharp-Galapagos-Android-Tablet-200-200.jpg"><br /><P>Sharp believes that it can sell one million Galapagos tablets, but don't hold your breath for any UK availability. </P><br /><P>Galapagos represents Sharp's big push into content delivery plus hardware, with a host of devices planned starting with the eagerly awaited tablet and, of course, 3D mobile phones. </P><br /><P>There are, as yet, no plans to bring Galapagos to the UK, but it is an indication of the size of Sharp that it believes it can take on the likes of Korean giant Samsung and, of course, Apple. </P><br /><P><STRONG>Android</STRONG></P><br /><P>The Galapagos tablet will bring the now-familiar Android operating system, and will be available in both a 10.8-inch version and a Streak-like 5.5 inch size which is akin to an oversized smartphone.</P><br /><P>Price wise, the 10.8-inch model will apparently be somewhere around the £500 mark with the smaller version considerably less. </P><br /><P>The tablet will reportedly not allow users to install their own software, but will run Sharp's own e-reader software and media player. </P><br /><P>Sharp is hoping a tie-up with a major Japanese content owner will give them the lead in its home market, and has targeted one million sales for the tablet. </P><br /><P>Whether that eventually leads to a global launch remains to be seen.</P>

<img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/classifications/Mobile%20Phones/Nokia/Nokia_N8_Vasco_Black_multiview_h1-200-200.jpg"><br /><P>Nokia may have been taking a battering recently, and news that its European <a href="http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/nokia-n8-692448/review">Nokia N8</A> sales are being destroyed by the <a href="http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/apple-iphone-4-694980/review">iPhone 4</A>'s won't help things.</P><br /><P>Apple's latest phone is apparently outselling the N8 by a margin of six to one, according to a Morgan Stanley survey of 150 phone shops in five European countries.</P><br /><P>However, given that Nokia is in the process of trying to stem the tide of users running to Android handsets and iPhones, this apparently isn't as bad as it sounds.</P><br /><P><STRONG>Anything's better than nothing</STRONG></P><br /><P>Patrick Standaert, the author of the survey, says that expectations for the phone are so low that projected sales of nine million N8 handsets sold in 2011 would be a decent return for Nokia.</P><br /><P>And users are apparently staying pretty positive on the phone too, with most reporting to be very happy with the Nokia offering.</P><br /><P>We're still not sure Symbian^3 is an advanced enough platform for Nokia to take on the likes of Google and Apple in the mobile space (imagine writing that sentence four years ago...) but if MeeGo can spit out some tasty handsets, then Nokia could quite feasibly hold on to its smartphone lead.</P>

<img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//classifications/images/kinect-accessories-200-200.jpg"><br /><P>Microsoft is already half way to reaching its five million Christmas sales target with Kinect, having already sold over 2.5 million units since launch.</P><br /><P>Microsoft sold a million Kinects within the first 10 days the new motion controller had been on sale, with the platform holder confident that it is set to hit its targets for this coming Christmas season.</P><br /><P><STRONG>Stocking the shelves</STRONG></P><br /><P>The initial sales target was to sell three million units, which it looks like the Xbox 360 manufacturer is easily going to achieve by early December.</P><br /><P>"We are thrilled about the consumer response to Kinect, and are working hard with our retail and manufacturing partners to expedite production and shipments of Kinect to restock shelves as fast as possible to keep up with demand," Microsoft's president of the Interactive Entertainment Business Don Mattrick stated.</P><br /><P>"With sales already exceeding two and a half million units in just 25 days, we are on pace to reach our forecast of 5m units sold to consumers this holiday."</P><br /><P>The news follows the busy Black Friday weekend over in the US, traditionally the busiest Christmas present buying weekend.</P>

<P>Dell reported a disappointingly small growth in its consumer business this week, although profits were still boosted by computer sales to the business sector.</P><br /><P>Dell's profits were up on its last quarter, despite the minimal four per cent growth in sales to consumers.</P><br /><P>"We're seeing weakness in consumer demand, and we'll continue to manage that," said Dell's Chief Financial Officer Brian Gladden.</P><br /><P>"We're improving profit in our consumer business, which is something we've been focused on."</P><br /><P><STRONG>Weakness in consumer market</STRONG></P><br /><P>Dell Inc reports that sales to large corporate customers were up 27 per cent in the same quarter, while public sector revenue was up 20 per cent and sales to medium-sized businesses were up 24 per cent.</P><br /><P>Around 80 per cent of Dell's overall sales come from business customers, with many now refreshing old PCs and servers as they emerge from the recessionary cost-cutting and belt-tightening of the last few years.</P><br /><P>As such, Dell's desktop PC sales were up 21 per cent and server sales were up 20 per cent.</P><br /><P>CEO Michael Dell said in a statement: "Dell is growing in the right areas, and I'm very excited about our momentum." </P><br /><P>Dell reaffirmed its forecast for full-year revenue growth of 14 per cent to 19 per cent.</P>
