Mobile, said of the findings: "You could be spending hundreds of pounds more than you need to on your mobile every year if you're not on the right tariff.<br /> "If you regularly spend more than your line rental, check your bill to see where you're incurring the extra charges as you may be able to save money by moving to a tariff with more minutes, texts or data.<br /> "If you never go over your agreed line rental, it's because you're not using up your allowance so you may be able to save money by finding a cheaper tariff that reflects your usage."<br /> The Which? survey was based on results from 1,271 adults aged 16 or more.<br /> <br /> <a href="http://www.techradar.com%20/">Source.</a>

<P align=center><img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//classifications/images/eeetop_sc-200-200.jpg"></P><br /><P>A new report reveals that over a million British schoolkids have no access to a computer at home, with the Department for Education refusing to comment on the findings.</P><br /><P>With over a million UK children 'lacking access to computers' at home, the impact on their education is clear, with computers becoming an increasingly important tool for homework and working on collaborative school projects.</P><br /><P><STRONG>Two million not online</STRONG></P><br /><P>In addition to the worryingly high number of kids that do not have access to a PC or Mac at home, nearly two million are also unable to get online at home, according to the report from the the E-Learning Foundation charity.</P><br /><P>Those children from the poorest families in the UK are two-and-a-half-times less likely to have net access at home compared with kids from families at the other end of the social spectrum. </P><br /><P>The E-Learning Foundation has a clear objective – to ensure every British school-age child has access to a computer with an internet connection at home.</P><br /><P><STRONG>Poverty tech trap</STRONG></P><br /><P>The Department for Education has so far refused to comment on the latest findings.</P><br /><P>The E-Learning Foundation's chief executive, Valerie Thompson, said: "With so many children swamped with gifts from family and friends over the Christmas period it is important we reflect on the fact that millions of children live in poverty in this country. </P><br /><P>"For those at school, this translates into very tangible disadvantages when it comes to completing homework, researching topics, independent learning, and communicating with teachers and classmates on the school learning platform. </P><br /><P>"Without the use of a computer and the ability to go online at home the attainment gap that characterises children from low income families is simply going to get worse."</P><br /><P><a href="http://www.techradar.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Source</A></P>

<P align=center><img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//classifications/Mobile%20Phones/Hands%20on%20pictures/Windows%20Phone%207/Picture%20001-200-200.jpg"></P> <br /><P>Microsoft has revealed that more than 1.5 million Windows Phone 7 handsets were sold to retailers in the first six weeks following the mobile operating system's launch. </P><br /><P>The information only states how many phones were purchased by the retail chain rather than are in the pockets of consumers, but gives a rough idea of the numbers we're talking about.</P><br /><P>Windows Phone 7 represents Microsoft's major push into consumer mobiles – with the company desperate to get back on track with a completely redesigned mobile OS. </P><br /><P>Word on actual sales had been thin on the ground until Achim Berg, Microsoft's vice president of business and marketing for Windows Phones, gave out the information. </P><br /><P>"We are pleased that phone manufacturers sold over 1.5 million phones in the first six weeks, which helps build customer momentum and retail presence," said Berg. </P><br /><P><STRONG>Sales ramping well</STRONG></P><br /><P>"Sales are ramping well as our reputation is growing for offering users a unique experience and are in line with our expectations – especially when compared to other new platform introductions, he commented. </P><br /><P>"With a new platform you have to look at a couple of things, first of all customer satisfaction. As I mentioned before, we've seen great response on the complete mobile phone experience.</P><br /><P>"Another is phone manufacturer sales – phones being bought and stocked by mobile operators and retailers on their way to customers."</P><br /><P>Berg is aware that Microsoft has a tough task in competing with the likes of Google and Apple but insists that the company is 'in the race'. </P><br /><P>"We know we have tough competition, and this is a completely new product. We're in the race – it's not a sprint but we are certainly gaining momentum and we're in it for the long run."</P>

If you're not familiar with that site, it's where you can send your pet project up the proverbial flagpole and see if anyone salutes it with a pledge of funding.</P><br /><P>Apparently MINIMAL founder and designer Scott Wilson has captured some attention with his TikTok and LunaTik iPod nano watch kits, since he raised US$941,558 in funding on Kickstarter. Considering he needed a mere $15,000 to go into production, this would be a case of overkill. Wilson's stated goal is to hopefully get these kits into Apple Stores, and with the publicity he's garnered through this highly-successful funding round, he may just get his wish.</P><br /><P>For the time being, you can now pre-order the kits (iPod nano not included). The TikTok will sell for $34.95, while the snazzier LunaTik will pull down a cool $69.95. If you were one of the backers of the project, you'll be getting a significant discount. <img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//classifications/Mobile%20Phones/BlackBerry/curve3g_silver-200-200.jpg"><br /><P>BlackBerry maker RIM has announced record revenue and earnings for the third quarter of 2011, as well as record shipments of handsets. </P><br /><P>RIM has been mounting a challenge to the smartphone consumer market with its BlackBerry range of late after becoming a dominant figure in business, and will feel that the latest figures represents a significant step. </P><br /><P>With the BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet poised to arrive next year, RIM's growth was fuelled by the BlackBerry Style 9670 (although not in Europe) and the BlackBerry Bold 9780, along with the continued roll out of the BlackBerry Torch and Blackberry Curve 3G. </P><br /><P><STRONG>14.2 million</STRONG></P><br /><P>That boosted the all-important shipments figure from 14.2 million from last year's Q3 total of 10.1 million. </P><br /><P>Revenue was $5.49 billion (c£3.51bn), up 40 per cent year on year – compared to $3.92 billion in Q3 2009. </P><br /><P>The company also revealed it is expecting to sell 14.5 to 15 billion devices in the current quarter which ends in February.</P>

A Potential of 20 Million Hackers Each Using Technology Worth Barely 500 Dollars Considered

<P>Thankfully, the United States government and the United States military is finally getting serious about Cyberwarfare, and the potential of serious threats to our economic infrastructure due to hackers, and foreign militaries attacking our systems. Yes, it is a real threat, one we have to deal with, and it doesn't help that our government continually awards contracts to software providers for patchwork.</P><br /><P>There are too many people in the know, who understand the code behind all these programs, and far too many coded programs working together in conjunction to make the entire system work, or in many cases not work at all. And the question is how do you fight a bunch of hackers who have very little money invested, and are maybe doing their hacking from a cybercafe somewhere in China?</P><br /><P>If you think proxy terrorism is bad, consider a nation-state which is covertly funding groups of hackers in Eastern Europe, or patriotic hackers in China. It gets pretty serious pretty quick, and unfortunately our systems are vulnerable, and they have been attacked incessantly.</P><br /><P>In a recent Lexington "Think Tank" Institute article by Loren Thompson PhD entitled; "What Force Multiplier? US Military Losing Cost-Exchange Advantage in Combat" which was published in October of 2010 brought up a very good point. Dr. Thompson in this paper stated;</P><br /><P>"The U.S. is spending a billion dollars per month to protect its military and intelligence networks against penetration by overseas spies and hackers. The amount of money our enemies are putting into circumventing these protections is probably a very small fraction of that amount, and the cost of developing kinetic or non-kinetic means for disabling U.S. networks is quite modest."</P><br /><P>The cyber threat is real, and we've already been jeopardized by hackers, and our allies have been subject to cyber attacks from foreign militaries. Of course, there is also an offensive capability to this, in that we noted that Iran was attacked by someone, no one knows who, and everyone has denied the attack - nevertheless, it prevented their nuclear power plant from starting up. And this thought is rather scary, because all of our infrastructure in the US, as most of it runs on some sort of computer system.</P><br /><P>We had better get our systems ready to combat cyber attacks, and hackers from destroying our world as we know it. Please consider all this, because if we don't do something, we are all in trouble.</P>

<img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//classifications/computing/mobile-computing/Tablets%20and%20touchscreens/Sharp-Galapagos-Android-Tablet-200-200.jpg"><br /><P>Sharp believes that it can sell one million Galapagos tablets, but don't hold your breath for any UK availability. </P><br /><P>Galapagos represents Sharp's big push into content delivery plus hardware, with a host of devices planned starting with the eagerly awaited tablet and, of course, 3D mobile phones. </P><br /><P>There are, as yet, no plans to bring Galapagos to the UK, but it is an indication of the size of Sharp that it believes it can take on the likes of Korean giant Samsung and, of course, Apple. </P><br /><P><STRONG>Android</STRONG></P><br /><P>The Galapagos tablet will bring the now-familiar Android operating system, and will be available in both a 10.8-inch version and a Streak-like 5.5 inch size which is akin to an oversized smartphone.</P><br /><P>Price wise, the 10.8-inch model will apparently be somewhere around the £500 mark with the smaller version considerably less. </P><br /><P>The tablet will reportedly not allow users to install their own software, but will run Sharp's own e-reader software and media player. </P><br /><P>Sharp is hoping a tie-up with a major Japanese content owner will give them the lead in its home market, and has targeted one million sales for the tablet. </P><br /><P>Whether that eventually leads to a global launch remains to be seen.</P>

<img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//classifications/computing/mobile-computing/MSIXSlimX340-200-200.jpg"><br /><P>Microsoft has suggested that there are a whopping 30 million PCs and laptops lying unused around the UK, suggesting we should use the old machines to get more people online. </P><br /><P>Backing Marth Lane-Fox's vision of a Networked Nation and as part of the not-very-snappily-named GO ON: Give Someone Their First Time Online campaign (<a href="https://extranet.futurenet.com/+CSCO+1075676763663A2F2F6A726F7A6E76792E68782E7368676865726172672E70627A++/owa/-CSCO-3h--redir.aspx?C=1734d5d577a04a65961e698634e426cd&URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.get-someone-online.com">www.get-someone-online.com</A>) Microsoft's research suggested some interesting trends. </P><br /><P>Apparently, some 30 per cent of us have a PC or laptop at home they no longer use, 15 per cent have two unused machines and 9 per cent three or more. </P><br /><P>This has led to the 30 million number being suggested, and those machines could be put to better use – according to the campaign. </P><br /><P><STRONG>"Live" offline...pah!</STRONG></P><br /><P>Nickie Smith, Marketing Director, Microsoft Advertising, said; "Working in the digital media industry it's very easy to forget that millions of people in the UK do live offline, and have no way of accessing the many benefits that the internet offers. </P><br /><P>"With nearly one in ten (8 per cent) people in the UK planning to buy a new PC or laptop this Christmas, there is a real opportunity for people to do some good by donating their old machines to help someone else."</P><br /><P>Martha Lane Fox added, "The 'Go On Give Someone Their First Time Online' campaign is a great opportunity for the millions of internet users in the UK to give the 9.2 million people a chance to enjoy the benefits that so many of us enjoy every day. </P><br /><P>"If every connected person helped just one friend or family member to get online, the race would already be won. </P><br /><P>"By working together we can accelerate progress towards building a more networked UK."</P>

<img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//classifications/images/kinfinal-200-200.jpg"><br /><P>Microsoft has sold a million Kinect motion control kits for the Xbox 360 after only ten days on sale.</P><br /><P>The game console and computing giant announced the milestone on its <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/Presspass/press/2010/nov10/11-15NineMillionPR.mspx">own website this week.</A></P><br /><P><STRONG>Target of 5 million </STRONG></P><br /><P>The plan is to sell a whopping 5 million units by the end of 2010, with Kinect looking set to be the 'must-have' toy for both hardcore and casual gamers this coming Christmas.</P><br /><P>Microsoft recently announced that the next <EM>Star Wars</EM> and <EM>Forza</EM> games due for release later in 2011 will both be fully Kinect-compatible, giving hope to the legions of hardcore gamers who have to date been unimpressed with the launch line-up of games for the new motion-control tech. </P><br /><P>Microsoft's head of interactive entertainment, Don Mattrick, has this to say about the Kinect sales to date:</P><br /><P>"We are appreciative of the response we have seen from consumers that has culminated in sales of more than 1m units in the first 10 days on the market for Kinect for Xbox 360. </P><br /><P>"This is a great start to the holiday season, and we will continue to work with our retailer partners to keep pace with high demand and deliver against our plan to sell more than 5m Kinect sensors worldwide by the end of this year."</P><br /><P>Kinect is available now at a standalone price of £130.</P>

<img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//classifications/images/skyfire-200-200.jpg"><br /><P>SkyFire, the app that lets iPhone users view Flash video on their phones, has managed to generate a cool $1 million in its first weekend on sale.</P><br /><P>The SkyFire app for iPhone costs $2.99 in the US and yet is still not officially available on the UK iTunes Store.</P><br /><P><STRONG>How to make a quick million bucks</STRONG></P><br /><P>However, reports from the jailbreak scene indicate that there are plenty of British users with jailbroken iPhones already happily using the Flash app.</P><br /><P>SkyFire is available for free on all other smartphone platforms, but that is clearly because those platforms already offer Flash video support, unlike Apple's iPhone.</P><br /><P>The company told MobileCrunch that its download numbers for their first weekend on the US iTunes store were 2well over 300,000." </P><br /><P>After Apple takes its 30 per cent cut, this means that SkyFire walked about with somewhere between $600,000 to $700,000.</P><br /><P>Not bad for a weekend's work!</P><br /><P>The iPhone app has suffered a few teething troubles in its first few weeks on sale, with SkyFire putting this down to the huge demand for Flash on iPhone from its customers.</P>

Samsung: Galaxy Tab to hit one million sales 'this year'
