No wait, not Mario, Roboto! Once you play the game you’ll see why I confused this game with the original Mario Brothers, it being a side-scrolling action game with no compare. The only other game I’ve played with this much awesome side-scrolling action is indeed the original Mario Brothers or Mario 3, and this one, Roboto, as developed by Fenix Fire and having no affiliation with Nintendo at all, has a blaster pistol all game long and awesome gravity-flip features to keep you on your toes! Dive in with me, won’t you? Let’s have a look.

As you start the game for the first time, you’ll see some rather impressive looking cinema tics blast forth from your display, a video showing Roboto seeing a lovely lady robot who he of course falls instantly in love with. Of course she, being the robot mince she is, runs to a rocket and instantly takes off into outer space. What does Roboto do? He chases her of course! Thus begins your journey through 30 “galvanizing” levels, as they say, facing off against robot enemies galore as you surf in on your hoverboard as Roboto, the coolest little robot this side of Android!

There’s a bunch of oddities to look forward to as well. There are puzzles in many levels, making you move in exacting ways and blasting your pistol just so precisely so as to continue on. That is, until you get upgrades. There’s 5 different “super-powered” weapons you can attain through the game, as well as a Power Up System that’ll boost your rocket boarding abilities and toughen your armor. They call it a rocket board but everyone knows its a Hoverboard, let’s be honest.

There are bosses of magnificent stature, an awesome soundtrack of pop punk music playing in the background, and of course OpenFeint support as well. You can grab the game today on the Android Market for $2.99, this price lasting until August 8th when the price will go up to $4.99 – get it!

ALSO note that we’re looking at this game on the brand new Motorola DROID 3 from Verizon, reviewed in full by yours on July 28, 2011!

Cambridge professor creates creepy, emotion-sensing GPS system

Meet Charles: the robotic GPS system that can tell when you've got road rage. Yes, he's a tad scary looking, but according to the Cambridge professor who created him, you won't feel like throwing him out the window when you're frustrated. The disembodied satnav robot (head and torso only), which sits in the passengers seat, is designed to respond to a driver's emotional cues, like facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice. Charles takes this information and responds accordingly, providing sympathetic phrases when he senses frustration. Researchers say the robot is about 70 percent accurate at detecting emotion, or about as accurate as any human. We say a backseat driver that can't hit back is 100 percent awesome.
Kinect Mated to a Gesture Control Robot

It's raining sight capable robots ever since Microsoft's Kinect motion controller went open source. Willow Garage, a team of researchers and robotics experts, has paired Xbox 360's Kinect with a robot that is capable of gesture control. The team behind the robot is well known for developing their own open source Robot Operating System (ROS), which has gained popularity among robotics experts.

Its line of PR2 robots have also been used for robotics research. The team has successfully mated Kinect with their PR2 robotics system and ROS for a gesture controlled robot interface. The video released by Willow Garage looks impressive, and holds great promise in engineering, defence and other civilian applications. With enough improvement, such a system may provide enough precision to perform remote medical procedures, explosive detonation and mine sweeping, and other implementations where robotic interfaces could be successfully paired with precise human control.

Kinect Equips Robot with Spatial Awareness

Adafruit's recent success in bringing the Xbox 360 motion controller Kinect to the open source community has opened up a host of possibilities for researchers with limited funding. In the latest string of Kinect enabled research showcases, MIT researcher Philipp Robbel has mated the Kinect sensor with the iRobot Create Robot kit.

Robbel's creation gets spatial awareness, thanks to the Kinect, letting it analyze and build real time reconstruction of its surroundings for what can be called true sight. It can then use its inbuilt wireless communication module to remotely send data back to the host computer. One can spot a host of engineering, military and research possibilities for a relatively inexpensive robot with these features.

The robot is also capable of recognizing human gestures, so it can be controlled on field, by multiple persons without the need for separate controllers. Robbel's research intends to build a team of robots working cooperatively in search and rescue missions. The original idea is to allow the robot to rescue humans and then follow their leads (using Kinect's human detection capabilities) to get to others.

Robbel's KinectBot is far from a complete product; it's more of a proof of concept, pending further tests of its 3D imaging capabilities. However, if and when it does make the cut, this just might be the first proper implementation of the Kinect system in a serious engineering product.

Robots thus far have mostly been relying on radars, lasers and ultrasonic devices paired to simple algorithms for navigation. Anything fancy involving camera based imaging has required massive complexity, which hasn't been feasible for most robotic research projects. This limitation has been a major hindrance to developing prototypes with true spatial awareness, which has always been the prerogative of high budget military and space research projects.
