UPDATE: It seems it won't be all users that will be getting an update instantly - some may have to wait weeks, according to this hot-off-the-press forum post from T-Mobile: "As you will have seen HTC have announced that Android 2.2 will begin rolling out for the HTC Wildfire this week. We are pleased to confirm that customers with T-Mobile branded handsets will be receiving this update at the same time. "As with all HTC updates this will be a phased release over the coming weeks and you will receive an alert on your handset when it is ready to update." HTC only announced the new update would be available yesterday, and almost instantly Vodafone announced it was available to its users. T-Mobile joining the party means it leaves Three as the only network in the UK that hasn't confirmed its Wildfire customers will be getting the Android 2.2 upgrade. Flash Lite: better than nothing The new update brings elements like Wi-Fi hotspots, improved performance and camera tweaks to the HTC Wildfire, but Live Wallpaper and Flash 10.1 are not included due to hardware limitations. However Flash Lite is being offered as a pseudo-substitute, so a fair few videos and animations should play to enhance websites. T-Mobile recently angered a number of its users with the promise of an Android 2.2 update for its Samsung Galaxy S, only to delay it over a week, so it's good news this upgrade is coming within 24 hours of the original announcement from HTC.

Outside of the Nexus One (and recently-launched Nexus S, of course), T-Mobile's G2 is about as close as one can get to stock build of Android. 'Course, it's now a point release behind Gingerbread, but we're hoping that'll be remedied in short order. Outside of that, we're curious to know how you'd change the slip-sliding Android phone if given the schematics and the ability to start over from scratch. By and large, we felt that HTC nailed the design, but of course, everyone's capable of seeing things in a slightly different light.

The network originally promised the update would land by 1 December at the latest, but failed to meet that deadline, later confirming it would happen next week. TechRadar asked T-Mobile for a reason behind this delay, and received the following: "T-Mobile apologises for any inconvenience caused by the delay in 2.2 Froyo update for the <a href="http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/samsung-galaxy-s-689293/review">Samsung Galaxy S</A>. "It is our priority to ensure that the update will provide our customers with the best possible experience and we are working hard to make this happen as soon as possible." Lifting the lid T-Mobile couldn't comment on a reason for the delay, but reading between the pretty wide lines it's clear the Galaxy S upgrade failed some part of the testing process at the last moment. The problem here wasn't that the upgrade has taken so long to deploy (although it has irked customers) but a missed self-imposed deadline meant that users were constantly checking for something that never arrived. We hope the Android 2.2 update lands by next Friday from T-Mobile, which we're assured it will, and we don't have to talk about this until Android 2.3 Gingerbread lands...

"Our handset team have been working closely with Samsung regarding this update and future updates and would like to share their news with you. Smooth installation "Our goal is to make the update process smoother and we are working to become the only mobile operator offering FOTA (Firmware over the Air) updates for the Samsung product range. "The aim was and still is to have the FOTA update available at some point today. If for reasons outwith our control we are unable to have a FOTA update process fully functioning by close of play today, then we will make the update available for download via Samsung KIES." We're still waiting to hear word of whether this has actually happened for anyone as yet, with Twitter still quiet on the subject, so perhaps the over the air issues are slowing things down. The Galaxy S update is more pivotal as it will likely include fixes to the phone's operation, which include slowdown on certain applications opening, which can become very frustrating for users.

Currently, if users want to buy Apple's tablet and use it wherever they like, the only option is the iPad 3G, which involves a hefty payment to buy the device then more money per month to your favourite network for data. So the statements leave us in the dark over UK pricing, but if compared to the <a href="http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/apple-iphone-4-694980/review">iPhone 4</A>, it seems likely you'll be able to pick one up for around £150-£200 on a £35-£30 per month, two-year deal - although the fact there won't be minutes or texts involved may alter that price slightly.

Affordable "The successful Vairy Touch series offered an affordable touchscreen user experience for T-Mobile customers," said Nicola Shenton, head of handset and device marketing at T-Mobile UK.
