<div class="ex"><p align="center"><img alt="New iPad Mini release date, news and rumours" src="http://www.new-technology-news.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/iPad_Mini.jpeg"></p><p>The new iPad has been and gone, sporting a chunkier and heavier build than the iPad 2, which left some wondering: what’s with all the extra weight?</p><p>However, it looks like Apple may be about to aid those conscious of extra grams in their bags, as rumours hot up about a potential iPad mini (or iPad nano, if you prefer) arriving later this year.</p><p>As the Amazon Kindle Fire steals the budget tablet show and with more small, cheap tablets on the horizon, such as the Google Nexus tablet, Apple may well want a bite of the, well, apple.</p><p>Back in 2010, former Apple CEO Steve Jobs said that smaller screened tablets were not “sufficient to create great tablet apps” and would be “dead on arrival”, so rumours suggesting a new iPad mini is in the works reveals a potentially new direction for the firm in its post-Jobs era.</p><p>Believe it or not, there’s certainly a lot of chat surrounding the iPad mini, so we’ve scooped it all up, mushed it all together and expelled it into a handy round up, allowing you to keep track of every twist and turn.</p><h4><strong>New iPad mini release date</strong></h4><p>There’s not even an official sign from Apple that the iPad mini/iPad nano is even in the works, so a release date for the tablet is even more up in the air.</p><p>Although if the rumours turn out to be true, we can expect Apple to start rolling out the iPad mini very soon after a extraordinarily over-hyped launch event.</p><p>According to a <em>Digitimes</em> source the iPad nano could start production in the third quarter of 2012.</p><p>Analyst Shaw Wu says the “exact timing” for an iPad mini release date “is difficult to predict”, but said its launch is a “question of when, not if.” Pretty confident then, are we, Shaw?</p><p>A report straight out of China suggests that key Apple manufactures Foxconn and Pegatron have started to receive orders for the new iPad mini. It goes on to say the factories will have 6 million units ready for a launch in Q3 of 2012.</p><p>Apple has announced its annual WWDC event running from June 11-15, which sold out in just two hours, and there’s a chance we could see the Cupertino firm announce the iPad mini there, possibly alongside the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 – but then again, we could also see Apple launch a new ice cream factory, such is the chances of all three of those happening.</p><h4><strong>New iPad mini price</strong></h4><p>Apple is known for its extravagant products, launch events and pricing policies, however the iPad mini may herald a new era for those who long for an Apple device, but simply can’t part with an arm and a leg to buy one.</p><p>It’s thought that Apple’s idea behind the iPad nano is to tackle the budget end of the which, where the Amazon Kindle Fire is currently king, and a <em>Digitimes</em> source predicts it could land with a very reasonable sub £200 ($249-$299) price tag.</p><h4><strong>New iPad mini display</strong></h4><p>As the name suggests, we’re looking at an iPad which will be sporting a screen smaller than the stock 9.7-inch display found on the first three Apple tablets.</p><p>In February we saw a report from the <em>Wall Street Journal</em> claiming a source from an Apple component supplier had confirmed it was testing a smaller screen for Apple, in the region of 8-inches with a similar resolution to the iPad 2.</p><p>At the start of March, <em>Digitimes</em> reported that the new iPad mini would actually come with a 7.85-inch display – a tad bigger than the 7-inch screen found on the Kindle Fire.</p><p>April saw Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu reveal that Apple had been testing devices with screens ranging from 4 to 12-inches and highlighted that the 7.85-inch format would be most likely “when, not if” the iPad mini is launched.</p><p>Wu also predicted the iPad nano would sport the same resolution as the original iPad and iPad 2, at 1,024 x 768 – meaning developers wouldn’t have to tweak their apps.</p><h4><strong>New iPad mini early verdict</strong></h4><p>Well, we’re still unsure whether Apple will go down the iPad mini route. Budget Sony Xperia ST21i Android 4.0 device leaks

<div class="ex"><p align="center"><img alt="iPhone more valuable to Nokia than Lumia range" src="http://www.new-technology-news.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/nokia-lumia-900-470-75.jpg"></p><p>It’s been revealed that Nokia makes more money from licensing its patents to Apple for use in the iPhone range, than it does from selling its own Lumia handsets.</p><p>Nokia has recently released its figures for the last quarter and they don’t make for happy reading. The Finnish manufacturer made a loss on its mobile device sales, even after launching new handsets including the Lumia 900.</p><p>It’s been a rough year for Nokia, as it took a gamble going down the Windows Phone route and it’s yet to see decent sales figures for its launch handsets the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710.</p><h4><strong>All hope is not lost</strong></h4><p>However it’s not all doom and gloom over in Finland. The iPhone 4S boasts the same dual-core processor as the iPad 2 – the Apple A5 which is based on the ARM Cortex-A9 microarchitecture. Apple says it has twice the speed of the Apple A4 chip in the iPhone 4. The 3GS had an ARM Cortex A8-based processor running at 600MHz.</div>

The iPhone 4 is still available at capacities of 16 and 32GB, but the 4S ups the ante here with a 64GB model. As of summer 2010 the iPhone 3GS regressed – from being available with 16 and 32GB, models produced from then on had just 8GB of memory, as befitting the budget handset of the range.</div>

iPhone 4S uses the same chassis as the iPhone 4 - 24 per cent thinner than the iPhone 3GS at 9.3mm instead of 12.3mm. It's also ever so slightly wider by 3.5mm. In terms of weight, the 140g 4S is slightly heavier than the 137g iPhone 4, which in turn is slightly heavier than the 135g iPhone 3GS.</div>

Both the 3GS and iPhone 4 support basic voice control, but the 4S ups the ante with Siri, a voice assistant that means you can compose messages, set reminders and ask questions. You can also dictate to your handset. We're not sure how useful it would be, but we'd love to try it out. Sadly it's not part of the iOS 5 update for the older handsets.</div>

The iPhone 4 was quite limited in its photography. Still, against the 3GS it seemed positively brilliant, with 5 megapixels instead of 3 megapixels and the addition of an LED flash (which can also be used for the video) as well as a front-facing cam for video chat. Apple would like to think you would use FaceTime for this, but who does? However, Apple knew the camera was becoming a really weak point of the iPhone line, so it has given it some serious beefing up in the latest model.</div>

There's a five element lens in the 4S instead of the four element in the 4, face detection and an 8-megapixel sensor. There's 60 per cent more pixels, a larger f/2.4 aperture and an advanced hybrid IR filter that produces sharper and brighter images. The Camera app has also been improved and the shot to shot capability is twice as fast according to Apple.</div>

In terms of Wi-Fi, iPhone 4S and 4 have 802.11n Wi-Fi, while the 3GS is stuck with the older 802.11b and g standards. This won't matter unless you connect it to an 802.11n router, of course. iPhone 4S has an upgraded version of Bluetooth – 4.0 instead of 2.1 in the other handsets. The 4S also boasts both GSM and CDMA capability, meaning it can be used on virtually any network across the globe. Data speeds have also been improved in the new handset, with 14.4Mbps downloads now possible.</div>

Standby time is a cited 300 hours for the iPhone 4 and 3GS but strangely this is 100 hours more than the 4S. Is Apple being more realistic, or is it due to the notification strain in iOS 5?</div>

Nokia unveils new budget C2 and X2

<img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//classifications/Mobile%20Phones/Nokia/Nokia-C3-01-200-200.jpg"><br /><P>Nokia has announced a couple of new additions to its budget range: the C2-01 and the X2-01, both running Symbian S40.</P><br /><P>Unless you're desperate for a full QWERTY keyboard, the C2 is clearly the better of the two, with 3G connectivity, an FM radio, Bluetooth and 12 button standard keyboard below a two inch screen.</P><br /><P>It also comes with a 3.2MP camera on the back, as well as up to 16GB of onboard storage - all for around €70 (£60).</P><br /><P><STRONG>X appeal</STRONG></P><br /><P>The X2 eschews the 3G and FM radio, and instead goes on the social networking tip, with Nokia's 'Communities' on board, as well as a landscape-centric 2.4-inch display. </P><br /><P>However, despite only offering up GPRS/EDGE connectivity, the price is still higher than the C2 at roughly £65.</P><br /><P>And finally, the Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type is finally shipping to the UK, which is essentially a lot like the C2, but with a much higher spec list: HSDPA connectivity, a 5MP camera with single LED flash and up to 32GB of memory.</P><br /><P>It's also packing S60 for an operating system, so it can access the shiny and exciting work of the Nokia Ovi Store too.</P><br /><P>However, it's not going to be cheap: a premium full metal chassis has hiked the cost of £160 SIM free.</P><br /><P>The Nokia X2 is set to debut later this year, with the C2 set for a Q1 2011 UK release date.</P>
