iPhone more valuable to Nokia than Lumia range

<div class="ex"><p align="center"><img alt="iPhone more valuable to Nokia than Lumia range" src="http://www.new-technology-news.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/nokia-lumia-900-470-75.jpg"></p><p>It’s been revealed that Nokia makes more money from licensing its patents to Apple for use in the iPhone range, than it does from selling its own Lumia handsets.</p><p>Nokia has recently released its figures for the last quarter and they don’t make for happy reading. The Finnish manufacturer made a loss on its mobile device sales, even after launching new handsets including the Lumia 900.</p><p>It’s been a rough year for Nokia, as it took a gamble going down the Windows Phone route and it’s yet to see decent sales figures for its launch handsets the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710.</p><h4><strong>All hope is not lost</strong></h4><p>However it’s not all doom and gloom over in Finland. HTC shares took a tumble after a US court ruled that it has infringed two Apple patents earlier this month, which is quite possibly what has prompted this sudden urge to meet with Apple.</div>

No doubt HTC is keen to avoid paying out too many patent royalties to Apple – it already pays Microsoft a per handset fee due to its use of patents owned by Ballmer and co.</div>

A few weeks ago, HTC also bolstered its patent portfolio by snapping up S3 Graphics Co, thus buying up patents that Apple was recently found to have infringed.</div>

But one exciting thing about the new project is how cool and smooth it looks, and TechCrunch has noted the reason for that look, based on Steven Levy's reporting: it's designed in part by Andy Hertzfeld, one of the members of the original Macintosh team back in the 1980s.<br/><br/>Hertzfeld now works for Google, and supposedly he was let free to exercise his creative influence as he liked on the new Google+ system, creating something for the folks in Mountain View that looks like it might have come from the early days of the Cupertino company.<br/><br/>Hertzfeld even credits some of his influence at Google to Apple's own resurgence lately, saying that Apple's sky-high relevance in the tech and mobile industry may have "had a little bit to do" with his chance to help create Google+.<br/><br/>In other words, when you finally get one of those invites that are starting to float around, and finally log in to the system to see what it is and what it's like, take note of any Macintosh-related influences you might see. Odds are, they're Mr. Hertzfeld's work.

Apple set to double size of Cupertino HQ

<img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//classifications/computing/mac/images/apple-logo-grey-fair-dealing-200-200.jpg"><br /><P>Apple has purchased just under 100 acres of land next-door to its HQ in Cupertino, with the company set to double the size of its home base in the near future.</P><br /><P>Apple has bought the Cupertino campus of competing computing firm Hewlett-Packard, with HP moving out of the site in order to consolidate its operations around its Palo Alto headquarters.</P><br /><P><STRONG>Spectacular growth</STRONG></P><br /><P>Apple recently reported a whopping $65 billion in sales and added 12,300 employees to its global work force of 46,600. </P><br /><P>Tim Bajarin, president of consultants Creative Strategies said: "They've just had spectacular growth. They are one of the companies in the valley that are hiring, and the bottom line is they need the space."</P><br /><P>Cupertino Mayor Kris Wang said of Apple's latest expansion plans: "We're very proud to have Apple's headquarters in our city. It's not just a company. It's the company." </P><br /><P>Local estate agents said HP's asking price may have been in the region of $300 million.</P><br /><P>"We now occupy 57 buildings in Cupertino and our campus is bursting at the seams," said Apple's Steve Dowling, confirming the latest expansion plans. </P><br /><P>"These offices will give us more space for our employees as we continue to grow."</P><br /><P>Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak moved Apple's HQ to Cupertino way back in 1977, after starting the company in Jobs' parents' garage in 1976.</P>
