Sony set to double image sensor production

Sony is set to double its output of image sensors in 2011, investing a cool $1.2 billion in a planned expansion next year. Sony clearly expects the demand for smartphone cameras and digital cameras and camcorders to continue to grow rapidly throughout 2011. Japanese government subsidies Sony Corp's internal investment of $1.2 billion in image sensors also includes a deal to buy back a semiconductor production line from Toshiba Corp, costing around $600 million. Sony will make use of part of the factory in Nagasaki, southern Japan, for the production of CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) sensors and the development of new wafer processing equipment for CMOS image sensors. The consumer electronics giant will make use of Japanese government subsidies to assist environmentally friendly businesses. However, it is not yet clear exactly how much money Sony will receive from the Japanese government for its planned expansion. Sony clearly has ambitions to catch-up with and overtake digital camera market leader Canon, with the objective to quickly ramp up total production of image sensors, including CCD and CMOS sensors, to 50,000 units a month by March 2012. Source

Apple set to double size of Cupertino HQ

Apple has purchased just under 100 acres of land next-door to its HQ in Cupertino, with the company set to double the size of its home base in the near future. Apple has bought the Cupertino campus of competing computing firm Hewlett-Packard, with HP moving out of the site in order to consolidate its operations around its Palo Alto headquarters. Spectacular growth Apple recently reported a whopping $65 billion in sales and added 12,300 employees to its global work force of 46,600. Tim Bajarin, president of consultants Creative Strategies said: "They've just had spectacular growth. They are one of the companies in the valley that are hiring, and the bottom line is they need the space." Cupertino Mayor Kris Wang said of Apple's latest expansion plans: "We're very proud to have Apple's headquarters in our city. It's not just a company. It's the company." Local estate agents said HP's asking price may have been in the region of $300 million. "We now occupy 57 buildings in Cupertino and our campus is bursting at the seams," said Apple's Steve Dowling, confirming the latest expansion plans. "These offices will give us more space for our employees as we continue to grow." Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak moved Apple's HQ to Cupertino way back in 1977, after starting the company in Jobs' parents' garage in 1976.

Android Phones to Double Up as Credit Cards

We'd dreamt of a day when our cell phones will become our credit cards. That day doesn't seem like some far-fetched futuristic concept now, with Google's Eric Schmidt working towards the same. At the Web 2.0 Summit, he said that the upcoming Android 2.3 (or Gingerbread) mobile operating system will support a technology called Near Field Communication (NFC). NFC is a short-range, high frequency wireless technology that can swap data from two devices kept at most 4-inches apart. It works in a similar 'contactless' way that our office access cards or the smart-cards used by many public transport systems do. Now the idea is to embed these NFC chips into cell-phones. There are only a few handful phones as of today that have this chip. But Android 2.3's compatibility with them gives hardware manufacturers a good reason to put one of these in their next Android phones. They could replace your credit cards while making payments at shops or restaurants. But Google has no plans to get their hands dirty into making specialized mobile payment software themselves. Eric said they'd rather partner with traditional credit card players (like a VISA or Mastercard). A visual cue to how mobile phone payments would work This is yet another innovation that is putting away yet another ubiquitous object (the credit card) out of use. But the switch would only be wide-spread once all the business operators have machines that support accepting payments via an NFC-enabled mobile phone

Xbox 360 sales double following Kinect launch

It looks like Kinect is successfully attracting new and casual gamers, if recent Xbox 360 console sales are anything to go by. Sales of the Xbox 360 console have doubled since the launch of Microsoft's new motion-control tech earlier this month. Microsoft has already sold well over a million Kinects and hopes to hit five million Kinect sales by the end of 2010. Xbox Black Ops UK Chart-Track figures, corroborated by trade mag MCV, show that Microsoft's console experienced a massive boost in sales over the last week, following the arrival of Kinect on 10 November. Xbox 360 sales have also, no doubt, been boosted by the arrival of Activision's latest blockbuster in the shape of Call of Duty: Black Ops The Xbox 360 version of Black Ops accounts for around 55 per cent of all copies sold to date.

Be Broadband's Line Bonding 'could double speed'

Be Broadband has announced what it is describing as a 'pioneering' line bonding service which could boost customers' broadband speeds up to 44Mbps download and 5Mbps upload. The UK ISP believes that the line bonding technology could mean that those people within 1KM of the exchange could find their rate boosted from around 20Mbps right up to more than 40Mbps. Alex Gowar, Head of Marketing for Be Broadband, said: "As only half of the UK population have access to fibre currently, Be's Line Bonding product is a real viable alternative. "Life-changing" "But Line Bonding is not only great for Be customers who want fibre speeds, but it could also be life changing for the millions of UK customers who suffer slower speeds because they live a long way from the exchange. "It's all part of our 'Real World Speed' proposition and our desire to help customers achieve the fastest speeds possible that their line can handle." There is a catch, however, and that is the price - monthly rental for the line bonding service is £65 per month plus setup costs £85 and you will need two phone lines coming into their building from the same exchange.

Double Glazing Specifications

<a double="" money="" save="" title="#jsArticleStepImageCredit1 rel=thinbox><IMG title=" with=""> windows image by berean from <A" href="http://www.fotolia.com/">Fotolia.com Save money with double glazing.Double glazing refers to window installations where there are two panes of glass instead of one. Double glazing reduces heat loss and helps keep your house warmer while using less energy. The extra pane also reduces noise transmission. As this is a time- and money-intensive procedure, you need to consider many factors. Learn about some of the specifications, recommendations and information involved with double glazing.BenefitsDouble glazing works in two ways: the extra window pane reflects the heat back into the room instead of allowing it to escape. This traps the solar energy better to heat the room naturally. GlazingInfo.com estimates that by using the most efficient glass insulation, a household can save over $14,000 over a 20-year period. As energy costs rise, the amount saved could increase. In the summer, when you don't need heating, the extra pane works in your favor by acting as a barrier against heat loss through heat-conducive glass. The CavityThe cavity between the window is not simply empty space. It plays a vital role in the double glazing system. The space between the window is sealed using a special procedure that uses both primary and secondary seals. The space is filled with dehydrated air or inert gas. Gases like argon, xenon, krypton have a much lower thermal conductivity than air. The energy efficiency increases even further as the gas between the windows acts as an additional energy barrier.Choosing WindowsYou have several options for which kind of glass you choose. Several other factors work to your favor. Glass used in double glazing installations is known as Low E, meaning it is low-emissivity glass. Within the Low E category, the glass is rated on a scale from A to G, with A being the most energy efficient and E being the least. Another factor, U rating of the glass, measures the ability of the glass to transfer heat well. Glass with the lowest U rating is the most efficient in trapping heat inside the house and not transferring heat through the glass.
