Computer Security - Threats and Solutions

When it comes to computer security, many of us live in a bubble of blissful ignorance. We might be vigilant and never open email attachments from people we don't know, we might take care to make sure an ecommerce site is secure before entering our credit card information, or we might even go so far as to install a standard firewall on our computers. Unfortunately, much of the common sense advice we follow when it comes to Internet security does little to combat the cyber-crime that is rampant.Federal Trade CommissionEven the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, a governmental agency that is designed to help consumers, had to issue a press release stating that "consumers, including corporate and banking executives, appear to be targets of a bogus e-mail supposedly sent by the Federal Trade Commission but actually sent by third parties hoping to install spyware on computers."There's little doubt that spyware, malware, and insidious virus attacks make any computer with Internet access vulnerable. But, because not all Internet security breaches are immediately apparent, people are often unaware that their seemingly hassle-free computing is anything but. The Federal Trade Commission offers seven guidelines to help consumer surf the Web safely:1. Protect your personal information. For example, when shopping on an ecommerce site, make sure that the page where you enter your personal information is secure, as designated by "https" before the URL. It's important to stop identity theft before it starts.2. Know before you click. For instance, many cyber-criminals impersonate legitimate businesses, or send "phishing" email that asks you to click a hyperlink. Check out online merchants and never click on emailed hyperlinks unless you're certain of the source.3. Update anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall software often. Hackers and others who engage in cyber-crime seem to always be a step ahead of the good guys. If your computer protection is outdated, you're vulnerable.4. Use Web browser and operating system security features. Make sure your browser settings give you optimal privacy and security, and ensure that you update your operating system regularly to take advantage of security patches.5. Safeguard your passwords. For example, create a unique password for each site you visit, and keep them in a secure place. Use letter, number and symbol combinations that can outsmart automated password detection programs.6. Always do backups. If your computer does get a virus or a worm, your files may be goners. Make sure to regularly back up any important files and store them in a secure place.7. Prepare for emergencies. If something does go wrong, such as your computer being hacked or infected, or if you accidentally divulge personal information, know what courses of action you should take to remedy the situation and prevent further problems.A Hassle-Free SolutionProtecting your computer from all of the threats in cyberspace can seem like full-time job. Thankfully, there are companies who make it their business to offer individuals and businesses the most technologically advanced computer security solutions available. The best of these services offer PC maintenance, full system optimization, problem diagnosis and repair, installation assistance, and a full complement of professionally managed security services. Typically, you pay a small monthly subscription fee and in turn can surf the Web knowing that your computer is locked down and that you'll never again have to stay abreast of the latest security software or lug your computer down to a high-priced repair center.

Common Voice Over IP Issues and Possible Solutions

While VoIP today is considered a stable and reliable technology for personal and business communications, there are still a few kinks here and there. Like all new and evolving technologies, there are still pitfalls that VoIP converts may experience at one time or another. Ranging from minor inconveniences such as compatibility issues to major ones such as misrouted calls, users of VoIP have to occasionally deal with problems that are just as if not more disruptive than the problems associated with a regular 'legacy' phone system.Deployment problemsEven before shifting to Internet telephony, a user must check the speed and bandwidth of the current broadband connection to see whether it can handle the added load of a VoIP. Typical business connections pose problems in particular, as the added burden of voice calls (increased data transmissions) may adversely affect operations in the long run. Adding bandwidth and speed with Quality of Service guarantees will likely suffice for most businesses. But for businesses with extensive calling requirements like telemarketing companies, a more exhaustive analysis of traffic volume, peak call usage, maximum concurrent calls and other information is necessary. These are required by the service provider to enable it to anticipate and roll out and/or recommend the bandwidth and speed needed at any given time.Porting PSTN numbers Individuals and businesses often find it necessary to migrate the number that they're using to their new VoIP service. The porting of numbers, called Local Number Portability (LNP), results in seamless transitions to VoIP. The downsides, however, are the complicated process, varying time frame for porting the number, and possibility of rejection due to technicalities. The good thing is that it takes only patience, goodwill and lots of grace to navigate the complicated steps in the migration of numbers, and resolve any rejected request.Security issuesOne stumbling block that keeps many from switching to VoIP is the often unsubstantiated fear of worms, viruses, denial-of-service (DOS) attacks and Internet-related problems. Others are concerned too on how secure VoIP calls are and if these are not prone to hacking. While it's true that voice calls in VoIP are sent as data packets, the possibility of these being corrupted while on transit is quite distant: it has identifiers (headers) that the sending and receiving ends must check, the packets are usually encrypted, and both ends of the call are likely to have first level firewall.More worrisome would be the possibility of voice interception that may result in wiretapping and toll fraud, and data interception that may cause confidential information such as passwords and personal info to fall into malevolent hands. Physical security policies, stricter authentication mechanisms and more stringent security measures like disabling remote access to the graphical are just some of the ways administrators can address security concerns. With the increasing rate in VoIP adoption, issues with broadband telephony will likely taper off as fierce competition fuels research and development in this emerging technology. Eventually, the hesitant attitude that some people have towards VoIP will become a thing of the past. Saiju George is an IP communications and business software expert. 6 Common Mistakes In Finding The Web Hosting Solutions

During our years of business in guiding people to find a reliable and affordable web hosting solutions, we have seen many hosting mistakes people have made in the true-life. Below are the most common 6:1. Spend Too Much Time on Looking for the Lowest PriceIt's not your fault to look for the lowest price of the web hosting. But spending couple days on finding the best one is not something wise. To be honest, the web hosting price has already been very low. let's take small business web hosting as an example, most of them will cost you less than $10 per month. Thinking about the value of your time, instead of spending a lot of time on searching and comparing the price of a web hosting, why not choose one which is affordable for you.Sometimes, you might be able to find a low price hosting from a reseller. But one thing need to keep in mind is that in most case, resellers cannot provide the same level support as what the original web hosting companies can provide due to all kinds of reason such as technology, privilege, etc2. Not Clearly Defining Your RequirementsWhen you choose a web hosting companies, you need to do some homework before making the decision. Many customers just purchase what people recommend without thinking about their own needs. The fact here is that all web hosting plans have their own target market segment, some might be only appropriate for a family web site, some probably work for small business web site. So, when you do your homework, highly recommend you to go through our very popular articles Determine Web Hosting Needs to figure out your web hosting needs. Choosing a wrong web hosting solution will bring you a difficult experience with your web hosting provider even they are very famous.3. Forgiving A Host's Bad Or Limited WebsiteIf the host can't or won't take time to craft an informational site of their own, most likely they won't be too concerned about yours either.4 . Putting All The Eggs In One BasketIf you manage several sites, it seems like a good idea to have everything in one account. You can simplify your billing and get a better deal. Not always. We know of some webmasters who lost hours or work time because they couldn't work on anything since all their sites were down. If your site generates income and they are interconnected, having all sites down at once is bad business.5. Taking Testimonials At Face ValueNot all testimonials are created equal. You need to ask other webmasters, talk to their customers. If they don't list customer names on their site, ask them if you can contact any of their customers or if they'll contact you. If the host refuses, beware.6. Trusting your host to have the latest softwareInternet crime is and viruses are more prevalent than ever. New software or the latest versions are meant to plug security holes. A customer had their site hacked twice in 2 months only to find out the host was not up to date with their software. Check with the host before you order what versions they are running and how often they make updates.Besides the anti-virus software, if your web site need some specific version of programming environment, you will need to check whether your web hosting service provider can provide. New Plans and IT Solutions Implementation

IT solutions are what keeps a business running and only an efficient IT team will ensure the efficiency of the business of an institution. As dynamic as today's market is, one would always have to be prepared to take risks, change clients and adopt new methodologies. This would require the company being able to switch to an equally competent IT solution without much loss of efficiency. Such a competence is possible only with experience and some basic measures, which can ensure the adaptability of new plans and IT solutions.1. Database creation In order to support new support new ideas, we must know what resources are already in possession. Such knowledge would be readily available only when there is sufficient and detailed documentation of the available software and hardware. This could be achieved by the assistance of any IT hire. All that is needed is an initiative.2. Recognizing people An updated business network list is always essential to maintain. It is not very advisable to push off with experimentation here. Phone, website, data services, company hosting email services and all the other services provided any outer service provider. You must take care that you keep agreement documents handy and updated because you would need them in case of any service requirement from the particular provider.3) Backup is a must: Database backup is one of the great missions to be accomplished by making use of the right technology. There could be various doubts about the same as in, the hardware on which it is updated, the software used, and how often the backup is updated and so on.4) Handling the password update process: When a certain employee leaves the company you need to make sure, that you have all the passwords of various software and hardware at the work place. Also access to the passwords and records has to be constantly watched over. A change in support system would need a change in all passwords.5) Disks and Documents: The complete configuration of software and hardware has to be cataloged and stored in a definite area collectively to ensure that there is not loss. License keys, the price and date of purchase and so on have to be systematically maintained here. This helps in network troubleshooting or even the trouble posed in an audit by BSA (Business Software Alliance). Absence of the information may lead to fine and replacement cost.6) Regular Maintenance: For optimizing the standards of performance one has to particularly take care of planned consistent maintenance of Internet Technology systems.7) Supervisory checks from outside: It is always advisable to have an expert from a firm outside to give his neutral ideas and take care of your infrastructure, as they are capable of figuring out flaws which people in the system may fail to. An amount spent in this sector ultimately leads to a lot of savings on the cost you might have to incur n case of any loopholes.8) Considerations of day-today security: The most heard words in security threats would be 'virus, hacker threats, spam' and so on. They are however just the external component of danger. The regular IT-systems are generally at greater threat of hacking from within itself. This would require a careful check of the company's defense and keep a track of all the procedures and rules of the security really well. Net-Centric Wireless Solutions

Net Centric Wireless Technology issues of Bandwidth overloading could possibly be solved with algorithm compression, channel bonding, frequency skipping and frame bursting. The data sets sent with the frame bursting is put into the proper location by the incoming network and the data being sent would be mere raw data in compressed form coming in on three non-overlapping channel waves all the while could be sent via multiple methods and/or skipping of frequencies for additional security. In Frame Bursting, which is relatively a simple concept, this is feasible. For instance the data within the frames would appear in the appropriate places and re-organize itself based on codes within the receiving devices. For instance on an aircraft carrier you do not have a bandwidth issue, but in the way of an infantry unit you do, well at least until Moore’s Law can catch up with the issues of data.Another way to increase bandwidth is thru channel bonding, although with frequency skipping this can be an issue also. Non-overlapping channels can work for increased bandwidth with an algorithm to determine the frequency hops to additional channels in a non-synchronized set of time periods. A combination of frequency skipping and channel bonding could be the answer to security, compressed data and safety of data nodes or motes. As the future unfolds we are seeing a human-computer interface model in all areas of the battlespace especially the ground floor and close air-support. These same computer interfaces will use the biometric components and quantum computing to be molded into the strategy of the system.<a href="http://www.aro.army.mil/aronreview03/computer03.htm" rel="nofollow" target="_new">http://www.aro.army.mil/aronreview03/computer03.htm</a>Using parts of the brain and an embedded quantum computer interface with outlets on the skull itself (also the antenna, along with jaw bone) you could use the body power and the ELF’s of the brain for sending data, and incoming messages intercepted by the interfaced computers will be sent via the Net-Centric download from an AWACS, Satellite, UAV or other device. This will prevent the need for additional batteries, which cause issues with weight and recharging. Brain waves are an incredible source of power and the human brain can crunch a significant amount of visual input. A thought with intensity could take priority, for instance a downed comrade would evoke predictable brain waves as the situation got too hot and therefore be able to prioritize a command or demand for great bandwidth. High levels of anxiety outside the whole of the sum of troops would alert commanders and systems. Don’t collect the information if you are not going to use it, SOX Sarbaines Oxley and Sam Walton’s data theories for Wal-Mart come to mind. One idea is to have an energy bean around circular light bands sending massive amounts of date for seconds only. The energy would create a plasma tube of non-atmospheric air, the data would be between in the tube-less-ness of space.[http://worldthinktank.net/wttbbs/index.php?showtopic=84]But all this data and all this information is dangerous in that if the information goes away all of a sudden you may find yourself in a world of hurt while the net-centric pieces do battle the old fashion way and do not know where the other is. Special Teams in the first place maybe better off. A pulsed ELF device could knock out your communications, a flash electromagnetic device could render all the electronics within a near radius completely gone and heaven forbid a nuclear neutron bomb. And if you have a net-centric wireless system, which is being hacked you will have to turn it off, while you will be trying to hack into your enemies system of net-centric blue force or red force tracking. A hacker or your hacking team will of course wish to turn the blue dots to red and vise versa to allow for you to attack yourself, like a run away virus in the body, which uses your own bio system to attack itself. A grappling art such as Judo uses this concept quite nicely. With any new system and the leaking of top-secret data, you need to have an answer to those who could be hacking into your system because if they win in the virtual battle-space realm they control the game, similarly the opponent of 50 years ago needed air superiority to win. One answer is to not have a system at all, but appear to have a system, then attack your opponents system, but actually never be there in the first place? In other words set up ghosts, using smart dust and virtual targets which do not actually exist, but appear to and watch what is firing at the ghosts, then pin-point those position and attack based on what was firing at the ghost targets. Fighting a war and allowing your enemy to expend their cache without avail. Using these disruptions of expended ordinance to observe, track and act upon them using this data. OODA Loop without actually entering or risking assets in the appropriate battle-space, thus allowing your enemy to act as if you are acting when actually no action exists. What if you gave a war and only your enemy showed up in the kill zone? Then you have all options, no losses and the political will for decision makers to have one last choice before rendering the fear of God’s wrath. Another interesting idea is to allow your enemy to hack into a system, which is closed loop with bad data drawing them into a situation again where you are not.Using this system to locate and track the hack all the way back and then launch the attack. All the while giving the wrong data. And even if you do not attempt this scenario allow your enemy to believe you are thus, rendering them confused if they do hack your system. If your enemy does this, do not rely on their data only your own secured data and your special teams, which can run autonomous at anytime or within the net-centric game. If you hack into a false system, create a diversion to appear as if you have fallen into the trap to allow them to chase a decoy set.[http://worldthinktank.net/wttbbs/index.php?showtopic=33]All the while continuing your observation and follow thru on your own plan and modifying the needs of your advancement to the confusion of your enemy and chaos of the battlespace. Cyber Crimes And Solutions

We are currently living in Cyber age, where Internet and computers have major impacts on our way of living, social life and the way we conduct businesses. The usage of information technology has posed great security challenges and ethical questions in front of us. Just as every thing has positives and negatives, usage of information technology is beneficial as well as insecure. With the growth of the internet, network security has become a major concern. Cyber crimes have emerged rapidly in the last few years and have major consequences. Cyber criminals are doing every thing from stealing money, hacking into others computer, stealing intellectual property, spreading viruses and worms to damage computers connected on the internet and committing frauds. Stoppage of cyber crimes is a major concern today. Cyber criminal make use of the vulnerabilities in computer soft wares and networks to their advantage.Hacking:Hacking or Cracking is a major cyber crime committed today. Hacker makes use of the weaknesses and loop holes in operating systems to destroy data and steal important information from victim's computer. Cracking is normally done through the use of a backdoor program installed on your machine. A lot of crackers also try to gain access to resources through the use of password cracking softwares. Hackers can also monitor what u do on your computer and can also import files on your computer. A hacker could install several programs on to your system without your knowledge. Such programs could also be used to steal personal information such as passwords and credit card information. Important data of a company can also be hacked to get the secret information of the future plans of the company.Cyber-Theft:Cyber-Theft is the use of computers and communication systems to steal information in electronic format. Hackers crack into the systems of banks and transfer money into their own bank accounts. This is a major concern, as larger amounts of money can be stolen and illegally transferred. Many newsletters on the internet provide the investors with free advice recommending stocks where they should invest. Sometimes these recommendations are totally bogus and cause loss to the investors. Credit card fraud is also very common. Most of the companies and banks don't reveal that they have been the victims of cyber -theft because of the fear of loosing customers and share holders. Cyber-theft is the most common and the most reported of all cyber-crimes. Cyber-theft is a popular cyber-crime because it can quickly bring experienced cyber-criminal large cash resulting from very little effort. Furthermore, there is little chance a professional cyber-criminal will be apprehended by law enforcement.Viruses and worms:Viruses and worms is a very major threat to normal users and companies. Viruses are computer programs that are designed to damage computers. It is named virus because it spreads from one computer to another like a biological virus. A virus must be attached to some other program or documents through which it enters the computer. A worm usually exploits loop holes in soft wares or the operating system. Trojan horse is dicey. It appears to do one thing but does something else. The system may accept it as one thing. Upon execution, it may release a virus, worm or logic bomb. A logic bomb is an attack triggered by an event, like computer clock reaching a certain date. Chernobyl and Melissa viruses are the recent examples.Experts estimate that the Mydoom worm infected approximately a quarter-million computers in a single day in January 2004. Back in March 1999, the Melissa virus was so powerful that it forced Microsoft and a number of other very large companies to completely turn off their e-mail systems until the virus could be contained.Solutions:An important question arises that how can these crimes be prevented. A number of techniques and solutions have been presented but the problems still exists and are increasing day by day.Antivirus And Anti spyware Software:Аntivirus software consists of computer programs that attempt to identify, thwart and eliminate computer viruses and other malicious software. Anti spy wares are used to restrict backdoor program, trojans and other spy wares to be installed on the computer.Firewalls:A firewall protects a computer network from unauthorized access. Network firewalls may be hardware devices, software programs, or a combination of the two. A network firewall typically guards an internal computer network against malicious access from outside the network.Cryptography:Cryptography is the science of encrypting and decrypting information. Encryption is like sending a postal mail to another party with a lock code on the envelope which is known only to the sender and the recipient. A number of cryptographic methods have been developed and some of them are still not cracked.Cyber Ethics and Laws:Cyber ethics and cyber laws are also being formulated to stop cyber crimes. It is a responsibility of every individual to follow cyber ethics and cyber laws so that the increasing cyber crimes shall reduce. Security softwares like anti viruses and anti spy wares should be installed on all computers, in order to remain secure from cyber crimes. Internet Service Providers should also provide high level of security at their servers in order to keep their clients secure from all types of viruses and mallicious programs.Written by:Shaikh Mohsin AyazDepartment of Computer Science, University of Karachi
