Internet Identity Theft - Wireless Network Security Issues

Seems that everything's going wireless these days and though it may be super convenient, it also brings up some issues about safety and security of your personal information. So we will be discussing some issues concerning wireless network security. Since many of us may be coming online to do some business or to accomplish our shopping tasks, it is crucial to understand that there are security risks to using just any available wireless network. Be aware of wireless network security issues including the risk that hackers could potentially break into that wireless network and get the information that can allow your identity to be stolen or allows the thieves to drain all of the money from your accounts. That is why it is so important for you to give some serious thoughts to wireless network security if you are often faced with using this type of technology. Facts are that most home systems have build in wireless network security that is reliable and this should give you peace of mind. These systems are made so that no one can access them unless they have a specific access code. If you have a wireless system, then you may notice that your computer can offer up many different signal choices when you go to connect your computer to the Internet. You will also notice that some of them are secure (requiring a password), and some of them are not. You may be able to hook up to the unsecured ones, but unless you have access to a password you should not be able to access the secured ones. This is because their wireless network security is in place and working properly. Nowadays, laptops make it very easy for anyone to get online in certain public places but heed the warning that always comes along with this! During these times is when you should be considering your wireless network security. Most nice hotels and coffee houses among other places, offer free wireless Internet. However, there is very little security when you use these types of services. For the sake of wireless network security, you should never use this type of access for important things like personal banking or shopping using Paypal or your credit cards. Thieves could very easily get into your accounts this way because you have made it extremely easy for them to see your personal information. If you are in a hotel using their wireless Internet, and you find that you really must to do some personal banking, then ask the hotel if they have a business center that has a secure connection for this. Never disregard the importance of seeking wireless network security even in the safest looking places! Also, remember that even though you may have found something that works for you and is convenient in a public business center, you have to be aware that someone will be coming along after you have long gone to use that same computer. So be sure to sign out of everything, and clear the cookies and history before you leave any public computer. Even though wireless network security is risky, leaving behind clues on any secure connection shared with others can be risky as well. Always use caution with any type of connection, even if it is one that comes from your home. Although, this is a much bigger worry in urban areas, remember that identity theft can happen in small cities or towns as well.

Security Issues - Wireless Banking & Trading

It seems like the world is going wireless these days, including the banking and trading industries. Wireless banking and trading is still in its infancy stage, and one must keep up with new products, new technological breakthroughs, and developmental aids to help with transitions from the old to the new. Standards are changing for APIs (interfaces), gateways, security methods, screens, operating systems, browsers, handheld devices, and different bandwidth requirements. All these changes reveal risks to systems and consumers. Wireless banking and trading can be risky, lengthy, and complicated to develop and use. Interfaces must be able to connect backend systems already in place, and application servers have to accommodate all protocols and devices. This is a must because manufacturers do not know which device users plan to use. This is true for application servers - they must be able to communicate with all gateways like WAP, GSM, two-way pagers, and other devices. Wireless networks function independently, and many devices, especially handheld, utilize their own standards to deliver data over data channels. Users personalize by customizing screens, alerts, notifications, and messaging devices easily. Systems should be capable of sending notices to users as needed regardless of devices types and brands. Platform selection is important and challenging for banking institutions and should not be done independently. Platforms should have the ability to integrate easily and reliably with new gateways to the backend or existing system. Some banking institutions outsource the development, implementation, and hosting of their systems and some may choose to use a third party to implement and host their system. All are viable options. Security is the most important issue facing financial institutions today. In an age of wireless communications with millions of users, all systems - whether wireless or cable - run the risk of hackers sometimes resulting in devastating losses. Wireless financial transactions are more attractive targets for the criminally-minded as their gains are greater. Users have worries that personal identifying information - credit card account numbers, identities, and other information - may be stolen. Such fears are confirmed with statistics indicating that more than ninety percent of corporate documentation/financial files have been hacked. Data flows through wireless devices are vulnerable with many systems offering little to no security with most security transgressions being carried out by employees working within the institutions or even the service providers themselves. Individual computing powers of handheld devices limit the ability to customize security, and many facilities that handle financial transactions are using a two-step code verification procedure as a means to protect and verify accessibility. This means that the user must be able to enter the correct codes to gain system entry. These codes must agree in order to authorize any transaction. It should be noted that the use of a two-step code verification procedure has shown a drastic reduction in the number of hacking incidents simply because of the requirement for personal knowledge of the same codes by the user, the service provider, and the financial institution. Another widely used system is the PK1 or Public Key Infrastructure utilized by many personal digital assistants and other similar devices. This system employs the use of two keys - public and private - to verify and decode data. The bank or other institution then uses the same system to prevent unauthorized system entry. It is more or less a question of what is better - speed or security. Encryptions vary depending on the platform used and the operating system with encryption speeds varying according to software selected. Another aid in security protection is the use of user identifications and individualized unknown passwords.

A Primer on Security Attacks - Computer Security Issues

It is very important to educate ourselves about different types of security attacks. A computer can be attacked for many reason like gain control over the computer system, to spy the activity of a user on the internet, to rob highly important personal data such as credit card details, SSN, passwords, etc; to access Wi-Fi internet, to malign the performance of a computer, etc.Such attacks that are mentioned above can be done through various ways. Let us learn about some of the different types of security attacks that a computer may encounter. One of the well known security attacks are physical attacks such as stealing data or any hardware parts from the computer, disrupting the normal performance of the computer. Attacks can also be aimed at running the proper functioning of any service on the computer such as changing the TCP/IP settings and breaking the access to the server. A system can be hacked by means of backdoor programs that allow other malicious programs to enter the system. Usage of Virus/Spyware infected pen-drive on a computer system can all sorts of unwanted problems. Activity caused by user can also cause attacks on the computer. Downloading e-mail attachments from unknown sources and submitting username and passwords on unsecure login pages. Bounce attacks are attacks done on oneâEUR(TM)s computer by means of someone elseâEUR(TM)s hacked computer. Port scanner software searches for any open hosts present on a computer network and is then attacked. Spyware, malware, virus attacks are one of the most well-known types of attacks. A hacker can only look for an open Wi-Fi connection that he can make use of to carry out his practices. Such attacks are very common these days as many are going for wireless internet connection. Different types of security attacks can be solved by upgrading the security of your computer. Your computer may be prone to the above mentioned attacks because defense mechanism of your computer is slow. Security programs such as antivirus and firewall can help you overcome such attacks. Internet Hacking Raises Many Security Issues

If there is one thing that people do not want to put up with when they are online, it is a hacker that disrupts Internet connections and even affects the files a user has on a computer. Here is a look at how hacking the web raises security issues and how hackers can be stopped so that these security issues will not be a problem. One of the ways that hacking the web raises security issues is that it can create dangerous software. Hackers can easily insert malware into a computer. This consists of files that can be especially damaging to the computer. The reason for these damaging capabilities is that a hacker can easily look through and edit files that are inside a website or the computer of a user on a website. Hacking the web raises security issues because it not only affects the websites involves, but it can also affect the users of the sites that have been affected.Hackers who work on hacking the web can steal specific information that other groups may give to websites. This includes phone numbers that can be used to call people with unsolicited offers. In some cases, a hacker may have more control over the malware that is used and therefore insert this software into a mobile phone that is listed on a website database. This can cause the hacker to steal even more phone numbers. In many cases, the hackers can send data to people on a contact list and this is then considered spam. They can send viruses and other pieces of malware that will only end up expanding the level of power that the hacker has. Some people may not know what to do with the emails that they get from a hacker because they may not know exactly whether the message is legitimate. This makes it clear that hacking the web raises security issues.A hacker can steal the especially sensitive financial data, and this is another reason why hacking the web raises security issues. For people who are going to be sending financial information and other important pieces of data to a website the information can be especially important. A hacker for that person to use for that person's advantage can steal the information. This includes not only credit card numbers and other information regarding these cards but also Social Security numbers.Since hacking the web raises security issues, it is best to use a few simple tips to work with improving security. For businesses that run websites that may be prone to hackers, it is best to install a good firewall onto the server. This can be used to help monitor incoming transmissions and block any software that is going to be sent to the server without the permission of the company that owns the server.Having the appropriate antivirus software is needed. A typical firewall program will have all of this information. This can be used for a server as long as the program will automatically update itself as new information on viruses and other dangerous things that hackers may have to gain access to a website or your computer are known. With automatic updates, it will be easier to be protected. In addition, for people who visit these sites, a firewall can be used. General measures that the average person should be using can help too. These include visiting only websites that can be trusted and by not opening any online links from any emails that may have been sent as a result from visiting any sites. It is very clear that hacking the web raises security issues. By taking care of these risks with a good firewall and antivirus program and by recognizing how hackers will look into affecting a system it will be easier to handle hackers and any other dangerous things that may come around. Security Issues Abound As Social Networking Goes to Work

Employees use two types of social networking sites. They bring their Facebook, MySpace, YouTube and other identities to the office. At the same time, they use professional social networking - LinkedIn and others - for more "official" duties. It has the potential to be a major problem. A recent Newsfactor piece based on Forrester research identifies social networking as a key element of the ongoing corporate Web 2.0 wave. By 2013, the firm says, social networks will constitute a $2 billion chunk of what will be a $4.6 billion sector.Hopefully, organizations will catch up on the security front. The piece says that only half of Web filters deployed by Barracuda Networks are blocking MySpace or Facebook. Those who are doing so are trying to guard against virus and spyware and to maintain employee productivity. It would be interesting to understand how many of these organizations understand that social networking sites are great avenues for phishing and other social engineer exploits, and for dishonest or ignorant employees to send vital information beyond the firewall.Recently CNN had a nice overview of the flow of social networking into the corporate space. What the author doesn't say is that the evolution of social networking from consumer to business use is precisely what happened with cell phones, Wi-Fi and other tools: People used them in their private lives, liked them, and brought them to work. In this case, the writer says, more secure, corporate-aimed offerings are available. Yammer, for instance, is a business version of Twitter. Other corporate social networking newbies, according to Forrester, include Awareness, Communispace and Jive. One of the advantages of the fact that new technology has moved from the consumer to business world so many times in the recent past is that experts consider the security issues more quickly. There seems to be a bit less denial. <a href="http://www.itbusinessedge.com/item/?ci=49053" rel="nofollow" target="_new">This Legal Technology</a> piece offers a good description of social networks, and references a Black Hat presentation that looked at insecure features of social networks and identified the biggest vulnerabilities. They include cross-site request forgery (CSRF), cross-site scripting (XSS) and the lack of a mechanism to validate the security of customer applications. The writer offers seven tips for safely using and administering social networks. This is not all theoretic: Business people are using social networks - and the bad guys are going after them. For instance, <a href="http://www.itbusinessedge.com/item/?ci=49057" rel="nofollow" target="_new">SPAMfighter cites</a> reports from The Washington Post's Brian Krebs about spear phishing attacks against about 10,000 LinkedIn members. The story says social networking sites often are the target of spear phishers because users are used to getting e-mail from other members. This e-mail purported to come from <a href="mailto:support@linkedin.com">support@linkedin.com</a> and carried the subject line "Re: business contacts." Recipients following the instructions in the e-mail installed a malicious program aimed at stealing sensitive information from the computer. There is a lot to worry about. <a href="http://www.darkreading.com/document.asp?doc_id=162226" rel="nofollow" target="_new">Dark Reading </a>offers a scary vignette on how dangerous a social networking site can be. The big problem is that there is no way to simultaneously optimize security and interactivity. To a great extent, emphasizing one comes at the expense of the other. Dark Reading runs through some of the problems, and links to pages that describe in more detail seven of the most dangerous activities: impersonation and targeted hacks; spam and bots; "weaponized" applications; XSS and CSRF; identity theft and corporate espionage.

Common Voice Over IP Issues and Possible Solutions

While VoIP today is considered a stable and reliable technology for personal and business communications, there are still a few kinks here and there. Like all new and evolving technologies, there are still pitfalls that VoIP converts may experience at one time or another. Ranging from minor inconveniences such as compatibility issues to major ones such as misrouted calls, users of VoIP have to occasionally deal with problems that are just as if not more disruptive than the problems associated with a regular 'legacy' phone system.Deployment problemsEven before shifting to Internet telephony, a user must check the speed and bandwidth of the current broadband connection to see whether it can handle the added load of a VoIP. Typical business connections pose problems in particular, as the added burden of voice calls (increased data transmissions) may adversely affect operations in the long run. Adding bandwidth and speed with Quality of Service guarantees will likely suffice for most businesses. But for businesses with extensive calling requirements like telemarketing companies, a more exhaustive analysis of traffic volume, peak call usage, maximum concurrent calls and other information is necessary. These are required by the service provider to enable it to anticipate and roll out and/or recommend the bandwidth and speed needed at any given time.Porting PSTN numbers Individuals and businesses often find it necessary to migrate the number that they're using to their new VoIP service. The porting of numbers, called Local Number Portability (LNP), results in seamless transitions to VoIP. The downsides, however, are the complicated process, varying time frame for porting the number, and possibility of rejection due to technicalities. The good thing is that it takes only patience, goodwill and lots of grace to navigate the complicated steps in the migration of numbers, and resolve any rejected request.Security issuesOne stumbling block that keeps many from switching to VoIP is the often unsubstantiated fear of worms, viruses, denial-of-service (DOS) attacks and Internet-related problems. Others are concerned too on how secure VoIP calls are and if these are not prone to hacking. While it's true that voice calls in VoIP are sent as data packets, the possibility of these being corrupted while on transit is quite distant: it has identifiers (headers) that the sending and receiving ends must check, the packets are usually encrypted, and both ends of the call are likely to have first level firewall.More worrisome would be the possibility of voice interception that may result in wiretapping and toll fraud, and data interception that may cause confidential information such as passwords and personal info to fall into malevolent hands. Physical security policies, stricter authentication mechanisms and more stringent security measures like disabling remote access to the graphical are just some of the ways administrators can address security concerns. With the increasing rate in VoIP adoption, issues with broadband telephony will likely taper off as fierce competition fuels research and development in this emerging technology. Eventually, the hesitant attitude that some people have towards VoIP will become a thing of the past. Saiju George is an IP communications and business software expert. The 3 Major Security Issues of Your Ecommerce Solution

Website security of your online store keeps your customers satisfied and secure, safeguarding your investment. It also helps to maintain a steady growth of business. A secure website is trusted by customers who feel safe to divulge their personal and credit card details. There are many reasons to give website's security priority in your online store business. Here are some major reasons that should help you realize the necessity of security for your online shop:1.	Networks and servers of service providers may be vulnerable to attack by "malware". This is referred to malicious software, a family of harmful applications, which may come in various forms and inflict major damage. It is not only an issue for your computer and your website, malware can damage entire network; server may get seriously infected and classified data from server, including that from your site may be lost or damaged. Before buying host packages, make sure that the host is equipped with proper technology to survive and defend attacks by malware like viruses, spyware and Trojans.2.	Another dreaded kind of attack can be from cyber criminals that exploit the route of botnets. Such attacks faced by hosting networks are referred to as DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service). In case of such attacks, the network is flooded by illegitimate requests. Once the network gets flooded it slows down and the genuine traffic cannot access the server or your website. This is the most oldest and difficult type of attack where hacker manipulate an unsuspecting server to launch attack. Make sure that web host you are signing with, has the capability and technical knowledge to protect your site in case of such attack.3.	With spread of ecommerce solutions, millions of transactions are done over the web, often involving huge sums of money. This makes the internet a happy hunting ground for hackers, who are on prowl to hack classified personal data like credit card number or bank account details. As owner of online store it is your responsibility to safeguard details of your clients from hackers. It is imperative to take proper security measures and update your systems at regular intervals. A fraud or case of stolen data may damage your credibility, not to mention the legal hassles. However, in last few days, several Nokia N8 owners complained that the phone powers off all by itself. Niklas Savander, Exec. Vice President for Nokia, acknowledged the issue at the official Nokia Conversations blog that a small number of users have been affected by the significant issue. He claimed that Nokia has found and fixed the source of the problem. This is not the first time that Nokia's highly anticipated touchscreen smartphone has suffered from critical issue. Last year, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic manufactured during a specific time period suffered from defective speaker and screen issues.  The pompously launched Nokia N8 was reviewed by us in October but we didn't face any such issue - at least Prasad Naik didn't complain about the power issue. The power down or power out issue is limited to only certain users. This means that the issue is present only in a specific batch of N8 phones.  In case you're facing power issues with your newly bought Nokia N8, please visit Nokia Care Center immediately to get it fixed. LCD Polarity Issues

<a be="" can="" lcd="" screens="" title="#jsArticleStepImageCredit1 rel=thinbox><IMG title="></A> Fotolia.com</A>">LCD screens can be problematic.Liquid crystal display (LCD) technology has helped shape the face of our modern laptops and television screens but if you've ever had to adjust the screen to better see the picture or experienced strange image problems, you've experienced issues with your screen's polarity. Polarity electrically controls the filtering of light at the pixel level by containing light vibrations in the same plane. However, depending on the position of your screen or the light requirements of what you are viewing, you may experience some common issues.FlickerWhen an LCD screen does not have the proper voltage transmitting light, the pixels in your screen tend to flicker. However, modern LCD screens have alternating pixels in anti-phase which makes the flicker over areas usually unnoticeable.Dot CrawlIf your LCD screen flickers substantially, it may mean that your common-electrode voltage is not set up correctly and you may perceive a dot crawl effect on plain and medium bright colors, where the pixels slowly appear to move in dots along the frame.Voltage SettingGrossly incorrect voltage settings could result in image sticking, essentially "burning" the image into your screen so that it will be visible even after the image is replaced.Colors on ScreenThe colors you can see on your LCD screen vary depending on the angle at which you are viewing the images. Usually, the image will look light if looked down on and look darker if looked up at. Newer liquid crystal modes do not experience this problem as much but may have longer response times or lower contrast.Motion BlurMotion blur is the result of the sample-and-hold effect when an image is held on screen and the eye tracks it from one frame to the next. This makes it difficult to see motion properly and is a problem in some LCD screens. The pixels may have a slow response time, assisting in the cause of this effect, but as the frame rate increases and development moves toward flickering the screen's backlight, this effect should be reduced.
