Google Reader‘s interface is famously minimalist, but browsers hardly make ideal reading platforms. Other bullet points include a slim .35-inch profile, a 1.2Ghz dual-core processor, and an 8MP rear camera with 1080p recording plus a 2MP front camera. According to <em>Reuters</em>, RIM contributed $770 million to the effort while Ericsson is on the hook for $340 million when the deal closes, which is expected to be in the third quarter of this year. What they'll do with the over 6,000 patents and patent applications covering everything from wireless to optical to semiconductors isn't immediately clear, but what <em>won't</em> happen is Google using them as leverage to stave off the patent trolling hordes. Before any of that happens, the sale has to clear US and Canadian courts which is why a joint hearing has been scheduled for July 11th, so expect plenty of words -- and probably a few more cross licensing agreements -- from the involved parties by then.</p>

<div><br/><div></div><br/><div><img alt="" class="alignright size-full wp-image-536399" src="http://img853.imageshack.us/img853/6441/stars.jpg" title="stars" width="225" /></div><br/></div><br/>In recent months, we’ve been hearing growing rumors about YouTube adding more curation and original content, and now sources are saying that the video site plans to add “channels” to make itself more viable for Internet-connected TVs.<br/><br/><a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704013604576247060940913104.html#ixzz1ImJfxMtM" target="_blank"><em>The Wall Street Journal</em></a> cites “people familiar with the matter” as saying that parent company Google is planning on altering YouTube’s homepage to focus on subjects such as arts and sports. It plans to add 20 premium channels that would have five to 10 hours of professional programming per week. Other channels would feature current YouTube content (here’s hoping for the “cats running into mirrors” channel).<br/><br/>The whole deal will cost $100 million, according to the <em>WSJ</em>.<br/><br/>This news isn’t particularly novel when you consider YouTube’s recent moves — as well as rumors about its recent moves. In March, Google acquired web video production company Next New Networks with the aim of helping content partners create better videos. At that time, it announced that it was creating a program called YouTube Next to provide grants and training to partners (YouTube Partner Grants program also launched in July to fund talented users).<br/><br/>There were also rumors buzzing around in February that YouTube CEO Salar Kamangar will be building out the site’s recently instated talent program by offering big-name stars their own YouTube channels. Those stars would then fill the channels with original content, while also keeping complete control of those three-minute videos. YouTube, in turn, would rake in the ad revenue.<br/><br/>And let’s not forget sports — YouTube is also apparently in talks with some major sporting leagues to bring even more live games to the site (it has already featured livestreaming Indian Premier League cricket matches).<br/><br/>Adding more curation to the site via channels only makes sense given the direction in which YouTube is apparently headed — and the revenue the site could generate via ad-supported channels.<br/><br/>We’ve reached out to YouTube for comment.

We've seen huge interest in the phone over the last few days since pre-ordering began at The Carphone Warehouse," a spokesperson told Techradar.</P><br /><P>"We now have a great offering of Android handsets which will continue to grow in the New Year."</P><br /><P>The phone will be <a href="http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/mobiles/mobile-phones/NEXUS-S-FROM-GOOGLE?intcmp=hp-hp-bnr-v1-1163">available to buy both on contract or PAYG/SIM free</A>, with the former costing £35 per month for a free phone - O2, Vodafone, T-Mobile and Orange are supporting the phone, but Three is nowhere to be seen.</P><br /><P>However, while £35 per month does get you a plethora of minutes and unlimited texts, the most you can get data-wise is 750MB included.</P><br /><P><STRONG>Go big for a gig</STRONG></P><br /><P>To get over 1GB allowance, you'll need to sign up to a £50 a month deal, which seems a little extreme, and will hopefully be updated when the networks start offering it directly (if they ever do).</P><br /><P>SIM free the Google Nexus S will cost £549.95, with the PAYG curiously the same, but with a mandatory £10 top up - usually paying a network for the phone will get you a micro-discount at least.</P><br /><P>Still, there's not long to wait, as the Google Nexus S UK release date is set for 20 December - enough time to blackmail Santa (with those photos of him bothering that OTHER reindeer) into bringing you one.</P>

Wireless Networks Simplified

<br />		<p><b>Initial choice and setup</b></p><p>You have got that new broadband line ordered for your home or office, but you realise that you want to be able to surf the net from your back yard or from that meeting room that you forgot to flood wire. The obvious answer is to take the option of including wireless in your broadband order or going to your local PC shop and buying a brand new "all singing, all dancing" wireless router.</p><p>But what does all this entail, what are those bare essentials to get your wireless network running in a safe and efficient way? Maybe you have heard that wireless networking is very complicated and insecure. Perhaps you have already got your network running, but don't realise that you have just unwittingly opened yourself to the rest of the world.</p><p>At iOpening, we don't think technology has to be overly complicated and with a few good tips, we believe that you will be empowered to do a few things yourself to make your life that much easier. In the next few sections, we'll be discussing some of the basic issues that you may come across when setting up your wireless network for the first time or when you're having trouble with your existing one.</p><p><b>Get Connected</b></p><p>It is really busy out there in the suburbs, as well as local business districts! If you don't believe me, if you have a wireless enabled laptop, just fire it up and have a look at your wireless network utility. You will find that wireless networks are just everywhere. You will probably see networks like BT HomeHub-xxxx, Belkin, Jones Family, etc. Ever since the local service providers have given away wireless devices with their services, there has been a virtual explosion of wireless networks. This can be a problem as wireless networks communicate on a specific subset of radio channels and are limited in a range that can be used. Basically, this comes down to 11 useable wireless channels. The problem is that these channels tend to overlap at a point and can cause interference with each other.</p><p>So what does this mean to you as a user? The choice of 11 channels impacts the amount of useable wireless signal, as they end up cancelling each other out. You might notice this if you are trying to use your wireless network and find that you have a slow network, loss of connectivity to your wireless device, or the inability to use your wireless network in different parts of your home or office. The best alternative would be to select a wireless channel that is 5 channels away from your neighbour's. Now, this can be difficult as you may have several neighbours using channels 1,6, and 11 several times over (if not other channels). As this may be the case, the simplest approach is to select a channel that is already showing a very weak signal on your wireless client and is 5 channels separate from the strongest of your neighbours. Once you have this locked in, you will have the best signal that you can hope for.</p><p>How do you actually get the best connectivity to your wireless device at your home or business? Essentially, it is a bit of trial and error, but fear not, there are some basic steps you can take in order to give you the best performance without too much trouble.</p><p>o	First, establish a good central location to install your wireless device. You want to make sure that you can get a consistent signal throughout your location.</p><p>o	Consider the building materials that your building is made of. Solid brick walls, stone, and concrete can impact your wireless signal as the radio waves will bounce off those solid materials.</p><p>o	Try not to house your wireless device in an enclosed space as this can impede your radio signal. If you are restricted by where your broadband and/or telephone line is situated, remember that you can always cable to a more appropriate location.</p><p>o	Finally, look out for other devices that might impact your wireless radio strength such as certain 2.4 GHz telephones, constant use of microwaves (if you eat a lot of leftovers), and other wireless devices.</p><p><b>Secure My Network</b></p><p>Security or the factor of insecurity of wireless networks has previously put off a lot of users of this technology. Due to the tremendous convenience and accessibility to wireless technology today, the issue of security has sometimes been put on the back burner. <br /><br>Don't ignore it - security is relevant and it will be an issue if you don't protect yourself. Besides, you wouldn't leave your keys in the car and let just anyone have a drive, would you? There are a number of things that you can do in order to protect yourself from the occasional abuser of wireless networks (free users) or hackers.</p><p>First of all, make sure that the wireless device that you select does what you require. If you're looking for basic security features for your home, most devices will do the trick. However if you need a strong firewall, logging, etc. you might want to look at a business class device.</p><p>There are several basic parameters that you will require in order to secure your wireless device to a safe level. To begin with, the default settings that are on a wireless device should be changed. These settings are generally the device name, login, and device administrator details. There are so many wireless networks installed out there using their default manufacturer's names. This spells big trouble as this usually indicates that the device is open and ready for attack, as it may be a	complete default unit.</p><p>You can avoid this by first of all changing the device name to something innocuous like 32skidoo or d3ltaEE. Make sure that you do not use a name that is either associated to your address, business, or surname, as it could very well attract unwanted guests. Make sure that you set up the wireless name or SSID to non-broadcast. This will stop the SSID from being broadcasted to wireless clients and will dissuade casual hackers.</p><p>The next basic security setting that we would advise is to implement encryption of any kind. WEP and WPA both have published hacks, but we recommend the latter for its use of stronger encryption. There are other things to help WPA along to be more secure such as password security. Remember this mantra: change the password to your wireless device (and make it long and change it often), change the password to your encryption (and make it long and change it often). <br />		<p>The reason why wireless networks are more vulnerable than wired networks is that because the data is transmitted through the broadcast radio technology that works on the same microwave radio band (2.4 gigahertz) as cordless phones, instead of a dedicated cable.</p><p>It is possible to be intercepted by hackers, especially if there is not a firewall installed because the networking transmissions are broadcast indiscriminately. Drive by hackers and casual intruders can pick up the radio signal 20 to 50 meters and as much as 500 meters if there is sensitive equipment. It is estimated that 30 percent of all wireless networks have already had a hacking attempt made, even though it is illegal.</p><p>Your wireless network can become contaminated with a virus, if another wireless computer taps into the network and has it, contaminating your server and the other computers on that network.</p><p>When wireless networks came out, they were more convenient and often a higher speed access than traditional wired networks. It soon became evident that they were easier to be compromised since multiple users were using the same broadcast signals. If a server is not secure, encrypted and firewall protected, it can cause data loss of confidential information and virus attacks that can make a system vulnerable to crashing.</p><p>Many government agencies are no longer using wireless networks because of the security issues. For most other usages, a wireless network is suitable, as long as it is firewall protected properly, but you may want to consider the additional security of a wired network, if you handle sensitive information.</p><p>The safest thing is to have an IT or network security audit done to evaluate the multiple computers on your network, whether wireless or wired, for security and firewall needs. Businesses that transmit data, store crucial customer information like credit cards and other confidential information need to be especially aware of the consequences, should the information fall into the wrong hands.</p><p>By having an IT security audit done on your system, you can discover any vulnerabilities and protect against them. <br />		<p>Unfortunately, many of us are not sufficiently concerned with the security of our computer's data (unless we are working for the government). Usually it's not a problem, because if someone wants to enter your computer, they must break into your house too. But when you have a wireless network, things are a little bit different. The radios signals that are used by a wireless connection won't stop at the walls of your house. The information freely floats in the air. Even someone who is passing by your house and driving a car will be able, with a wireless networking adapter, to grab information right off your computer, including deleting your files, inserting viruses, using your computer to send spam, and so on - unless you take steps to protect your network.</p><p>Along with the WI-FI equipment comes a security technology called Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP). A very typical aspect of WI-Fi wireless networking is the fact that WEP can be hacked. The hackers successfully stolen the the secret WEP keys that were used to encrypt data on WI-FI network.</p><p>A new system security was implemented in 2002 by the WI-FI Alliance: Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA). To hack the encryption key at this new protection system is much more difficult. Although WEP isn't as secure as WPA, you take a much greater security risk if you don't use WEP at all.</p><p>Many AP's manufacturers, in order to encrypt features like WEP or WPA, added a variety of other security features described as firewall protection. <br />		<p>The word "hack" implies neither illegal nor unethical activity. A hack, in fact, is simply a way that a user makes a piece of technology or, for that matter, anything else more useful in their lives. The illegal activities associated with compromising security, sending viruses and so forth are usually referred to as "cracks" or "black hat" activity in modern parlance. A hack, as we shall see, is a very good thing when it's done within the acceptable boundaries of legality and ethics. Hacking your wireless connection simply means making it better at what it does, oftentimes through your own actions rather than through any technological wizardry.</p><p>A 4G wireless connection can be received on a city-wide basis. This means that you're working with all of the power of the Internet available to you in any location. This is how a great hack starts. You may have already gotten very good at using the Internet to make life better at home, but now you have the entirety of that resource when you're out and about. To understand how one hacks this, you start with a need. As an example, we'll take astronomy, for two reasons: one, it's done outdoors; two, it requires a great deal of information to enjoy this activity to its greatest potential.</p><p>Using your wireless broadband connection means that you have full access to your laptop anywhere. Starting with scouting your location, you can use the laptop, in the field, to pull up a topographic and satellite map of your location. This allows you to choose the best spot to observe the sky. If you're worried about light pollution, you can pull up a satellite image and find a road with few businesses or streetlights off of which to observe.</p><p>The next part of our example hack would be using the laptop to pull up an ephemeris, and using a compass to orient the computer properly so that it provides an accurate image of the sky you're observing. This can be used with your telescope to find the correct settings for azimuth and elevation. If your ephemeris gives only sidereal coordinates and you don't understand them, it's no problem. You have the entire Internet in front of you: Look it up. This is an example of using technology to its maximum. So far, we've used the major functions of a GPS system, a sky-mapping device, a telescope coordinate guide and a research tool for learning new information. This is with only a laptop and an Internet connection.</p><p>The best part of the hack comes when you find something new. If you see a planet, for example, and you really don't know much about it, you can easily set the kids or your friends to work looking up information. The wireless Internet makes this entire affair more enjoyable and educational than it would be otherwise. <br />		<p>There is no doubt that wireless technology has evolved the way we communicate. With the popular 2.4 GHz frequency being unlicensed and inexpensive, people all around the world have been able to do things that were nothing short of impossible in the past. While this may be the case, the same also applies to hackers; wireless technologies have allowed them to not only penetrate the impenetrable, but also break into personal networks with blazing speed (as in minutes and even seconds if the wireless network's access point [AP] is completely insecure).</p><p>So what can happen if someone breaks into your network? Well for starters, it acts as a gateway for hackers to break into your system. On top of that, they can install sniffers (which allow them to steal such things as passwords and other sensitive information), adware, spyware, trojans, viruses, worms, backdoors, rootkits, and other malware as well as pursue wireless jamming attacks, encryption attacks, DoS attacks, and other various attacks. In short, given enough time, the sky is the limit on what a hacker could do when they get inside your AP.</p><p>At this point, many may say to themselves "Well, I have nothing of value on my computer, so I don't care if they hack into it". This couldn't be any farther from the truth. If hackers compromise your computer, they'll turn it into something called a "zombie" (in other words, their slave), which will do anything the hacker wants it to. This could be anything from helping crack (or decipher) passwords, to breaking into websites, to even breaking into other computers.</p><p>Here's the kicker: if the hacker uses your computer to break into something and gets caught, guess who faces the consequences? Well, it was your computer that did the attacking, so it will be your fault, no matter if you knew about the attack or not. Whether it leads to fines or even jail time, you are stuck with a mess trying to prove that you are innocent, all while the hacker carries on with his life and pursues more targets.</p><p>Knowing about the consequences that can come from insecure AP's, there are many things you can do to prevent outsiders from trying to break in. Ideally, you'll use a "Defense in Depth" methodology, which means setting up multiple layers of security to try and deter hackers from breaking in. Now, some of these things discussed will not really add much in the way of security, but it is additional security nonetheless. Hackers love easy targets, so every layer of security you add makes it more difficult for them to break in, and thus acts as a deterrent. That being said, use the following security measures on your personal AP:</p><p>1.)  Hide your SSID broadcast. Your SSID is simply the name of your AP. Without it, hackers will not know the difference between your AP and other ones in the vicinity.</p><p>2.)  Change the name of your SSID. This may not sound like much but, the name can tell a hacker a lot about your AP. Using the default name probably means you are also using the default password, which can easily be found on the internet.</p><p>3.)  Use MAC address filtering. A MAC address is simply an address burned into each wireless card. Using this filtering means that only the entered MAC addresses can access your AP.</p><p>4.)  Enable Encryption. Use the WPA or WPA2 (if available) security mode as well as the AES algorithm. This makes it way more troublesome for hackers to eavesdrop your communications.</p><p>5.)  Use both hardware and software firewalls. Chances are there is a firewall embedded right in your AP, so make sure it is enabled as well as firewalls on the networked computers.</p><p>6.)  Keep learning about new wireless security threats.  Technology keeps evolving, so it is in your best interest to research <a href="http://www.essentialcomputersecurity.com/articles.html" rel="nofollow" target="_new">computer protection articles</a> and other related news sources.</p><p>7.)  Invest in <a href="http://www.essentialcomputersecurity.com/tools.html" rel="nofollow" target="_new">computer security tools</a>.  While it is important to use layered security on your AP, it is even more important to do the same for your computer in case the hacker breaks through.</p><p>When it comes to wireless networks, deterrence can be one of the most powerful things working for you, providing you implement a Defense in Depth methodology like described above. With the large amount of weak and insecure AP's that are live today, layered security will play a vital role in whether or not outsiders try to break into your wireless network.
