Looking back at Apple's Cube, ten years later

<br/><p style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" border="0" class="aligncenter" height="199" src="http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/3054/appleg4cube.jpg" width="279" /></p><br/><br/><br/>The Register has an excellent writeup posted with a look back at Apple's Power Mac G4 Cube (affectionately referred to as "The Cube"), which was released to the public 10 years ago this coming weekend.<br/><br/>At the time, back in 2001, the Cube drew a lot of jeers, mostly from PC enthusiasts who enjoyed making fun of Apple's whimsical and somewhat pretentious designs. For a number of different reasons, the Cube never really took off in the way that the iMac or, later, the iPhone did. Nevertheless, the Cube has its followers, and the idea -- a powerful computer put into a form very different than anything else seen at the time -- remains intriguing even today.<br/><br/>Perhaps that's why even today, modders are trying to push the limits of what the Cube can be. User Marcelo over at CubeOwners.com is actually building an "All Apple 10th Anniversary Cube" right now, which will rock an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, two 100 GB SSD drives, a dual-layer DVD drive; the finished product will even support Mac OS X 10.7 Lion when it's released. That's a spicy meatball of a computer, all squeezed into that same floating box.<br/><br/>We have to be careful not to look back too fondly on the Cube itself -- I used one back in the day and there were some issues with the hardware and the way it all worked, no matter how you felt about the case. But the Cube came right near the end of the Think Different campaign, and in some ways, even before the iAge changed the form of computing completely, the Cube was the last word on what Apple Computers was trying to accomplish with the PC itself.

Google+ design credited to original Macintosh team member Andy Hertzfeld

<br/><p style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" border="0" class="aligncenter" height="117" src="http://img807.imageshack.us/img807/9189/googleplusproject.jpg" width="279" /></p><br/><br/><br/>You may have heard about Google+, the hot new sharing product from Google that went official today, and it sounds cool (<em>sounds</em> cool, but remember how cool Wave and Buzz sounded? Let's just say we're reserving excitement so far). But one exciting thing about the new project is how cool and smooth it looks, and TechCrunch has noted the reason for that look, based on Steven Levy's reporting: it's designed in part by Andy Hertzfeld, one of the members of the original Macintosh team back in the 1980s.<br/><br/>Hertzfeld now works for Google, and supposedly he was let free to exercise his creative influence as he liked on the new Google+ system, creating something for the folks in Mountain View that looks like it might have come from the early days of the Cupertino company.<br/><br/>Hertzfeld even credits some of his influence at Google to Apple's own resurgence lately, saying that Apple's sky-high relevance in the tech and mobile industry may have "had a little bit to do" with his chance to help create Google+.<br/><br/>In other words, when you finally get one of those invites that are starting to float around, and finally log in to the system to see what it is and what it's like, take note of any Macintosh-related influences you might see. Odds are, they're Mr. Hertzfeld's work.

Wiklevoss twins finally settle with Facebook for £48 million

The Winklevoss twins, who have been engrained into the history of Facebook thanks to the movie <em>The Social Network</em>, have finally accepted a $65 million (£48 million) payout from Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook.<br/><br/>This comes after the twins decided to re-ignite their feud with Facebook and Zuckerberg – who they initially claimed took the idea of the social network from them – by trying to undo the settlement they agreed on in 2008.<br/><br/>In April, however, this was turned down by the Supreme Court and while they were going to appeal in May the twins have now made the decision not to.<br/><br/>"After careful consideration [the] appellants no longer oppose issuance of the mandate, and have no objection to vacatur of the stay of issuance of mandate," said the filing.<br/><br/><strong>Taking stock</strong><br/><br/>The Winklevoss case is one of the more interesting in the tech world, given that it stems from Zuckerberg's time at Harvard with the twins.<br/><br/>Originally they accused Zuckerberg of breaking an 'oral contract' with the twins, where he said he would complete work with them on their university social network idea, the Harvard Connection. Instead of completing this website, Zuckerberg went on to make TheFacebook – a social networking site that was originally restricted to Harvard graduates.<br/><br/>One of the reasons not to appeal may be to do with the amount of stock on offer. Windows 8 to include Time Machine-alike History Vault

<P align=center><img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//classifications/computing/software/operating-systems/windows8/historyvault-200-200.jpg"></P><br /><P>Microsoft is apparently integrating a feature called History Vault, which sounds remarkably similar to the well known Mac 'Time Machine' in OSX. </P><br /><P>According to Winrumors, The History Vault functionality allows users to backup files and data automatically using the Shadow Copies function and could also allow users to restore to a particular moment in time. </P><br /><P>That, of course, apes Time Machine, and the feature is likely to start the normal bickering about how much of Windows' UI was in fact brought to market in Mac OS. </P><br /><P><STRONG>Not to worry</STRONG></P><br /><P>Not that this will really matter to PC users who opt for Windows 8, of course, who will merely be glad of the extra functionality, and not worry too much who invented it. </P><br /><P>Although a Windows 8 build has apparently been shipped out to key partners, Microsoft is not ready to talk about Windows 8 just yet, despite TechRadar's badgering. </P><br /><P>We can only hope that the OS can continue the sterling efforts that we saw in Windows 7 – an operating system that appears to have changed consumer opinions of Microsoft.</P>

Witness the Greatest Blunder In The History of Anti-Virus

<P> </P><br /><P>The Groundswell Begins:</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>Stand on the observation deck of the Empire State Building on a quiet, spring evening and you can almost here them whispering.</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>Who? Security analysts and end-users.</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>What are they saying? "Blacklist anti-virus technology is dead."</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>Somewhere in the distance a hacker laughs and a CSO wails. <BR>It doesn't take a lot of searching on the Internet to find articles and reports from analyst firms like Hurwtiz, Gartner, and Yankee clearly detailing the impending demise of traditional anti-virus technology. The evidence is certainly mounting, results damning and sentiment railing against the very solutions that had "protected us" for years! With each new viral exploit and hack it is clear that traditional solutions are neither able to deter nor protect our infrastructures from the proliferation of new attacks. It is no secret that inoculation databases are bloated and growing. McAfee made the prediction that by the year 2008 their databases will contain over 400,000 inoculations. Recent studies by Yankee showed that databases average 9Mb in size causing the scan of a 100,000 file system to take 90 minutes or more, inflicting considerable impact on CPU cycles. Couple this with the explosive growth of disk space and the increase in malware variants - the death knoll rings.</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>These same analysts also go on to say that the answer to the problem is HIPS, Host Intrusion Prevention Systems, also known to many in the industry as "whitelisting". For all intents and purposes, these statements are correct...for the most part. The problem lies in the inclination to take a purist view of effectiveness and use of black versus white technologies. By not fully understanding the underlying strengths and weaknesses of each approach we omit powerful weapons in the war against viral intrusion.</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>Blacklisting: The Weaknesses</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>At the risk of making blatant statements of the obvious, consider what most security professional know to be the Achilles heal(s) of blacklisting.</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>Time</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>Marketing managers call this weakness the Zero Day problem. Blacklisting technology is unfortunately a reactionary solution, meaning that it relies upon the discovery of a new viral exploit before it can provide a deterrent. Once detected, precious time ticks away as computer scientists trap, dissect and characterize the virus in order to release a new inoculation or heuristic. Once developed, more time is accrued waiting for the new cure to be disseminated, deployed and scanned through petabytes of disk space. Time is clearly the friend of hackers, not CSO's as downtime is critically calculated in hours and dollars spent.</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>Sacrificial</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>The often ignored and yet potentially more detrimental aspect of this approach is the necessity of sacrificing a "few" in order to protect the many. New viruses and attack vectors typically don't announce themselves; rather their presence is manifest only once their impact reaches a significant and critical level. This absolute is of no consolation to hundreds or thousands of systems first infected by the unknown intruder. <BR>Expensive</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>As in any business, the cost of creating goods, providing services and maintaining a product is always passed on to the consumer. Constant vigilance has a significant price attached to it! The cost of analyzing billions of data packets, maintaining countless honeypots, and the construction of the actual inoculation is eventually going to reach the consumer's wallet. As the number of hacker exploits rise, so to the costs of deterrence escalate. Simultaneously and in opposition, market dynamics commoditize these same products reducing profit margin and forcing A/V vendors to cut costs thus negatively impacting effectiveness.</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>Cycle Stealing</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>Regardless of the computing power built into a system, blacklisting technology robs systems of not only critical CPU cycles but also heavily impacts disk I/O through scanning. Gains in CPU power, bus speed, and I/O have been mitigated by the growth in virus definition/inoculation databases as well as the data volumes requiring scanning.</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>Whitelisting: The Weaknesses</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>Embracing the premise that whitelisting is the next nirvana can be just as dangerous as believing that blacklisting is dead. Consider the following:</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>Friendly Fire</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>Everyone knows a coworker who simply lacks the experience or savvy to understand the ramifications of downloading everything and anything that comes their way. It is to these individuals that even the most intuitive solutions will be rendered ineffective. Whitelisting solutions, although straight forward in approach, demand the user to have some level of experience as interceptions of new malware usually require direct interaction with the user. That casual user is now faced with a decision, "Is the intercepted file friend or foe?" Depending upon the choice that is made, the result is either a solution or a problem.</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>Provisioning Systems</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>Corporations looking to deploy whitelisting technology are faced with the daunting task of analyzing tens of thousands of systems in order to create both a system specific and an enterprise-wide listing of approved applications. Without this effort, provisioning of certain whitelisting solutions is near impossible. Additionally incomplete analysis can lead to the inadvertent approval of malicious software which is hidden amongst the good. Without a means to identify both, the deployment effort will be both cumbersome and ineffective.</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>Management Overhead</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>If implemented incorrectly, whitelisting approaches may sap precious time, energy, and funding. Whitelist technologies that are based on a client-server architecture rely heavily upon staff to manage and disseminate approved application signatures or push out rules. Both efforts are time intensive and will quickly dip deeply into IT budgets. These implementations are clearly expensive to rollout, costly to maintain, generate lots of inbound help desk activity, and worst of all are vulnerable to denial of service attacks and malicious code injection.</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>The Solution - Think Zebra</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>In reality, the analysts and industry experts are not wrong. Whitelisting is the only path forward but what they neglect to recognize is that whitelisting alone will fail without the presence of a sustained and complimentary blacklisting effort. A far stronger solution will be derived from the combined use of both technologies. <BR>Whitelisting will, by the very nature of what it does, intercept anything new or unknown that comes along regardless of the delivery vector; email, browsing, media etc.</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>Whitelisting addresses Zero day issues by effectively closing the Release day hole. It also provides time for the blacklisting technology to catch up (inoculations, rules or heuristics) which is critical to users who need additional information in order appropriately respond to interceptions. Even if the decision is taken out of the end-users hands and managed centrally, smart decision makers will do research before handing over the keys to the castle. This is one place where the blacklisting technology developed over the last decade excels. But there is more...</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>Traditional blacklisting technology enhances and actually saves whitelisting, by virtue of its ability to clean systems of known malicious code before the systems are whitelisted. Corporations will invariably have "dirty" systems in their midst that must be cleansed. This is clearly a job that traditional whitelisting is ill suited for but one in which blacklisting thrives. Once the network is cleansed, only then can whitelisting perform to its highest expectations and capabilities.</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>Enter the Zebra: An advanced security approach that embraces the best feature functionalities of both. In the coming decade, the greatest hope corporations will have in defending their infrastructures against malware is to embrace a primarily whitelist solution that has the capability of employing a blacklisting technology on demand - a zebra or hybrid anti-malware solution. Not only is this excellent news for companies wishing to protect their investment in blacklisting technology, it allows the industry to move ahead without making the critical mistake of giving hackers the upper hand. By taking a purist's view of blacklisting versus whitelisting we will create opportunity for attackers to undermine both technologies. Without doubt, the greatest mistake the security industry could make. The wise choice is to embrace complimentary technologies to fortify infrastructures on multiple levels. It's also shining a light on racist political parties and trying to out those who are actively censoring the web.</P><br /><P>Wikileaks, for good or bad, is offering up the truth in a way that's not been seen before.</P><br /><P>Its motto is "to publish fact-based stories without fear or favour" and it's a site run by volunteers who seemingly seek nothing but fact.</P><br /><P>This week saw the <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/wikileaks-sparks-diplomatic-crisis-after-250-000-docs-leak-911452">biggest leak yet</A> for the site. A total of 251,287 United States embassy cables were put onto torrents for anyone to download.</P><br /><P>According to Wikileaks, it's "the largest set of confidential documents ever to be released into the public domain."</P><br /><P>The documents go as far back as 1966 and offering them up to the public has seen the US and many other countries go into diplomatic crisis overload.</P><br /><P>But this isn't the first time Wikileaks has managed to deliver documents that have embarrassed whole countries and it certainly won't be the last.</P><br /><P>Below are 8 of the biggest leaks from a website that's only been around for four short years, but has already left a legacy that will last for decades to come.</P><br /><P><STRONG>1. Scientology exposed</STRONG></P><br /><P>It's one of the most secretive religions in the world. Founded by sci-fi author L Ron Hubbard in 1952 and now seen as the religion of choice by the Hollywood elite, the methods of the Church of Scientology have been shrouded in secrecy for a long time.</P><br /><P>Wikileaks changed all this by posting "the collected secret 'bibles' of Scientology" – a whole host of documents that explained the hierarchy within Scientology. </P><br /><P>The religion and its lawyers were not best pleased.</P><br /><P><STRONG>2. BNP membership list released</STRONG></P><br /><P>For some reason, not everybody in the British National Party is happy to have their name associated with the BNP.</P><br /><P>This became apparent when Wikileaks (and other blogs) <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/world-of-tech/entire-bnp-membership-list-leaked-online-486621">published details</A> of every member of the far-right political part, including addresses and what they did for a living.</P><br /><P>The document meant that anybody who downloaded the information could CTRL+F their way to finding out who in their hometown was paying the BNP to pedal its non-immigration stance.</P><br /><P>Teachers were exposed, as were members of the UK police force, which was bad news for the officers – it's illegal to be in the police and support the party. </P><br /><P><STRONG>3. Afghan War logs</STRONG></P><br /><P>The leaking of the <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/wikileaks-releases-92000-secret-afghan-war-files-705613">Afghan War Logs</A> put Wikileaks firmly in the public conscience, mainly due to the US government publicly condemning the information that was made available to the public.</P><br /><P>Talk of torture, the death of civilians and a multitude of cover-ups did not make for light reading, but did show off the true horror of what was seen by many as an unwinnable war.</P><br /><P><STRONG>4. Sarah Palin's email account gets hacked</STRONG></P><br /><P>Palin's latest slip of the tongue made her North Korea's latest fan recently, but it was her outed Yahoo email accounts that caused even more embarrassment <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/web/sarah-palin-must-reveal-personal-emails-475667">back in 2008</A>. </P><br /><P>According to information given to Wikileaks, Palin was using her private Yahoo account to send work messages – a minor faux pas, but one that is strictly forbidden when you're part of the US government.</P><br /><P>Considering she may well be running for President in the near future, we really hope she doesn't make the same mistake again. Or at least updates her personal email to something a bit hipper, like Gmail.</P><br /><P><STRONG><img alt="Wikileaks" src="http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/classifications/computing/internet-and-broadband/images/wikileaks-twitter-420-90.jpg" width="420"></IMG><BR></STRONG></P><br /><P><STRONG>5. Diplomatic crisis</STRONG></P><br /><P>Over <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/wikileaks-sparks-diplomatic-crisis-after-250-000-docs-leak-911452">250,000 documents were</A> released this week that detail what the world already new – government diplomats say one thing to the press and another when they think it is in secret.</P><br /><P>The new documents are yet to be fully sifted but this is a monumental leak at it is the <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/wikileaks-next-release-is-7x-bigger-than-iraq-war-logs-909989">biggest ever of its kind</A>. </P><br /><P>The leaked information includes everything from Arab nations pleading with the US to bomb Iran, China cosying ever closer to North Korea and even stuff about Prince Andrew and Bank of England head honcho Mervin King.</P><br /><P><STRONG>6. Climate 'research'</STRONG></P><br /><P>UK climate researches were put out to dry in 2009 after amore than 1,000 emails and 2,000 documents were leaked about climate change.</P><br /><P>The documents apparently showed that information which didn't fit with current climate change theories (that it is bad) was suppressed.</P><br /><P>Quotes such as: "The fact is that we can't account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can't" appeared in mainstream media and began tarnishing the reputation of a number of scientists.</P><br /><P><STRONG>7. Web censorship lists</STRONG></P><br /><P>Wikileaks found itself on an <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/wikileaks-has-funds-stopped-due-to-blacklisting-901283">Australia blacklist</A> back in May 2009, all because it released details of sites banned by various countries around the world.</P><br /><P>While Wikileaks <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/australian-government-takes-wikileaks-off-banned-website-list-585894">is no longer banned</A> in Australia, its publishing of the Australian Communications and Media Authority's list did cause outcry Down Under.</P><br /><P>The list was interesting because Oz's stance on banned sites was meant to be to be ones that advocated child porn and terrorism. However, Wikileaks found a number of sites banned that did not fall under these banners.</P><br /><P><STRONG>8. Revealing the Bilderberg Group</STRONG></P><br /><P>Ah, the Bilderberg Group – up there with the Stone Cutters in terms of secret organisations you can't help but be interested in.</P><br /><P>While we are not suggesting that the biggest leaders, celebrities and people of influence in the world meeting up once in a while to exchange pleasantries is in the least bit shady, it was interesting to see the Wikileaks posting a number of meeting reports from the group.</P><br /><P>Unfortunately, while this was a monumental leak since it was one of the first times the lid had been lifted on the Bilderbergers, the minutes weren't actually very exciting. This was because all the names had been omitted (even Steve Guttenberg's) and the Bilderberg Group decided to post the information on its own website anyway.</P>

<br />		<p>Social Media has recently become an integral part of our everyday lives, but it's been around since long before Facebook and Twitter. What has changed is that social media is now widely available whereas it used to be limited to those with an in-depth understanding of technology and underground hacker circles.</p><p>Social media has always been about two things: socializing and information gathering. Put the two together and you have a network of information sharing. Part of the lure of social media has to do with "finding stuff out", especially if the information in question is something you're not really supposed to know about (hence things like Facebook stalking). It makes sense, then, that social media started with the telephone in the 1950's. A number of "phone phreak" groups emerged, fascinated with the telephone system and how to infiltrate it. Part of what started the phreak movement was the high cost of making a phone call. Those who had the technological capabilities to do so did whatever they could to find a way around it, hacking into lines they did not have to pay for. They also made a practice of hijacking phone company test lines and conference circuits so that they could hold virtual conferences.</p><p>In the 1970's, a new form of social media emerged. It was called the BBS, or the "bulletin board system". When BBSes first appeared on the scene, they were small servers powered from a personal computer attached to a telephone modem. BBSes worked much the way many forums and blogs do today; people could engage in community discussions, online games, upload and download files, etc. The main problem was that the computer was not a standard household commodity. They were large, expensive, slow and inefficient, thus severely limiting the number of people the actively participated on BBSes.</p><p>In the 1980's, social media was very much an underground phenomenon. There were some legitimate BBSes, but the large majority of them were somehow connected to adult content, pirate software, hacking theories, anarchist movements and virus codes. Because of the nature of much of the online interaction, real names and identities were strictly guarded and the web was not a place for personal information sharing.</p><p>Social media became more "social" in the early 1990's when the world wide web became available to the masses. Site like Compuserve and Prodigy were the first attempts to engage social media with more mainstream culture, but their early iterations were slow and expensive. As the Internet became more readily available, however, and service became faster, chat systems such as the AOL instant messenger began to take hold.</p><p>The next huge trend was Napster, opening up the possibilities of information sharing and extending the possibilities of the type of media that could be exchanged online. Napster made music available online, and for free. Until recording labels and artists began to dispute the distribution of copyrighted material, Napster was the main source for media distribution.</p><p>The next phase of social media came with the emergence of social networking sites. "Friendster" was the first of its kind but was quickly trumped by MySpace and then Facebook. As the Internet became a necessary tool for everyday life, people began to let go of the fear of revealing their real identity, indeed, many have put their full life on display for almost anyone to look at.</p><p>It is hard to imagine a world without social media now. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and the vast blogosphere are not only used for entertainment purposes but have become a major part of business and political interaction. So what's the next step? Witness the Greatest Blunder In The History of Anti-Virus

<br />		<p>The Groundswell Begins:</p><p>Stand on the observation deck of the Empire State Building on a quiet, spring evening and you can almost here them whispering.</p><p>Who?  Security analysts and end-users.</p><p>What are they saying?  "Blacklist anti-virus technology is dead."</p><p>Somewhere in the distance a hacker laughs and a CSO wails.  <br /><br>It doesn't take a lot of searching on the Internet to find articles and reports from analyst firms like Hurwtiz, Gartner, and Yankee clearly detailing the impending demise of traditional anti-virus technology. The evidence is certainly mounting, results damning and sentiment railing against the very solutions that had "protected us" for years! With each new viral exploit and hack it is clear that traditional solutions are neither able to deter nor protect our infrastructures from the proliferation of new attacks. It is no secret that inoculation databases are bloated and growing. McAfee made the prediction that by the year 2008 their databases will contain over 400,000 inoculations.  Recent studies by Yankee showed that databases average 9Mb in size causing the scan of a 100,000 file system to take 90 minutes or more, inflicting considerable impact on CPU cycles.  Couple this with the explosive growth of disk space and the increase in malware variants - the death knoll rings.</p><p>These same analysts also go on to say that the answer to the problem is HIPS, Host Intrusion Prevention Systems, also known to many in the industry as "whitelisting".   For all intents and purposes, these statements are correct...for the most part. The problem lies in the inclination to take a purist view of effectiveness and use of black versus white technologies. By not fully understanding the underlying strengths and weaknesses of each approach we omit powerful weapons in the war against viral intrusion.</p><p>Blacklisting: The Weaknesses</p><p>At the risk of making blatant statements of the obvious, consider what most security professional know to be the Achilles heal(s) of blacklisting.</p><p>Time</p><p>Marketing managers call this weakness the Zero Day problem.  Blacklisting technology is unfortunately a reactionary solution, meaning that it relies upon the discovery of a new viral exploit before it can provide a deterrent. Once detected, precious time ticks away as computer scientists trap, dissect and characterize the virus in order to release a new inoculation or heuristic.  Once developed, more time is accrued waiting for the new cure to be disseminated, deployed and scanned through petabytes of disk space. Time is clearly the friend of hackers, not CSO's as downtime is critically calculated in hours and dollars spent.</p><p>Sacrificial</p><p>The often ignored and yet potentially more detrimental aspect of this approach is the necessity of sacrificing a "few" in order to protect the many.  New viruses and attack vectors typically don't announce themselves; rather their presence is manifest only once their impact reaches a significant and critical level.  This absolute is of no consolation to hundreds or thousands of systems first infected by the unknown intruder.<br /><br>Expensive</p><p>As in any business, the cost of creating goods, providing services and maintaining a product is always passed on to the consumer.  Constant vigilance has a significant price attached to it! The cost of analyzing billions of data packets, maintaining countless honeypots, and the construction of the actual inoculation is eventually going to reach the consumer's wallet.  As the number of hacker exploits rise, so to the costs of deterrence escalate. Simultaneously and in opposition, market dynamics commoditize these same products reducing profit margin and forcing A/V vendors to cut costs thus negatively impacting effectiveness.</p><p>Cycle Stealing</p><p>Regardless of the computing power built into a system, blacklisting technology robs systems of not only critical CPU cycles but also heavily impacts disk I/O through scanning.  Gains in CPU power, bus speed, and I/O have been mitigated by the growth in virus definition/inoculation databases as well as the data volumes requiring scanning.</p><p>Whitelisting: The Weaknesses</p><p>Embracing the premise that whitelisting is the next nirvana can be just as dangerous as believing that blacklisting is dead.   Consider the following:</p><p>Friendly Fire</p><p>Everyone knows a coworker who simply lacks the experience or savvy to understand the ramifications of downloading everything and anything that comes their way. It is to these individuals that even the most intuitive solutions will be rendered ineffective. Whitelisting solutions, although straight forward in approach, demand the user to have some level of experience as interceptions of new malware usually require direct interaction with the user.  That casual user is now faced with a decision, "Is the intercepted file friend or foe?" Depending upon the choice that is made, the result is either a solution or a problem.</p><p>Provisioning Systems</p><p>Corporations looking to deploy whitelisting technology are faced with the daunting task of analyzing tens of thousands of systems in order to create both a system specific and an enterprise-wide listing of approved applications. Without this effort, provisioning of certain whitelisting solutions is near impossible.  Additionally incomplete analysis can lead to the inadvertent approval of malicious software which is hidden amongst the good.  Without a means to identify both, the deployment effort will be both cumbersome and ineffective.</p><p>Management Overhead</p><p>If implemented incorrectly, whitelisting approaches may sap precious time, energy, and funding.  Whitelist technologies that are based on a client-server architecture rely heavily upon staff to manage and disseminate approved application signatures or push out rules. Both efforts are time intensive and will quickly dip deeply into IT budgets. These implementations are clearly expensive to rollout, costly to maintain, generate lots of inbound help desk activity, and worst of all are vulnerable to denial of service attacks and malicious code injection.</p><p>The Solution - Think Zebra</p><p>In reality, the analysts and industry experts are not wrong.  Whitelisting is the only path forward but what they neglect to recognize is that whitelisting alone will fail without the presence of a sustained and complimentary blacklisting effort. A far stronger solution will be derived from the combined use of both technologies. <br /><br>Whitelisting will, by the very nature of what it does, intercept anything new or unknown that comes along regardless of the delivery vector; email, browsing, media etc.</p><p>Whitelisting addresses Zero day issues by effectively closing the Release day hole.  It also provides time for the blacklisting technology to catch up (inoculations, rules or heuristics) which is critical to users who need additional information in order appropriately respond to interceptions.  Even if the decision is taken out of the end-users hands and managed centrally, smart decision makers will do research before handing over the keys to the castle.  This is one place where the blacklisting technology developed over the last decade excels. But there is more...</p><p>Traditional blacklisting technology enhances and actually saves whitelisting, by virtue of its ability to clean systems of known malicious code before the systems are whitelisted.  Corporations will invariably have "dirty" systems in their midst that must be cleansed.  This is clearly a job that traditional whitelisting is ill suited for but one in which blacklisting thrives. Once the network is cleansed, only then can whitelisting perform to its highest expectations and capabilities.</p><p>Enter the Zebra: An advanced security approach that embraces the best feature functionalities of both.  In the coming decade, the greatest hope corporations will have in defending their infrastructures against malware is to embrace a primarily whitelist solution that has the capability of employing a blacklisting technology on demand - a zebra or hybrid anti-malware solution.  Not only is this excellent news for companies wishing to protect their investment in blacklisting technology, it allows the industry to move ahead without making the critical mistake of giving hackers the upper hand. By taking a purist's view of blacklisting versus whitelisting we will create opportunity for attackers to undermine both technologies.  Without doubt, the greatest mistake the security industry could make. The wise choice is to embrace complimentary technologies to fortify infrastructures on multiple levels.
