Google has announced a software update for its UK-bound Google TV service, which incorporates the Android Market and Honeycomb OS for the first time.<br />
Google TV 2.0 opens up the service to third party developers via the Android Market, which means all existing applications can be rewritten for the TV screen and new ones can be created.<br />
With Google TV set to launch in the UK early next year, this opens the possibility for the likes of Spotify, BBC iPlayer, LOVEFiLM and Sky Go to have native applications for the service.<br />
<h4 style="font-size: 1em;">
Numbers will grow</h4>
In a post on the official Google TV blog, the company says: "We are opening up the TV to the creativity of content creators large and small through Android Market.<br />
"Android developers can now bring existing mobile apps or entirely new ones to TV.<br />
"Initially, the number of apps won't be large – apps requiring a touch screen, GPS, or telephony won't show up – but 50 developers have seeded the Market with cool and useful apps for the TV. We're excited to see the number of apps grow."<br />
The new Google TV, which runs a variant of the Android Honeycomb OS seen on tablets like the Motorola Xoom, also has an overhauled, simplified interface which makes finding content easier.<br />
Another big improvement looks to be the YouTube app. Google says it has completely overhauled the way the video sharing portal works on Google TV, with the company also integrating YouTube into the system's content search.<br />
<h4 style="font-size: 1em;">
Google TV: All bets are off</h4>
When Eric Schmidt announced Google TV would be coming to the UK, many felt that the horse had already bolted, following a disappointing reception in the US due to the lack of content available.<br />
With news that all content providers, as well as game developers can now push their wares using the service, it makes the Google TV proposition an entirely different and much more interesting one.<br />

From one end of IFA 2011 to the other, the hottest tech trend has undoubtedly been the rise and rise of internet-connected TVs in general and Smart TVs in particular.</div>

Proof of that comes in the announcement on Thursday that LG, Philips and Sharp were teaming up to promote an open standard for TV apps that aims to emulate the success of smartphone and tablets appsm, with rival TV makers and application developers being encouraged to climb on board.</div>
<div style="color: #444444; font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.5; margin-bottom: 24px;">
The reasons why TV makers would want to do so are clear: first, 3D is fast becoming the default for new TVs available in the shops and so TV makers will soon need something new to sell; it could enable them to claim back some of the home entertainment territory lost to PC makers in recent years; and, presumably, they stand to make a whole chunk of change on imposing Apple-style levies on developers who want to get their apps on TVs.</div>

Open standards</h4>

The new Smart TV standard will be based on other open standards such as HTML5, CE-HTML and HbbTV that will enable application developers to reduce the number of platforms they have to support and so speed up application development - or at least that's the hope.</div>

The potential benefits to all of us as TV viewers is that we'll be able enjoy a more relaxing interactive, TV-centric experience than you can enjoy with laptops and smartphones already, whether that's chatting to friends on Facebook or Twitter, catching up with your TV viewing using services like BBC iPlayer or even streaming movies or playing multi-player games.</div>

Can't we all just get along?</h4>

Sony, Panasonic, Samsung and Toshiba have yet to sign up to the Smart TV standard, making them potentially very formidable opponents. Sony, in particular, is very fond of promoting its own proprietary standards, although it's arguably had a lot more losers than winners in recent times.</div>

Another potential problem is what happens to the applications themselves: are we prepared to see our internet-connected TVs infested with malware brought by unfettered access to an Android-style marketplace? Or will TV makers seek to limit our freedom to choose and use the apps we want by creating an Apple-style walled garden?</div>

Charles Darwin's personal library is being digitised and put online by Cambridge University.<br/><br/>The digitisation includes all of Darwin's own annotations and notes in the margins, with 330 of the most heavily annotated books already posted online for universal access.<br/><br/>Aside from making the works available to everyone everywhere, what's really impressive about the online library is that you can actually search for a keyword within Darwin's annotations, rather than trawl through hundreds of thousands of pages for his relevant thoughts.<br/><br/><strong>Digital Darwinism<br/></strong><br/><br/>Quite the bibliophile, Darwin had over 1480 books in his personal library, of which 730 have comprehensive notes scribbled in the margins; all of these annotated books will eventually end up in the online database.<br/><br/>University librarian Anne Jarvis classes these annotations as important as Darwin's letters and manuscripts: "The Darwin collections are among the most important and popular held within Cambridge University Library.<br/><br/>"While there has been much focus on his manuscripts and correspondence, his library hasn't always received the attention it deserves – for it is as he engaged with the ideas and theories of others that his own thinking evolved."<br/><br/>It's been quite a good week for antiquated books and written works; yesterday the British Library also announced a deal with Google which will see a number of 18 and 19th century works made scanned and added to the Google Books library.<br/><br/><a href="http://da.feedsportal.com/r/106215389713/u/49/f/9809/c/669/s/160e8b11/a2.htm"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/9877/13045304.gif" /></a><img alt="" height="1" src="http://img577.imageshack.us/img577/3167/77769859.gif" width="1" />

Wiklevoss twins finally settle with Facebook for £48 million

The Winklevoss twins, who have been engrained into the history of Facebook thanks to the movie <em>The Social Network</em>, have finally accepted a $65 million (£48 million) payout from Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook.<br/><br/>This comes after the twins decided to re-ignite their feud with Facebook and Zuckerberg – who they initially claimed took the idea of the social network from them – by trying to undo the settlement they agreed on in 2008.<br/><br/>In April, however, this was turned down by the Supreme Court and while they were going to appeal in May the twins have now made the decision not to.<br/><br/>"After careful consideration [the] appellants no longer oppose issuance of the mandate, and have no objection to vacatur of the stay of issuance of mandate," said the filing.<br/><br/><strong>Taking stock</strong><br/><br/>The Winklevoss case is one of the more interesting in the tech world, given that it stems from Zuckerberg's time at Harvard with the twins.<br/><br/>Originally they accused Zuckerberg of breaking an 'oral contract' with the twins, where he said he would complete work with them on their university social network idea, the Harvard Connection. Well, if you're an outlaw, you still won't like them, but for the rest of us law-abiding types, London's Metropolitan Police has a comforting stat to share: almost six crimes a day are being resolved with the help of CCTV footage. It's being used primarily to aid the identification of perps on the run, and the number of suspects identified as a result has gone up to 2,512 this year. There <i>is</i> a bright light for criminals, however, as the Met admits digital recordings aren't kept around as long as VHS ones used to be, meaning that if you slip the dragnet once, you'll probably be alright. So good news for everyone!<br />
