Think a Virus Scanner is Enough? Learn Why You Also Need Spyware Protection

Most people do not want viruses, so they get a virus scanner to catch, protect, and solve those problems. While this is a good practice, it's only half protecting your system. There is something else called spyware that you as a user needs to deal with.Just like you need a virus scanner, you also need to have a spyware scanner. Many of these are free although there are paid ones that do work better at times. Sometimes these are called adware protection and malware scanners as well. What can spyware do to your system? If you have spyware on your system, just as the name implies, it can spy on you. One type of spyware that is the most common is called a keylogger. This will log your keystrokes on your keyboard. This means that when you have logins and passwords that you want to remain safe, a keylogger will steal this information meaning your accounts could be hacked. For some accounts this doesn't matter as much, but if it's your banking account or PayPal, spyware could end up costing you money.Other types of spyware violate your privacy. These programs watch what you do on your computer. Everything that you are doing, opening, visiting online, and other tasks are being logged. If you want to keep your privacy, you need to get rid of these spyware programs.Just like viruses, new spyware is created every week. It's very important to keep the software protection updated at least once a week to have protection from the latest types of spyware. The first time you run this scan do a full system scan as there is probably quite a bit of spyware that you already have. If there is a safe mode option, use that one as it will get more off your system than in a normal boot into Windows.

Don't lie, it's a place that survives in only two places: your mind, and NBC's studios. The only "Pawnee" in proximity of the Hoosier State lies in Illinois, but it's cool, we can still pretend. After hearing that Think was planning to hawk its City electric vehicle in the Big Apple this year, it looks as if Indiana's government will actually be first to acquire it. Fitting, though, given how Think's primarily manufacturing facility is parked in Elkhart, IN. The first 15 City EVs -- described by the company as "all-electric, zero-emission cars designed in Scandinavia for fleet applications and urban commuters" -- have hit the ground running, delivered to the Department of Administration to be used principally by the Department of Natural Resources in the state's park system. Naturally, Ron Swanson was at the ribbon-cutting ceremony with a mind to swipe one for his own personal use, but once he learned of Think's plans to finally roll out retail distribution in select US cities in the second half of 2011, his conscience got the better of him. Phew.

What Are Viruses and Worms, and Why You May Be At Risk, Even If You Think You're Safe

Everybody has heard of computer viruses and worms - they're all over the news these days, but many people don't really understand what they are, or how to avoid them.Basically, a virus or a worm is a program which is able to copy itself and spread from computer to computer. Kind of like a virus in a person, which gets one person sick, then that person passes it on to others, and they get sick too. Hence the name virus. The difference between a worm and a virus is that a virus needs a person to open it to start it running and to allow it to infect your computer (for example, by opening an email attachment that hasn't been scanned for viruses) A worm on the other hand, infect a computer and spread to other computers again and again without you clicking a single thing.Once a worm or a virus is on your computer, it can do a lot of different things. Until fairly recently, viruses (from now on, just assume that any time I say viruses, that I mean both viruses and worms, because they're very similar and it'll save time) Until recently, viruses were usually very damaging - they would delete files, completely erase hard drives, or sometimes even ruin a computers' motherboard by infecting a specific chip on the motherboard. (A motherboard, also called a "main logic board", is the main circuit board in the computer, so it's kind of like your central nervous system) When the software in the chip was replaced, you suddenly couldn't boot the computer, even with a clean hard drive.Viruses were so damaging because the virus writers mainly wrote them to get their name known, and the bigger the damage, the more infamous they were. These days, many viruses can lurk on your computer without you even knowing it, because the virus writers have different agendas. For example, there are millions of computers out there which are infected with viruses that cause the computers to send out spam (junk mail), and the computer owner has no idea this is happening. These days, virus writers want to make money, and so to allow the virus to spread the most, the infected computers need to keep working. Because of this, the computer may slow down some, but nothing major seems to have gone wrong. But in reality, the computer user has had the wool pulled over their eyes and they just keep clicking away innocently while their computer silently sends out millions of junk emails.By some estimates, there are over 100,000 viruses which specifically infect Windows PCs. These specific viruses cannot infect Linux or Unix machines, or Macs. There is literally one virus (at the time I'm recording this) which can infect some Macs running OS X, but it is pretty much what they call a "concept virus" which isn't likely to spread "in the wild."So if you use a Mac, you are a lot safer than your friends who use Windows. But just because there aren't any Mac viruses now, doesn't mean someone won't develop one in the future. It is harder to do this for a Mac than it is to do for a Windows machine, because of the way the Mac software is designed, but it's hardly impossible. On the other hand, Symantec (who makes Norton Antivirus) estimates that 91% (yes, that's ninety-one percent) of Windows computers are infected with some malicious software. Although this estimate includes adware and spyware (which I cover in a different chapter of this report) that's still an incredibly high number. There are a couple of reasons for why viruses and other "malware" infect Windows machines so often. One reason is exposure - there are many times more computers running Windows than any other operating system, so they present a bigger target. But remember, just because a lot of people use something, doesn't mean it's the best option. Fast food is very very popular, but I don't think you could really say it's the best quality food.Speaking of food, if you know your history, then you may have heard of the Irish Potato Famine that killed hundreds of thousands of people back in the 1800s.This happened because of something called a "monoculture." In plain English, what that means is, the Irish used potatoes as the core of their diet - everybody ate them, and everybody grew them. And they were all growing one just one breed of potato. What does that have to do with computers, you might be wondering.Well, because they were only growing one type of potato, when a disease came along, it spread like wildfire, and killed off all of the potatoes, since they were all of the same type, and all had the same weakness to this disease. This is just like how most people are using Windows, which creates something called a "computing monoculture." So that latest virus or worm, spreads all over the world sometimes in a matter of hours, because most computers are vulnerable.Does that make sense? And aside from that, Windows has so many security flaws (which mostly happen because of programming mistakes made by Microsoft) that they're discovering dozens and dozens more of these critical flaws every year. Any one of these critical flaws can allow anyone with a little knowledge to take control of your computer and use it any way they want. Or they can write a program (a virus) which does the same thing. For each of these flaws, you must install the update or "patch," which fixes the flaw, or you run the risk of your computer being hacked or infected.Mac OS X in contrast to Windows, has had some of it's own security flaws in the last few years, but as yet we haven't seen a single real threat to them. Other operating systems such as Linux have similar track records. It is just as important on these computers to install any security updates, too, just in case.Bottom line is, if you're running Windows it is absolutely essential that not only do you have antivirus software installed, but you must make sure your one-year subscription hasn't expired, and the software is updated every day. Your computer may have antivirus software installed, but if the subscription has expired, it's not protecting you!I see this all the time -- people with Dells, HPs, or most of the big brand names will find their computer came with Norton or McAfee antivirus, but it only works for 90 days before the subscription expires. People get prompted to renew their subscription, but they don't do it.I have been called by so many people, especially in the last few years, who have had me clean their systems up for them. In most cases I've found they either never put antivirus software on their PCs, or had ignored the repeated warnings from Norton or McAfee telling them their subscription had expired. In many of those cases, I discovered a computer that barely worked anymore (or was so slow it literally took 10-20 minutes before you could start using it after you turned it on). In these situations I'm faced with either wiping their computer clean, and spending hours reinstalling Windows and their various programs (assuming they even had all their disks), etc., or spending hours scanning and cleaning up the computer with a variety of programs just to get them working again. Either way it takes time and effort to recover from a bad virus infection.Hundreds of dollars, and hours, days, or weeks of aggravation, just because they didn't spend $40-$50 for antivirus software and take a few minutes to install it.Another critical mistake people make with their antivirus software, is assuming that because Norton Antivirus and McAfee Antivirus are two of the best known, and most popular programs, that they are also the best ones. This turns out not to be true. In fact, just the opposite.A recent study by CERT, the Computer Emergency Response Team (one of the world's leading computer security organizations) revealed that the most popular antivirus programs, which include Norton and McAfee, missed 80% of new malicious software! So in other words, 80% of the time, those programs are useless when trying protecting your computer! So you're much better off with a less-known, but high quality program like Kaspersky Internet Security, which has been consistently rated as one of the best, with a success rate of over 99% effective. It's also a really good deal as you get a license to use it on 3 computers for less than the price of Symantec Antivirus (Norton) on one PC.Aside from having effective antivirus software, which is current and up-to-date, you also need to be getting your security updates installed as soon as they come out.On Windows computers, this is called Windows Update, and on Macs this is called Software Update. Both Macs and Windows users (if you have Windows XP service pack 2 installed or any newer version of Windows) probably have their computer checking for these updates automatically, but they may not get installed unless you follow the steps when the computer tells you there are updates available.Hopefully these tips will help you keep yourself safe. You Think a Firewall and Anti-Virus Are Enough?

Why do I care? I am not worth hacking! What precautions have you taken to ensure the security of your personal computer or your company's network? Holland IT, a computer network security firm, offers innovative solutions to the challenges of securing your data, your network, your money and your identity. You think a firewall and anti-virus are enough? Think again! Anti-virus and a firewall are just the tip of the iceberg! If you have seen the AOL advertisements on television, you know there are worse things than your hard drive making a sound like a yeti! On a personal level, if you are even slightly concerned about a third party obtaining anything on your computer, then your first step is to take a moment and figure out how vulnerable you are. The same basic process applies to a corporate network.Keep in mind that being connected to the Internet is a bit like stumbling down a dark alley wearing a shiny gold Rolex while you are drunk. Rather dangerous - who knows what is around the next corner! You may end up on the Channel 5 news. Would you risk it, considering how hard you've worked on building your company? You have a firewall (maybe many!)? Sure, better than no firewall. But you do have holes in it, right? I mean, your e-mail goes through it, you can surf the Web through it, send files right through it. Are any of your people using Instant Messenger? FTP? SSH? Any MP3 servers, WEB servers, WEB e-mail servers anywhere in your network? Your wireless data is encrypted, right? Every vulnerability in every operating system or program you have on every computer in your infrastructure has been patched, right?Think "proactive" to avoid attack or extortionAt the risk of sounding overly dramatic, computer network security has to be more proactive and not reactive. In a recent survey, Orange County was well below the national average in secure computer network standards. Public companies have no choice but to comply with Sarbanes-Oxley, but what about the privately held companies? Are their systems immune to hackers, worms, viruses, spam and spyware? System security is a highly complicated subject - no one knows everything, especially overworked, stressed out IT persons! But with the appropriate tools and the right procedures and safeguards in place, a hacker may select an easier target to attack or a less proactive company for extortion.Home computer vulnerabilitiesSome individuals are worth hacking, although less so than companies. Thieves can use your connection for criminal activities, send spam, store copyrighted data for illegal distribution, steal your identity or money, and wreak havoc on your credit rating. If you have wireless in your house or home office, your information is easily captured. If you have any connection to the Internet, you can be hacked. If it's broadband, DSL or cable, you can be hacked at any time, even when you are sleeping or not home, and your connection can be abused - firewall or no firewall. If I were a spammer, I wouldn't use my own connection - I would "borrow" yours!Impact on your businessIf your company relies on the Internet for business, just imagine the impact if your connection is locked up. Every time you switch it off and then back on, it's still locked up! It's called a DDOS (denial of service) attack - what are you going to do about it?Has someone published vulnerabilities to gain access to your systems? A resounding "Yes!" Welcome to the World Wide Web, where all information is available if you know where to look. Although real hack attacks are actually rare, they do happen. The most common hacks are from within, ex-employees or employees with something on the side, but the net result to your business is the same. Why do most hacks go unreported? How would your customers feel if they knew your network was compromised? Anyone with money or confidential information in his or her systems is a possible target. In 2004, hackers got away with an estimated $800 million and that is surely only a fraction of the true amount. There are even worse things than theft to deal with. Former CIA Director George J. Tenet said recently, "Telecommunications -and specifically the Internet - is a back door through which terrorists and other enemies of the United States could attack the country, even though great strides have been made in securing the physical infrastructure. The Internet represents a potential. Achilles heel for our financial stability and physical security if the networks we are creating are not protected." (Washington Times) And we have not even talked about viruses, worms or spyware.Initial course of actionA recommend initial course of action would be for everyone to take time to download the FBI CSI file on Computer Crime from http://www.fbi.gov, study it, and take a look at what other companies are doing to secure their infrastructure. Maybe you can wait; maybe your infrastructure will be okay. But think about why you have car insurance. If it were legal not to have it, would you do without insurance? Attacks and ruined computer networks are a very real problem that cannot be ignored. The solutions are out there - talk to an expert today.SIDEBAR SIDEBAR ... if you are even slightly concerned about a third party obtaining anything on your computer, then your first step is to take a moment and figure out how vulnerable you are.At the risk of sounding overly dramatic, computer network security has to be more proactive and not reactive. Identity Theft - It's Not What You Think

By this time in 2007 it should be clear to just about everyone that identity theft is a real and growing problem throughout the world, but especially here in the United States where there is so much affluence (and of course available credit). The Federal Trade Commission reports that for the 5th year in a row identity theft topped the list of consumer complaints. In this article we will explore what identity theft is, how it is most commonly perpetrated, and how big of a threat it really is to the average consumer.Credit Card Fraud versus Identity TheftWhen someone illegally obtains your credit card information and uses it then that is credit card fraud. It is not identity theft in the purest sense but when the government estimates the number of identity theft victims and the financial impact of identity theft it generally includes this number. The term most commonly used now is Identity Fraud which broadens the scope to include credit card fraud. In 2006 the total estimated cost of identity fraud was $56.6 billion, up from $54.4 billion in 2005. Credit card fraud accounts for approximately 26% of identity theft. The balance of identity theft is comprised mostly of new account identity theft, where your personal information is compromised to the point where the thief is able to establish new accounts (bank, credit card, utilities) in your name. This type of theft can have a devastating effect on an individual's life and can take years and thousands of dollars to clean up and restore your good name. Some individuals never recover from this type of identity theft.Identity Theft Thieves Most people think of identity theft thieves as individuals or small groups working together, digging through trash or stealing mail. While these are legitimate methods used by thieves, there is also a much broader identity theft market that get little media attention. And that is from computer data breaches. The amount of personal information compromised from computer breaches in this country over the last two years is staggering. In 2005 there were 151 major data breaches potentially compromising the personal information of 57.7 million individuals. In 2006 there were 327 data breaches totalling 48.8 million records. That's over 100 million records of various types of personal information floating around. As a result an entire black market industry has developed for these stolen records. This worldwide criminal identity theft marketplace is mature and is very structured. The players come from all over the world, but most of the Web sites where they meet are run from computer servers offshore or overseas, with many in the former Soviet Union, making them difficult to police. Credit cards, bank account numbers, Social Security numbers, and other personal data are commonly traded and sold in huge numbers. There are buyers and sellers, intermediaries, service industries, and even tutorials. The Next Big Threat? And the assault is continuing. Gary Miliefsky, a founding member of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and chief technology officer of network security firm NetClarity, stated that Malware (an umbrella term used to a variety of hostile in intrusive program codes) attacks on personal computers are increasing at an unprecedented rate by organized criminals. "Malware writers are attacking your computer like they never have before," says Miliefsky. "Plain viruses are declining, and new attacks are taking advantage of a hole in an operating system or browser to plant Trojan viruses. As the business of online identity theft has continued to grow: malware is now an $8 billion industry, according to the FBI.Preventing Identity TheftCurrently the average consumer has a 1 in 7 chance of becoming an identity theft victim. Identity theft thieves are attacking us on multiple fronts in their unrelenting quest for our personal information. Our trash cans are being rifled through, our mail is being taken, corporate computers are being hacked and now even our own personal computers are under attack. The task of insuring the safety of our personal information should not be taken lightly. A method of tracking and monitoring your credit is crucial to insure that no one can create a personal financial and credit disaster through identity theft. Security/Privacy for Home VoIP - Don't Just Think VoIP

Much disussion has centred around the security and privacy aspects of VoIP as well as significant issues in relation to emergency calls. This article will focus on the importance of considering the wider implications of security in the context of utilsing VoIP.There are numerous security concerns with VoIP with two common ones being the privacy aspect of eavesdropping in on a conversation and a second being the hacking into and use of a VoIP users account. It is arguable that focus in relation to security aspects of VoIP technology has and continues to be improved and addressed. Even if this is not the case are there bigger holes elsewhere? Most VoIP users are operating on something other than a dedicated VoIP computer, network, broadband link. That is they are using an existing computer and everything that goes with and on it as well as a broadband link utilized for general internet purposes. Thus the same risks and concerns in relation to security of personal computers and data transmissions therefrom is extremely relevant to the VoIP world. This is especially relevant if using software applications as a telephone rather than a standard telephone through an Analog Telephone Adaptor (ATA).In the case of software on a home PC it would therefore be vital to secure the PC and operating system to the highest level possible by use of firewall(s) and anti virus software for starters. This should be obvious but how many users don't keep their firewall and anti virus software updated along with the operating system as new security exploitations are encountered and security upgrades supplied?Additionally consider all things wireless. Anything wireless means a radiocommunications transmitter at the departure point and a receiver at the other allowing the possibility of interception somewhere inbetween. For example users of a Wireless LAN such as one compliant with the 802.11 standard would need to consider security in relation to the wireless or radiocommunication transmission aspect.Whilst things have come a long way from the days of non encrypted cordless phones and analog mobile phones that could be intercepted on a commercially available scanning receiver, along with Dual Tone Multi Frequency (DTMF) decoders meaning not only could conversations be listened in on but PINs, account numbers etc entered via the keypad could be decoded, you do not want to be the car with the mobile phone visible on the front seat or the house with the door or window left unlocked.By examining, assessing and addressing the basic security aspects in relation to PC/server setup along with increasing security for the Voice Over Internet Protocol technology, it is hoped that the analogy could be drawn that so many others are more vulnerable that you will either go unnoticed or not be targeted due to the availability of much easier and worthwhile targets.SummaryWhilst many questions still surround security of certain aspects of VoIP usage, there are other basic security considerations which if left unaddressed will definitely leave the user vulnerable in not only the VoIP sense but with all data storage and transmission aspects.
