Skype video calls for iPhone now available

Skype has launched its video-calling service for the Apple iPhone, a week earlier than many expected – with more announcements from the VoIP specialist due at CES 2011 in Las Vegas early next month. So if you have an iPhone 4 and want to make Skype-to-Skype video calls with others (either on their iPhones or PCs/Macs) then you can grab the latest version of Skype's iOS app from iTunes today. The video calling app will work over Wi-Fi or 3G, although initial tests show that the video quality and stuttering on 3G video calls are somewhat compromised when compared with the smooth flowing moving images on Wi-Fi. Significantly better video-calls "Video calling significantly enhances the user experience of Skype for iPhone, which is one of the top five free iPhone apps in 2010 according to Apple," said the company. "Now, users can make and receive free Skype-to-Skype calls, call mobiles and landlines around the world at very low rates, and now share more moments together with video on Skype for iPhone," The new Skype for iPhone app will also work with the with the iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4th generation with iOS 4.0 or above – although obviously only allowing the caller to send video from the single camera on the back of the phone or iPod in those cases. iPod touch 3rd generation and iPad will both be able to receive video calls, but not send them, due to the lack of video-shooting capabilities on those devices. Skype from phone to PC Most excitingly, for many Skype users, video calls can now be made between your PC or Mac laptop or desktop and your iOS device. Your desktop client will need to be Skype for Windows 4.2 or above (or Skype for Mac 2.8 and above) – plus the app will also work with other desktop clients and devices such as Skype for Linux and the Asus-manufactured standalone Skype Videophone. The Skype for iPhone application is freely available to download from the Apple App Store – for more head to www.skype.com/go/iphone

IBM foresees 3D holographic mobile calls by 2015

The latest research from computing giant IBM claims that consumers should be able to buy mobile phones by 2015 that will project small 3D holographic images of the person they are calling. The latest future forecasting comes straight out of International Business Machines' Almaden Research Center campus in the Santa Teresa Hills of San Jose, California. IBM also claims that, in addition to 3D holographic mobile calls, our mobile tablet PCs and laptops will be able to be powered by kinetic energy. Annual future-gazing list Every year the New York-based company asks its 3000 researchers to find five ideas which they think will become entrenched over the next five years. 3D holographic mobile conversations are at the top of the 2010 list of predictions from IBM. "These are all stretch goals, and that's good," Discern analyst Paul Saffo. "In an era when pessimism is the new black, a little dose of technological optimism is not a bad thing. "[IBM] has continued to do research when all the other grand research organizations are gone," added Saffo. IBM invested $5.8 billion in research and development last year. "All this demonstrates a real culture of innovation at IBM and willingness to devote itself to solving some of the world's biggest problems," said Josephine Cheng, a vice president at IBM's Almaden lab. Source

Tesco offers free international calls over Christmas

Tesco has announced that it is offering free calls this Christmas to a number of oversees destinations. As of 25 December, Tesco will allow you to call a landline for free for 10 minutes to countries as far-ranging as Sri Lanka and Iraq. The news comes after the shopping giant surveyed 2,000 people and found that one in six of us will be home alone at Christmas. Call of duty While it didn't exactly do Kevin McCallister any harm, the idea of being alone at Christmas has meant that Tesco, in a moment of altruism and a possible chance you will continue to use its calling cards, wants people to get in contact over Xmas for free. The way you can get the free calls is through the Tesco International Calling Card. Be warned, though, if you go over the ten minutes then you will be charged at the standard rate and the offer is only open on Christmas day. For information on the 50 countries you can call, goto www.tescocallingcard.com for more details.

UK government calls for block on internet porn

The UK government has called for a block on internet porn, in an attempt to protect British kids from seeing inappropriate content online. In what is sure to be seen as a misguided PR exercise, Communications minister Ed Vaizey told The Sunday Times that he wanted to protect children from being exposed to porn by the content being blocked by default. Any internet users that wanted to access XXX websites would then have to opt-in via their internet service provider. Technological barriers However, the technological barriers to putting such an 'opt-in' plan into practise don't seem to have been considered in a great amount of depth. "This is a very serious matter. I think its very important that it's the ISPs that come up with solutions to protect children," said Vaizey. "I'm hoping they will get their acts together so we don't have to legislate, but we are keeping an eye on the situation and we will have a new communications bill in the next couple of years." Andrew Heaney, executive director of strategy and regulation for UK ISP TalkTalk's told The Sunday Times: "Our objective was not to do what the politicians want us but to do what is right for our customers. If other companies aren't going to do it of their own volition, then maybe they should be leant on." A Virgin Media spokesperson added: "We already have an opt-in approach on mobiles. We're able to block sites, so it would be possible to do the same on the internet. It is just about finding the right approach." While a BT spokesperson was a little less sanguine about the ease of introducing such a system for its broadband customers, adding: "There are many legal, consumer rights and technical issues that would need to be considered before any new web blocking policy was developed. "BT has provided customers with a content blocking system since 2004 which targets websites on a list compiled by the Internet Watch Foundation, an accredited association set up by the internet industry. Sites on the list contain images of child sexual abuse, which are illegal to view in the UK, under the 1978 Child Protection Act." No mention of the importance of basic well-considered parenting seems to have been considered in the context of these pie-in-the-sky plans to censor access to porn to UK broadband consumers.

Don't lie, it's a place that survives in only two places: your mind, and NBC's studios. The only "Pawnee" in proximity of the Hoosier State lies in Illinois, but it's cool, we can still pretend. After hearing that Think was planning to hawk its City electric vehicle in the Big Apple this year, it looks as if Indiana's government will actually be first to acquire it. Fitting, though, given how Think's primarily manufacturing facility is parked in Elkhart, IN. The first 15 City EVs -- described by the company as "all-electric, zero-emission cars designed in Scandinavia for fleet applications and urban commuters" -- have hit the ground running, delivered to the Department of Administration to be used principally by the Department of Natural Resources in the state's park system. Naturally, Ron Swanson was at the ribbon-cutting ceremony with a mind to swipe one for his own personal use, but once he learned of Think's plans to finally roll out retail distribution in select US cities in the second half of 2011, his conscience got the better of him. Phew.

Martha Lane Fox calls for Govt tech 'revolution'

Martha Lane Fox, the UK's 'digital champion', has called for a 'revolution' in the way the Government works online. Lane Fox outlines how the Government can save money by shifting more of its affairs online, while improving the level of service on offer to the public. The digital champion has said that the Directgov website should be redesigned in order to improve the ease of access to Government services and to make it easier for Brits to make payments online. £2 billion savings If the Government was able to move half of its contacts with the public online, it could make savings of over £2 billion a year, claims Lane Fox. "Government should take advantage of the more open, agile and cheaper digital technologies to deliver simpler and more effective digital services to users, particularly to disadvantaged groups who are some of the heaviest users of government services," said Ms Lane Fox. "But this is just the beginning. The Government must look at more dramatic measures — such as syndicating and opening up information and services to other organisations — to be able to offer genuine improvements to consumers, taxpayers, business and citizens in the UK." Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude added: "There is no excuse for not making quality online services the default solution for people needing Government services. "This does not mean we will abandon groups that are less likely to access the internet. We recognise that we cannot leave anyone behind. Every single government service must be available to everyone — no matter if they are online or not."

Windows Live team excited by Kinect's video calls

Microsoft is celebrating the launch of Kinect, but the Xbox 360 team is not the only one in buoyant mood, with the Windows Live team also hoping that the video call functionality of the new arrival will be popular. Video Kinect allows people to use their shiny new Kinect to video chat with their messenger friends – even if they only have a more typical web cam. "At Windows Live, we're very excited…because it gives our more than 300 million Messenger users worldwide a new way to stay connected with their Messenger friends," blogged Piero Serra. At launch"At launch, Xbox LIVE Gold members will be able to video chat with friends from their TVs using the new Video Kinect feature," he continued "And not only can you video chat from Xbox to Xbox, you can also video chat with your Messenger friends and family from your TV set to their PC or Mac with a webcam."The Kinect video chat also offers some enhanced (and some would say eerie) functionality."Kinect's new smart cameras do a lot more than an ordinary computer webcam, automatically panning, zooming, and physically tilting up and down to follow you around the room while you chat," added Serra "And if another person walks into the viewing area, the camera automatically reframes the shot to fit everyone in."
