You Think a Firewall and Anti-Virus Are Enough?

Why do I care? I am not worth hacking! What precautions have you taken to ensure the security of your personal computer or your company's network? Holland IT, a computer network security firm, offers innovative solutions to the challenges of securing your data, your network, your money and your identity. You think a firewall and anti-virus are enough? Think again! Anti-virus and a firewall are just the tip of the iceberg! If you have seen the AOL advertisements on television, you know there are worse things than your hard drive making a sound like a yeti! On a personal level, if you are even slightly concerned about a third party obtaining anything on your computer, then your first step is to take a moment and figure out how vulnerable you are. The same basic process applies to a corporate network.Keep in mind that being connected to the Internet is a bit like stumbling down a dark alley wearing a shiny gold Rolex while you are drunk. Rather dangerous - who knows what is around the next corner! You may end up on the Channel 5 news. Would you risk it, considering how hard you've worked on building your company? You have a firewall (maybe many!)? Sure, better than no firewall. But you do have holes in it, right? I mean, your e-mail goes through it, you can surf the Web through it, send files right through it. Are any of your people using Instant Messenger? FTP? SSH? Any MP3 servers, WEB servers, WEB e-mail servers anywhere in your network? Your wireless data is encrypted, right? Every vulnerability in every operating system or program you have on every computer in your infrastructure has been patched, right?Think "proactive" to avoid attack or extortionAt the risk of sounding overly dramatic, computer network security has to be more proactive and not reactive. In a recent survey, Orange County was well below the national average in secure computer network standards. Public companies have no choice but to comply with Sarbanes-Oxley, but what about the privately held companies? Are their systems immune to hackers, worms, viruses, spam and spyware? System security is a highly complicated subject - no one knows everything, especially overworked, stressed out IT persons! But with the appropriate tools and the right procedures and safeguards in place, a hacker may select an easier target to attack or a less proactive company for extortion.Home computer vulnerabilitiesSome individuals are worth hacking, although less so than companies. Thieves can use your connection for criminal activities, send spam, store copyrighted data for illegal distribution, steal your identity or money, and wreak havoc on your credit rating. If you have wireless in your house or home office, your information is easily captured. If you have any connection to the Internet, you can be hacked. If it's broadband, DSL or cable, you can be hacked at any time, even when you are sleeping or not home, and your connection can be abused - firewall or no firewall. If I were a spammer, I wouldn't use my own connection - I would "borrow" yours!Impact on your businessIf your company relies on the Internet for business, just imagine the impact if your connection is locked up. Every time you switch it off and then back on, it's still locked up! It's called a DDOS (denial of service) attack - what are you going to do about it?Has someone published vulnerabilities to gain access to your systems? A resounding "Yes!" Welcome to the World Wide Web, where all information is available if you know where to look. Although real hack attacks are actually rare, they do happen. The most common hacks are from within, ex-employees or employees with something on the side, but the net result to your business is the same. Why do most hacks go unreported? How would your customers feel if they knew your network was compromised? Anyone with money or confidential information in his or her systems is a possible target. In 2004, hackers got away with an estimated $800 million and that is surely only a fraction of the true amount. There are even worse things than theft to deal with. Former CIA Director George J. Tenet said recently, "Telecommunications -and specifically the Internet - is a back door through which terrorists and other enemies of the United States could attack the country, even though great strides have been made in securing the physical infrastructure. The Internet represents a potential. Achilles heel for our financial stability and physical security if the networks we are creating are not protected." (Washington Times) And we have not even talked about viruses, worms or spyware.Initial course of actionA recommend initial course of action would be for everyone to take time to download the FBI CSI file on Computer Crime from http://www.fbi.gov, study it, and take a look at what other companies are doing to secure their infrastructure. Maybe you can wait; maybe your infrastructure will be okay. But think about why you have car insurance. If it were legal not to have it, would you do without insurance? Attacks and ruined computer networks are a very real problem that cannot be ignored. The solutions are out there - talk to an expert today.SIDEBAR SIDEBAR ... if you are even slightly concerned about a third party obtaining anything on your computer, then your first step is to take a moment and figure out how vulnerable you are.At the risk of sounding overly dramatic, computer network security has to be more proactive and not reactive. How to Install a Software Firewall

Because of the advancing technology, crimes have become hi-tech too. If you have a personal computer at home with an active Internet connection, your computer is a possible candidate of attack by a number of malicious software, viruses, Trojans, and others. Fact is, the Internet acts as a portal to the entire World Wide Web. It makes your computer or even a system very vulnerable to hacking, fraud, and other Internet crimes of sorts. One way to protect your unit is to install a software firewall, or better yet, an antivirus firewall software program. Like the firewall installed in a house, it acts as a barrier to malware wanting to enter your system. If you can afford it, there are several firewall installers available in the market. They vary in effectiveness, credibility, price, warranty period, and package deals. However, there are also firewall installers that are available for download from the Internet, free of charge. From the point of view of an end-user, you would want to get as much information about getting the right firewall and installing it the proper way. Through this, you will be able to maximize the power of your personal computer and have the capability to work without being interfered or harmed by malware.A very wise initial step would be to know the specifications of your computer and your Internet connection. Given this information, you can properly decide on what firewall to purchase or download. The myth that free firewall installers don't work have been disproved. The ones freely available for download are safe and functional; you just have to do the choosing well. You could accomplish this task by asking help from friends who have technical knowledge about this. You could also ask experts, but they would probably require a fee in exchange for your query. After you have chosen the best firewall that fits the needs of your computer, make the purchase or download it. Make sure that you are getting a good deal, especially if you are paying for it. For downloads, make sure that the source is credible and tested safe. Follow instructions carefully upon installation of the firewall. If you are doubting your skills on this job, it would be best to ask assistance from the experts. The installation would not mean hakuna matata already. It is still after the installation that the most crucial part of using the firewall happens. You have to constantly up-date your firewall so as to keep track of innovations that will strengthen your defense. Of course, being a responsible user would also count. Make sure you take efforts in protecting your computer and let the firewall do the rest of the combating jobs. And, for good measure, you can also choose an antivirus firewall software program, which combines the functions of both an antivirus and a firewall. When Your Firewall is Just Not Enough - Get Filters For Spam and Clean Your Inbox

A firewall is essentially a network security software that inspects and focuses purely on the network that it has been placed across. The firewall is like a sort of a guard station on your computer's gateway, making sure that you and your computer are protected from some of the more nefarious elements of the digital superhighway. Normally found on internal networks and the internet, the basic task of this element of network security is to regulate the flow of information to and from your computer. It has a double element of service, meaning that not only does it work to prevent these black hat elements like malware and viruses from infiltrating your computer, it also blocks an already infected computer to 'hack' into a net work or even spread its internal viruses to other people within the network. A firewall is usually highly configurable and works on a basic set of rules that you give it. Most firewalls have an extensive options menu which you can use to customise to your needs. This article will discuss spam and how firewalls hold up against them - and also why in the day, you will still need a filter to clear your inbox from junk mail. While firewalls are great in stopping viruses and malware from entering your computer, it is does not specifically specialise in spam and junk mail. The reason why sometimes firewalls are not effective against spam is simply because emails are routed to a server, usually a POP3 server, which sometimes by passes the firewall built into your computer. Even if you have a modem firewall, it might not be totally effective. It scans for bad applications, proxies, shady i.p and even packets of information recognised as hacking attempts by other external sources. The vast disparity between emails and the technological backing behind spam is so great and varied, it is simply impossible to get rid of the spam problem using a firewall alone. This is why you need a specialised device, bespoke for spam and junk mail filtering to support the fire wall and even the anti virus programme that you are running on your PC.Just think of the firewall and the anti-virus as the front 2 line defences against the bad elements of the internet. Most of the time, viruses, malware, adware, worms and Trojans are detected on entry, but spam and junk mails represent the more stealthy 'ninja' like entities that work hard to choke your email server and clog up your inbox with worthless mass marketing efforts. A filter is a specialised piece of software that can route and delete them on detection; as well as a highly customisable and flexible piece of programming that ensures only your important emails get through and the junk mails stay where they belong. Filters can also log bad i.ps, addresses and place black lists on your email servers, ensuring you will be free of them forever. Don't let spam control your life. The Importance of Firewall Software Cannot Be Overstated

The internet today has transformed the way we access and use information. Information is at our figure tips and how much we benefit from it depends on how well we apply it in our daily activities. Awesome hallmarks emanating from the advent of internet technology encompasses Internet Banking, E-commerce, E-learning and much more. The importance of the internet and computer systems at large cannot be overstated or overemphasized. While this is a lucrative scenario of today's world, there is a downside pertaining to risks of connecting your computer system or laptop to the internet or network. There is a threat of viruses, malware, spyware, key loggers, and unauthorized access to information and so forth. This poses great danger to unwary computer users. The use of antivirus firewall software can help minimize this risk. Purchasing an antivirus software or firewall solution is a great investment; however, if you cannot afford one, there is a great deal of free antivirus and firewall software on the internet. Prevention is better than cure and this can be done by installing software firewalls, hardware routers or wireless routers.Software firewall solutions are great for single or standalone computer or laptop systems. They work well on a majority of operating systems (Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Me and many more). The latest operating systems such as Windows 7, vista and XP have their own built in effective firewalls; hence getting an additional firewall solution is not that necessary but can help keep things safe. Firewall software is relatively easy to install and boost numerous advantages such as the fact that you do require additional hardware, wiring or other related items. Their main downfall is that they are rather costly (the best firewall solutions come with a hefty price tag). Another factor to consider is that one copy is typically requires for each computer or laptop system. In terms of hardware routers, these a great choice for home networks that are connected to the internet. Hardware routers (in most cases) have at least four network ports that connect multiple computer systems or laptops together. Wiring is required for these and once installed; hardware routers can provide firewall protection for a number of computers. There is also an option for wireless routers which allow you to connect computer systems, personal desk assistants, printers and other peripherals without any wiring. Wireless routers are great for connecting laptops, computers or notebooks to the internet or other networks. While wireless connectivity has its advantages, it is rather costly to acquire the equipment as well as get a technician to install it. Another disadvantage is that wireless devices broadcast or transfer information using radio signals posing a threat as a third party outside your premises can intercept the information easily using advanced equipment. Additionally, it is also worth mentioning that not all routers come equipped with a built-in firewall meaning that you will have to buy one separately. Prior to installing any protection in terms of firewall software, wireless routers and hardware routers it is important to look at hardware and software review sites as well as consult knowledgeable computer technicians.
