Warner Bros looking to change pirates to consumers

At the Content Protection Summit in Los Angeles, Ben Karakunnel from Warner Bros noted that Warner has been tracking P2P piracy over the last 18 months and have come up with some interesting stats. Pirate pointers It's found that pirates do make purchases, but it is still figuring out how to make them buy Warner products. "One of the main things we're doing is looking at why they do things legitimately on certain products and not on others," said Ben Karakunnel. Other information WB has procured is that woman are more inclined to pirate TV shows and overseas piracy is on the up, with some opportune pirates creating whole subtitle tracks for ripped movies. Back in March, Warner was actively recruiting for a <a href="">P2P snoop</A>, so it looks as if this data gathering was linked to this role. While the results from Warner Bros aren't exactly scientific, it does show that the distributor is trying to figure out just how it can stem piracy and get people buying movies again before it hits crisis point like the music world. Looks like that sexiness could be delivered in the form of a device codenamed "B," shots of which have been delivered to Phandroid in a direct comparison with the iPhone 4 and the Galaxy S -- two handsets we're sure LG would love to embarrass. As you can see up there, the screen's looking pretty insane, especially when you consider that those other two phones in the picture have arguably the best displays in the mobile business right now; it's claimed to offer 700 nits of brightness, a 40 percent improvement over the Galaxy S. Oh, and if that doesn't impress you, Phandroid's tipster has also sent in a shot of the edge that appears to make the 9.3mm iPhone 4 look downright chubby. No word on a release date for the B just yet.

With the PlayBook tablet close to launch, RIM is aware that it may need to revisit its designs for the BlackBerry OS. TAT is a mobile user interface specialist, and will be aiming to give the BlackBerry devices an overhaul. Innovative "TAT is renowned for their innovative mobile user interface (UI) designs and has a long history of working with mobile and embedded technology," RIM's chief technology officer, David Yach, wrote on a company blog announcing the acquisition. "We're excited that the TAT team will be joining RIM and bringing their talent to the BlackBerry PlayBook and smartphone platforms." The amount that RIM spent on TAT has not been revealed, but it serves to underline the emphasis that the company is putting on keeping up with the likes of Apple and, of course, Microsoft following the revamped Windows Phone 7 release. The latest version of the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch operating system is definitely close to being ready, but it now appears that it is days, rather than hours, from making its appearance. Among the problems that the latest version fixes is the problem with the alarm clock that did not correct for the clocks changing in the UK – an issue that left thousands complaining that they were late for work. GM builds The Wi-Fi issues with the 4.2 build have been well documented on forums for those people using the GM build on their iPads and this would be an understandable reason for any delay. Although some are suggesting that next week will still be the most likely arrival point, it could be a couple of weeks if a new version for testing is needed to fix the Wi-Fi problems. In the meantime, we're sure your boss will understand that it's Apple's fault you're late for work and not yours.

YouView formally looking for content providers

YouView represents a push by major UK broadcasters and communications companies to set down a unified platform for IPTV. With the likes of the BBC, ITV, BT and Channel 4 involved, the project is being hailed as potentially one of the biggest IPTV platforms that the UK will see. Content needed And now it is seeking content for the platform, asking for formal expressions of interest from content providers "looking to make their content available on the open internet-connected TV environment" as part of a new 'industry engagement program'. Accprdiong to YouView, the first phase is to identify a 'small number' of auio and video content providers at first – with apps and IP channels brought in at a later date. Richard Halton, CEO, YouView, said: "I'm delighted to launch our industry engagement programme and look forward to seeing the response from across the UK's rich and vibrant content community." Ambition "Our ambition is to open up the TV screen to content providers who until now have been unable to build an audience, bringing viewers a brilliant choice of content," he added "YouView is creating an open environment for content providers to play in and this will take some technical innovation. "To develop the most effective processes for content providers we need to at first work closely with a few that can prove our model and ensure it's scalable. "Our plan is to extend the programme out as we start to build common expertise and get more great content on board." "We're seeing a vibrant ecosystem developing in the IPTV market and are also committed to helping this flourish and grow in the best way to meet the needs of content providers." YouView is scheduled to launch in 2011.

As long as you don't toss up picture of your cat sitting in the litter box and call it your business website, you are probably in good shape.Recently I wrote an article about starting a business for less than a grand. That part is easy, it is the "doing" that is hard for most folks. A friend of mine read the article and followed it to the letter, thus beginning the creation of a new business for him. It was really cool to see first hand how someone interprets my thinking and how much I take for granted what people understand.My friend called me to tell me about the adventure which showed me were I left some information out. I left out a couple of important steps in the section on how to use Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP to look big on a small budget. My office is a hodge podge of Vonage and Skype. My hands down favorite is Skype. If you called right now, chances are I would take the call on my computer and talk to you over Skype. It doesn't matter if you call my cell number, my Vonage number or my Skype number. I have them all "ringing" or forwarded to my Skype account first, my cell second, and the Vonage phone third.The handset phone in the office is used so infrequently that when my wife got locked out of our house by a real estate agent, she sat in my office for an hour waiting for someone. Her cell phone was inside the house, she didn't know the password to my computer and didn't even know there was still one plain old phone hidden next to our large color printer. She was 3 feet from freedom for an hour and didn't know it.The only real feature all of these VoIP systems are all missing is a time scheduler. i.e. at 10 pm stop forwarding to my cell, go directly to voice-mail. I do miss that part of the phone system we used when I was still paying crazy rent for office and retail space.Within Skype there are a couple of options that I can't recommend strong enough. First, get a local number for every area code you do business in. This is clearly ancient marketing and for some reason still works. No one calls our toll free numbers anymore and area codes are becoming a thing of the past for cell users. In the office, the old school phone systems still care.The next must use feature is on your account page, it is caller id. No one wants to answer a call from 100012345 on their cell phone, can you blame them? Every telemarketing hack shows up that way. Separate yourself from this crowd of telemarketing hacks and look like you are ready to do business. If you are a Skype user you can do this now under the Skype menu, then select account. If you bought an on line number, you can use that for your caller id. It used to be that you could also use your mobile number if you connected the accounts, you can't anymore, at least not the business accounts. The caller id isn't always displayed, but it is worth it for the 80% or so times it does.Finally if you want to go all out, get a great sounding microphone. I use the Blue snowball and everyone says it sounds great. Music stores have the best selection of USB microphones for reducing echo or sitting on a desk. At $199 the Blue Snowball looks cool too. Another option is to use a high quality blu-tooth headset like the Plantronics Pro or 521. I have six different blu-tooth headsets and these two are what I use when I travel with my laptop. It is really cool to jump on a WiFi hot spot and be able to run my business and work with customers just about anywhere. I like my office, but I like the bench in front of Starbucks on Balboa Island a whole lot better.
