Zdenek Kalal, a researcher at the University of Surrey, has just created what may be the most sophisticated vision system known to the civilian world. In essence, it takes the mundane task of tracking objects to an entirely new platform, enabling users to select an object on the fly and have the algorithm immediately start tracking something new. Within seconds, it's able to maintain a lock even if your object twists, turns, or leaves / returns. Furthermore, these "objects" could be used as air mice if you force it to track your digits, and if you teach it what your staff looks like, you'll have a fully automated security scanner that can recognize faces and grant / deny access based on its database of white-listed individuals. Sony Ericsson likely to demo PSP phone in January

<img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com/classifications/images/ps%20phone%20prototype-200-200.jpg"> Hot on the heels of sending out an invite for an Xperia experience at Mobile World Congress, Sony Ericsson has invited UK media to a briefing on 6 January about 'how Sony Ericsson plans to enhance the Android experience for consumers'. The Japanese-Swedish alliance will 'share its plans for 2011, including what's in-store for the Xperia line of devices' showing that there's certainly going to be more than one in the near future. The obvious device to be shown off is the <a href="">Sony Ericsson 'PSP phone'</A>, although that could well be called the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play after numerous domain names around that moniker were snaffled up by the company's Swedish PR team. What does Play mean to you? Alternatively Xperia Play could be the dedicated portal for the gaming experience on SE's phones - such a thing will need to be created if a specific gaming phone is created. Sony's head honcho Kaz Hirai has weighed in on the debate too - showing that the 'PSP phone' will likely be kept separate from the main Sony gaming brand for now. "We don't want gamers to be asking, what's the difference between that [a PS phone] and a PSP... we have to come up with a message that users will understand," he said, according to the <a href="http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/12/22/clues-about-the-next-playstation-portable/">New York Times</A>. "It would have to be a product that keeps the PlayStation's strengths intact." So roll on January 2010 - we want gaming phones, tablets and all the bits in between.

The new update is set to land later today, and usually Apple releases the update around 1PM Eastern Time, so we'll probably be seeing it this evening. The source confirmed that it will be landing on the <a href="http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/laptops-portable-pcs/laptops-and-netbooks/apple-ipad-681021/review">iPad </A>and <a href="http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/apple-iphone-4-694980/review">iPhone</A> range, so presumably the <a href="http://www.techradar.com/reviews/gadgets/ipods-and-portable-audio/ipod-and-mp3-players/apple-ipod-touch-4g-716177/review">iPod touch</A> is getting the goods as well, although this wasn't mentioned. Big for the 'Pad While iPhone users will be happy to receive a little update, it's the iPad brigade that will be enjoying this new announcement, as it will bring a raft of changes to their devices. The big one is multi-tasking: the same home button double-tap method will see apps running in the background displayed at the bottom. The tablet will also receive folder management, Game Center and presumably the likes of AirPrint and AirPlay, allowing wireless management of new Apple services.

The latest version of the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch operating system is definitely close to being ready, but it now appears that it is days, rather than hours, from making its appearance. Among the problems that the latest version fixes is the problem with the alarm clock that did not correct for the clocks changing in the UK – an issue that left thousands complaining that they were late for work. GM builds The Wi-Fi issues with the 4.2 build have been well documented on forums for those people using the GM build on their iPads and this would be an understandable reason for any delay. Although some are suggesting that next week will still be the most likely arrival point, it could be a couple of weeks if a new version for testing is needed to fix the Wi-Fi problems. In the meantime, we're sure your boss will understand that it's Apple's fault you're late for work and not yours.
