New features that make your Mac easier to use are always welcome, and Lion is packed with plenty of them, but it also changes a few things that can be hard to adjust to.</div>

Many of them can be rolled back in System Preferences and in applications' preferences. In addition, there's a bunch of covert settings that can be amended by typing commands into Terminal.</div>

So, if you're finding it hard to settle in with Lion, here's how to restore a sense of normality to many aspects of OS X.</div>

The first thing that will hit you is what Apple calls 'natural scrolling'. It makes moving around a document or website more like pushing a piece of paper around your desk, rather than making you interact with artificial elements like scrollbars and a viewport onto a document. Essentially You push the paper away from you to move down, instead of dragging the scrollbar down the side of the document, like you used to.</div>

Worry not. You can set this method of navigation back to normal in System Preferences. Untick the box under Mouse > Point & Click > Scroll direction: natural.</div>

The same setting appears in the Trackpad pane. If you've got a Magic Mouse and a trackpad, their scroll direction can be set independent of each other. If your mouse isn't a Magic Mouse, look for Move content in the direction of finger movement when scrolling or navigating at the top of the Mouse pane.</div>

You may not see this option if third-party software, such as Microsoft IntelliMouse, is installed. Remove that software and reopen System Preferences, and reinstall the software after changing the setting.</div>

Scrollbars only appear when you begin to scroll. Make them always visible by selecting System Preferences > General > Show scroll bars > Always. Lion's scrollbars have a subtler appearance than the old Aqua blue style. They're also narrower, which makes them harder to grab if you don't have a scrollwheel, and the arrows that moved pages in small amounts are no longer available.</div>

However, the positive repercussion of bringing back scrollbars is that they serve as a way to orient yourself in a document, which is particularly helpful in creative apps.</div>

You're not imagining that the traffic light buttons are smaller. This is baked into the system, but the buttons aren't as small as they seem. Their hit areas extend a little way above their tops, providing some leeway if you move the pointer too far.</div>

Conversely, items in the Finder's sidebar are larger than before. There's a new system-wide setting for sidebar icon and text sizes, although not every app adheres to it at present. The Finder and Mail do. Items can be made smaller again, or larger, in System Preferences > General > Sidebar icon size.</div>

There's no longer a special section in the Finder's search bar for saved searches, or smart folders. Save a Spotlight search and it gets placed under 'Favorites'.</div>

The old set of default searches are still embedded in the Finder app, but adding them to the sidebar displays a mundane document icon. Recreating them yourself gives them a cog icon that's more distinguishable.</div>

Another quirk of Lion is that automatically takes you the new All My Files folder every time you open a new Finder window. That's fine for new Mac users who are unfamiliar with the way that the OS X works, but it's frustrating if you're used to seeing your Home or Documents folders instead.</div>

Luckily a fix is very easy to find: just go to Finder > Finder Preferences and select your preferred destination from the New Finder Windows Show drop-down list.</div>

OS X has long provided visual hints to give you a sense of continuity – the Genie effect that indicates where to find a window you just minimised, for instance. Animation is used more extensively in Lion. Create a new window in Safari or TextEdit and it zooms into view from the distance.</div>

The differences in Mail run far deeper than that. Its two-pane layout frees up space for reading messages by hiding the list of your mailboxes. Just click Show in the Favorites Bar, just above the list of messages, to bring them back. Space is taken from the message pane to accommodate this.</div>

The Favorites Bar can be useful even with mailboxes visible, or it can be turned off if you don't want it by selecting View > Hide Favorites Bar. If the three-column layout doesn't work for you, choose Mail > Preferences > Viewing > Use classic layout. This stacks the messages list above the message viewer.</div>

Even then, messages that are part of the same conversation are grouped under the most recent reply. There might be times when you need to establish the exact order of messages that are part of separate but related conversations. In the View menu, make sure there isn't a tick next to Organize by Conversation so that messages are listed individually and chronologically.</div>

The new-look iCal and Address Book are controversial, and not just because of their brightly textured windows. Address Book's skeuomorphic design has come in for criticism because it's confusing and unwieldy. Unfortunately Apple has removed an option reported in prerelease versions that switched back to the classic three-column view.</div>

The author of the MacNix blog has created replacement files that restore a more subdued appearance to both apps. Keep backups of the apps and restore those versions before installing system updates. Also be aware that this amends the app in a way that can cause problems that are tricky to pinpoint. Safari 5.1 has a new behaviour when you hold Option (or use the right-click menu) to open a link in a new tab. It opens immediately to the right, which matches the way Firefox and Chrome work. Mission Control makes desktops (previously called Spaces) a mainstream feature. They can't be avoided if you're going to use fullscreen apps. They're organised in a long row, which Mission Control sorts so that the desktops you're using most often move to the left.</div>

That works well if you use and the left and right arrow keys to jump between apps on adjacent desktops. Things get confusing if you've upgraded from Snow Leopard and have memorised numeric shortcuts to take you to specific apps, or have enabled them in a fresh copy of Lion in System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Mission Control.</div>

You can get into the situation where +6, for example, actually takes you to Desktop 3 because that has been moved to sixth position in the row. To stop this happening, turn off System Preferences > Mission Control > Automatically rearrange spaces based on most recent use.</div>

One thing that will grate for heavy users of Spaces is the removal of an overview of app assignments. A less friendly summary can be seen by opening /Library/Preferences/com.apple.spaces.plist in TextExpander or Xcode (both free from the App Store) and looking within the app-bindings key. The values aren't expressed as simple desktop numbers, which makes them difficult to read, but this confirms which apps have assignments.</div>

An intuitive way to type accented characters is one of the best adoptions from iOS. Hold down the relevant key to show a pop-up listing the various forms. It comes at the expense of being able to hold a key down to repeat a character. You can get that back as long as you don't mind forfeiting the new shortcut by typing this into Terminal:</div>

Lion remembers what was open when you quit many apps, including Safari and QuickTime, and brings it back the next time you use the app. You can force it to forget things by quitting with Command+Option+Q instead. The feature can be turned off in System Preferences > General > Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps.</div>

That setting doesn't affect Resume, which restores things the next time you log in. This feature works great with an SSD, but not so well with a hard drive and many open apps. Basically, this changes the search engine in the awesome bar and the search bar to Bing, instead of Firefox’s staple, Google. It also changes the default homepage to Bing.com. Obviously, you can still change your homepage per usual, but the search bars will stay with Bing.<br />
If you hate Bing, you can relax, because the default version of Firefox will still work with Google as the default search engine. This is a special version of the browser that will only be appreciated by fans of Bing. For the rest of you, just keep doing what you are doing, and you will not see any change to your beloved search engine in Firefox.<br />
If you want to download Firefox with Bing simply head over to Firefoxwithbing.com and download the browser. If you already have Firefox, then this will simply add the plugins to your current browser, so you do not have to download the browser from scratch again.<br />

<p style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="90" src="http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/3020/main200200.jpg" width="120" /></p><br/>When IE head Dean Hachamovitch announced the first platform preview of IE 10 at the MIX conference in April he said further preview releases would be "between 8 and 12 weeks apart".<br/><br/>Platform Preview 2 arrives after 11 weeks and adds features for web apps, including Drag-drop and File Reader; so you can drag objects around on a web page - look for a magnetic fridge poetry demo on the IE test drive site soon - or drag files into browser windows to upload them and have that happen in the background.<br/><br/>File access is possibly the first feature from the HTML5 Labs previews to make it into IE.<br/><br/>PP2 also gets the web workers spec. Rob Mauceri, the lead program manager on the IE team, calls that "a popular request from developers" (we count it as the most common request in the IE blog after Flebox, which arrived in PP1) and it's going to make a big difference to the performance of web apps – and maybe your battery life.<br/><br/>With web workers, a web app can shift some code to a thread running in the background – so a game can be working out the next turn without slowing you down while you play (usually the JavaScript for that would slow down what you're doing).<br/><br/>This should work particularly well in IE because of the way the Chakra JavaScript engine can split code across multiple cores (and Microsoft's latest figures say that as of March 2011, the average PC has 2.4 cores).<br/><br/>Other browsers already support web workers, although Firefox 5 does not allow messages sent through a direct 'channel' between different pieces of background code which Microsoft says explains why PP2 does better than Firefox at its new Bellagio Fountain test drive demo.<br/><p style="text-align: center;"><img alt="IE10" class="aligncenter" height="161" src="http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/2152/bellagioff5242090.jpg" width="252" /></p><br/><strong>FASTER:</strong> <em>IE10 gets Web workers after other browsers…</em><br/><p style="text-align: center;"><img alt="IE10" class="aligncenter" height="268" src="http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/929/bellagioff5142090.jpg" width="420" /></p><br/><strong>FIREFOX 5:</strong> <em>…Microsoft says Firefox is slower at this test because it doesn't have message channels</em><br/><br/>PP2 is the first browser to support three new performance APIs, including the Page Visibility setting that the Chrome team has been suggesting web sites use to check if a page is in a background or tab or a minimised window.<br/><br/>"If a web app is pinging the server for data it could be doing a lot of work and increasing the cost of running that server, none of which is needed because the window isn't visible to the user," Mauceri explained.<br/><br/>The IE team confirmed that IE10 PP2 is "the same HTML5 engine seen in the recent public "Windows 8" demos". Interview: Firefox, Linux and the future of the web

<P align=center><img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//Review%20images/Linux%20Format/LXF%20139/LXF139.iview.image_01-200-200.jpg"></P><br /><P>Tristan Nitot started working for Netscape in 1997, and was one of the first volunteers to work on the Mozilla project that rose out of Netscape's ashes. </P><br /><P><br /><P>He started Mozilla Europe (he's now president of that organisation) and has seen the birth, growth and worldwide success of Firefox from the inside – so who better to ask about the future of the project, how its guiding philosophy chimes with that of Linux and why the folks at Mozilla welcome the competition from Google's mighty Chrome.</P><br /><P>He sat down with Linux Format to have a chat. </P><br /><P><STRONG>Linux Format:</STRONG> Could you briefly describe the Mozilla community for us? Most users are happy with the software and don't think about the people behind it. </P><br /><P><STRONG>Tristan Nitot:</STRONG> The Mozilla community is a very energetic, passionate group. It seems to be getting bigger all the time: every year we need bigger facilities for our meetups! </P><br /><P>Like most communities, there is an international element, where people communicate in English, and sometimes French or Spanish – at least in Europe – and there are local communities who are especially active in their own region, have their own site, and their own meetups, and will usually drive localisation for their language or locale. </P><br /><P>Equally, there are many people involved at Mozilla who probably don't feel an affiliation to a particular regional community, but to the global project. That's the beauty of the internet. The community covers quite a range of interests. </P><br /><P>We have a lot of web developers who are very active inside Mozilla, a lot of FLOSS hackers and a lot of open culture activists too. At our core is a shared belief in the public benefit of the internet: an internet that is transparent, open, international, shared and participatory. </P><br /><P>That probably describes the Mozilla community the best: participatory. </P><br /><P><STRONG>LXF:</STRONG> How have you seen the landscape of the browser wars change over the years? </P><br /><P><STRONG>TN:</STRONG> It evolved from the 90s from a duopoly (Netscape vs Microsoft) to a scary monopoly by Microsoft. Innovation totally stopped back then, and if you weren't using a Windows computer, your experience of the web was likely to be quite inferior. </P><br /><P>This was quite depressing, since we are – even today – in the early days of the internet, and tons of things remain to be invented. It's only when Firefox started to take massive market share from Internet Explorer that Microsoft decided to reinvest into Internet Explorer and start to support more open standards. </P><br /><P>Now things are looking a lot better for the future of the web, as users have a choice of browsers and innovation is here. I don't think it is a coincidence that the development of the web has coincided with more choice in the desktop operating system market. </P><br /><P><STRONG>LXF:</STRONG> Where do you feel Firefox fits into the current landscape of browsers today? </P><br /><P><STRONG>TN:</STRONG> The browser is what represents us online. It's the piece of software that knows the most about you. This is why you need to have a web browser that is secure and built by an organisation you can trust. </P><br /><P>Mozilla – which is an online community led by a public benefit organisation – is uniquely positioned to deliver such a browser, independent and secure, yet very easy to use and of course customisable. </P><br /><P><STRONG>LXF:</STRONG> What can we expect to see in future releases from the Firefox stable? </P><br /><P><STRONG>TN:</STRONG> Performance, innovation and customisation. The upcoming Firefox 4 is very fast and offers things that make it easier and more productive to browse the web.</P><br /><P>A few things I love about Firefox 4 are: a new theme which leaves more space for the content; the notion of "App tabs" so that web applications such as your webmail are always visible in the Tab bar; and Panorama, a feature that enables me to visually organise my dozens of tabs. </P><br /><P>We're also close to finally implementing support for HTML5 and a few other related open standards, and Sync (which started as the Weave project) is included in Firefox by default. </P><br /><P><STRONG>LXF:</STRONG> How is Mozilla embracing the mobile market? </P><br /><P><STRONG>TN:</STRONG> Bringing Firefox to mobile phones is the next step towards fulfilling Mozilla's mission of providing access to the web for everyone, regardless of device or location. Additionally, Mozilla aims to provide a rich platform for developers to create compelling content and innovative apps. </P><br /><P>Firefox is fast, secure and customisable: something that most mobile browser don't really offer. Firefox mobile will also syncs with the Firefox on your desktop. In addition to our work on Maemo/MeeGo, we have just released Firefox 4 beta for Android, our first version for Android phones. </P><br /><P>We're investing heavily in this market: Mobile is the future of browsing and Android is a growing market and a platform that enables us to develop and offer a full-featured browser! </P><br /><P><STRONG>LXF:</STRONG> There has been criticism in the past that Mozilla doesn't care about Linux so much these days. What is the current position on Linux from Mozilla? </P><br /><P><STRONG>TN:</STRONG> Our vision for the web is that it is a truly interoperable platform: that it is a good measure of our success if you can experience the web as well on Linux as you can on a proprietary operating system. This is what the browser wars were about, after all. </P><br /><P>And while the web is winning today, we're never going to be complacent about that. And we've been investing in the GNU/Linux market since day one. </P><br /><P>Linux is important for us for a number of reasons: our missions align, many of our community members run Linux, and Android and MeeGo/Maemo, the phone markets on which we focus, are Linux derivatives. </P><br /><P><STRONG>LXF:</STRONG> In recent months the browser of choice for many Linux users has been Chromium. What do you think of Chromium and how it compares to Firefox? </P><br /><P align=center><img alt="Mozilla" src="http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/Review%20images/Linux%20Format/LXF%20139/LXF139.iview.mozzila_log-420-90.jpg" width="420"></P></IMG><br /><P><STRONG>TN:</STRONG> Chromium is a very good product, but its guiding philosophy is very different from Firefox. Following the Linux philosophy, Firefox tries to use the libraries that are already in your system (XRender, Pango) and we contribute in order to improve these libraries. </P><br /><P>Chromium, on the other hand, is statically built against its own libraries. This allows Chromium to be slightly faster but uses more memory, and in many cases Google's coding investments in these libraries are less beneficial to the Linux ecosystem.</P><br /><P>When you want to sync your browsing history between several browsers, several options are available. With Chromium, you could sync via your Google account. We at Mozilla consider that your browsing history is yours and should remain private. While data has to be stored on a server to be synced, our solution is to encrypt everything on the client-side before sending it to the Mozilla server. This way, Mozilla cannot data-mine your data. </P><br /><P>Furthermore, our server is open source, so you can install and run your own instance of the service, should you want to. We've made very significant progress in terms of performance with Firefox 4, and we offer key differentiators in terms of privacy and extensibility. And this is the world we want to be in: competition is good. </P><br /><P><STRONG>LXF:</STRONG> How has Mozilla changed as an organisation over the years? </P><br /><P><STRONG>TN:</STRONG> The biggest change is probably that we are now financially sustainable and have reached significant market share, especially in Europe. For example, we're really close to 50% of the market in Germany and Poland, with an average of 33% in Europe. </P><br /><P>This translates into being taken seriously as an important part of 'the web' and gives us the chance to influence future developments. And this leads me to the aspects that have not changed: Mozilla continues to be a community of people who want the open web to succeed. </P><br /><P>We want it to be beneficial to individuals, and we all plan to be like this for a very long time.</P>

It's just released a plug-in that gets around Firefox's current limitations in handling H.264-encoded videos on HTML5 pages by taking advantage of the H.264 support built into Windows 7. On a more technical level, that means the plug-in parses HTML5 pages and replaces the Video tags with a call to the Windows Media Player plug-in, which then allows the content to be played right in the browser.
