<P> </P><br /><P>As this security solution is not such a great idea, other companies have researched, and finally found a new way to prevent cell phones and PDAs theft. This method permits to remotely disable up to four different tasks of a stolen cell phone or PDA, rendering it inoperable. But at the same time data contained in the device are locked. The beauty of this option is that the unit is not damaged in any way - full functionality and data can be easily restored if the device is recovered. Thus, the device is useless to the thief, but it can be reactivated and restored if it is recovered and returned to its rightful owner.</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>Another new security breach has been encountered this year when reports were received about a backdoor Trojan horse program that can take control over a mobile device. This is the first known backdoor Trojan horse for PDAs. The subject program, identified as Backdoor.Brador.A, attacks PDAs running the Windows operating system. And like all backdoors, it cannot spread by itself. The Trojan arrives as an e-mail attachment or can be downloaded from the Internet. Also, it has a complete set of destructive functions characteristic for backdoors. After it is installed, this small program is activated when the PDA is restarted and begins to look for a remote administrator to take control of the device. Security specialists claim the virus was written by a Russian virus coder since it was attached to an e-mail with a Russian sender address and contained Russian text. Fortunately, the Trojan's threat control and removal was rated as "easy".</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>The important thing about this virus is not the number of devices affected, because this number is very small, but the fact that this is the first one that appeared on the "market" is considered to be very important. We have to admit that it is hardly surprising that viruses have found their way to mobile devices. This is the natural trend. Where technology goes, viruses will follow. As the new technology shifts into the mobile market, these threats will move in that direction also. The specialists from the Kaspersky Labs claim they were expecting a virus attack on a PDA, due to the latest attacks against other mobile devices. Now, the PDA users look at a real danger and it is a well known fact that interested intruders will grab the chance to attack PDAs and mobile phones in the near future. Virus threats development for mobile devices is passing through the same stages as the one for desktops.</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>Almost at the same time with the appearance of the first Trojan for PDAs, the first virus to affect cell phones has also arrived. This worm is called "Cabir", and it has been spotted by some security specialists who issued an alert concerning the danger. Cabir spreads using a file named "Caribe.sis" and travels across devices working with the Symbian operating system which is used in PDAs and many cell phones. Cabir places itself usually on a mobile device when a user agrees to a transmission showing the text message "Caribe". After that the worm begins a nonstop search particularly for Bluetooth-connected wireless devices to send itself to. Also, the battery's life of the infected device is harshly reduced during this process. The inventors of Cabir did not design the worm to spread massively. It was intended to be a test demonstrating that these mobile devices can be easily infected by viruses because of their rapid maturation. The worm rated with a low risk because it has to be intentionally activated by a mobile phone user, and also allowing the Caribe package requires pressing a button prior the files can be loaded into the receiving phone.</P><br /><P> </P><br /><P>It was predictable that viruses and worms for cell phones and PDAs would appear. This is the end result of the impressive advances made in mobile communication technology in the past years. Over time, cell phones and PDAs turn out to be more PC-like, making them vulnerable to viruses. And because they are more PC-like, smart cell phones and PDAs are mostly used by companies for mission-critical applications and data storage. Also they are used for receiving emails and text messages just like desktop computers. That makes their users just as exposed to viruses and worms. These security concerns can be dealt with software-encryption solutions that need to be attached to the new devices. The encryption technology expands to mobile devices the identical type of security that many companies have organized into their desktop computers. It encrypts data and prevents illegal access to the data stored within the device, which is either lost or stolen.</P>

<P align=center><img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//Review%20images/TechRadar/Computing/ExoPC%20Slate/ExoPCslate-200-200.jpg"></P> <br /><P>Microsoft will show off a special version of Windows for devices using ARM chips at CES 2011, according to some major US news sources. </P><br /><P>The recent New York Times' assertion that a <a href="">tablet OS would be Windows 8</A> raised eyebrows and plenty of doubts, but that Microsoft will debut a tweaked user interface for touch has looked likely for some time, and it has now been suggested that the OS will be for ARM devices.</P><br /><P>The slate OS, which will most probably by an adapted version of Windows 7, is likely to be the highlight of Microsoft's traditional curtain raising keynote for CES 2011. </P><br /><P><STRONG>A matter of days</STRONG></P><br /><P>The Wall Street Journal, <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6BK4OD20101222?">Reuters</A> and <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-12-21/microsoft-is-said-to-announce-version-of-windows-for-arm-chips-at-ces-show.html">Bloomberg</A> have insisted that Microsoft will show a slate offering in January at the Las Vegas consumer electronics show.</P><br /><P>Interestingly, the suggestion is thatMicrosoft will show off Windows for ARM chips - an alternative to the Intel X86 architecture that has proliferated in PCs for years.</P><br /><P>Cambridge-based ARM is the UK's most formidable tech company, and its chip designs have become commonplace in more and more devices over the past five years.</P><br /><P><STRONG>A Touch too little</STRONG></P><br /><P>Although Windows 7 tablets have emerged and the OS has a degree of touch usability, it cannot be considered an ideal solution for tablets. </P><br /><P>Microsoft is aware that the growing desire for tablets, following the success of the iPad from rival Apple, means that it must react quickly. </P><br /><P>And with Google's Android gaining traction and Chrome OS on the horizon, Microsoft will be desperate to strike while its well-received Windows 7 is fresh in the memory, and build on the arrival of its other touch enabled OS, Windows Phone 7 for mobile phones. </P><br /><P><STRONG>Stellar year</STRONG></P><br /><P>Tablets are being forecast to have a stellar year, and a slew of the devices are expected to be announced at CES. </P><br /><P>Many of those will sport Android, but it now appears that there may be a few that come with the familiar Windows logo instead. </P><br /><P>And then it will be over to Apple, whose iPad 2 is expected to surface in the next few months.</P>

HTC to debut first LTE devices in 2011

"We think that the US mobile operators will be taking the lead and pushing 4G LTE in the US market... <P>Click "Start," the arrow to the right of "Shutdown" and then click "Restart" to restart your <a class="StrongLink" href="http://www.ehow.com/computers/">computer</A>. Sometimes a simple restart will fix problems.</P><P>Make sure all devices are securely connected to your computer. Unplug and plug device back in. For example, if you are having a problem with the mouse, unplug it from the back of your computer and plug it back in. If it is a USB mouse, unplug the USB device from the port and plug it back in. If you are still having problems, unplug the devices you are having problems with and completely shut down your computer. Plug the devices back in and then turn your computer on. Move the device to another USB port. Check the batteries if you are using a USB mouse.</P><P>Check for device conflicts. Click "Start, "Settings" and then click "Control Panel." Double-click "System" and click the "Device Manager" tab. Click the plus sign sign next to the input device you are having a problem with. If you see a black "!" point on a yellow field, it indicates the device has a problem. A red "X" indicates the device is disabled. A blue "I" on a white field indicates the "Use Automatic Settings" feature is not selected for the device. A green question mark means there is a problem with the driver for the device. Click on the icon and Windows will give you more information and a solution to the problem found.</P><P>Uninstall the USB device to update the drivers. Open Device Manager if it is not open, right-click the device you are having problems with and click "Uninstall." Then the uninstall process is completed, unplug the device from your computer and shut down your computer. Plug the device back in and turn your computer on. Windows will automatically detect the new hardware and install the drivers.</P>

<br /> <p>In recent times, mobile devices have become quite powerful and feature rich and are getting attention from consumers and businesses alike. Faster processors, larger RAM and flash memories along with multiple communication technologies have made mobile devices suitable to deploy and run business applications. Such advancements are helping businesses embrace mobility to improve their processes thereby increasing revenues and efficiency while lowering operational costs. Mobile device is an important component of any mobile solution. There are wide-varieties of mobile devices to choose from. Most commonly used enterprise mobile devices are based on Windows Mobile operating system from Microsoft and it has become a preferred platform used by companies around the world.</p><p><b>Problem</b></p><p>Windows Mobile is a feature packed and versatile operating system. There is a lot an enterprise can exploit out of this platform. But most of the enterprises don't need all of the available features. Giving a powerful mobile device to mobile workforce can sometimes actually become a serious concern as workers might use the device for personal use rather than for the business. Besides, companies spend lots of money and effort in developing and deploying business applications. They want to ensure that the workers use the solution to its full potential in favor of the business. Following are some of the challenges that should be addressed to maximize the benefits of a solution that involve mobile devices:</p><p>* Entertainment on the job</p><p>All Windows Mobile devices contain built-in applications like browsers, games, phone etc. all of which can easily distract a mobile worker. A game of Solitaire can waste crucial working hours. This kind of mobile device usage is certainly not favorable to the businesses</p><p>* Maintenance Problems</p><p>An employee who is not very knowledgeable about Windows Mobile can easily change the important device settings (e.g. Network, system files etc.). Such intentional or unintentional manipulation of device settings can cause the business critical application to fail. Imagine a user turns off the WiFi radio on the device, while the application is transferring critical data to the server. Results can be costly in terms of money and time. Too much manipulation can "corrupt" the device, which has to be returned to the IT department, again causing loss of productivity and wastage of IT resources. While the device is with IT, the mobile worker might be sitting idle, waiting for the device to return. Loss! Loss! Loss!</p><p>* Installation of Third-party applications</p><p>There are thousands of third-party applications (for personal and gaming purposes) available on the internet these days. These applications can be easily installed on a Windows Mobile device. Installation of unauthorized third-party applications for personal use surely waste the time but can also disrupt the device operation by consuming memory and processor resources. Besides, those applications can contain malware and viruses which might pose a security risk to the organization.</p><p>* Physical Data Security</p><p>Business applications are designed to work online or offline. If connectivity is not available the application goes back to offline mode. This makes it possible for mobile worker to continue working, until the connectivity is achieved again. In offline mode the application stores the data locally. If the data is sensitive, it is mostly encrypted. This saves the data from misuse in case the device is lost or stolen. But once a device is stolen the thief can connect the device with a PC via ActiveSync and copy the data files out. Desktop based hacking tools can be used to decipher/decrypt the data. There should be way to block the user from copying the data from a device.</p><p><b>Solutions</b></p><p>Locking down general purpose Windows Mobile devices into kiosk mode can solve the above problems. By locking down the devices, the enterprise can restrict the user to launch and use only "approved" applications and functionality. e.g., a company can provision the mobile devices so that the workers cannot install third-party applications on their own. Another example would be to enable Data Only connection over the phone network, while blocking the voice calls.</p><p>There are two alternative methods to lock down mobile devices:</p><p><b>Method 1: Building Custom Kiosk devices</b></p><p>This approach requires an enterprise to build custom kiosk devices that do just what enterprise needs. Windows CE operating system is most commonly used to develop custom devices. This solution has the following advantages and disadvantages.</p><p>Advantages:</p><p>* Since requirements are tied to the hardware, the enterprise can precisely control features of the device.</p><p>Disadvantages:</p><p>* It is very costly to develop a hardware device from scratch. This might not be possible at all for small and medium sized companies as it requires huge upfront investments.<br /><br>* It does not make business sense to build your own hardware if the required volumes are low, say if only a few hundred devices are needed.<br /><br>* Custom device will need custom application development. Number of software developers for a custom platform will be very low if any.<br /><br>* Once custom hardware is designed and built, it is very costly to modify or upgrade it. This is a very common problem with this approach.</p><p><b>Method 2: Lockdown mobile devices with tools like SureLock Studio</b></p><p>SureLock Studio gives enterprises the power to easily lock down off-the-shelf or ruggedized Windows Mobile devices. An administrator can lock down the devices with kiosk configuration generated by SureLock Studio. A kiosk configuration contains which features and applications are "approved" for use by the mobile worker. These configurations are generated in the form of CAB files that makes it very easy to deploy them on large number of devices. Kiosk CAB installation works in the same way as any other application CAB. There are advantages of locking down the devices with SureLock Studio:</p><p>Advantages:</p><p>* Save costs: Enterprises can buy off-the-shelf (HTC/ASUS/iPaq etc) or Ruggedized Windows Mobile devices (Symbol/Motorola/Intermec) and deploy the enterprise business applications on them. SureLock will make sure that the worker is restricted to only use "approved" functionality of the device.<br /><br>* Choice of devices: Since all Windows Mobile devices are based on the same core operating system, companies have the choice to select a device model based on the specific features that the model may have. The business application will work on any device model with a little or no modifications.<br /><br>* In future enterprises can modify the kiosk configuration to allow or disallow new features or applications. For e.g. the company might decide later on to allow mobile workers to use the devices for making phone calls. A new SureLock kiosk configuration can be deployed with the phone feature enabled.</p><p>Disadvantages:</p><p>* As SureLock does software lock down of the device, hard-resetting the device to factory defaults (clean boot) will cause the loss of kiosk settings. There are a couple of workarounds. Kiosk cab can be kept in the storage card along with an Autorun.exe. After a reboot, the kiosk configuration can be installed which will again lock down the device. Besides some ruggedized mobile device vendors (like Symbol/Motorola) have support for companies to build their own Writable ROM images. Kiosk configuration can be stored on in the ROM and can be installed automatically after a clean boot.</p><p><b>Conclusion</b></p><p>Using a tool like SureLock Studio makes the process of locking down Windows Mobile devices easy and painless. Getting a Secure Grip on Handheld Devices

<br /> <p>Companies today do not have a firm grasp of the security vulnerabilities associated with their handheld devices. Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs), Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), email and paging devices (such as the Blackberry), and other hybrid handheld communication devices are found in the hands of most every business manager these days but their inherent vulnerabilities are largely overlooked. </p><p>Perhaps this is because of their size, mobility or relatively inexpensive costs. Either way, these devices do not register on the radar of most systems administrators and are wrongly perceived as not as vulnerable as end user terminals connecting via hardwire to a LAN, WAN or the Internet. The popularity, proliferation and rapidly evolving technology associated with the devices make them extremely susceptible to security vulnerabilities.  </p><p>  There are several general classes of hand held device operating systems: the Palm Operating System (OS) (Palm Pilots, Handspring Visor, etc.); Apple IPhone OS; Symbian; and those running Windows CE and Pocket PC (Compaq, HP Jornada, Casio, etc.). Hand held devices are equipped with a wide variety of accessories from cameras, modems and synchronization cables to Bluetooth and wireless connections and flash memory storage. All of the operating systems have software libraries with applications, widgets and plugins developed and distributed throughout both the commercial and freeware shareware channels and as with any software developed by non-trusted sources, freeware programs may possibly contain hidden code - be it adware or malware.  </p><p>Given their size and portability, the primary security concern associated with hand held devices is their ability to store large amounts of information. Add to this the breadth of communication options available and you have a device that introduces formidable risks. Since the devices are relatively inexpensive, users buy their own or receive them as gifts and they tend to come into use in an organization regardless of whether they are approved or not. As such, companies have little or no control over data leaving the organization.  </p><p>A wide variety of vulnerabilities exist when these devices are attached to PCs or other network-connected automated information systems (AIS): Trojan horse and malware programs can easily be installed thus creating a backdoor on host networks to permit exploitation since antivirus products for hand held devices are not as evolved as PC antivirus software and operating systems currently do not limit malicious codes from modifying system files. Wireless device connections can be intercepted and data captured without the knowledge or permission of the user as recently demonstrated in well-publicised incidents of drive-by hacking, blue snarfing and blue jacking. Hand held devices using infrared data transport technology might also be intercepted as well. Finally, hand held devices by their very nature are small and therefore easily stolen or lost resulting in sensitive information being disclosed to unauthorized individuals.  </p><p>The first and best step to getting a grip on hand held devices, is to ensure that your company includes them in their written security policies. Companies must issue clear and concise guideline on what devices may and MAY NOT be used and for what specific purposes.  </p><p>How the devices are used and the type of information that is allowed to be stored on the devices will directly impact the overall risk to the organization.   Good policies will specify the approved configuration of the devices and modes of operation including whether wireless radio frequency and/or infrared transmission is permitted and whether the user is allowed System Administrator rights to the base PC with which the device synchronizes. Clearly define the purpose and acceptable use conditions of the devices. Corporate provided devices should be used only for work related activities. Users should sign an agreement to abide by the acceptable use policy. Devices should not be used to enter or store passwords, safe/door combinations, personal identification numbers, or classified, sensitive or proprietary information.    </p><p>Effective policies should delineate approved connectivity requirements, prohibiting up and downloads via wireless or infrared while connected to desktop PCs and stating approved methods for infrared data transfers. Users should be given precise instructions regarding requirements to sync their devices to receive patches, fixes and updates. It's imperative that your policies spell out device-specific build and configuration requirements to include: firewall, VPN, encryption, biometric, authentication and anti-virus software needs.  </p><p>Physical security requirements should be simple and achievable but at a minimum should state that devices shall not be left unattended when attached to a computer, secured with password protection when not in use and reported immediately if lost or stolen and insured against theft, loss or breakage.  </p><p>Your organization should have a mechanism to manage the policies for hand held devices from a central location and establish a registry of all devices in use. This registry should include: serial number, configuration, make and model and to whom the device has been issued. Each device owned by the organization should be marked as such with an asset tag or other permanent marking.  </p><p>While handheld devices may currently be a lesser target than networks, end user terminals or laptops for virus and hacker attacks, that won't always be the case. The applications and functionality we see on PDAs today is what we saw on a laptops five years ago. What we'll find on PDAs five years from now is what we find on laptops today. They send themselves as a harmless link to the friends to the victims virus affected PC and have a message attached to them. An example will be the popular MSN virus called the photo virus. It sends the friends of the infected user a message like - "Hey! Is that really you in this picture? OMG!" and a link to the virus. Most people thinking that this is some sort of a picture will click on the link and get infected themselves. And this chain continues across the internet.</p><p>Emails are traditionally the virus writers favourite. But this has been tackled to an extent with the help of technologies like Domain Keys and SPAM blacklists and other ways. Though the number of viruses that attach themselves to emails and mass send to all the people in the address book are almost gone, the ones that tend to phish out information from you still continues. For example, I usually get a lot of mails claiming to be from banks and that my account has been hacked up. It needs my password to reset my bank account . But when you check the links contained in the mail, you will see that it does not link to the bank, but to another site which looks exactly like the bank site. If you enter your username and password, they will get it and then your account will be hacked and money stolen by these virus creators.</p><p>So, if your computer is infected with viruses, your security is compromised and hence your personal information is in danger. Make sure you use the internet with care and check where you are entering your information to and what type of links you click or the type of sites you visit. You can use an antivirus to clean your computer off viruses.
