A Sony spokesperson told us that recent reports that the Sony Alpha 77 release would boast a 25-megapixel sensor are untrue.</div>

Sony has revealed a a replacement to the high-end Alpha 700 DSLR, which it will release this year, according to a press report.</div>

A spokesperson for Sony tells us the company has shown a prototype for what could be the Sony A800 at CES 2011 in Las Vegas, but adds that this is the same Sony Alpha 77 prototype shown at Photokina last autumn despite other press reports claiming it is a new mock-up and not the final design.</div>

The spokesperson also tells us that a Sony A77 release will use the translucent mirror technology introduced with last year's Sony Alpha 33 and Sony A55 cameras. Sony Alpha users have been eagerly awaiting a replacement for the Sony A700 for at least a year. Announced in 2007, the A700 was - and still is - Sony's most convincing prosumer APS-C DSLR, and the closest thing to the fondly remembered Konica-Minolta semi-pro film SLRs of yesteryear.</div>

Three years on and the Sony faithful are feeling neglected. So will they or won't they?</div>

All indications now are that Sony will replace the Alpha 700. Prototypes were on display at Photokina last autumn and CES in January. In the Windows 8 touch demos we've seen a tablet version of Snap that lets you split the screen into two different sized windows. That works on Windows 8 without a touchscreen, but involves holding one finger on the touchpad while you slide a second finger – kind of fiddly.</div>

All of these gestures would work just as well on a multitouch trackpad on a Windows 8 notebook and we're hoping they'll be in the OS as standard. They would also work with a touchscreen that detected four touch points rather than just two; we don't know if that will be the spec for Windows 8 tablets but if it is, Microsoft could put much more powerful gestures on tablets than just swiping, tapping and pinching.</div>

Welcome to the smallest member of the HTC Android family, one that
fits directly in the palm of your hand, comes in at least a couple of
cool color combinations, and beats out the whole rest of the world in
mid-range competition. This is the HTC Wildfire S, the newest in a
lovely line of HTC devices announced back in February, plus more since,
these being thus: myTouch 4G Slide, Sensation, Flyer (tablet), and
Facebook phones – ChaCha (aka Status on AT&T) and Salsa. Will the
HTC Wildfire S stand up with the impressive lineup HTC has already
released this summer season? Let’s take a look!<br />

Before we continue, let’s have a look at our hands-on video so you
know how incredibly handheld this device is, how the UI is looking, and
what’s under the boot. This video shows yours truly taking the device
out of the box for the first time as well as starting it up and
exploring the contents:<br />

Hardware</h4>
This being the smallest HTC device on the block, one might think
that it’s squished, tinier than it aught to be, too small for Android.
While this may be true of the competition whose devices are essentially
the same size with basically have the pixel resolution in the display,
here the HTC crew have provided a start screen for such a small device
on a TFT display that looks rather bright and nice. The only complaint
I’ve got about interactivity is the small area in which now the four
Android menu buttons and the buttons at the bottom of the display (for
apps, phonecalls, whatever you might put there.) This area has many
different things now in very close proximity, a situation where a
person with above-average sized fingers might find tapping to be rather
inaccurate.<br />

On the other hand, the rest of the display is just the right size
for tiny computing. As this device is rolling out with a 600Mhz
processor on a single-core chip, we won’t be using it for too many
high-quality apps. On the other hand, its size and its ability to use
music apps like Spotify and DoubleTwist (a shortcut for DoubleTwist is
included on the device out of the box), this handset is perfect for
day-to-day media interaction. The speaker is loud, the construction is
creak-free, and the plastic making up most of the casing is not quite
as nice as HTC usually comes out with, but isn’t the worst we’ve seen
as far as quality goes either. Having the ability to get a different
color combination in this device is a plus as well.<br />

Software and Performance</h4>
In your apps drawer, you’ll find your usual set of Google-set items
including the Android Market, FM radio, Camera and Camcorder, and easy
to use apps such as Gallery, Calculator,Music, Phone, and Peep for your
Twitter activity. You’ve also got Slacker radio built in for some
streaming music action, HTC’s Weather app for some excellent and
totally simple GPS-location-based weather reports, and “My Device”
which will give you, the new-to-smartphones user a full guide on how to
get acquainted with your new device.<br />

You’ll find that you’re able to run the simplest apps plus a few
slightly-higher-functioning apps like Angry Birds without a hitch.
Unfortunately the internal storage on this device is relatively low,
and it’s not immediately apparent to brand NEW to Android users how to
push their content over to their external memory, that being the 2GB
microSD card that comes with the device. Once they DO figure out such a
thing, then do the smart thing and upgrade to a much larger 32GB card,
they’ll be doing just fine from that point forward.<br />

As far as performance goes, you’ll not find the Wildfire S winning
any contests, but the results are certainly OK for a 600Mhz
single-core, that’s for sure.<br />

Are you overwhelmed by the myriad mailing options, labels, and chat windows? We aren't either, but apparently Google sees things differently, and has an interface overhaul planned that'll simplify things in your webmail world. It looks like the spacious and simple design language from Google + will carry over to all the web services proffered by the gang in Mountain View. For now, it's available as a couple of simplistic skins to be tried on in the Themes tab of your Gmail settings, with more permanent changes rolling out in the coming months. Google Calendar is slated for a stripped-down wardrobe in the next few days as well, with El Goog promising more cosmetic and functional changes for both services later this summer. In the meantime, the company's looking for feedback on its new interface so it can fix any issues folks find. The testing methodology involved over 1,000 speed tests done in New York City using an HTC Thunderbolt (pictured above) and HTC Evo 4G. Both devices were turned into wireless hotspots and an iPad 2 and Toshiba laptop were used to run the numbers. On average Verizon’s 4G LTE network scored 9.10 megabits down, 5.28 megabits up, and a latency of 143 milliseconds. Compare that to Sprint’s WiMAX network that got 1.17 megabits down, 0.66 megabits up, and a latency of 314 milliseconds. Now to be far Sprint’s WiMAX network is older and thus has more subscribers using it, but that’s still no excuse. Sprint’s been actively testing LTE and have been mulling a transition for quite a while now. We should be hearing an announcement regarding the potential switch sometime during the summer.<br/><br/>What we’d like to know is what sorts of results T-Mobile’s new 42 Mbps HSPA+ network is going to get. There should be wireless hotspot devices supporting the new high speed network coming out over the next few months. Initial tests show that T-Mobile is capable of delivering 25 megabits down using a USB modem. It’s going to be a while until T-Mobile releases a mobile phone that supports 42 Mbps HSPA+, but it’ll happen sooner rather than later since networks that fast are springing up all over Europe and Asia at a ferocious clip.<br/><br/>Back to Sprint, the only way they can compete now is on pricing. They’re arguably the only operator that doesn’t have data caps and they don’t even throttle. Want to churn through 100 GB in a month? Knock yourself out. Once they change that policy, if they decide to do so, then there’s no reason to even consider them as your next operator.
