<div class="ex"><img alt="Samsung Galaxy S3 to sport dual-core processor in the US?" src="http://www.new-technology-news.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/snapdragon_generic-470-75.jpg">The Samsung Galaxy S3 may lose its quad-core processor when it heads to US, instead having to settle for a poxy dual-core offering.According to reports from The Korea Times, a Samsung executive has revealed that the US version of the Galaxy S3 will sport the dual-core Qualcomm chip, whereas the international version will pack the powerful Exynos 4 Quad processor.This wouldn’t be the first time America has seen a less powerful version land on its shores, as the HTC One X, which runs Nvidia’s Tegra 3 quad-core chip, was swapped to the dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor.<h4>4G compatibility issues</h4>The reason for Samsung’s potential downgrade has not been documented, but it could be along the same lines as the One X, with some of the latest quad-core chips incompatible with the modems necessary for 4G networks.The Galaxy S3 is seen to be the next major handset on the market, with Samsung confirming that it will be using its new quad-core Exynos chip in the device and reports suggesting it will come with a 4.5-4.8-inch HD screen, 8MP or 12MP camera, NFC technology and Android Ice Cream Sandwich.We’ll know for sure what the deal is on May 3, as Samsung takes to the stage at Earls Court, London, to reveal its next Galaxy device. AMD announces first Fusion chips

AMD is planning various changes to its line-up as 2011 shapes up to be a truly revolutionary year in terms of computing architecture. Designed to coincide with CES and another <a href="">big announcement from a certain other chip manufacturer</A>, AMD's new chips sit on the Brazos platform.The processors used will come in two different guises – a super low-power Ontario processor needing only 9W of power – and the 18W Zacate chip for more mainstream notebooks. AMD has turned its attention toward netbooks – a stronghold for Intel with its Atom chips. AMD is promising huge advances in battery life from netbooks and laptops running these chips – though we'll have to wait until we get kit to see how this really pans out. Not only that, the company also hopes its expertise in graphics will hit home with buyers looking for a low power, portable netbook but who still want DirectX 11 graphics. Bobcat and Bulldozer Both of these chips are based on a new core codenamed Bobcat, based on a 40nm manufacturing process. After Zacate, AMD is planning a 32nm core called Llano, which will be with us during the first half of this year. The company also will debut its long-awaited high-performance x86 multi-core CPU architecture codenamed Bulldozer. <img alt="AMD" src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//classifications/computing/upgrades-and-peripherals/processors/images/bobcat_bulldozer-420-100.jpg" width="420"></IMG> In basic architectural terms, <a href="">Bulldozer looks even more revolutionary than Intel's new Sandy Bridge</A>. With Bulldozer, AMD will do away with the conventional notion of CPU cores and create a much more modular chip designed to deliver a better balance of integer and floating point performance. If Bulldozer manages even to just close the gap significantly between AMD's chips and Intel's Sandy Bridge, that will be some achievement.

Intel chips moving to 450mm wafer size

The change is planned to happen at the company DX1 22nm plant, which is going to be built in Oregon, and made to handle both wafer sizes initially. The 450mm wafer size promises to be more cost efficient by reducing manufacturing costs and letting Intel produce greater quantities of chips that have lower yields (the amount of working chips produced). Going to a larger wafer size allows the company to satisfy the increased demand even with the lower yield that will be almost inevitable as it moves more to 22nm production. Wafer thin mint? There can be problems involved with increasing the number of silicon chips on a wafer, and the new 450 mm wafer could face these. Both increasing the wafer size and shrinking the process size could give some headaches. Intel is trusting that the lower manufacturing costs will more than compensate for this. To date Intel hasn't said whether other plants might be upgraded to support the bigger wafers in advance of its flagship DX1 plant. All that's certain is that it's coming soon.
