Amazon mount charm offensive on major record labels

Amazon is reportedly 'aggressively' courting the four main music publishers to be part of its online music store, but the chairman of one of Sony's music publishing companies has accused the retail giant of mounting 'another land grab'.Amazon launched its iTunes competitor on Tuesday, but the music scuttlebutt is that major music labels were left a little nonplussed by the lack of warning. However, according to the Wall Street Journal, who have spoken to 'people familiar to the matter' Amazon is now mounting a speedy charm offensive to win back the key player in the music industry.Major labelsThe four major labels are Sony Music Entertainment, EMI Group, Warner Music group and Universal Music Group – and a successful music store would need to have the majority if not all of them on board to become a genuine challenger to Apple's hugely popular, and also widely disliked, iTunes. However, at least one section of Sony is not happy with Amazon, with the managing director of Sony/ATV Music Publishing (the joint venture involving Michael Jackson's estate) making his feelings clear."This is just another land grab," Martin Bandier told the WSJ. "I can't make it any plainer than that. It's really disrespectful, and of course we are considering all of our options."Via Wall Street Journal
Related Stories

Radioplayer launches in the UK

 Article

Adobe announces record earnings forecasts

Design and video software specialist Adobe has issued record earnings forecasts considerably above projections from Wall Street, causing shares in the company to surge this week. The Photoshop and Flash developer forecast this week that it will post a profit this current quarter of between 54 and 59 cents a share, beating Wall Street predictions of 51 cents a share. Adobe's projected revenue for the quarter is in excess of $1 billion, slightly ahead of the average forecast of $992 million from analysts. So much for a weak economy battling its way out of recession! Weakness in educational sector Three months ago, Adobe was concerned that it would not meet its forecasted earnings due to recessionary problems in western markets such as the US and Japan. "Overall, the economy has improved a lot since then," Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry told Reuters this week, following the latest financial news from Adobe. The only slightly bad news for Adobe was the fact that sales at its creative solutions business, which develops Creative Suite 5, declined to $542 million in the fourth quarter from $550 million in the last quarter. Adobe put this down to a slight downturn in the educational market in the US and a weak economy in Japan.

Vodafone whips out HTC Wildfire Android 2.2 update in record time

On its Facebook site, HTC said: "Android 2.2 (aka Froyo) on Wildfire is scheduled to begin rolling out this week in Europe, reaching all areas of the world by February. Thanks for your patience as these updates roll out; we think you'll enjoy the final product." February? That's far too long to wait... so it's lucky that Vodafone has managed to bypass the usual faffing about and testing that usually goes on, and is now offering HTC Wildfire Android 2.2 update to the relevant customers. No net video, static backgrounds However, the update doesn't let you see Live Wallpapers or Flash video through the internet browser due to 'hardware limitations'. We'd imagine this is more won't rather than can't - we've seen lower-powered phones manage to perform both these functions and it hasn't been a pretty sight. We're currently calling round the other networks at the moment to see if they'll be offering the update soon, but for now it looks like Vodafone has the jump. If you want to find out whether your phone is updatable then check out the forum page and follow the instructions.

Def Jam game offers budding rappers a record deal

4mm Games is offering potential UK rappers and hip-hop artists the chance of landing a record deal with Atlantic Records, in a competition based around its new Def Jam Rapstar title The recording deal competition is part of a marketing initiative connected to the new rapping game to find new music talent in the UK. "Today Def Jam Rapstar, the first music game dedicated to hip hop, is proud to announce its new partnership with Atlantic Records and HMV as they launch the nationwide search for Britain's best emcee where the winner will receive a record deal from Atlantic Records, home to Jay-Z, TI, Flo-Rida and BOB," reads 4mm's release. "Freestylers can submit their best track using Def Jam Rapstar's innovative freestyle mode with beats from the best producers in the world including DJ Premier, Just Blaze and Cool & Dre." Players can upload their performance to be judged and put forward for a nationwide competition, with retailer HMV sponsoring the promotion via its Gamerbase stores. New discovery "Digital technology not only helps artists reach their audiences all over the world, it also provides us with new ways of discovering talent," said Max Lousada, chairman of Atlantic Records UK. "Rapstar brings those two ideas together in an exciting, cutting edge music experience. Fans will get the chance to explore new music, emulate their heroes and even have a shot at stardom themselves." Players (playas?) can go into HMV stores as of 1 January next year to record their performances or, of course, they can buy a copy of the game and work on their world-beating rap from the comfort of their lounge. 4mm Games also recently announced a partnership with the UK's National Literacy Trust to tour UK schools promoting language skills. "Rapstar's social community not only gives players the chance to perform their favourite hip-hop songs and show off their emcee skills, but it also builds a platform for us to discover new talent," said Kevin Liles, president and CEO, Def Jam Interactive. "Atlantic UK and HMV are the perfect partners to venture into this project and together we will find the next Rapstar." Fancy your chances? Head over to the game's website at www.defjamrapstar.com for more details.
