Tesco offers free international calls over Christmas

As of 25 December, Tesco will allow you to call a landline for free for 10 minutes to countries as far-ranging as Sri Lanka and Iraq. The news comes after the shopping giant surveyed 2,000 people and found that one in six of us will be home alone at Christmas. Call of duty While it didn't exactly do Kevin McCallister any harm, the idea of being alone at Christmas has meant that Tesco, in a moment of altruism and a possible chance you will continue to use its calling cards, wants people to get in contact over Xmas for free. The way you can get the free calls is through the Tesco International Calling Card. Be warned, though, if you go over the ten minutes then you will be charged at the standard rate and the offer is only open on Christmas day. The stack spreads out and the pictures flow from one finger to the other, a moving slideshow that lets you see all of the photos.</LI> <LI>Quick replace: Tap on any previously typed word, then tap on a suggestion to automatically replace it with the suggested word.</LI> <LI>Easy access to special characters (like numbers, punctuation): Press and hold any key to go to the special character keyboard. You can also press and hold the "," key for an extensive punctuation keyboard.</LI></UL> Christmas love for the feathers of discontent What's more interesting is that Google has decided to 'recommend' some applications as those that users would benefit from downloading, with many not created by Google. These include Angry Birds, Shazam and Astro - all apps that many users reach for as soon as they buy an Android phone, but interesting that Google would consider them polished enough for its own blog. And this year there will be freebies available for the iPad, as well as the iPod touch and the iPhone. An Apple a day… Over on the iTunes website Apple says about the promotion: "The 12 Days of Christmas app will allow you to download a free gift from iTunes every day from 26 December to 6 January direct from your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. "Like the music, TV, iBooks, apps and films you receive? The app also offers recommendations of other content that you might like. "Download this free app now and be sure to turn on Push Notifications when prompted. You'll receive an alert every day when your new gift is available."

Unlimited data tariffs looked to be a thing of the past, as networks realised that phones (and users) were getting more data hungry. Hiding behind fair usage schemes was becoming bad for publicity, so most data plans are now offered with set limits. The One Plan However, Three's latest The One Plan is offering what the company terms as a true 'all-you-can-eat" data plan. Sales and Marketing Director, Marc Allera, said: "The One Plan was already a market-changing offer – we've just made it even better. "At Three we've built a network with the scale and scope to meet people's data needs both now and into the future – and with more and more customers choosing to opt for next generation smartphones, this will prove more important than ever." "Everyday thousands of customers buy a smartphone on a two-year contract. The trends clearly show usage grows over time. With its all-you-can-eat data The One Plan will still fit your needs no matter how much data you use.' "We expect to see more people using mobiles than PCs to access the internet by 2015. all-you-can-eat data is designed to remove the possibility of bill shock when you use data, so you can use your smartphone to do everything it was designed for without the worry of cost." Consumption In truth, the majority of people do not consume that great an amount of data – but this offer will bring well-deserved positive publicity for the network. Be warned, though, this is still not a cheap plan and casual users may not want to fork out £25 a month for 2,000 any-network minutes, 5,000 Three-to-Three minutes, 5,000 texts and all-you-can-eat data. But, if you are a power user, this might be right up your street.

We can only imagine that Sony had a truckload of old PS2 tech to get rid of and decided to build it into a 22-inch television set. Of course, despite the television being HD ready, the games are not – meaning you will get standard def old titles. Brilliant or late? "Today Def Jam Rapstar, the first music game dedicated to hip hop, is proud to announce its new partnership with Atlantic Records and HMV as they launch the nationwide search for Britain's best emcee where the winner will receive a record deal from Atlantic Records, home to Jay-Z, TI, Flo-Rida and BOB," reads 4mm's release. "Freestylers can submit their best track using Def Jam Rapstar's innovative freestyle mode with beats from the best producers in the world including DJ Premier, Just Blaze and Cool & Dre." Players can upload their performance to be judged and put forward for a nationwide competition, with retailer HMV sponsoring the promotion via its Gamerbase stores. New discovery "Digital technology not only helps artists reach their audiences all over the world, it also provides us with new ways of discovering talent," said Max Lousada, chairman of Atlantic Records UK. "Rapstar brings those two ideas together in an exciting, cutting edge music experience. Fans will get the chance to explore new music, emulate their heroes and even have a shot at stardom themselves." Players (playas?) can go into HMV stores as of 1 January next year to record their performances or, of course, they can buy a copy of the game and work on their world-beating rap from the comfort of their lounge. 4mm Games also recently announced a partnership with the UK's National Literacy Trust to tour UK schools promoting language skills. "Rapstar's social community not only gives players the chance to perform their favourite hip-hop songs and show off their emcee skills, but it also builds a platform for us to discover new talent," said Kevin Liles, president and CEO, Def Jam Interactive. This is because it allows users to connect to a hi-fi or radio using digital or analogue outputs. At the moment, unless you go down the streaming route or cough up a lot of cash, connecting your iPod to a dock-less hi-fi means you have to use a 3.5mm jack. The problem with this is that the sound gets squeezed. Sound of music The Pure i-20 iPod dock uses PURE Clearsound digital tech to extract the digital signal from your iPod – a method which Pure believes means that you don't have to compromise with sound quality. For those with an analogue setup, there's a Cirrus 4353 hi-fi quality DAC and high-precision low-jitter clock on board to enhance the sound of your tunes. Pure has managed to get its product stamped with Apple's 'Made for iPod' and 'Made for iPhone', so it seems that Jobs himself likes what the audio company is doing. And it will also pump out video content and accepts analogue video formats (component, S-Video and composite), which is a first for a dock. The Pure i-20 comes with a remote control, is priced at £74.99, and is out now.
