The firm cheerfully deleted erotic stories from people's Kindle archives, and it cheerfully booted Wikileaks off its hosting service. 
It's a strange message for a key cloud computing provider to be giving out: you can rely on us, until you can't! We'll take care of your stuff, or maybe delete it! 
So what's going on? In the case of Kindles, people who've bought incest-themed fiction are finding it disappearing - and as Ars Technica <a href="http://arstechnica.com/media/news/2010/12/amazons-latest-kindle-deletion-erotic-incest-themed-fiction.ars">reports</a>, some Amazon reps are then berating customers for their choice of reading matter if they dare to complain. 
It's an interesting turnaround for a firm that just weeks ago was resisting calls for <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-11731928">censorship of much worse material</a>, and it appears to be a mistake: while distasteful to many, incest-themed fiction isn't illegal. 
But it illustrates a bigger concern: why do Kindles need a remote kill switch in the first place? Bookshop staff can't come into your house and take books back from your shelves. Why should Amazon be able to do the electronic equivalent? 
Disappearing on a whim 
And then there's Wikileaks. Amazon flatly denies that it booted the site off its servers following pressure by the US government, although few people believe that. In a <a href="http://aws.amazon.com/message/65348/">statement</a> the firm essentially says that it doesn't approve of what Wikileaks is doing. 
It argues that Wikileaks doesn't own the data it's publishing, and that publishing the data is dangerous - but do you think Amazon would be so zap-happy if it were, say, the New York Times publishing the same information from the same servers? 
It's an interesting contrast to Google's cloud-happy presentation last week, where CEO Eric Schmidt talked about a constantly-connected world where everything you need would live on someone else's servers. I don't recall him waxing lyrical about remote deletion of content you already own, or governments having a quiet word to make things they don't approve of disappear. 
The problem with the cloud is that it's owned and operated by faraway firms whose T&Cs give them the power to do pretty much what they like - so if they decide you shouldn't be reading about getting it on with Auntie Mabel they can reach into your device and delete it; if they decide they don't want to upset a politician or a tabloid they can make controversial content vanish. 
The cloud isn't ours. It's theirs.

In the statement Wikileaks says it has no relationship with the people behind the attacks, <a href="http://wikileaks.ch/articles/2010/Statement-on-DDOS-attacks.html">noting</A>: "These denial of service attacks are believed to have originated from an internet gathering known as Anonymous. "This group is not affiliated with Wikileaks. There has been no contact between any Wikileaks staffer and anyone at Anonymous. "Wikileaks has not received any prior notice of any of Anonymous' actions." Wikileaks hit worldwide infamy in November with the publication of <a href="">250,000 US Embassy Cables</A>. Reflections of public opinion Online group Anonymous has targeted Mastercard, PayPal and State.gov in recent days with DDoS attacks on their websites. One of the 'hacktivists' involved said about the attacks: "It is definitely an information war. The core principle behind it is [that] information is free, governments keep information to themselves, Wikileaks releases them to the general public and the war occurs." Kristinn Hrafnsson from Wikileaks said: "We neither condemn nor applaud these attacks. We believe they are a reflection of public opinion on the actions of the targets."

The controversial site, which this week further irked the US government by revealing embarrassing correspondences from the State Department, no longer has a home on US soil. It will now be hosted on servers in Europe, according to a report by <a href="http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20101201/wr_nm/us_wikileaks_amazon">Reuters</A>. First amendment In response to being sent to Coventry, WikiLeaks issued two statements via Twitter: "WikiLeaks servers at Amazon ousted. Free speech the land of the free--fine our $ are now spent to employ people in Europe." The second read: "If Amazon are so uncomfortable with the first amendment, they should get out of the business of selling books." Suggestions are that government snooping into Amazon's relationship with the site might have factored into the decision, but so far Amazon has refused to comment

At the moment Wikileaks.org is nowhere to be seen and this is because – according to the Guardian – US company evryDNS.net has withdrawn its support. The recent DDOS attack on the site was a step to far for evryDNS.net who said the attacks "threaten the stability of the EveryDNS.net infrastructure, which enables access to almost 500,000 other websites". Another blow This is a major blow to Wikileaks, who was recently thrown out of its temporary home on <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/wikileaks-website-pushed-off-amazons-cloud-912508">Amazon's cloud-based server</A>. Wikileaks took refuge there when the <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/wikileaks-hacked-prior-to-latest-diplomatic-leaks-911423">DDOS attacks</A> took place and effectively used Amazon's server to deliver the <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/wikileaks-sparks-diplomatic-crisis-after-250000-docs-leak-911452">US cables</A> that have moderately shocked all with revelations that there is political in-fighting between some of the biggest countries. That, and Princess Andrew spoke out of turn about something. According to various reports on Twitter, if you really want to access Wikileaks then you can do so by going to its mirror <a href="http://88.80.13.160/">http://88.80.13.160</A>. This 'quad IP' address will not suffice, though – if the site is to stay in the public conscious it will need to get the domain Wiklieaks.org back online. According to evryDNS, it gave the site 24 hours to sort itself out with another providers, saying: "Any downtime of the wikileaks.org website has resulted from its failure to use another hosted DNS service provider." A site of this importance and relevance won't stay down for long, but there does seem to be a concerted effort to make sure it's disrupted from doing what it's doing for as long as possible. UPDATE According to <a href="http://thenextweb.com/media/2010/12/03/wikileaks-resolves-dns-moves-to-switzerland/">The Next Web</A>, Wikileaks is back online thanks to a domain server is Switzerland. For now the new web address for Wikileaks is <a href="http://wikileaks.ch/">Wikileaks.ch</A>, which is redirecting to a specific IP address: http://213.251.145.96/.

However, the move will not affect the online distribution of the diplomatic cable files, which are now being shared via Bittorrent. Cablegate concerns Wikileaks so-called<a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/wikileaks-sparks-diplomatic-crisis-after-250-000-docs-leak-911452"> "cablegate" file </A>containing the leaked diplomatic files is already being widely distributed via Bittorrent, being shared by thousands of users directly online. Wikileaks is moving its hosting back to the Bahnhof ISP in Sweden, according to DNS checking. WikiLeaks confirmed the move from Amazon's server on <a href="https://twitter.com/wikileaks">its Twitter feed</A> this week. "WikiLeaks servers at Amazon ousted," read the post. "Free speech the land of the free--fine our $ are now spent to employ people in Europe." Another Twitter message from WikiLeaks read: "If Amazon are so uncomfortable with the first amendment, they should get out of the business of selling books." U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman said of Amazon's move: "I wish that Amazon had taken this action earlier based on WikiLeaks' previous publication of classified material. China has decided to block the site because it wants to keep its relations with the US, er, happy. Hong Lei, a spokesman for China's Foreign Ministry, said about the new leaks: "China takes note of the government reports. We hope the US side will handle the relevant issues. "As for the content of the documents, we will not comment on that." It's a rather muted response, but one that suggests it is up to the US to sort out where the leaks are coming from before something more serious is released. Name dropped China's name was mentioned in the documents released. It was in connection with the hack of Google which forced <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/google-looks-likely-to-pull-out-of-china-676844">the search giant to pull out of China</A>. The documents said that China's Politburo (a Communist group) was behind the hack.While this isn't proof, it is an allegation that China will certainly want to shy away from. This isn't the first time that Wikileaks has been blocked. It was banned <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/australian-government-takes-wikileaks-off-banned-website-list-585894">in Australia</A> back in May after it released details of what sites were blocked Down Under. The ban on the site in Australia has since been lifted.

It's also shining a light on racist political parties and trying to out those who are actively censoring the web. Wikileaks, for good or bad, is offering up the truth in a way that's not been seen before. Its motto is "to publish fact-based stories without fear or favour" and it's a site run by volunteers who seemingly seek nothing but fact. This week saw the <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/wikileaks-sparks-diplomatic-crisis-after-250-000-docs-leak-911452">biggest leak yet</A> for the site. A total of 251,287 United States embassy cables were put onto torrents for anyone to download. According to Wikileaks, it's "the largest set of confidential documents ever to be released into the public domain." The documents go as far back as 1966 and offering them up to the public has seen the US and many other countries go into diplomatic crisis overload. But this isn't the first time Wikileaks has managed to deliver documents that have embarrassed whole countries and it certainly won't be the last. Below are 8 of the biggest leaks from a website that's only been around for four short years, but has already left a legacy that will last for decades to come. 1. Scientology exposed It's one of the most secretive religions in the world. Founded by sci-fi author L Ron Hubbard in 1952 and now seen as the religion of choice by the Hollywood elite, the methods of the Church of Scientology have been shrouded in secrecy for a long time. Wikileaks changed all this by posting "the collected secret 'bibles' of Scientology" – a whole host of documents that explained the hierarchy within Scientology. The religion and its lawyers were not best pleased. 2. BNP membership list released For some reason, not everybody in the British National Party is happy to have their name associated with the BNP. This became apparent when Wikileaks (and other blogs) <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/world-of-tech/entire-bnp-membership-list-leaked-online-486621">published details</A> of every member of the far-right political part, including addresses and what they did for a living. The document meant that anybody who downloaded the information could CTRL+F their way to finding out who in their hometown was paying the BNP to pedal its non-immigration stance. Teachers were exposed, as were members of the UK police force, which was bad news for the officers – it's illegal to be in the police and support the party. 3. Afghan War logs The leaking of the <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/wikileaks-releases-92000-secret-afghan-war-files-705613">Afghan War Logs</A> put Wikileaks firmly in the public conscience, mainly due to the US government publicly condemning the information that was made available to the public. Talk of torture, the death of civilians and a multitude of cover-ups did not make for light reading, but did show off the true horror of what was seen by many as an unwinnable war. 4. Sarah Palin's email account gets hacked Palin's latest slip of the tongue made her North Korea's latest fan recently, but it was her outed Yahoo email accounts that caused even more embarrassment <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/web/sarah-palin-must-reveal-personal-emails-475667">back in 2008</A>. According to information given to Wikileaks, Palin was using her private Yahoo account to send work messages – a minor faux pas, but one that is strictly forbidden when you're part of the US government. Considering she may well be running for President in the near future, we really hope she doesn't make the same mistake again. Diplomatic crisis Over <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/wikileaks-sparks-diplomatic-crisis-after-250-000-docs-leak-911452">250,000 documents were</A> released this week that detail what the world already new – government diplomats say one thing to the press and another when they think it is in secret. The new documents are yet to be fully sifted but this is a monumental leak at it is the <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/wikileaks-next-release-is-7x-bigger-than-iraq-war-logs-909989">biggest ever of its kind</A>. The leaked information includes everything from Arab nations pleading with the US to bomb Iran, China cosying ever closer to North Korea and even stuff about Prince Andrew and Bank of England head honcho Mervin King. 6. Climate 'research' UK climate researches were put out to dry in 2009 after amore than 1,000 emails and 2,000 documents were leaked about climate change. The documents apparently showed that information which didn't fit with current climate change theories (that it is bad) was suppressed. Quotes such as: "The fact is that we can't account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can't" appeared in mainstream media and began tarnishing the reputation of a number of scientists. 7. Web censorship lists Wikileaks found itself on an <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/wikileaks-has-funds-stopped-due-to-blacklisting-901283">Australia blacklist</A> back in May 2009, all because it released details of sites banned by various countries around the world. While Wikileaks <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/australian-government-takes-wikileaks-off-banned-website-list-585894">is no longer banned</A> in Australia, its publishing of the Australian Communications and Media Authority's list did cause outcry Down Under. The list was interesting because Oz's stance on banned sites was meant to be to be ones that advocated child porn and terrorism. However, Wikileaks found a number of sites banned that did not fall under these banners. 8. Revealing the Bilderberg Group Ah, the Bilderberg Group – up there with the Stone Cutters in terms of secret organisations you can't help but be interested in. While we are not suggesting that the biggest leaders, celebrities and people of influence in the world meeting up once in a while to exchange pleasantries is in the least bit shady, it was interesting to see the Wikileaks posting a number of meeting reports from the group. Unfortunately, while this was a monumental leak since it was one of the first times the lid had been lifted on the Bilderbergers, the minutes weren't actually very exciting. This was because all the names had been omitted (even Steve Guttenberg's) and the Bilderberg Group decided to post the information on its own website anyway.

The leak focused on US Embassy cables (some of which were rubber-stamped secret) and has revealed a number of sensitive talks between high-ranking world diplomats. Some of the most embarrassing information includes conversations between Arab leaders and the US government about whether to bomb Iran. Problems over the instability in Pakistan is also within the documents, as is the growing nuclear relationship between China and Sarah Palin's favourite, North Korea. Leak scandal The UK has also been embroiled in the leak scandal, with news that Prince Andrew has made inappropriate remarks about segments of Britain's police force. There's also information that wouldn't look out of place in a James Bond novel: it seems that the Russian Intelligence Authority has been using the Russian Mafia to do some dirty work for them. The documents released are so far reaching that they even mention the reasons Google quit China in January was because of a member of the Politiburo Communist party, who was angry that he was criticised in a number of articles. This leaking of highly sensitive information is the latest in a long line of 'scoops' for Wikileaks. Not even a DDoS attack on the site could stop the <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/wikileaks-hacked-prior-to-latest-diplomatic-leaks-911423">documents being released</A>. Considering there are 250,000 documents to sift through, expect a lot more to come out in the coming weeks – enough to put diplomats everywhere into crisis mode.

"Currently, the ACMA list of prohibited URLs that is notified to accredited filter providers does not contain any URLs within the Wikileaks website," said the ACMA. "Since April 2010, the ACMA has investigated two complaints about specific pages of content on the Wikileaks website, which both resolved to content found to be not prohibited." Wikileaks <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/internet/wikileaks-hacked-prior-to-latest-diplomatic-leaks-911423">hit the front pages</A> this month, with a new release of government documents that show the inside goings-on of diplomacy in the US. In the dosuments our very own Prince Andrew is namechecked, as is the governor of the Bank of England Mervyn King. ORIGINAL STORY The Australian communications regulator has issued a stark warning that websites who link out to 'banned' hyperlinks are liable to fines of up to Aus $11,000 a day. The news comes after web forum Whirlpool was threatened with the fine for posting a hyperlink to a blacklisted anti-abortion website Wikileaks blacklisted One of the newest additions to Australia's 'blacklisted hyperlinks' list is Wikileaks; the website that publishes anonymous submissions of sensitive info on everything from corporations, religion and governments. The blacklisting of certain pages of the site has come about after Wikileaks posted a list of websites at the tail end of 2008 that comprised the 'secret internet censorship' list for Denmark. On this list were over 3,500 sites that were censored or banned in the country. Disturbing picture While Australia's list of blacklisted sites currently stands at 1,370, the Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that that list could increase to around 10,000 sites – most of which are of illegal pornographic content, but could also includes sites that house incendiary political discussions. "The Government is embarking on a deeply unpopular and troubling experiment to fine-tune its ability to censor the internet," said communications spokesman Senator Scott Ludlam of Australian opposition party Greens. "If you consider this kind of net censorship in the context of Australia's anti-terror laws, it paints a disturbing picture indeed." On its website, <a href="http://www.wikileaks.org/wiki/Australia_secretly_censors_Wikileaks_press_release_and_Danish_Internet_censorship_list,_16_Mar_2009">Wikileaks</A>, which leaked the news that the government had banned it for leaking information, simply said: "The first rule of censorship is that you cannot talk about censorship." Currently, it is not illegal for internet users in Australia to click on the sites found on the web blacklist. The people targeted by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) are webmasters linking out to the sites that the government have flagged up as inappropriate. This could all change, however, if a mandatory internet filtering censorship scheme is implemented – something that is being debated at the moment.

Wikileaks has issued the latest diplomatic leaks to a number of leading newspapers worldwide, with the <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/nov/28/us-embassy-cable-leak-diplomacy-crisis">UK's Guardian publishing the documents</A> throughout this week. Mass DoS attacks Wikileaks said via Twitter over the weekend: "We are currently under a mass distributed denial of service attack." The US state department claims that the latest batch of leaks of hundreds of thousands of secret, confidential messages sent by US embassies will put lives at risk. Other newspapers set to publish details of the leaked embassy messages include the New York Times, Spain's El Pais, France's Le Monde and Germany's Spiegel. "The material that we are about to release covers essentially every major issue in every country in the world," said Wikileak's founder Julian Assange. UK PM embarrassment The latest release of info from Wikileaks follows earlier major leaks of 90,000 secret US records of US military incidents relating to the war in Afghanistan and 400,000 documents relating to the war in Iraq. The latest batch of documents are something of a diplomatic nightmare. Sent to the whistle-blowing site via USB stick, they contain information on numerous countries calling for Iran to be bombed by the US, America's annoyance of aviation tax and Mervyn King's apparent lack of respect for the coalition government and Prime Minister Cameron. It is suspected that the leaks came from US Army private Bradley Manning, an intelligence analyst arrested in Iraq in June. The US state department's legal adviser Harold Koh said the release of the information was against the law and would put lives at risk and that the US government would "not engage in a negotiation regarding the further release or dissemination of illegally obtained US government classified materials," in a letter to Mr Assange.

The US Congress has apparently been warned of further leaks from the whistleblowing site, rumoured to be due within days. Lives at risk Wikileaks' latest plans would put further lives at risk and be a threat to national security, according to the US state department. The Pentagon warns that US military interests could be significantly damaged and that the unofficial release by Wikileaks of diplomatic documents could hard US international relations. State department spokesman, PJ Crowley, said further confidential info leaks would be "harmful to our national security" and "put lives… and national interests at risk".
