Basic Internet Security Tips

It's unbelievable how the Internet has become such an unsafe place. It started out wowing us for the tremendous world of conveniences and entertainment it could offer. But now, it seems that it has become very much exploited by people who can't find anything more decent to do with their lives. When you use the Internet these days, you're always faced with the possibility of being hacked or being infected by viruses, Trojans, worms, and all sorts of online contaminants. It's as if the dangers associated with this technology are endless and we are simply faced with the recourse of being eternally conscious of our online dealings if we don't want to have to deal with corrupted files, poor PC performance or, worst, identity theft. While we can never be a hundred percent free from the risks that abound on the Internet, there are ways we can do to reduce them significantly.

We don't even have to be experts on Internet security. Most of the time, we only need to practice some common sense, discipline and a little paranoia. For example, if you receive email from someone you don't know, suspect this sender right away of having malicious intentions. Most of these are actually hackers who would try to lead you into clicking on a certain link. If you do click on it, you'll end up in their site which is, of course, abundant in all the things created to wreak havoc in your computer. Or a hacker can also have you land in his site so he could set off a certain code to begin remotely accessing and controlling your computer. That means he can steal whatever personal information you have stored in there - maybe your bank ac count number, your credit card number, your passwords, usernames and even confidential information about the company you work for which the hacker can actually market to competitors. You can imagine what damage all that can cause, so it's always safe never ever to entertain emails from anyone other than those you're sure you'll want to take emails from.

Of course, it follows that if you don't entertain unknown people's emails, you don't answer their queries about your personal information. There are hackers who'll send you email pretending to be an employee of your bank and asking for your current usernames and passwords supposedly so your account could be activated. Just remember that established institutions never transact online, not even the phone, when it comes to very sensitive information. Therefore, when you encounter an email or even a phone call like this, ignore it because most certainly a scam.

And then, you'll always want to update yourself about the latest techniques that hackers use to prey on their victims. There's a lot of ways that they can try to dupe you into giving them the information they need so they can advance their selfish interests. Know what these are and do not stop digging the Internet for new information. These people are fast evolving and so are their tricks. Just by being aware could actually save you a great deal of trouble.

Of course, your basic firewall and anti-virus software will have to be enabled properly so content that attempts to enter your system could be duly screened for anything anomalous. Then you'll want to keep a backup of all your files just in case you do end up being infected with a virus.

Basic Fundamentals of Internet Security

Within a very few days the Internet has become one of the most popular platforms of business and communication. The internet unlike any other medium of communication has given a globalized or international dimension to the whole world.

It has become a universal source of information for most people at work, at school or at home. But there also comes the pain along with growth or success. May be it is your increasing pains as a child or the development and growth of this section of our culture that is called the Internet.

Before discussing more we need to explain first where the Internet was originated. Internet is actually the progeny of a military project that is called Arpanet. It was intended to offer reliable communication during the global nuclear war. A huge interconnected computer network was built up through out the world to let the different branches of the NATO and US forces to communicate with each other.

But thankfully the nuclear war never took place and the world had got a vast inter connected computer network which was become completely useless. Universities and colleges started using those computers to share their research works internationally. Eventually it spread out side universities and colleges and made entry into home and business sector. Finally a guy named Tim Berners Lee introduced World Wide Web (WWW).

When you use Internet you share the network with a number of other people. This network offers the resources, which were not possible even fifteen years ago. But sadly something, which is shared, may be subjected to abuse. This abuse comes on the Internet from virus creators and hackers. The only intention of them is to create chaos or/and harm to the computer system of yours as well as the others throughout the world.

As an Internet user if you want to prevent such things from entering in your computer you need to have an Internet security system in your PC. Internet security system, which is the combination of 2 or 3 Internet security products, is not at all complicated as it sounds. The products, which are offered in the Internet security systems, are:

Antivirus software - The most critical and primary element of Internet security system should be anti virus [http://www.supportonclick.com/] software. If you do not want to invite trouble to your PC you should up to date anti virus software regularly. Approximately 300 viruses emerge every month and if you do not take preventive measures properly your PC may get infected within a minute with at least one of them surely.

Anti virus software only protects your PC from viruses, which constantly try to infect it through CD-Rom, word documents, floppy disk, email and the other kinds of computer files. But anti virus software cannot ensure 100% safety to your PC. You need firewall software too along with anti virus software.

Firewall software - Home PC users using firewall software is relatively a new concept. All kinds of Internet connections are 2way process. Data should be sent as well as received by your PC. These data are sent via something that is called ports. Theses things are not physical rather features of the technique your PC communicates online.

Firewall software observe these ports to take care that only secure communication is taking place between your and others computers online. If anything wrong happens it simply blocks the port of your computer to keep you safe from the person who attempts to hack into the system of yours.

It would be easier to understand the function of a firewall if you compare your PC with that of an apartment complex. At the entrance of the complex you may find a security guard who checks every person who are going to enter into the complex. He simply let the person to enter into the building if he knows him/her. But if any unknown person tries to enter he asks for identification. If he/she fails to show a valid reason for entering into the complex he just shows the door to them. Firewall works exactly in that way.

If you are still not using firewall software the time will soon come when your PC will be the favorite destination of the hackers.

PopUp Blocker - You can install a good quality pop up blocker for free. You just have to install them either from Yahoo or Google tool bar. Both of them come with inbuilt pop up blocker facility. Though popups are not extremely harmful but create nuisance.

The simplest rule of exercising online safety is: "If in doubt then don't". If you are unable to recognize an email address, a website or any file or if you have any doubt then do not click the button.

Basic Things You'll Miss if You Buy a John's Phone

Mobile phones today have become so much more than just tools that let us call other people. This is probably the reason why a Dutch man named John Doe Amsterdam came full-circle with the design of the John's Phone. The concept will make you blast to the past - a phone that can only make and receive phone calls; no text messaging, no ringtones. Due to a pager-like (or beeper, as the Americans call them) single-line monochrome display, it is obvious not to expect features like a camera or mobile Internet, that are termed as "basic" in cell phones these days. Although the concept might make sense for people who just want phone calls (or aren't at all comfortable with technology invented beyond the year 1876), you've got to consider this - there are many a basic things that we're so used to doing on cell phones that you'll sorely miss if you get a John's Phone. Here are the Top 4:

1) An Alarm Clock - I don't remember seeing anybody using a dedicated alarm clock since half a decade to wake up. So, while you're buying a John's Phone, might as well pick up an alarm clock too.

2) Searching for a contact - The John's Phone actually has a regular pen-and-paper phone-book slot at the back. So, other than the hundreds of numbers you could store even in an el cheapo phone, there's no quick way to look up a contact as well. Also, you better be good at remembering phone numbers if you're going to buy one; the display won't show the name of your contact when he or she calls.

3) Flash-light - Many inexpensive phones come with a handy LED Flashlight option that to me at least has proved useful quite a few times.

4) Calendar and Reminders - Even on a Rs. 1,000 phone, you are guaranteed to get these basic things - a calendar with a month-view and a reminder function for events. I believe they come in handy to all of us at some point of time.
Now, while the target audience of the John's Phone may not care for any of these things, what they ought to know is this - the damn thing sells for Rs. 4,200 (Euro 70). You get a decent phone with music playback, a big screen and web-browsing for that much in India. So, we feel the John's Phone nothing more than a well-executed marketing pitch to make good dough for the company.

Most institutions offer basic computer classes for students of all ages. The classes enable students to perform basic computer functions as well as understand basic computer vocabulary and technology. The students also learn about common computer components.Computer FamiliarityBasic computer class objectives include learning about the computer hardware and software. Hardware technology includes learning about physical computer parts. Learning about computer programs, or software, includes those that are already installed and those that need to be downloaded to the computer. Many basic computer classes also include significant training on how to use the mouse as well as how to become proficient with using the keyboard. In addition, basic computer classes also involve training in how to troubleshoot basic computer problems, including learning proper startup and shutdown procedures.Operating SystemMost basic computer classes also focus on learning how to navigate the Windows environment for PCs or the Mac OS for Apple computers. Since most computers have some version of the operating system already installed, the classes involve learning about the desktop, task bar, and the start menu that is part of any standard operating system. Students also are made familiar with computer tools, such as the calculator and basic operating system components, such as the title bar, menu bar, tool bars, task bar and scroll bars as well as how to minimize or maximize a window. The operating system environment training also often involves a discussion of safe Internet usage and how to use the Internet technology for various purposes. As part of that training, basic classes also focus on how to use the Internet for communication purposes, such as email, and for research purposes, such as writing educational papers.TroubleshootingAnother important component of basic computer classes is how to handle the computer when it is malfunctioning. This includes dealing with a frozen computer, how to restart or reboot the computer as well as how to properly save all files and work before shutting down the computer. The classes also teach how to locate any misplaced folders and files on the computer. The students are taught how to use vital computer features, such as Help, Find, and Settings, to customize the computer. Students also are taught about built-in keyboard functions for times when the mouse is not working or is not available, so they can accomplish basic computer tasks without it.
