Android 2.3 source code released by Google

Google confirmed the update is not only going to be available for smartphones, but also those with 'extra large screens, such as tablets.' "The source code for the Android 2.3 platform and software stack has been released! This release allows OEMs to begin preparing Android 2.3 for installation on new and existing devices, and allows hobbyists, enthusiasts, and researchers to develop custom builds." From the Nexus to the Galaxy To that end, XDA Developers Forum has already been hard at work to develop a custom ROM for the <a href="">Samsung Galaxy S</A>, although this is a port from the <a href="">Google Nexus S</A> running on the similarly-specced handset, rather than one based on the new source code release. It's not for the faint of heart as yet, given that certain aspects (such as GPS and Wi-Fi) are not quite functioning, but it won't be long until the Android rooters among us will have the next-gen software on a current-gen device.

As of tomorrow (9 December), all contract-free <a href="">HTC Legend</A> phones will be updated to the rather swanky 2.2 OS. HTC announced the news on its <a href="http://www.facebook.com/#%21/htcuk">Facebook page</A>, explaining: "Good news for HTC Legend users. The Android 2.2 update for HTC Legend will begin to roll out across Europe from tomorrow. We're looking forward to hearing your feedback." FroYo is incoming Some HTC Legend users already have Android 2.2. <a href="">Vodafone</A> issued its OTA update earlier this month and Orange followed suit. Android 2.2 will also be coming to the <a href="">HTC Wildfire</A> but there is no date specified for this to happen. HTC had said <a href="">before the end of the year</A> for both handsets and it has so far kept half of its promise. On the feedback of the Facebook post, HTC replied to users who were requesting the HTC Wildfire Android 2.2 update that it was "coming soon".

Earlier this month, Microsoft's next-gen mobile operating system Windows Phone 7 based smartphone had started hitting the U.S. markets. Just before it went en masse, three guys - Rafael Rivera, Chris Walsh and Long Zheng released WP7 unlocker tool - ChevronWP7. With this tool, any WP7 phone can be unlocked and applications can be side-loaded without the need of a developer account. Now, you might be thinking why on earth you would unlock/jailbreak the WP7? To be honest, the first defense would be that jailbreaking for fair use is now legal in U.S. Earlier in July, Library of Congress passed a ruling that unlocking and jailbreaking the mobile phone is legal. Here's a snipped that connects to this 'unlocking' tool. Computer programs that enable wireless telephone handsets to execute software applications, where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of such applications, when they have been lawfully obtained, with computer programs on the telephone handset. Rafael Rivera, Chris Walsh and istartedsomething blog author Long Zheng together devised the ChevronWP7 tool to unlock WP7 device without a Marketplace developer account. Once you've unlocked you can side-load 'experimental' applications that weren't or can't be available through Windows Marketplace - Microsoft's App Store. <img align="baseline" border="0" hspace="0" src="/113582chevronwp7.jpg"> ChevronWP7 is a simple executable file which can be used once a WP7 handset is connected to a PC via USB cable. Just in case you can't get it running, a number of fixes are suggested in the blog post. This tool works with Windows XP SP2 and higher versions. This tool can't perform SIM unlocks and is more of a jailbreak tool. Now this WP7 unlocking tool has raised all the concerns and rumors about Apps Piracy. In response to those rumors, all three guys mentioned in their stand against piracy that they don't condone piracy. Technical aspects are clarified: All Marketplace application XAP packages are sufficiently protected so that you cannot sideload to run them on any unlocked device (official or with our tool). We have no intentions or knowledge to break that protection. (You can still run legitimately purchased and downloaded applications after unlocking) It's like the door of innumerable possibilities has been opened and Microsoft should foresee all possible outcomes in the future. Either Microsoft can patch those holes or let users take the other path where experimental packages can be installed. Clearly, we see another Cydia-like entire Package Manager in the making.

The update brought a selection of fixes, rather than anything especially exciting, including improved reliability with Microsoft Exchange servers and improved stability and performance of graphics applications in games. Other fixes include a fix for an issue with some HP printers, an issue with Wikipedia information not displaying properly in Dictionary and, wait for it, improved Bluetooth pairing with the Apple Magic Trackpad. Camera enthusiasts For camera enthusiasts, the performance of some image-processing operations in iPhoto and Aperture has been improved and it adds RAW image compatibility for additional digital cameras. Another minor issue with Ethernet connections has been solved and last, but not least, Apple has rolled out some security changes. The update can be installed in the normal way through the software update mechanism.
