Firefox 4 for Android launched by Mozilla

Firefox has become a standard bearer for the underdog after years facing off against Microsoft's dominant Internet Explorer on PC, but the mobile sector may well prove to be a tougher nut to crack. Android is obviously a part of Google, which offers up a default browser that is considered one of the best - fighting it out with supremacy with Apple's offering on iOS. "Firefox for mobile allows users to take the Firefox experience they love everywhere and minimizes typing with features like tabbed browsing, bookmarks, add-ons and Firefox Sync," <a href="http://blog.mozilla.com/blog/2011/03/29/mozilla-launches-firefox-4-for-android-allowing-users-to-take-the-power-and-customization-of-firefox-everywhere-2/">explained Mozilla</A>. Sleek "With a sleek new look that hides browser controls when not in use, Firefox allows users to focus on the websites they visit. Firefox Sync gives users seamless access to their browsing history, bookmarks, open tabs, form data and passwords across computers and mobile devices. "Firefox also offers thousands of ways to customize the features, functionality and look of mobile Web browsing with Firefox Add-ons. "Firefox is up to three times faster than the stock browser on Android. Major enhancements to the JavaScript engine make everything from page load speed to graphics to overall performance snappy in Firefox." The app is a meld of Google Translate and Google Goggles and we have to say that after being initially dubious of the promo video, the app actually works. It's not quite perfect, but the signs we tried it on (including a Christmas card) were translated pretty quickly. Found in translation <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/word-lens/id383463868?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D4">Word Lens</A> has been created by <a href="http://questvisual.com/">Visual Quest</A>. While it is free, there is a $4.99 (£3.20) in-app store purchase for the language packs. Currently there is only the option to change Spanish to English or English to Spanish. So if you want to learn your 'por favour' from your 'buenos días' then this is the app for you.

Rovio at a press conference in Finland today confirmed the Bad Piggy Bank sytem would be coming in 2011 for Android users. Angry announcement The press conference was also meant to contain new information about the upcoming PC version of Angry Birds - according to <a href="http://thenextweb.com/eu/2010/12/10/angry-birds-for-pc-to-launch-in-finland-today/">The Next Web</A> - but no UK release date was given. Instead there was confirmation that the game will be coming to Macs, PCs and consoles in the near future. It was also announced that there will be Angry Birds hoodies available for purchase soon to go alongside the plush toys and a cash cow being milked. We may have made that last one up. The timing of the press conference was pretty good considering the world will be celebrating Angry Birds Day tomorrow 11 December. If you are that way inclined there are a number of meet-ups <a href="http://www.rovio.com/index.php?mact=Blogs,cntnt01,showentry,0&cntnt01entryid=48&cntnt01returnid=58">taking place</A> around the globe. The press conference also noted that Finland will be the first to get the Bad Piggy Bank service, in conjunction with mobile operator Elisa. Rovio was quick to eplain that Angry Birds has now managed 50 million downloads overall and 10 million downloads on Android. It seems that it's nothing but good news in the Rovio camp, but those birds are as grumpy as ever.

Lenovo has launched its new All-in-one PC for the Indian market called the IdeaCenter B300. This mainstream PC will be available at all retail outlets and multi brand digital lifestyle retail chains for Rs. 29,990 onwards with a 1-year on-site warranty. 
 
 
The specifications will vary depending on how much you're willing to pay. For the CPU, you have a choice of a Core2 Duo 7600/5400s/Core i range. Memory options start from 2GB DDR3 onwards whereas for storage, you again get multiple choices up to 1TB. The B300 with a 20-inch screen features a 1600x900 resolution where as the 21.5-inch screen will sport a full HD resolution with LED backlighting and multi-touch on select models only.

On the graphics front, we have a choice between the onboard GMA 4500MHD or a ATI Radeon HD5450 with 512MB dedicated memory. The B300 will come shipped with Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit or 64-bit depending on the amount of RAM.

<img alt="PlayStation Phone to be Launched in Feb 2011?" border="0" height="150" src="/113523matter.jpg" width="200"> Sony Ericsson might eventually unveil the purported PlayStation Phone in February 2011 at the Mobile World Congress 2011 in Barcelona. Bert Nordberg, CEO for Sony Ericsson, candidly stated in an interview with The Wall Start Journal that he wants to make loads of "noise" with a new product at MWC and stated that there's no technological difficulty in launching a gaming-oriented phone. Sony Ericsson's gaming-oriented phone has been unofficially being called the PlayStation Phone and images of the same were also leaked on the web. Nordberg in an interview said, "There's a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere. Sony has an extremely strong offering in the gaming market, and that's very interesting." Obviously the PlayStation Phone running Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread or Android 3.0 HoneyComb would be shown off at the MWC conference. Nordberg pointed out that current generation smartphones with touchscreen aren't optimized for games. He was a bit cryptic and unclear on which platform he was pointing at exactly. According to him, the main challenge ahead of launching PlayStation Phone would be negotiating the right issues with the game publishers. Finally, Nordberg added, "Sony is of course a very strong brand, and why shouldn't we use that? Gaming, including content, is a very interesting proposition." We can expect to see the PlayStation Network Integration alongside the normal Android Market on the PlayStation Phone. Last week came in an interesting comment from Sony Ericsson France CEO Pierre Peron stated, "With Windows 7 we run the risk of standardising our smartphones. We would be obliged to compete only on design on price, which we want to avoid," as reported by Telecom Paper.  <img align="baseline" border="0" hspace="0" src="/113523113267psp2.jpg"> Will we get to see any Windows Phone 7 based Sony Ericsson phone at MWC? Probably not. Peron added that the company was still in talks with Microsoft about using WP7, but it prefers Android because Google's operating system allows it to introduce more product differentiation. Basically, Android lets Sony Ericsson place a custom User Interface layer over the OS while a tightly bound WP7 doesn't allow the same easily. Sony Ericsson, as a brand, has no objections in going for a Windows Phone 7 based device. However, Sony Ericsson seems a bit less interested in WP7 phones due to Xbox LIVE integration that directly competes with Sony PlayStation Network. PlayStation Phone running Android seems imminent but the real quest is to find out if Sony Ericsson would work on a Windows Phone 7 device or not. But before that we might get to see the Sony Xperia X12 'Anzu' handset that was leaked on the web recently.

Users who click through to sites using Google's search engine will now get a visual thumbnail of the web page before they go on the site. All they have to do is click on the brand-new magnifying glass icon which will appear with the search information. Or, if you have an affinity to mice, then you can simply use your right arrow key. Vision on "In our testing, we've found that people who use Instant Previews are about 5 per cent more likely to be satisfied with the results they click," said Raj Krishnan, Google product manager, about <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/11/beyond-instant-results-instant-previews.html">Instant Previews</A>. "The previews provide new ways to evaluate search results, making you more likely to find what you're looking for on the pages you visit." Google is hoping to roll out the new functionality this week and it will be available in over 40 languages. The T-Mobile Vibe features a 2.8-inch touchscreen with a QWERTY slide-out keyboard. The handset will be available for £39.99 from launch as a pay-as-you-go phone – making it pocket friendly in a completely different way. Affordable "The successful Vairy Touch series offered an affordable touchscreen user experience for T-Mobile customers," said Nicola Shenton, head of handset and device marketing at T-Mobile UK. "The T-Mobile Vibe reinforces our commitment to delivering the best quality handsets to our pay-as-you-go customers. The new handset will run on Android 2.1 and feature not one, but two touchscreens; a 3.4-inch Super AMOLED top screen for general use and a second 1.8-inch 'ticker' beneath for registering notifications. The ticker, which is a world first, shows your RSS feeds, missed calls, texts and IMs. There's also clocks, weather, media controls as well as incoming texts and call alerts. Grip sensor Working on the theory that it's rude to check your phone every five seconds, you can view the ticker activity thanks to a grip sensor at the side of the phone that lights up that screen alone. The device has a 1GHz Hummingbird processor to ensure it ticks along at a fair pace and, in terms of multimedia, has a 5-megapixel camera with a flash and 720p video capture. It's got 8GB of storage that's upgradable to 32GB. Party pooped Despite such a high profile launch, one has to feel a little for Samsung. Firstly, its party was thoroughly pooped by the Continuum's user manual showing up on US carrier Verizon's website this morning, complete with 360-degree photography. The company has also had to contend with the with the general disappointment that it wasn't announcing the rumoured Google Nexus Two handset. The Continuum will be part of the Galaxy stable, but there's no news yet on whether we'll see it in the UK or whether this is another Verizon US-exclusive.

According to the same source, Google will use the strategy it employed with its <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Google-Nexus-One-Unlocked-Phone/dp/B00332YPHQ?ie=UTF8&tag=techgeezelate-20&link_code=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969" target="_blank">Nexus One</A><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=techgeezelate-20&l=btl&camp=213689&creative=392969&o=1&a=B00332YPHQ" width="1"> smartphone with the launch of the notebook supposedly manufactured by Inventec. This means that it won't be available in retail and only around 60,000 to 70,000 units will be sold.<a name="more"></A> Other pieces of this rumor include HP and Acer which are supposedly to launch gadgets manufactured by Quanta and will include the Chrome OS by December. As with other rumors, please take these with a grain of salt.
