New mock-up images of PSP2 emerge

PlayStation fans are keen (read: desperate) to know what the forthcoming Sony PSP 2 handheld will look like, with the latest mock-up images of the handheld from PSM3 magazine sparking debate this week. The British PlayStation mag has taken everything that it knows about the PSP 2 from developers, analysts, publishers and others and created these images of what its illustrators think Sony's final PSP2 will look like. Sony will not comment on rumour or speculation surrounding the PSP 2, though we expect to start hearing a lot more from Sony Computer Entertainment about its plans for the forthcoming handheld early in 2011. PSP 2 imagineered PSM3's mock-ups of what it imagines the PSP 2 will look like are also based on the real-life 'blurrycam' shots of an early prototype from developers, which originally surfaced earlier this year on VG247.com You can see a full scan of the magazine article over on Gametrailers' forums. Or you might even want to venture out to your local newsagent or WHSmiths to buy yourself a copy of the mag to pore over the images in their full glossy glory. Sony will not comment on rumour or speculation surrounding the PSP 2, though we expect to start hearing a lot more from Sony Computer Entertainment about its plans for the forthcoming handheld early in 2011. However, should PSM3's predictions prove to be on the money, it looks like the PSP2 may well have two thumbsticks, Here's hoping…

Pics of new LG Star superphone emerge

You know those phones that LG promised would be coming soon with Nvidia Tegra 2 power? Well, looks like we've got our first look at one. The LG Star has been snapped over at the Android Forums, and it's packing a number of high end specs that could help the Korean brand get a foothold in the smartphone market. An HDMI port is the obvious place to start, with a little cover presumably hiding a mini-socket with an adaptor in the box. There's also a four-inch screen, although we doubt it's the Super AMOLED variety used by arch-rival Samsung. It's running Android 2.2, but given the close proximity to Android 2.3/Gingerbread being unveiled, we're sure it could be upgraded prior to launch. Faster, better, stronger etc An eight-megapixel camera with LED flash is fairly standard fare these days, but more interesting is the benchmarking: the LG Star outstrips the competition quite markedly, according to the forum poster. CREDIT: Android Forums Assuming the images aren't faked, the LG Star outstrips the likes of the Nexus One and Galaxy S by some margin, which should not only make it super fast, it could also be a lot lighter on the battery too. We were told that Tegra 2-powered phones were going to be given a Q4 UK release date, but given the proximity to the end of the year, we'd imagine the LG Star (which will likely be renamed to fit in with the Optimus line up) will probably be now seen at Mobile World Congress in February 2011.

Sony Ericsson Anzu details emerge

The forthcoming Sony Ericsson Anzu, most likely to be called the Xperia X12 when it launches, has been put through its paces by a Russian reviewer who has managed to get hold of a preview unit. Perhaps the most interesting news is that the preview device tested out was not running Android Gingerbread OS, instead running Android 2.1, with Sony Ericsson looking to launch the device with Android 2.2 early in 2011. The Anzu/Xperia X12 will probably get an Android Gingerbread (2.3) in a later update, post-launch. High-def video phone The Anzu features a large 4.3-inch LCD display with 854 x 480 resolution, an 800MHz Qualcomm MSM7230 processor (the same that is found in the HTC Desire Z) and a 12 megapixel camera. The camera will also be capable of recording 720p video. Initial reports indicate that the Qualcomm chipset offers a nippy, lag-free Android experience, encoding 720p video in H264 smoothly and offering users increased playback times for audio and video. Stay tuned for lots more on the Anzu/Xperia X12 when we get the official word from Sony Ericsson.

PlayStation Phone: new details emerge

New details have come to light about the much-rumoured PSP Phone, including some new shots of the device. The notion of a PlayStation Phone has been around since 2007, but it is only in the last week that images and specs have started to leak.According to Engadget, who seems to have a firm handle of all things PSP Phone related, the Sony Ericsson device definitely has the modest codename of Zeus and is currently running Android 2.2 - but this may change when it comes to market. When it comes to storage, there seems to be a microSD card slot on board and 512MB of internal memory - likely allowing users to pump the internal storage up to around 32GB.Phone and gamesThe chassis of the PlayStation Phone is around 17mm thick, according to Engadget, and looks a bit like a BlackBerry – the phone make, not the fruit. The width of the chassis is around the same as the PSPGo, so will feel familiar to those who have had a go on the PSPGo.Speaking recently to press (and picked up by the Telegraph) Masaru Kato, Sony's chief financial officer did talk about the smartphones and gaming, explaining: "As for the new PSP product... there is a gaming market based on [the] cellphones, and there are many changes that are being seen [with] Nintendo, as well as ourselves, in the field of the product for the gamers."In short: he's telling us there is games market for phones and Sony makes games and phones. Which means that the PlayStation Phone is looking less and less like vapourware each day and could well launch at Mobile World Congress in February.
