Mojang announces new space game called 0x10c

Today, Marcus announced on Twitter that the game is formally known as 0x10c and that a web site has been launched for this game at <a href="http://0x10c.com/">http://0x10c.com/</a>. 0x10c is a space game where spacefarers from 1988 enter deep sleep and wake up at the unintended year of 281,474,976,712,644 AD to discover that the Universe is on the brink of extinction.While 0x10c is still in early development, the web site states that it will be a space game with a one-time fee for single-player games and monthly fee for multiplayer games. At this point, the monthly charge for multiplayer has not been decided. The game will contain elements of what Notch calls hard science fiction, which <a href="http://0x10c.com/doc/hardscifi.txt">he explains</a> is the game being scientifically plausible with “as few hand-wavey things as possible”.The current known features of the game are: 
 <a href="http://0x10c.com/doc/hardscifi.txt">Hard science fiction</a>Lots of engineering.Fully working computer system.Space battles against the AI or other players.Abandoned ships full of loot.Duct tape!Seamlessly landing on planets.Advanced economy system.Random encounters.Mining, trading, and looting.Single and multi player connected via the multiverse. 
 The game will have some interesting features such as a generator that can be used to power your ship and its machinery. The generator will have a fixed wattage, which will be drained as you hook up machinery to it. This makes it so you will have to balance what machinery is running in the event you want to run high powered machinery such as a cloaking device.There will also be a fully functional emulated 16 bit CPU, called the DCPU-16, that you can program to perform a variety of tasks. This also means that you will be able to create your own custom programs that will run on this virtual computer so that it affects the game. For those who have knowledge in assembly, Notch has released the <a href="http://0x10c.com/doc/dcpu-16.txt">full specifications</a> of the DCPU-16 virtual computer.Below we have gathered various tidbits of information that we have gleaned from <a href="https://twitter.com/#%21/notch">Notch’s twitter feed</a>.Single & Multiplayer Gameplay 
 Multiplayer will allow multiple people to crew a single ship.There could be a shopping system for DCPU programs and that players could create their own shopping system.The game will be in the perspective of first person inside the ship.Simple graphics. 
 The proper pronunciation of the game is currently a secret. 
 DCPU-16 Information 
 You can create your own games and software that can be used on the virtual computer while you are waiting for a task to complete.Programs that people make for the DCPU-16 can be traded with other players.For multi-player strategy, players can make malware that can affect other player’s computer. There will be no virus software built in to the virtual computers. Players will have to clean the computer or create their own anti-virus programs.The DCPU is only the CPU. Players will have to create their own operating system to run on it.An emulator will be released at some point.Notch states that he is looking into a memory mapped message queue for the I/O on the DCPU.In order to load programs into the computer, you will need to create a loader.There will be floppy disks and radio arrays.Notch is “aiming at 100 khz at the moment, with hardware sprites and scrolling on the display.” 
 Space Travel & Ship 
 The plan is to be able to orbit planets and drift if you cut the engines.Duct Tape will be able to fix anything, but for a short period of time compared to more advanced methods.

AMD announces first Fusion chips

AMD is planning various changes to its line-up as 2011 shapes up to be a truly revolutionary year in terms of computing architecture. Designed to coincide with CES and another <a href="">big announcement from a certain other chip manufacturer</A>, AMD's new chips sit on the Brazos platform.The processors used will come in two different guises – a super low-power Ontario processor needing only 9W of power – and the 18W Zacate chip for more mainstream notebooks. AMD has turned its attention toward netbooks – a stronghold for Intel with its Atom chips. AMD is promising huge advances in battery life from netbooks and laptops running these chips – though we'll have to wait until we get kit to see how this really pans out. Not only that, the company also hopes its expertise in graphics will hit home with buyers looking for a low power, portable netbook but who still want DirectX 11 graphics. Bobcat and Bulldozer Both of these chips are based on a new core codenamed Bobcat, based on a 40nm manufacturing process. After Zacate, AMD is planning a 32nm core called Llano, which will be with us during the first half of this year. The company also will debut its long-awaited high-performance x86 multi-core CPU architecture codenamed Bulldozer. <img alt="AMD" src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//classifications/computing/upgrades-and-peripherals/processors/images/bobcat_bulldozer-420-100.jpg" width="420"></IMG> In basic architectural terms, <a href="">Bulldozer looks even more revolutionary than Intel's new Sandy Bridge</A>. With Bulldozer, AMD will do away with the conventional notion of CPU cores and create a much more modular chip designed to deliver a better balance of integer and floating point performance. If Bulldozer manages even to just close the gap significantly between AMD's chips and Intel's Sandy Bridge, that will be some achievement.

Although it does not offer a 3D channel, Virgin Media insists that it is building on its 3D content for those people with a 3D capable television. The latest content announcement from the company includes 3D documentaries for its XL TV customers, 3D animations available to all Virgin Media TV customers and on-demand pay-per-view movies. In The Hole! The latter includes The Hole, arriving on 17 January and Despicable Me which will be arriving in February. "This exciting new line-up ofcontent will enable Virgin Media TV customers to experience a close-up of the Sun, explore the lost world of the dinosaurs, uncover the secret world of bats and rediscover the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt all in breathtaking high-definition 3D," said Virgin Media. The Photoshop and Flash developer forecast this week that it will post a profit this current quarter of between 54 and 59 cents a share, beating Wall Street predictions of 51 cents a share. Adobe's projected revenue for the quarter is in excess of $1 billion, slightly ahead of the average forecast of $992 million from analysts. So much for a weak economy battling its way out of recession! Weakness in educational sector Three months ago, Adobe was concerned that it would not meet its forecasted earnings due to recessionary problems in western markets such as the US and Japan. "Overall, the economy has improved a lot since then," Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry told Reuters this week, following the latest financial news from Adobe. The only slightly bad news for Adobe was the fact that sales at its creative solutions business, which develops Creative Suite 5, declined to $542 million in the fourth quarter from $550 million in the last quarter. Adobe put this down to a slight downturn in the educational market in the US and a weak economy in Japan.

The 6500M is pitched to the top end of the market, for people with multimedia and gaming laptops who need speed, and it offers a processor clock speed between 500MHz and 650MHz with a GDDR5 or DDR3 memory clock speed of 900MHz. This top of the line processor boasts 400 stream processing units, 20 texture units, 8 colour ROP units and 32 Z/Stencil ROP nits, pretty nifty by anyone's standards, as it should be, being based on the TeraScale 2 Unified Processing Architecture Mid-range mobility For those who find that a bit too high powered AMD will also have the HD 6300M, a slightly stripped-down version that's geared to the mid-range market. It can only support DDR3 memory interface, and the memory clock speed is 800-900MHz with a processor clock speed of 500-700MHz. There are plenty of eye-watering features, such as AMD's famous Eyefinity multi-display technology – with the 6500M you can have up to six simultaneous displays (but only four for the 6300M) – and AMD HD3D and Direct X11. There's no release date or price for either of these as yet.

The iPad will come in a variety of storage capacities still, with the 16GB costing £199, the 32GB coming in at £249 and the 64GB offering costing a whopping £349. But Orange is also rewarding its existing customers for staying loyal to the brand as well, with the monthly price plans costing £2 a month cheaper. Slightly cheaper chips £25 a month (or £27 for new customers) will get you 1GB of anytime data, and a further 1GB allowance from midnight to 4PM – Orange's so-called quiet time data. On top of that you'll be allowed unlimited *cough*3GB really*cough* Wi-Fi through BT Openzone when out and about – so the upshot is you shouldn't really ever run out of data unless you're streaming the entire internet or something. However, it's predictably not cheaper than buying the iPad outright: for instance, the 16GB 3G version costs £499 to purchase, and £7.50 a month will get you 1GB of data on Three. This works out at £589 over the course of the deal, should you want to sell and upgrade your iPad when a new one emerges (which it obviously will). Compare this to the nearly £900 the Orange deal will cost, and you can see the cost saving. However, we know that many people will just see the lower price tag and get into bed with the fruity network as fast as possible – and for you people, it's good news: <a href="http://shop.orange.co.uk/ipad/">pre-ordering has just gone live</A>.

The computing company took to the stage in New York to show off its new tablet range, while also delivering news of its dualscreen tablet — the <a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/computing/pc/hands-on-acer-iconia-review-910369">Acer Iconia</A>. The smallest tablet announced is the 7-inch Android device. The screen boasts a resolution of 1280 x 800, is 16:10 and has full touch capabilities. It has a front-facing camera and a dual-core processor. This means that Adobe Flash 10.1 is supported. The tablet comes with both Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity and there's DLNA connectivity on board. <img alt="Acer android tablet" src="http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/classifications/computing/mobile-computing/notebooks-and-tablet-pcs/Acer/acer_tablets/Acer_Android%20Tablet_detail_02-420-90.jpg" width="420"></IMG> The 10.1-inch Android tablet has a full capacitive screen, boasts Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity and is just 13.3mm thick. There are also two 1.3MP cameras, one rear and one front-facing, on board. This is topped off with 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity. The Acer 7-inch tablet and Acer 10-inch tablet have a UK release date of April 2011. The 10.1-inch Windows tablet has a UK release date of February 2011. Pricing for all of the devices is to be confirmed.

"At the same time, Acer also developed 'alive' – its next generation store – from the desire to complete the circle of services and solutions offered by all Acer Group brands by adding content, convergency and continuity to the product mix." One place to join them all Acer believes that people's digital content needs one place to live and be easily accessed – although it will be how well it plays with devices from other manufacturers that decides its fate. "There are no limits to the Clear.fi scalability: any Acer branded device will have Clear.fi embedded, and can instantly join the wireless home network and share stored multimedia," added Acer. "Take a photo on your smartphone and when you get home, it will be available straight away on your notebook or TV. Edit a video on your PC and you can watch it back on your TV straight away. "When a friend comes to visit you with his wedding album, Clear.fi immediately detects his notebook and the image library; just select where you want the content appear be played and it's done." Dell's profits were up on its last quarter, despite the minimal four per cent growth in sales to consumers. "We're seeing weakness in consumer demand, and we'll continue to manage that," said Dell's Chief Financial Officer Brian Gladden. "We're improving profit in our consumer business, which is something we've been focused on." Weakness in consumer market Dell Inc reports that sales to large corporate customers were up 27 per cent in the same quarter, while public sector revenue was up 20 per cent and sales to medium-sized businesses were up 24 per cent. Around 80 per cent of Dell's overall sales come from business customers, with many now refreshing old PCs and servers as they emerge from the recessionary cost-cutting and belt-tightening of the last few years. As such, Dell's desktop PC sales were up 21 per cent and server sales were up 20 per cent. CEO Michael Dell said in a statement: "Dell is growing in the right areas, and I'm very excited about our momentum." Dell reaffirmed its forecast for full-year revenue growth of 14 per cent to 19 per cent.

Dell reported a disappointingly small growth in its consumer business this week, although profits were still boosted by computer sales to the business sector. 
Dell's profits were up on its last quarter, despite the minimal four per cent growth in sales to consumers.
