How Data Recovery Works

Losing your valuable data, either by damage to your computer or accidental deletion, is an upsetting situation. Whether the lost files contain sensitive personal information, treasured photographs, or data for your small business, the loss can be devastating. Your data doesn't have to stay lost, however. Data recovery services specialize in restoring files that most people wouldn't think would be recoverable. Keep reading to learn how data recovery services work. Why Data Recovery is Possible The files stored on your computer are all written onto the hard drive, which consists of thin, round platters coated with a shiny magnetic data storage medium, much like the shiny coating on the thin ribbons contained inside VHS and cassette tapes. Just like in a VCR or a tape player, a head inside your computer's hard drive reads and writes the data onto the magnetic storage medium. When you delete a file on your computer, it is not actually erased from the hard drive. The hard drive simply changes the marker on that space from "occupied" to "vacant." The data itself is still there until it is written over. Think of it as a home video that you have decided you don't want anymore. Until you actually tape over it, it's still there. Even once data is written over, it can still be found. This is because the data that is written over it is usually imperfect, leaving traces of the original file. With the proper tools, these traces can be located, deciphered, and - usually - reassembled into complete files. However, the more times an old file is overwritten, the more difficult it will be to retrieve it - so the sooner you contact a data recovery service, the better. What the Data Recovery Service Does When you contact a data recovery service, usually the first thing they will want to know is how the files you want to recover were lost. You might have accidentally deleted the files, or the data might have become corrupted. In a worst-case scenario, your hard drive might have sustained damage, ranging from relatively minor damage such as hard drive crash, to serious physical damage such as flooding or fire. However, the data recovery service most likely won't be able to give you a quote until they have inspected the hard drive, so you will also need to drop off or mail your hard drive to them. Before the data recovery service begins work on your hard drive, they will make an exact copy of the drive. All work will be done on this copy, to avoid doing any more damage to the drive itself. Using the copy of the original drive, the data recovery service then uses a variety tools and techniques to try to recover the lost data. Every hard drive creates a sort of table of contents at the very beginning of the drive; by retrieving old tables of contents, the data recovery service can tell where the files you need would be located on the drive, making it easier to make sense of and restore written-over data. Once the data has been restored from the drive, the data recovery service checks to make sure the files they have recovered are complete. Again, they can use old tables of contents from the hard drive to check for holes in the files. Once they have ensured that the data is all there, they will back it up to CDs or another storage medium, and send it back to you. Data Recovery Service Alternatives and the Risks Involved There are many data recovery software packs available online. These may be pretty tempting, but remember that depending on what you need done, they may or may not satisfy your needs. And even if software can fix your problem, using them without a professional's guidance may inadvertently create more problems, not only ensuring that you will have to use a data recovery service, but also creating more work for them (and therefore a higher price for you). A common type of data recovery software is "undelete" software, which enables you to restore files that you have accidentally deleted. However, remember that when you delete a file the hard drive marks it as available storage. In other words, anything you do after deleting that file - whether downloading undelete software, saving another file, or even just shutting your computer down as normal - can overwrite the data, rendering it impossible to recover without a data recovery service. A way around this is to download the undelete software to a separate drive, such as an external drive or even a USB drive. Unless you know what you are doing, though, you should probably call a professional right away - the longer you wait, and the more you tinker with your computer, the more likely you are to create the need for major data recovery in order to restore your deleted file. Another type of data recovery software is one designed to find and/or fix lost or corrupted files. Again, the hazard is that every piece of data you write to the disk could overwrite the file you are trying to restore. Since the file is lost or corrupted, you cannot trust that the hard drive will know not to overwrite it. Again, immediately contacting a professional is probably the best course of action. Data Recovery Services Protect Your Important Information Because of the nature of a hard drive or another type of memory storage, data loss is not necessarily permanent. An experienced data recovery service can easily help you restore your valuable photos, financial information, or small business data. However, don't forget that when your valuable data has been deleted, lost, or damaged, time is of the essence if you are to get it back: The longer your computer runs, and the more often it writes to the hard drive, the worse the situation gets.

Explained: How MP3 compression works

<img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//Review%20images/PC%20Plus/PCP%20302/PCP302.theory.opener-200-200.jpg"> Ask us to name a universally known file format, and it would probably be a toss-up between MP3 and JPG. Simply put, if you're a fully paid up member of the digital multimedia revolution, you will have thousands of these files on your computer's hard drive – music you listen to and photos you look at – both of which have been compressed to cram as much information as possible into the minimum of space. What is an MP3? The MP3 is a fairly recent invention in digital music and sound. Before that, there was the compact disc, or CD. The audio on a CD is converted from an analog source, such as the master tape (although these days, most audio is recorded directly as digital). The analogue wave can't be recorded digitally as it is, so a digital audio processor is used to sample the analogue audio wave 44,100 times a second. This means, at every tick, the digital audio processor works out the amplitude of the original very complex audio wave. It records this as a two-byte value, so there are 65,536 possible values for this amplitude: 32,767 values above zero and 32,767 below. It does this sampling for the two channels of stereo as well. For a CD, the values of the amplitudes are stored directly onto the CD as a series of pits that the laser in your optical drive can read and interpret. No compression is done on the data stream. Since a CD can store up to 74 minutes of music, we can calculate the storage capacity of a CD: 74 minutes ˜ 60 seconds per minute ˜ 44,100 samples per second ˜ two bytes per sample ˜ two channels = 783,216,000 bytes or 747MB. Furthermore, the I/O channel that the CD uses needs to be able to transfer 176kB of data per second to the digital audio processor (the one that reconstructs the analogue audio wave from the digital data and then feeds it through the amplifier to the speakers). Recording soundwaves The reason for the sample rate and the amplitude measurement is fairly mundane. Suppose we're sampling the waveform shown in Figure 1. <img alt="Figure 1" src="http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/Review%20images/PC%20Plus/PCP%20302/PCP302.theory.figure1_pos-420-90.jpg" width="420"></IMG> If we sample at too low a rate, we may miss some peaks and troughs in the original audio and so the resulting waveform may sound completely different and muddy. <img alt="figure 2" src="http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/Review%20images/PC%20Plus/PCP%20302/PCP302.theory.figure2_pos-420-90.jpg" width="420"></IMG> Figure 2 shows this scenario, where the resulting waveform in red looks quite different from the original. We therefore need to sample much more often. Given that the human ear (in general) only hears a tone up to about 20kHz in frequency, we should therefore sample at least twice that rate in order to properly capture the highs and lows of the audio wave at that frequency. With a fudge factor added just in case, the rate settled on was 44,100Hz. <img alt="Figure 3" src="http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/Review%20images/PC%20Plus/PCP%20302/PCP302.theory.figure3_pos-420-90.jpg" width="420"></IMG> Figure 3 shows a different problem: the number of possible values for the amplitude is fairly small. From the original measured amplitude, the processor must choose the closest value it can record. Here we've got a fairly high sample rate, but the measurements of the amplitude are pretty coarse. Again, the resulting waveform looks different from the original – a little more subtle perhaps, but it could still alter the sound pretty badly (highs might be higher than the original, for example, making the result more shrill and meaning that subtle nuances in the music are lost). Here, a different criterion comes into play: making the sample values fit into a whole number of bytes to help make the output DAC's job easier. One byte would be far too small for this (with only 256 different values for the amplitude), so the original designers decided on two bytes per sample. There things stood until the age of the personal computer and the internet. A three-minute track on a CD (which is the length of a typical pop song) occupies 31,752,000 bytes, or just over 30MB. Downloading a CD track using a 9,600 baud modem would take hours, and would still take well over an hour on a 56K dialup modem (the fastest retail modem before broadband became mainstream). On a typical broadband connection (12mbit/s download, for example), that track would take under three minutes to download, meaning you could just about stream it while listening to it. The solution would seem to be to compress the digital audio data. As it happens, compressing a typical CD track with something like the Deflate algorithm in Zip doesn't actually give many space savings. The reason is the data stream exhibits randomness: the two-byte accuracy of the sampling means that even similar pieces of music encode slightly differently, negating the benefits of dictionary compression algorithms such as Deflate. Random data doesn't compress, so CD tracks don't compress terribly well at all. Trimming the edges The next solution is to use a lossy compression scheme. Such a scheme essentially throws away unimportant data in order to make the result more compressible. On decompressing the data, the algorithm doesn't produce exactly the same output as the original input, but we don't notice the difference. This kind of algorithm is therefore only of any real use for things such as images, video, and audio. For images and photos, the archetypal lossy compression algorithm is the JPG file format. The vast majority of lower-end digital cameras produce JPG images as a matter of course. The reasons are primarily to do with smaller file sizes: more photos can be stored on the camera's internal flash storage, and transferring photos to a computer takes less time. Of course, the fact that the vast majority of digital photos are only viewed on a computer screen (sometimes as thumbnails more often than full size) and never digitally manipulated that much means that JPGs are more than sufficient. High-end DSLRs and professional cameras use a RAW format, which, although it may be compressed, isn't lossy-compressed. We don't usually notice that JPG is a lossy compression format because the algorithm only discards information that the human eye would have difficultly perceiving when viewed alongside other parts of the photo. With audio compression, we take advantage of the imperfect nature of the human ear to help us identify (and discard) unimportant parts of the music: there are frequencies we can't hear, there are frequencies we distinguish better than others, and when two sounds play at the same time, we hear the louder sound rather than the softer one. Why use MP3? The MP3 algorithm uses these details to remove those sounds we can't hear (or have difficulty in perceiving among the rest of the audio) to simplify the data stream to make it more compressible. The idea is to tweak things so that the removed data does not hurt the quality of the audio for the eventual listener. Nevertheless, to make things plain, MP3 cannot produce CD quality audio since it eliminates information from the data stream; instead we call the result near-CD quality or even FM quality. However, the compression ratio we obtain is truly remarkable: three minute MP3 tracks are typically between 3MB and 5MB in size – about an order of magnitude smaller than the original CD track. The MP3 algorithm has a single tuning knob that enables us to determine how much information is thrown away. Some people will be fine with increasing the lossy part of the compression algorithm because they only listen to MP3s in a noisy environment – in a car or a busy office, for example. Within a noisy environment, you won't hear the most subtle sounds, so it makes sense to optimise for file size rather than audio quality. If you're listening to music in a quieter environment, such as at home in your living room, you may be more aware of the loss of quality and not so bothered by file size. The lossy algorithm tuning knob is known as the bit rate. Bit rates are measured in bits per second; MP3 varies from 96kbps to 320kbps. At the low end of the scale, 96kbps or 128kbps is equivalent to FM radio. At the high end of the scale – say 256kbps to 320kbps – the sound quality is comparable to that of a CD. The speed of sound Remember that a CD delivers data at a rate of 176KB/s, or 1,400kbps. This means that a song saved at the 96kbps bit rate is roughly 1/14 of the size of a CD track. At the 256kbps bit rate, files are about a fifth of the size. So, for example, if your car's CD player can play MP3 CDs (that is, data CDs containing MP3s), you'll be able to put five times as many 256kbps bit rate MP3 tracks on the CD as you could on a standard audio CD. The burning question then is: which bit rate do you go for when you want the best sound you can get for the smallest file size? The only subjective variable here is quality: what I might deem as acceptable quality, you might cringe at, or vice versa. Various experiments have been conducted and it's been discovered that, in general, people can't tell the difference between an audio track encoded as a 256kbps MP3 and one from a CD. The only significant statistic is that if you know a particular track very well from CD, you're more likely to spot an MP3-encoded version of it than if you're listening to a track you've never heard before. The MP3 file format was designed to contain more than just the lossy-compressed audio data. The file consists of a set of MP3 frames, each comprising a header and corresponding data. A set of frames may be enclosed inside a tag to indicate that the frames are describing something special, such as metadata about the MP3 track (the artist's name, title, album, track number, musical genre, album art and so on). Add your own data Although the MP3 standard doesn't define its own standards for these metadata tags, there are two that have grown into standards through being recognised by several audio players. These are the ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags – although there's also a new one called APEv2, which is gaining familiarity and approval. On playback, the metadata tags are generally read by the audio player, so that relevant information can be displayed for the user. Although many CD rippers create metadata for your tracks and embed them in the MP3 files (and programs such as iTunes enable you to edit the metadata for your tracks), there are MP3 tag editors that allow you to manipulate the metadata at a finer level, or in block mode. All in all, MP3s have changed the music environment for good. Although you can still buy CDs – or if you're really old-school, vinyl – most people consume their music through MP3 or AAC. Online retailers such as Amazon and iTunes help you buy MP3s for immediate download and gratification. Online radio stations, including Pandora and Spotify, enable you to listen to lossy-compressed streamed tracks without the need for purchase. Programs like iTunes and Windows Media Player enable you to rip your CDs as MP3s onto your hard disk for later listening. Audio players such as the iPod and Zune let you to listen to your MP3-encoded music wherever you want to. In short, MP3s are here to stay.

In Depth: How social engineering works

<img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//Review%20images/PC%20Plus/PCP%20301/PCP301.make5.bodyimage3-200-200.jpg"> <DIV class=almost_half_cell id=gt-res-content> <DIV dir=ltr>Social engineering means different things to different people. If you are a conman in a street corner, social engineering is a way to get money from unsuspecting players and stealing goods. If you're in a pub, is a way to ensure that you come first served basis. If you are a magician, may form the basis of an operation. If you are a seller, is a way to get more sales. But if you're a hacker, that social engineering is much more: it gives you the ability to get what you want from people. You can not give you passwords, credit cards, including access to secure areas. Many other cyber attacks requires an element of social engineering and the techniques used are so advanced in other areas of online crime. In their hearts is the basic human tendency to trust authority, and that confidence is often very high price as more and more people are discovering. Microsoft is calling There is a new social engineering attack making the rounds, which is designed to get you to give away all the details required for using your credit card. Interestingly, it exploits the use of your computer at all, just pretending that there is a problem with it. The attack begins with an unexpected phone call, and is a great way to learn about how devious social engineering attacks can be and arm yourself against it and similar approaches. All successful social engineering hacks start with a process called pretexting. This creates a believable reason for the attacker by making initial contact. Fear and greed are major human factors motivating, so the excuse is usually carefully designed to set the scene, giving the person who attacked the feeling that we have either inadvertently done something terribly wrong, or is at risk for losing something worthwhile. The new scam starts with a call supposedly from your ISP or even the same Microsoft. Obviously the cold light of day that Microsoft is not ready to start asking individual users at home, and not necessarily know who those users, but a carefully crafted excuse to call can make everything seem innocent and quite reasonable. Simply calling a random number from the phonebook and insisting you are from Microsoft, is not enough to make the fraud work, however. The call must be set in a believable context. This is achieved by playing a recording of a busy office in the background while the call is made. The victim of course assumes that noise is really, perhaps a large call center, which lends an air of the state of authenticity. The caller should also appear to be in authority. The caller explains that Microsoft has had complaints that the victim's computer is sending spam, or maybe worse. He could still give some examples and ask the victim to report truthfully if he or she has no knowledge of what is happening. The fear that a statement like this can create in the minds of those not well versed in online safety can be enough to gain full compliance with whatever instructions follow. fear factor After ramping up the fear of accidentally doing something wrong, phrases attacker's instructions to sound like an easy way out of the situation. He says it does not matter because it can solve the problem almost immediately. With the permission of the victim can access the annoying computer and remove the supposed malware, further explaining that to keep things legal, I had to call to obtain permission from the victim. In a situation like this, the naive computer user is more likely to accept this seemingly simple and formal way out of a sticky situation. For an attacker, however, this certification mark indicates that the victim is under the influence. To further cement the belief in the authenticity of the call, and to deepen its control, the attacker can ask the victim to open a command prompt, displays the computer's IP address using the command ipconfig, and to call to confirm that the right computer to access before proceeding. The fact that the IP address is local to the ISP of the victim and can not be seen from the wider Internet also shows the attacker that the victim is both ignorant and compliant.</DIV></DIV> <img alt="US department of homeland security" src="http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/Review%20images/PC%20Plus/PCP%20301/PCP301.make5.bodyimage4-420-90.jpg" width="420"></IMG> There are then several minutes of apparent typing as the attacker claims to be access to the victim's computer, possibly uploading anti-malware software to clean the system and confirming that everything is okay. The attacker then gets the real purpose of the call: the end. He explains that the victim, unfortunately, will have to bear the cost for the service you just provided. After all, the user would leave the PC to get into such a miserable situation. It's nothing expensive, just a few pounds at the time the engineer. However, he explains, the victim can make a saving on this bill, paying now, over the phone. All you need is a credit card. You can guess the rest. The victim believes that the computer has been determined, and that Microsoft is great for this purpose - until the last bill of the next credit card. The assumption of trust in the person requesting the information, created with attention to detail on the side of the aggressor, coupled with ignorance of the realities of online life, make it a social engineering attack that we're sure to see many more in the coming years. Indeed, one of the characteristics of the information age is how malicious activity evolves and develops over time. Old Hacks never die, just evolve, and social engineering is no exception. Call for help Some social engineering attacks need not be so well designed, carefully targeted soon. In Japan, a highly successful form of attack is becoming big business cynically targeting elderly victims with a blunt demand. It begins when the victim receives a frantic phone call. "I am! I'm in trouble and will have to transfer money quickly," is the type of call no parent or grandparent ever wants to receive. For an elderly relative, can be frightening. As with the offensive phone Microsoft, the attacker provides an immediate way out of trouble. Transfer of several thousand yen to a service or wire transfer bank account and everything will go well. Despite the bold simplicity of the «Hey, I am!" Attack gains in popularity each year. According to Symantec, the Japanese National Police Agency recorded 20,000 cases in 2008 - up from 17,930 in 2007. In some areas, police officers, even and assigned to the site to warn people about the problem. The Japan Times first <a href="http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nn20031121b6.html">reported the problem back in 2003</A>. In that year alone, 2,768 victims parted with 2.26 billion Yen (about £17 million). Social engineering is a type of oil that lubricates the wheels of many online scams, phishing on Ebay from drawbacks. With a situation to appear as a genuine and urgent as possible, such techniques can be used to get what you want, and this extends to gain physical access to areas where you might otherwise be barred. The key is to appear like you're supposed to be there by preying on the case of others. Direct access The simplest method is just to tailgate someone. So, have someone hold an otherwise safe door open while you follow them through it on the pretext of having left your security to go through. <img alt="University of toronto students" src="http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/Review%20images/PC%20Plus/PCP%20301/PCP301.make5.bodyimage2-420-90.jpg" width="420"></IMG> <DIV class=mf-related> <DIV class=almost_half_cell id=gt-res-content> <DIV dir=ltr>A classic method of carrying out this attack is to find out where the company goes smokers to indulge in their habit. Just hanging around holding a lit cigarette (no need to breathe if you do not smoke) may be enough to establish you as someone who has the right to be there. When someone makes a move to return to the building, just patting your pockets, uttering an expletive and asking if they let you is usually enough to gain access. The lesson here is to never leave anyone in a building that is not personally known to you. Give and take Another social engineering attack, called the return (Latin for "something for something") can provide direct access to the systems, the passwords of a company and other information - as long as the attacker appeared to give something in return. A very popular form of this attack is common in the U.S.. The attacker, having discovered the range of direct dial numbers for the target company, will ask each of them in random order under the pretext that the department and return a call to the help desk. The idea is that eventually he would stumble on someone who really need help with an IT problem. The victim is more than happy to do what the caller says in return for consideration immediately fix - including disabling antivirus protection, then download and install malware on their computers under the guise of creating software patches. Eradication of social engineering from legitimate callers is simple. The golden rule is: if you hear it looks very good and convenient to be true, it usually is. If you are in any doubt that we are dealing with a legitimate caller, especially if you take the call unexpectedly and the person at the other end is demanding a high level of personal detail, not angry or abusive, especially if you have caller ID and the visitor has withheld the number. A better idea would be to say that you are busy, ask for a phone number and say they will call at a time convenient for you. If the person at the other end making a legitimate investigation, he or she will be more than willing to give you information and a number of problems as a reference. If the visitor makes excuses, or to insist on the required information listed immediately know that it is possible to speak of a social engineer. In cases like this, state your suspicions calmly and clearly, then wait quietly for an answer. It is likely that the line will freeze the scammer realizes that the game ended.</DIV></DIV></DIV>

Penetration Testing Works

In the 1960's, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology developed the concept of hacking. The term originally referred to students that slacked off in class or who hardly bothered to attend. Of course the original term for "hacking" had absolutely nothing to do with computer technology. However, "hacking" is a borrowed word from the hackers who explored buildings, and roofs, and things they had no business delving into. Hence, the computer hacker, whose world evolves around computers, brings me to the subject of penetration testing and how to make it work. Penetration testing is a type of hacking, from a permissible angle. The penetration tester, or "Black Hat Hacker" evaluates the safety of a computers system by simulating a threat of an assault from sort of malicious source. In order to make penetration testing work, it is vital for the public to become familiar with the idea of this type of "legal intrusion into a computer system", because in the long run it serves to provide more safety in favor of our own computer systems. The media publishes lots of negativity with regard to ""hacking". For instance, we've all heard about the famous "Hack Pack" gang out of Florida, the largest identity theft crime at the time, hundreds of peoples' credit card information stolen as a result of computer hacking., not to mention the fact that as computer users, we are constantly reminded on a daily bases to update the security software on our own computers. But, regardless of all the negativity, hacking, penetration testing, which ever name we want to call it, is not bad at all. Without hackers, there would be no way to keep our computers safe. Penetration testing will definitely benefit the large masses that depend on computer technology, regardless of any negativity associated with hacking, because, we need it period. The past 40-50 years has shown tremendous stride in technology, no doubt, most of those strides are the result of the playful hackers and the serious penetration testers.

Cloud Computing - What it is and How it Works

Nowadays, the concept of Cloud Computing is an emerging IT delivery model. It is a rising computing technology that uses both the Internet, and central remote servers, located within the Internet, to maintain data and applications. The technology lets consumers, enterprises and businesses, to use applications, without having any need for software, or hardware installation, providing an always on access capability, to their files at any computer with Internet access, at any place and any time. The Internet is basically the, "cloud" for all the applications, and services that are available to be accessed by subscribers. A person simply has to log into their desired computer application - for example, a sales force or office automation program, a web service, a data storage service, spam filtering, or blog sites. Usually, you get access to these programs by monthly or annually paid subscriptions. This technology allows for far more efficient computing by centralizing storage, memory, and processing.Cloud computing, basically consists of hardware, and software resources, which are made available on the Internet. These are specifically known as cloud computing services. These services normally, provide access to advanced software applications, and high-end networks of server computers. The services of this technology can be chiefly divided into three categories: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS).Cloud computing has become very significant, in the IT and business world. This is due to the countless benefits driven from this concept. Advantages can be obtained from this massive web infrastructure by both small and medium sized businesses. Moreover, many huge enterprises and governments are now shifting towards cloud computing, because of its greater significance and importance.Cloud Computing, is in frenzy these days, because it can considerably reduce IT costs and other technology complexities, whilst improving workload optimization, and service delivery. The technology is extremely scalable. It provides a superior user experience.Furthermore, it hardly requires any time to be arranged, and established since there is no need to buy hardware, software licenses or their implementation services. Also unlike other services, there are only skilled practitioners, dealing in cloud computing. Normally, whenever any technology becomes all the rage and is recognized, a lot of people start to become more interested in it. In the case of cloud computing, vendors; specifically the more reputable ones, offer their customers very reliable services, with unlimited storage and computing capacity. Some of these vendors include Microsoft, Google, IBM, Yahoo Inc. etc.In cloud computing, there are two basic general types of clouds: public cloud and private cloud.
