How to Replace a D600 Power Jack

<P>Shut down the Dell D600 and unplug the AC adapter. Turn the <a href="">computer</A> over, slide the battery release latch towards the outside edge of the computer and lift the battery out.</P><br /><P>Remove the screw along the right side of the computer, open the display approximately a half-inch (while still upside down) and slide the hard drive out of the system.</P><br /><P>Remove the screw on the memory module cover on the bottom of the laptop and lift the cover off. Press the white tabs around the installed memory modules outward and extract the memory.</P><br /><P>Turn the computer over and open the display. Pry the edge of the center control cover up using a plastic scribe and remove it. The center control cover is located directly above the keyboard.</P><br /><P>Remove the two screws at the top of the keyboard and lift the top of the keyboard up. Slide the keyboard towards the display to unlock the tabs at the bottom, then disconnect the ribbon cable below the keyboard. Remove the keyboard and set it aside.</P><br /><P>Open the display a full 180 degrees. Remove the screw that connects the display cable to the computer, located below the center control cover. Disconnect the cable.</P><br /><P>Remove the three hinge screws that secure the display (two on the left hinge and one on the right). Rotate the display approximately 90 degrees and lift it directly off the laptop. Set the display aside.</P><br /><P>Remove the three screws labeled "Circle P" below the center control cover. Disconnect the touch pad connector from the system board. The touch pad connector is directly above the touch pad, beneath the keyboard.</P><br /><P>Turn the laptop over and remove the nine screws on the bottom of the laptop (eight screws along the edge and one in the center). Pry the top cover and bottom cover apart with your fingers. Separate the two covers and remove the top cover. You now have access to the system board.</P><br /><P>Hold a soldering iron in one hand and a desoldering pump in the other hand.</P><br /><P>Heat up the soldered joints where the power jack connects to the motherboard using the tip of the soldering iron, until the solder melts. Quickly move the tip of the desoldering pump near the molten solder and press the actuator button on the desoldering pump to suck up the melted solder. The power jack is along the back edge of the board. Repeat this step, removing as much solder as possible.</P><br /><P>Grasp the power jack with a pair of needle nosed pliers and continue heating up the soldered joints. Gently tug at the power jack with the needle nosed pliers until you can remove it from the system board. Dispose of the old power jack.</P><br /><P>Clean the area on the system board where the power jack fits with isopropyl alcohol and a toothbrush, removing any impurities on the system board. Brush gently so you don't damage the board. Allow the alcohol to dry completely.</P><br /><P>Insert the pins from the new power jack into the appropriate points in the system board. Apply solder to each pin on the motherboard until the power jack is secure.</P><br /><P>Reassemble the D600 following the disassembly instructions in reverse.</P>

<P>Place the motherboard on a durable surface. Molten solder is extremely hot and will damage heat-sensitive surfaces and cause a fire hazard, so use a metal or solid wood surface. Turn the motherboard over onto its back.</P><P>Plug the soldering iron in and allow it a few minutes to heat up. A hot soldering iron is much easier to use than one that hasn't reached its peak temperature. While the iron is heating up, inspect the connection points of the jack to familiarize yourself with what you will desolder.</P><P>Place the soldering iron in one hand and the copper braid or desoldering pump in the other. Use the iron to melt the solder and suck it up with the pump or the braid. Hot solder may drip through to the other side of the motherboard, so make sure your hands are clear of that area. When you have removed as much solder as you can, continue to Step 4.</P><P>Replace the pump or braid with the needle-nose pliers. Use the iron to heat any residual solder and gently pull the jack free with the pliers. Do not rush or try to force the jack. You may damage the delicate electrical trace, which will require further, extensive repair.</P><P>Place the old jack aside. Use caution; it may be hot. Use the toothbrush and alcohol to clean the area. This will help keep the new solder clean and facilitate a stronger bond to the board. Leave the board to sit and dry. The alcohol will evaporate by itself.</P><P>Use the rosin-core solder and the iron to lightly coat the connection points on the motherboard where the new jack will sit. Install the new jack and apply some more solder to the connectors. When the area has cooled, plug in the power adapter and look for any lights indicating that the motherboard is receiving power. Reassemble the laptop.</P>

The tools in the program can be used to isolate the background and change it to a different color. Click on the original photo layer, then navigate to the toolbar menu, and select "Layer," followed by "Duplicate Layer." Rename the layer in the window that opens, then select "OK." A new layer will appear in the layer's pallet.</P><br /><P>Choose the "Polygonal Lasso" tool from the toolbox to select the portion of the image that is to remain untouched while replacing the background color. Place the mouse pointer onto the edge of the object, and click on it to make the first anchor point. Move the pointer around the object to outline it, making occasional anchor points, until the last point and first point meet.</P><br /><P>Isolate the background to replace the color by choosing "Select," then "Inverse," from the toolbar menu. The background will automatically become selected. Use the "Eye Dropper" tool in the toolbox to select a color from the "Color Pallet" in the work window, then click on the "Paint Bucket" tool, also located in the toolbox.</P><br /><P>Click on the background with the paint bucket tool to add the new color to it. Click on sections of the background that do not paint individually to add the new color. Deselect the background selection once the color has been replaced by pressing the "Control" key on the keyboard, followed by the "D" key.</P><br /><P>Save the changes made to the photo by selecting "File," then "Save As," from the toolbar. Choosing "Save As" will permit the original photo file to remain intact. <P>Lift open the top cover of the printer.</P><P>Lift the toner cartridge out of the machine using the handle.</P><P>Look down into the area vacated by the toner cartridge and locate the transfer roller. It will be a fairly slim and long black roller with a white gear and bushing on the left and a black piece to slide into on the right. Using the pliers, pinch the tabs on the white bushing on the left and lift the transfer roller shaft out and to the left of the printer.</P><P>Install the new transfer roller by sliding the right end first into the black piece on the right side and then placing the left end through the bushing and into the left side. Make sure to line the grooves on the bushing with the spring below it to ensure proper installation.</P>
