Plain white photo backgrounds can replaced with more colorful ones.Photographs can sometimes be taken against a background color that is unflattering or abstract. To replace this backdrop, computer users can import the image into a design program such as Adobe Photoshop or Corel Paint Shop Pro. The tools in the program can be used to isolate the background and change it to a different color. Upon completion, the photo can be used in a photo collage or be added to a video project.
Open the photo file in the design program by selecting "File," then "Open," from the toolbar at the top of the window. Click on the photo file from the window that appears, and select "Open" to import it into the project.
Change the size and resolution of the photo after opening. Select "Image," then "Image Size," from the toolbar menu. Enter a numerical value into the height and width boxes of the "Document Size" section, then enter a value for the resolution. Photos that will be printed should have a resolution of 300 pixels per inch (ppi), while photos that will be used for video should be at 72 ppi. Select "OK."
Duplicate the original photo layer in case an undesired effect occurs while replacing the background color. Click on the original photo layer, then navigate to the toolbar menu, and select "Layer," followed by "Duplicate Layer." Rename the layer in the window that opens, then select "OK." A new layer will appear in the layer's pallet.
Choose the "Polygonal Lasso" tool from the toolbox to select the portion of the image that is to remain untouched while replacing the background color. Place the mouse pointer onto the edge of the object, and click on it to make the first anchor point. Move the pointer around the object to outline it, making occasional anchor points, until the last point and first point meet.
Isolate the background to replace the color by choosing "Select," then "Inverse," from the toolbar menu. The background will automatically become selected. Use the "Eye Dropper" tool in the toolbox to select a color from the "Color Pallet" in the work window, then click on the "Paint Bucket" tool, also located in the toolbox.
Click on the background with the paint bucket tool to add the new color to it. Click on sections of the background that do not paint individually to add the new color. Deselect the background selection once the color has been replaced by pressing the "Control" key on the keyboard, followed by the "D" key.
Save the changes made to the photo by selecting "File," then "Save As," from the toolbar. Choosing "Save As" will permit the original photo file to remain intact. Enter a name for the photo file in the "File Name" box, select a file type and the destination, then click "Save."
