UK judge says internet might 'kill jury system'

The UK's Lord Chief Justice, Lord Judge, has said that social media may well undermine the very basis of the rule of law in the UK. Lord Chief Justice, Lord Judge, raised his concerns about the use of the internet by jurors in a lecture published this week. In his opinion, rampant social networking amongst jurors and online sharing of confidential information is increasingly undermining jury trials. Fair trials threatened? England's top judge has said: "If the jury system is to survive as the system for a fair trial... the misuse of the internet by jurors must stop." Lord Judge is the most senior judge in England and Wales. He claims Twitter and Facebook make it far too easy for campaigners to put pressure on jurors in a trial. "We cannot accept that the use of the internet, or rather its misuse, should be acknowledged and treated as an ineradicable fact of life, or that a Nelsonian blind eye should be turned to it or the possibility that it is happening," said the Lord Chief Justice He added: "We cannot stop people tweeting, but if jurors look at such material, the risks to the fairness of the trial will be very serious, and ultimately the openness of the trial process on which we all rely, would be damaged. "If it is not addressed, the misuse of the internet represents a threat to the jury system which depends, and rightly depends, on evidence provided in court which the defendant can hear and if necessary challenge." The Lord Chief Justice wants to see warnings that misuse of social networks by jurors could see them held in contempt of court. The BBC's legal expert Clive Coleman, said: "This is the strongest and most detailed judicial consideration of the threat to the criminal justice system posed by jurors using modern technology. "It raises major questions of how to police and stop internet use."

Amidst the rumors that the Nexus Two is arriving soon, Phone Arena caught hold of Samsung Continuum SGH-i400 smartphone that runs Android and has twin display. As eWeek reported, Samsung won't be launching purported Nexus Two later today since it's been rumored to be facing serious hardware issues. TechCrunch also confirms that no Nexus Two would be launched at the Samsung Event held today because the phone has faced some serious hardware problems. Samsung is expected to introduce new SGH-i400 Continuum smartphone with two Super AMOLED display. The Continuum will have a 3.4-inch main display that offers 480x800 pixel WVGA resolution. There's also a strip like Ticker Display right at the bottom of the main display. The 1.8-inch Ticker Display offers 96x480 pixel resolution. Now if we take a look good look at the invite that showed Stock Market figures, the Ticker Display in Continuum makes much more sense now. Grip Sensor on the either side of the phone is to be used to wake up the phone from standby mode. Continuum is Galaxy S based phone and hence will have the same 1GHz Humming bird processor and will run Android 2.1 with TouchWiz 3.0 interface. Imaging enthusiasts can make the best of its 5 megapixel camera with LED Flash that offers 720p HD recording. This phone will have DivX video playback support out of the box. As per the Verizon Wireless User Manual of Continuum, this phone will support EVDO Rev A network and also support WiFi 802.11 b/g/n as well as Bluetooth for wireless connectivity. If Samsung had to release it via Verizon, there could've been a mention of the mobile operator somewhere. Nonetheless, we shall wait for Samsung to officially launch the Android device it is going to announce today.
