Remember the other Galaxy S phone that was released on Verizon? No not the Fascinate, the other one. The special variant that was released with an extra tiny display under the main screen? In case you haven’t gotten the answer yet – it’s the Continuum we’re talking about. While just when we thought Samsung/Verizon has forgotten about it, a very special update for the phone has managed to leak onto the internet.

Samsung Continuum officially launched

Samsung has officially lifted the lid on its new Continuum Android handset at a snazzy media event in New York City this evening. The new handset will run on Android 2.1 and feature not one, but two touchscreens; a 3.4-inch Super AMOLED top screen for general use and a second 1.8-inch 'ticker' beneath for registering notifications. The ticker, which is a world first, shows your RSS feeds, missed calls, texts and IMs. There's also clocks, weather, media controls as well as incoming texts and call alerts. Grip sensor Working on the theory that it's rude to check your phone every five seconds, you can view the ticker activity thanks to a grip sensor at the side of the phone that lights up that screen alone. The device has a 1GHz Hummingbird processor to ensure it ticks along at a fair pace and, in terms of multimedia, has a 5-megapixel camera with a flash and 720p video capture. It's got 8GB of storage that's upgradable to 32GB. Party pooped Despite such a high profile launch, one has to feel a little for Samsung. Firstly, its party was thoroughly pooped by the Continuum's user manual showing up on US carrier Verizon's website this morning, complete with 360-degree photography. The company has also had to contend with the with the general disappointment that it wasn't announcing the rumoured Google Nexus Two handset. The Continuum will be part of the Galaxy stable, but there's no news yet on whether we'll see it in the UK or whether this is another Verizon US-exclusive.

Samsung Might Show Continuum with Ticker Display

At a conference today, Samsung is expected to unveil its next Android device. Amidst the rumors that the Nexus Two is arriving soon, Phone Arena caught hold of Samsung Continuum SGH-i400 smartphone that runs Android and has twin display. As eWeek reported, Samsung won't be launching purported Nexus Two later today since it's been rumored to be facing serious hardware issues. TechCrunch also confirms that no Nexus Two would be launched at the Samsung Event held today because the phone has faced some serious hardware problems. Samsung is expected to introduce new SGH-i400 Continuum smartphone with two Super AMOLED display. The Continuum will have a 3.4-inch main display that offers 480x800 pixel WVGA resolution. There's also a strip like Ticker Display right at the bottom of the main display. The 1.8-inch Ticker Display offers 96x480 pixel resolution. Now if we take a look good look at the invite that showed Stock Market figures, the Ticker Display in Continuum makes much more sense now. Grip Sensor on the either side of the phone is to be used to wake up the phone from standby mode. Continuum is Galaxy S based phone and hence will have the same 1GHz Humming bird processor and will run Android 2.1 with TouchWiz 3.0 interface. Imaging enthusiasts can make the best of its 5 megapixel camera with LED Flash that offers 720p HD recording. This phone will have DivX video playback support out of the box. As per the Verizon Wireless User Manual of Continuum, this phone will support EVDO Rev A network and also support WiFi 802.11 b/g/n as well as Bluetooth for wireless connectivity. If Samsung had to release it via Verizon, there could've been a mention of the mobile operator somewhere. Nonetheless, we shall wait for Samsung to officially launch the Android device it is going to announce today.
