Connect the power cable to the back of the Deskjet 5100, then connect the other end to a wall outlet. Turn the Deskjet 5100 on.

Lift the top tray of the Deskjet 5100, then place at least one sheet of blank paper in the bottom tray. Lower the top tray.

Lift the center cover of the Deskjet 5100 and wait for the ink cartridge carrier to move to the center of the printer. Open the covers for the two sides of the carrier.

Unwrap an ink cartridge and remove the clear strip covering the metal contacts. Orient the cartridge so that the contacts face away from you, and push it into the ink cartridge carrier with a matching icon indicating black or color until it snaps into place. Lower the cover and install the second ink cartridge in the same manner. Close the cover of the Deskjet 5100.

Insert the software disc for the Deskjet 5100 and follow the instructions on the screen until the computer prompts you to connect the printer to the computer.

Connect one end of the USB cable to the back of the Deskjet 5100, and connect the other end to an open USB port on the back of the computer. Follow the instructions on the screen to finish installing the software for the Deskjet 5100. When the software installation is complete, the printer is ready to use.
