Connect an Ethernet cable to the back of each computer and connect the second end of each cable to the numbered ports on the back of a network switch or router.

Click the "Start" icon on one of the computers, then click "Control Panel."

Click the drop-down menu next to "View by" in the upper-right corner of the screen and select "Small icons."

Click the "Network and Sharing Center" icon.

Examine the network type shown under "View your active networks." If the network type is "Home Network," skip to Step 7.

Click the blue "Public Network" or "Work Network" link to change the network type. Select "Home Network" in the window that appears, then click the "Close" button.

Click "Choose homegroup and sharing options."

Check the box next to each type of file, such as "Pictures" or "Music," that you would like Windows to share automatically.

Click the "Save Changes" button and close the window.

Open the "Start" menu again. Right-click the "Computer" icon and select "Properties."

Click the "Change Settings" link on the right side of the window.

Click the "Change" button at the bottom of the window. Type a name under "Workgroup" that you would like to use to identify your home network, then click "OK" in each open window.

Repeat steps 2-12 on the second computer.

Return to the "Network and Sharing Center" window on either computer. Click "See Full Map" at the top of the window, then double-click the icon representing the other computer to see the files shared on that computer.
