Speedy or not, though, there may be some dangers lurking in store for the unwary. If you are a DSL subscriber, you may find that having a DSL connection makes your system more vulnerable to attack than having a dial-up connection. The risks are the same as with a dial-up connection, except that the nature of DSL can amplify the risks a bit.Constant AccessWhen your connection to the Internet is on 24/7, hackers don't have to hunt for a system back door to attack that appears on and off. One such attack on DSL users occurred through the so-called 911 virus, where the virus deleted files on the systems it attacked. If you are using a dial-up connection, on the other hand, an attacker who finds a way to access your system will only be able to use it when you dial in to the Internet.IP AddressWhen you connect to the Internet via a DSL connection, there is a range of IP addresses that your system uses. This range of IP addresses doesn't protect your system from attack, though. These addresses become known to computer hackers and also make your system vulnerable to attack. If the attack is successful, the hacker can install software on your system. If you are using a dial-up connection though, your IP address will likely change each time you dial in. However, a determined hacker will be able to routinely scan and identify your system. Even then, this does provide some amount of improved protection, however slight, over the DSL connection. (see reference 1)DefensesInstalling a firewall is a good way to protect your always-on DSL-connected system from attack. These firewalls can detect a hacker's attempts to connect to your system and can block them. In addition, you could also set up virus detection software on your computer to provide added security.
