Google has announced a software update for its UK-bound Google TV service, which incorporates the Android Market and Honeycomb OS for the first time.<br />
Google TV 2.0 opens up the service to third party developers via the Android Market, which means all existing applications can be rewritten for the TV screen and new ones can be created.<br />
With Google TV set to launch in the UK early next year, this opens the possibility for the likes of Spotify, BBC iPlayer, LOVEFiLM and Sky Go to have native applications for the service.<br />
<h4 style="font-size: 1em;">
Numbers will grow</h4>
In a post on the official Google TV blog, the company says: "We are opening up the TV to the creativity of content creators large and small through Android Market.<br />
"Android developers can now bring existing mobile apps or entirely new ones to TV.<br />
"Initially, the number of apps won't be large – apps requiring a touch screen, GPS, or telephony won't show up – but 50 developers have seeded the Market with cool and useful apps for the TV. We're excited to see the number of apps grow."<br />
The new Google TV, which runs a variant of the Android Honeycomb OS seen on tablets like the Motorola Xoom, also has an overhauled, simplified interface which makes finding content easier.<br />
Another big improvement looks to be the YouTube app. Google says it has completely overhauled the way the video sharing portal works on Google TV, with the company also integrating YouTube into the system's content search.<br />

Google TV: All bets are off</h4>
When Eric Schmidt announced Google TV would be coming to the UK, many felt that the horse had already bolted, following a disappointing reception in the US due to the lack of content available.<br />
With news that all content providers, as well as game developers can now push their wares using the service, it makes the Google TV proposition an entirely different and much more interesting one.<br />
We're actually quite excited now.<br />

Apparently the folks from Amazon UK are ready to start the party because they’ve already posted up pre-orders for the Galaxy Nexus. We saw some order pages go up earlier this week but I get a better feeling ordering from Amazon than some smaller sites, not to mention they have a release date of November 2nd.</div>

Yup, in case you missed that, Amazon UK is listing the Samsung Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich as due to be released on November 2nd. One small problem is the price though, Amazon is asking £730.15 for the new superphone. I might not be great at math but if my currency conversion skills are accurate that is well over $1100 USD. Wow, at that price put me down for three. At least shipping is free right?</div>

According to our tipsters (thanks guys) the Amazon UK page went live last night and the device was being offered for just £540 and was listed as in stock November 7th. That actually still hasn’t changed and third party retailers on Amazon are listing the phone at the much lower £540 price tag. You may have to wait a few more days but will save a bundle.</div>

Those customers in question will be moved onto AT&T’s Data Pro plus Tehthering, giving them 4 GB of data to use for $45 a month.</div>

Earlier this year AT&T sent out warnings to those illegally tethering, although the warnings did seem much more aimed at iPhone users. They threatened to move those users onto tethering plans, if they did not either stop tethering, or sign up for a plan themselves. Now AT&T has confirmed they will start making good on that threat this month.</div>

The other big news here is that if you are on an unlimited data plan with AT&T still, you will lose it forever if they switch you. Capping your data is a hefty price to pay, so if you’ve been contacted by AT&T, better safe than sorry, stop tethering. Of course if the tethering is more important to you than the unlimited data, then its up to you to see how long you can risk it.</div>

I for one have never been too happy with the fact wireless providers make you pay extra for tethering, but I do have to say that there is a case to be made for unlimited data, especially as we see wireless speeds approach those of our home networks.</div>

On a tiered plan, I stick to my guns that its your data to use on whatever device you have, but the contracts over rule me. I’ll end my rant there. Be warned, some Android users may not have received warnings since the campaign seems more iPhone oriented, but if you tether, do it with caution.</div>

Hardware that already had Lion on it, can be sold and the license transfers with it. You can restore the machine to its virginal state and sell it off. The new user should be able to use the recovery partition to re-install the OS whenever needed. Your e-mail should not be involved.</div>

Since the hardware is newer, should the hard drive fail, the user should be able to use the over-the-air restore process.</div>

That process does not seem to involve any user authentication. The hardware likely checks in with some kind of central Apple database that associates the machine ID with shipped-with-Lion install, but Apple is being closed lipped as usual in disclosing how the eligibility is determined. Auntie guesses it's the hardware identity.</div>

So as far as Apple is concerned, you still "ship with DVDs" but you also need to downgrade to the original OS. That means completely wiping the drive to remove the recovery partition as well as experiencing all the joys of an OS re-install from DVD.</div>

Auntie suggests another way. Starting in August, you will be able to purchase an install dongle at the Apple Store. That additional $69 may simplify the whole process and the questions behind it ownership transfer.</div>

When you ship a dongle along with a newly dongle-installed machine, you ensure that the new user can start fresh and will have a full license of their own. Of course, that extra $69 takes a bite out of your profit margin. But you'll be selling Lion-installed hardware rather than whatever your system started out with. (Do make sure to send the original install DVDs as well.)</div>

Pool Party will be a photo sharing application which places an emphasis on creating group albums they call “pools”, showing off new photos in real time. The app, just like Google+, is currently in invite-only beta testing. Heck, Google even managed to purchase the poolpartyapp.com domain, so that means they are dead serious on seeing Pool Party take over the world – if possible.</p><br/>Someone did take note that Pool Party has already appeared on the Android Market, but no idea on whether it will work since it is in private beta at the moment.
