Windows 8 to include Time Machine-alike History Vault

<img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//classifications/computing/software/operating-systems/windows8/historyvault-200-200.jpg"> Microsoft is apparently integrating a feature called History Vault, which sounds remarkably similar to the well known Mac 'Time Machine' in OSX. According to Winrumors, The History Vault functionality allows users to backup files and data automatically using the Shadow Copies function and could also allow users to restore to a particular moment in time. That, of course, apes Time Machine, and the feature is likely to start the normal bickering about how much of Windows' UI was in fact brought to market in Mac OS. Not to worry Not that this will really matter to PC users who opt for Windows 8, of course, who will merely be glad of the extra functionality, and not worry too much who invented it. Although a Windows 8 build has apparently been shipped out to key partners, Microsoft is not ready to talk about Windows 8 just yet, despite TechRadar's badgering. We can only hope that the OS can continue the sterling efforts that we saw in Windows 7 – an operating system that appears to have changed consumer opinions of Microsoft.

Facebook upgrades Android app to include Places

<img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com///classifications/Mobile%20Phones/Android/facebookandroid-728-75-200-200.jpg"> The Facebook app for Android is finally getting a facelift to include the Places functionality seen on its iPhone counterpart, while also adding Groups. Android owners will now be able to check-in at their current location on Facebook using their handset's GPS signal using Places. This will allow those using Android to capitalise on the new Places Deals service announced at Facebook's mobile event this evening. Back on track The refreshed app is a welcome boost for Android users who've long bemoaned how poor the Facebook portal is compared to the iPhone iteration. "Traditionally the Android app has always been a little bit behind," said Mark Zuckerberg. "We didn't have a full team working on it, but now we're back on track." The iPhone app itself also got a lick of paint, with users now able to geo-tag photos using Places, while both platforms will be able to access their Facebook Groups from within the app. The new apps will be available to download from their respective stores shortly.
