How to Fix an Amptron Laptop With Windows 2000 With IDE & CD-ROM Not Found

<P>Locate the manufacturer's name and model number for both your computer's motherboard and your CD-ROM drive. You can find your motherboard information in your computer's original instruction manual, or by opening up your computer's case (while the unit is powered down) and looking at the identification label on the device itself. You can find your CD-ROM drive manufacturer and model number by clicking "Start," "Computer," right-clicking your CD-ROM drive icon, clicking "Properties" and clicking the "Hardware" tab. You will need this information to locate the proper drivers for both devices. The information about your motherboard will help locate the driver for your IDE controller (as this device is permanently attached to your motherboard).</P><P>Open your Web browser and go to the manufacturer's website for your motherboard. For example, if the company Phoenix made your motherboard, you would need to go to its website. Use the "Search" function of the website to search for your motherboard by model number. When you locate the motherboard product website, look for the download link for your IDE controller driver and click "Download" to download it to your computer.</P><P>Navigate to the manufacturer's website for your CD-ROM drive. For example, if HP made your CD-ROM drive, you need to go to HP's website. Use the "Search" function of the website to search for your CD-ROM drive by model number. When you locate the device's product website, look for the download link for your CD-ROM driver and click "Download" to download it to your computer.</P><P>Double-click your IDE driver file. Click "Extract" to install the driver onto your computer. Install the CD-ROM driver by double-clicking its icon and selecting the "Extract" button as well.</P><P>Reboot your Windows 2000 computer. Your computer will recognize both devices now that drivers are installed.</P>

How to Disassemble a CD-ROM Motor

<P>Remove all cables from the CD-ROM drive. Place a bath towel on a table. Place the CD-ROM drive on the bath towel with the back facing you.</P><P>Remove the screws from the back with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Place the CD-ROM face down on the bath towel. Remove the screws from the bottom edges with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Turn the CD-ROM drive right side up with the front facing you.</P><P>Insert the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver into the seam between the outer case and the face plate on the upper left side. Lift up on the tip to loosen the clip holding the faceplate to the outer case. Repeat this procedure at the middle and the upper right side of the faceplate.</P><P>Grip the sides of the drive's outer case. Pull the outer case away from you to separate it from the front panel. Pull the outer case off the CD-ROM drive.</P><P>Insert the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver beneath a clip on the circuit board. Lift up on the tip to release the clip. Repeat this procedure with all of the clips on the circuit board. Insert the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver beneath a plug on the circuit board. Lift up on the tip to release the plug. Pull the plug out. Repeat this procedure with any other plugs on the circuit board.</P><P>Remove the screws from the corners of the circuit board with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver Pull the circuit board out of the CD-ROM drive.</P><P>Insert the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver beneath an edge of the spindle cover that is on top of the motor that is inside the CD-ROM drive. Lift up on the tip to loosen the spindle cover. Pull the spindle cover off. Pull the disc tray forward so that it is fully extended.</P><P>Remove the screw in the tab covering the laser assembly with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Pull the tab off. Grip the laser assembly on one side and lift up. Wiggle the edge of the laser assembly off the railing it is riding on. Repeat this with the other edge of the laser assembly. Pull the laser assembly out of the CD-ROM drive and place it aside.</P><P>Rotate the CD-ROM drive so that the extended disc tray is facing to the right. Insert the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver into the clip just to the right of the second cog from the left in the space now vacated by the laser assembly. Lift up on the tip to loose the clip. Remove the cog with the tweezers.</P><P>Remove the screw covering the rubber washer to the right of where the cogs were with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Remove the rubber washer with the tweezers. Remove the screws surrounding the laser head assembly with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver--the laser module was taken out of the assembly earlier. Pull the laser head assembly out of the CD-ROM drive.</P><P>Insert the tip of the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver into the seam at the bottom edge of the motor that is beneath the assembly. Lift up on the tip to pull the motor's casing off. Remove the screws surrounding the motor that is beneath the assembly with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.</P><P>Insert the tip of the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver into the clips on the side of the motor holding the wiring in place. Lift up on the tip to release the clips. Pull the disassembled motor out of the CD-ROM drive.</P>
