A lot of people are getting into the download hype. With the increasing resources available on the web, it is no wonder that people are downloading more and more files, songs, videos and other applications online-with no respect for their security or whatsoever.
You should always be mindful of the things that you download as well as your computer's security. Here are some considerations:
On attachments, pop-ups and links
1. If you receive an email with an attached file or an IM message from a total stranger, never ever open the attachment. Of course, the situation differs when if you know the one who sent the file. Then again, you still have to double check with the sender before you open the file unless, again, you asked for the file. A lot of email attachments contain viruses and malwares that infect your computer and make you and your data vulnerable to hacking and identity theft.
2. When you see banner ads or pop-up messages when you browse, do not click on them as well. They may be offering free software or applications or their smileys may be too cute to resist but that should never tempt you from actually downloading the program.
3. Be especially careful of pop-ups that will ask you to click on "OK," "I ACCEPT" or "AGREE" buttons. May they be warnings, offers to remove viruses or Trojans into your computer or simply chat messages asking for your personal information, but the only thing that you should click on it is the close icon on the upper right hand corner or ALT+F4 on your keyboard. As previously mentioned, these can contain viruses and malwares.
4. If you've finally decided that you were able to verify the source of the file and you will be downloading it, save it on your hard disk or flash drive instead of simply opening these files. This would ensure that your antivirus program will check the file before it is downloaded, which assures you that you are only opening files that are clean.
On downloads, downloading and pure download
1. You have to practice extreme caution when you are downloading any file online. You have to download only from reputable sites and known sources. There are instances when you will receive email messages that will contain direct you to certain sites using varied links. Do not click on them. They may seem too good to be true but if they don't have any clear privacy statements, stay away from them.
2. Do not forget that the downloading music, software, programs, games and video files are against the law especially if they have been procured illegally. Do not expose yourself into legal trouble by downloading copyrighted materials and work.
3. Sharing files over a network can seriously expose you to identity theft. Do not be a victim of any of these tactics. Avoid using P2P technology and other file sharing programs because your information can be widely exposed, thus enabling identity theft criminals from gaining access to them.
