OpenFeint sees giant spike in Christmas users and downloads

OpenFeint has announced that it saw a 184% spike in new users on Christmas Day last week, the largest single day in the service's history for new users. Over the four days around the holiday, OpenFeint reportedly added more than <i>1.4 million</i> new users to the service.<br /> <br /> Downloads were also really high, with five million OpenFeint-enabled games downloaded over the holiday weekend. That includes Android games, which saw 73% growth, and iOS games, which spiked by 187% over the weekend. That's a lot of new games and new players.<br /> <br /> We've heard other evidence already that last weekend was really busy for the App Store. <P>It's been a long time coming for many of us – 28 years to be precise – but <EM>Tron: Legacy</EM> finally hits cinemas in the UK this week.</P><br /><P>The movie has been shot in 3D from the ground up, so it is a very good showcase of what the technology is capable of.</P><br /><P>Couple this with the fact that you get two Jeff Bridges for the price of one (a bearded and younger version) and what you have is a recipe for three-dimensional success</P><br /><P><EM>Tron: Legacy</EM> may be our number one 3D thing to go and watch this week, but there's also four frankly awesome more things 3D-wise that you can see and do.</P><br /><P>Don't believe us? Weekend Gaming: “Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood,” “Call of Duty: Black Ops” and “Rage: Mutant Bash TV” [OPEN THEAD]

<P><img alt="" class="alignright size-full wp-image-437233" height="225" src="/weekend-gaming-225.jpg" title="Weekend Gaming" width="225"></P><br /><P>Weekend Gaming is back with an all new logo thanks to Mashable’s</EM> <a href="http://mashable.com/author/matt-silverman/">Matt Silverman</A>. We’ve had a busy couple of weeks in gaming, with two new installments to major franchises hitting the shelves.</P><br /><P>Because stealth games are ones of my guiltiest pleasures, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood</EM> has been consuming the most of my time. That obsession probably started with Tenchu</EM> way back in 1998 on the <a href="http://mashable.com/tag/playstation/">PlayStation</A>.</P><br /><P>Although the Metal Gear</EM> series popularized stealth action, I never really got into those games, and few stealth games have been able to hold my attention. The only real exceptions have been the Assassin’s Creed</EM> series and Splinter Cell: Conviction</EM>.</P><br /><P>The biggest problem with Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood</EM> is that it feels more like an expansion pack to Assassin’s Creed II</EM> than its own standalone game. Regardless, some much needed upgrades to the game’s dynamics have made Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood</EM> a worthwhile adventure.</P><br /><P>Admittedly, I’ve logged only about two hours of gameplay on <a href="http://mashable.com/tag/call-of-duty-black-ops/">Call of Duty: Black Ops</A></EM>, but so far I like what I’ve seen. While it exists as a logical successor to Call of Duty: World at War</EM>, developer <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treyarch" target="blank">Treyarch</A> has definitely taken some cues from <a href="http://mashable.com/tag/modern-warfare-2/">Modern Warfare 2</A></EM>.</P><br /><P>Having not yet invested enough time into Black Ops</EM>, I’m really curious to hear your thoughts on the title. And let’s try not to get into a debate over <a href="http://mashable.com/tag/activision/">Activision’s</A> handling of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infinity_Ward" target="blank">Infinity Ward</A> during the creation of MW2</EM>. Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops</EM> deserves to be judged on its own merits.</P><br /><P>This week also saw the release of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Id_Software" target="blank">id Software’s</A> RAGE: Mutant Bash TV</EM> for <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/rage/id396956740" target="blank">iPhone and iPod touch</A> or <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/rage-hd/id400707675" target="blank">iPad</A>. It is a fast-paced first person shooter (FPS) that, more than anything, shows the promise of gaming on mobile platforms.</P><br /><P>Although it is currently available only <a href="http://www.mashable.com/category/ios">iOS</A>, I chatted with iconic game developer <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Carmack" target="blank">John Carmack</A>, and he revealed that id is currently seeking full-time Android developers. That means <a href="http://www.mashable.com/category/android">Android</A><a class="blippr-inline-smiley blippr-inline-smiley-07" href="http://www.blippr.com/apps/336868-Android" rel="http://www.blippr.com/apps/336868-Android.whtml" target="_blank">Android<img alt="Android" class="wp-smiley" height="14" src="/inline-face07.png" width="14"></A> fans might be able to get in on the action with future mobile releases from id Software.</P><br /><P>Mutant Bash TV</EM> is a small teaser for id’s next legacy title RAGE</EM>, which is due out on major gaming consoles later next year. It will be id’s first major release since <a href="http://mashable.com/tag/doom">Doom 3</A></EM> back in 2004.</P><br /><P>Finally, what would Weekend Gaming be without a little giveaway? Crazy Taxi</EM> was just released to <a href="http://mashable.com/tag/xbox-live">Xbox Live Arcade</A> and the <a href="http://mashable.com/tag/playstation-network/">PlayStation Network</A>, and we have five codes for each platform. iPhone Flash app makes $1 million in a weekend

<img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//classifications/images/skyfire-200-200.jpg"><br /><P>SkyFire, the app that lets iPhone users view Flash video on their phones, has managed to generate a cool $1 million in its first weekend on sale.</P><br /><P>The SkyFire app for iPhone costs $2.99 in the US and yet is still not officially available on the UK iTunes Store.</P><br /><P><STRONG>How to make a quick million bucks</STRONG></P><br /><P>However, reports from the jailbreak scene indicate that there are plenty of British users with jailbroken iPhones already happily using the Flash app.</P><br /><P>SkyFire is available for free on all other smartphone platforms, but that is clearly because those platforms already offer Flash video support, unlike Apple's iPhone.</P><br /><P>The company told MobileCrunch that its download numbers for their first weekend on the US iTunes store were 2well over 300,000." </P><br /><P>After Apple takes its 30 per cent cut, this means that SkyFire walked about with somewhere between $600,000 to $700,000.</P><br /><P>Not bad for a weekend's work!</P><br /><P>The iPhone app has suffered a few teething troubles in its first few weeks on sale, with SkyFire putting this down to the huge demand for Flash on iPhone from its customers.</P>
