The information only states how many phones were purchased by the retail chain rather than are in the pockets of consumers, but gives a rough idea of the numbers we're talking about. Windows Phone 7 represents Microsoft's major push into consumer mobiles – with the company desperate to get back on track with a completely redesigned mobile OS. Word on actual sales had been thin on the ground until Achim Berg, Microsoft's vice president of business and marketing for Windows Phones, gave out the information. "We are pleased that phone manufacturers sold over 1.5 million phones in the first six weeks, which helps build customer momentum and retail presence," said Berg. Sales ramping well "Sales are ramping well as our reputation is growing for offering users a unique experience and are in line with our expectations – especially when compared to other new platform introductions, he commented. "With a new platform you have to look at a couple of things, first of all customer satisfaction. As I mentioned before, we've seen great response on the complete mobile phone experience. "Another is phone manufacturer sales – phones being bought and stocked by mobile operators and retailers on their way to customers." Berg is aware that Microsoft has a tough task in competing with the likes of Google and Apple but insists that the company is 'in the race'. "We know we have tough competition, and this is a completely new product. We're in the race – it's not a sprint but we are certainly gaining momentum and we're in it for the long run."

In a move that would radically shift the strategy of the once all-powerful Finnish firm, apparently in the last month Nokia has initiated talks with Microsoft about creating a new line of phones based on the platform - although whether they are branded or not is unclear. This news is far from confirmed - it comes from the column of well-respected and eerily accurate Russian journalist Eldar Murtazin, a long-standing thorn in Nokia's side. He states that executives from Nokia's new management team (who are now led by ex-Microsoft executive Stephen Elop) approached Microsoft about the possibility of supporting the new OS. Final stand It seems hard to believe that Nokia would finally allow another firm's OS onto its devices after touting the power of Symbian^3 and the forthcoming MeeGo for so long - but the Microsoft tie-in does seem to make sense for both sides. Nokia would be loathe to jump into the OHA and start developing Android phones, as it would be essentially confirming that the Google OS is superior to its own open-source Symbian. <img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//classifications/Mobile%20Phones/Sharp3d-handsets-200-200.jpg"/>Sharp has announced a brace of handsets for the Japanese market which boast 3D capabilities.The snappily titled Galapagos 003SH and 005SH come equipped with a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, Android 2.2 as an OS, and a 3.8-inch 3D-capable display which has 800 x 480 pixel resolution.One of the phones has been given a QWERTY keyboard (the 005SH), while the 003SH has camera bragging rights – it has a whopping 9.6MP camera attached.It will be interesting to see if 3D on a small device will work.
