Boasting sound that is "as deep and lifelike as any 3D image," the system includes something called the Vertical 3D Effect Channel, which blasts out sound from the top of the included Tallboy Speakers. </P><br /><P>This brings 7.1 sound but without the messy job of putting up brackets in your home to hold the top speakers.</P><br /><P><STRONG>Connected player</STRONG></P><br /><P>LG will also show off the HB906SB Blu-ray player at CES 2011. This is another home cinema system that has 1,100 watts of output and uses LG's new Digital Signal Processing to iron out the sound waves.</P><br /><P>The HX996TS and HB906SB both utilise Wi-Fi, have an iPod dock cradle and USB support.</P><br /><P>LG will also be launching the BD690, a network Blu-ray 3D player that boasts Smart TV Technology, access to the LG App Store and Wi-Fi Direct compatibility - which is a first in the market. </P><br /><P>The LG BD690 is an update to LG's current <a href="">BD390 range</A>.</P><br /><P>UK release date and pricing details are to be announced but expect more information when CES 2011 begins 5 January.</P>

Curzon unveils the first on-demand 'cinema'

<img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//classifications/computing/internet-and-broadband/images/curzon-ondemand-200-200.jpg"><br /><P>Independent cinema specialist Curzon has revealed that it is bringing its movie ethos to the web, with the launch of Curzon On Demand.</P><br /><P>Curzon has announced that it will be running its on-demand channel the same way it runs its cinemas, carefully selecting the right movies for the channel and even putting indie films it shows in its cinemas on the service as well.</P><br /><P>In a release, it said about the on-demand launch: "Curzon On Demand uses the latest technology to deliver a cinema experience in the home or on the move. </P><br /><P>"The site provides greater access to theatrically released films, giving audiences unable to visit cinemas the opportunity to see such films."</P><br /><P><STRONG>Watershed moment</STRONG></P><br /><P>The big bonus is – if you have a web service that can handle it – all of the movies will be shown in HD.</P><br /><P>Skip Fidura, Managing Director of dotAgency who created the website for Curzon said: "The Curzon On Demand site represents a watershed moment in the way we consume online media. Virgin Media officially unveils new TiVo powered box

<img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//classifications/home-entertainment/tv/images/TivoBox-200-200.jpg"> <br /><P>Virgin Media has formally unveiled its latest set top box, with a TiVo powered UI, a built-in modem and three tuners all bringing the cable giant's television service bang up to date for the modern market. </P><br /><P>The company believes that a partnership with US PVR specialist TiVo has brought a 'game-changing' user interface as it looks to modernise its offering and compete with Sky, BT Vision and the forthcoming slew of IPTV services. </P><br /><P>"The new service will lead a much-anticipated revolution in the way people find and enjoy their favourite content," said Virgin Media.</P><br /><P><STRONG>Graphical interface</STRONG></P><br /><P>"An easy-to-use graphical interface will combine the live TV schedule with catch-up TV, a huge library of on-demand programming and popular web-based applications alongside a market-leading personal video recorder," it added.</P><br /><P>"As a result, Virgin Media customers will never miss out on great programmes and will find it easier than ever to discover new types of entertainment to match their tastes and preferences."</P><br /><P>The new platform will offer instant (and potentially HD or 3D) content on demand – still a huge selling point over its rivals, and the new box offers 1TB of storage and three tuners, allowing two things to be recorded while a third is watched live. </P><br /><P>However, the box will initially only launch with two tuners, with the third being added to new boxes early in 2011.</P><br /><P><img alt="Virgin media powered by tivo" src="http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/classifications/home-entertainment/tv/VirginUI_non4x3/HomeScreen-420-90.jpg" title="Virgin media powered by tivo" width="420"></IMG></P><br /><P>"This also means that – unlike other internet enabled TV services – customers will be able to watch what they want at the click of a button, rather than waiting for time-consuming downloads," adds Virgin Media.</P><br /><P>"As Virgin Media TV powered by TiVo utilises dedicated channels of bandwidth, the user's viewing choice will not come at the expense of their broadband connection, so households can watch and surf simultaneously without interruption."</P><br /><P><STRONG>Recommended</STRONG></P><br /><P>The TiVo recommendation engine will be a major new addition – but it will be the way in which content is grouped and surfaced which will be the major pluses in a revamped UI. </P><br /><P>Cindy Rose, executive director of digital entertainment at Virgin Media, said, "This is a landmark moment in the UK's digital revolution and vividly illustrates why Virgin Media is the only company who can provide the ultimate digital lifestyle. </P><br /><P>"For the first time, viewers will have a truly personalised viewing experience so they can get the most out of the wonderful worlds of the internet and TV all in one place. </P><br /><P>"We're really excited to bring our customers what is just the first of successive generations of transformational services based on this unique TiVo-powered platform." </P><br /><P><STRONG>Get connected</STRONG></P><br /><P>Connected television is a massive part of home entertainment's future, and Virgin is hoping that the inclusion of a separate modem in the box will help push its offering ahead of its rivals. </P><br /><P>"Through its dedicated 10Mb cable broadband modem, which is built into the personal video recorder, the new platform will also bring the ever-growing popularity of the app store to the living room for the first time, doing for TV what the iPhone and Android have done for the mobile phone," the company stated. </P><br /><P>"Built on an Adobe Flash-based platform, the latest videos, social networking and information apps will be updated regularly. </P><br /><P>"The service launches initially with apps from major web brands including catch-up TV from BBC iPlayer, videos from YouTube, shopping from the online marketplace eBay, Tweets from Twitter and photos from sites such as Facebook, and the app line up will expand over the next several months."</P>

Acer unveils enormous new smartphone

<img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//classifications/Mobile%20Phones/Acer/Acer%20Smartphone_4.8inches_02-200-200.jpg"><br /><P>Acer has announced a new smartphone with some high-end tech specs - but decided against giving it a name.</P><br /><P>The new 'next generation smartphone' has a massive 4.8-inch screen, taking it into <a href="http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/dell-streak-694319/review">Dell Streak</A> territory, where it also runs Android, but with no mention of which version of Google's OS it will come with.</P><br /><P>It comes with a 1024 x 480 resolution display as well, making it technically the highest-res smartphone out there, although whether this is a big phone or a small tablet has yet to be decided - and the pixels per inch still won't match the iPhone 4.</P><br /><P>Curiously it's got a 21:9 ratio display, something we've not seen since the iconic <a href="http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/lg-bl40-chocolate-631451/review">LG Chocolate BL40</A> last year.</P><br /><P>With dimensions of 141.7 x 64 x 13.3mm and a 170g weight, it might be a little hefty in the pocket, although the width will attract some of the more style-conscious out there.</P><br /><P><STRONG>Snapping and all that</STRONG></P><br /><P>There's an 8MP camera bolted on the back with single LED flash, and a 2MP front camera for video calling. DLNA technology lets you stream media from your PC, and an HDMI connectivity cable.</P><br /><P>A 6-axis gyroscope, like that seen on the <a href="http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/apple-iphone-4-694980/review">iPhone 4</A>, will make gaming a lot more fun - although the lack of Android games that support this function are at a premium at the moment, so Acer's claim of 'a perfect games console' is a little optimistic.</P><br /><P>So is the claim that 'the LED backlit display uses the same technology as TV showing super bright and vivid images' - which feels a little like saying the metal chassis is made the same way as your car.</P><br /><P>We've decided to call this smartphone the Acer River - we've had the <a href="http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/acer-liquid-e-704309/review">Liquid </A>and the <a href="http://www.techradar.com/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/acer-stream-707419/review">Stream</A>, so it's easy to see the water-themed corollary Acer's going for here. </P><br /><P>Don't forget - TechRadar named it first.</P>

Nokia unveils new budget C2 and X2

<img src="http://cdn.mos.techradar.com//classifications/Mobile%20Phones/Nokia/Nokia-C3-01-200-200.jpg"><br /><P>Nokia has announced a couple of new additions to its budget range: the C2-01 and the X2-01, both running Symbian S40.</P><br /><P>Unless you're desperate for a full QWERTY keyboard, the C2 is clearly the better of the two, with 3G connectivity, an FM radio, Bluetooth and 12 button standard keyboard below a two inch screen.</P><br /><P>It also comes with a 3.2MP camera on the back, as well as up to 16GB of onboard storage - all for around €70 (£60).</P><br /><P><STRONG>X appeal</STRONG></P><br /><P>The X2 eschews the 3G and FM radio, and instead goes on the social networking tip, with Nokia's 'Communities' on board, as well as a landscape-centric 2.4-inch display. </P><br /><P>However, despite only offering up GPRS/EDGE connectivity, the price is still higher than the C2 at roughly £65.</P><br /><P>And finally, the Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type is finally shipping to the UK, which is essentially a lot like the C2, but with a much higher spec list: HSDPA connectivity, a 5MP camera with single LED flash and up to 32GB of memory.</P><br /><P>It's also packing S60 for an operating system, so it can access the shiny and exciting work of the Nokia Ovi Store too.</P><br /><P>However, it's not going to be cheap: a premium full metal chassis has hiked the cost of £160 SIM free.</P><br /><P>The Nokia X2 is set to debut later this year, with the C2 set for a Q1 2011 UK release date.</P>

Though the pricing and availability weren't announced, this entry-level All-in-one does certainly deserve a look at its specifications. <BR>The 18.5-inch wide-screen LCD display offering 1366x768 pixel resolution and integrated Intel GMA X4500 graphics make it decent enough for watching 720p HD content. Inside the chassis, the Wind Top AC 1900 houses 2.6GHz dual-core Intel Celeron E3400 microprocessor. Packing 2GB DDR3 RAM, one can upgrade it up to 4GB DDR3 memory. <BR>For storage, MSI offers 3.5-inch 320GB SATA II hard drive. The 18.5-inch screen has a built-in DVD Super Multi drive and 1.3-megapixel webcam with mic. Other features of this low-end Net top include two 3W speakers, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, 6-in-1 multimedia card reader. However, the funny part is that there are no USB, VGA, eSATA or HDMI ports added to this nettop. <BR>The Wind Top AC 1900 runs Windows 7 Home Premium operating system. The drive is powered by an external power adapter and consumes a maximum of 7.5W. It can burn and read Blu-ray discs at 6x, DVD blanks at 8x, and CD media at 24x. The other side of the glasses, on the other hand, have a "multi-layered mirror coating" which would make the glasses act as a mirror without any distortion. The question is, are you willing to spend that much for these pair of 3D glasses? Just make sure that you don't leave them at the cinemas.<BR><BR></P>

Microsoft Unveils It's New and Remarkable Hardware Progam Called "Microsoft's Surface"

<br /> <p>Everybody is well aware of the fact that when it comes to real innovation in computer hardware, Microsoft has been behind the curve, to say the least. That is precisely what is so surprising about this new and exciting hardware/software piece of technology called "Microsoft's Surface". This electronic table has a surface that is not only touch-sensitive, it can actually be used at the same time by more than one person for full contact interactivity.</p><p>Objects that are placed upon the table's surface can actually interact with the software hidden inside the table very intuitively. For example, if you place a group of photographs face-side down upon the touch screen, the photo will be instantly digitized to whatever size you want the photograph to be in by sweeping your arms back and forth while holding the photo in your hand. The table's 30-inch screen will allow you to take a picture with a Wi-Fi enabled camera, and then you can easily force the picture into the screen where it will instantly be integrated into the Microsoft Surface program.</p><p>WHEN WILL I BE ABLE TO BUY THIS GREAT NEW PRODUCT?<br /><br>Unfortunately, the new Microsoft technology will not be available for consumer usage for quite some time yet. The wholesale price for the tables will be in the range of $5,000 and a little more for companies that they are partnering with like T-Mobile, Starwood and Harrah's Casino. Harrah's plans for the unit include using the table for a high-tech gambling machine as well as a device where you can locate your hotel room and develop all of your digital photos in their hotels.</p><p>It will be quite a while for this innovative technology to be moved into your workplace, much less your home, so that is a slight disappointment when learning about this great new Microsoft hardware. Bill Gates himself has speculated that one day he sees this new table hardware as supplanting the flat-screen HD computer screens that are all the rage currently. His vision would be for this interactive surface to be embedded into everyone's desk who have to sit for more than eight hours a day in their dull grey cubicles. I hope he is right about that.</p><p>THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT FOR MICROSOFT'S "SURFACE" TABLETOP HARDWARE<br /><br>One of the main attributes of this technology is the fact that you will one day be able to scan any image directly into the screen in a matter of seconds, along with digital music downloads as well. Future versions of Microsoft's "surface" will come with the ability to plug any video camera or digital camera directly into one of the USB ports where you will then see your full screen images in the HD 30-inch screen immediately.</p><p>The surface also contains a virtual keyword which you will be able to see as soon as you turn the table on and will be able to adjust to your personal tastes. All of the usual Microsoft Vista software will be built into the table, so there will never be a need for a software upgrade again, until of course a new and "better" Microsoft program comes along.</p><p>But if Bill Gates' past statements about needing to build an internet infrastructure that will allow any internet user to instantly download future Microsoft programs that replaces the old one is to be believed, this new table hardware sounds like the perfect "set-top" platform that will allow any web surfer to do just that.
